Reporter yeah good evening. Steven deshler is a very wellknown track and field coach here at Novato High School and we are learning his arrest may have come as a surprise. The 64yearold track coach was arrested last night at the Oakland Airport on a return trip from hawaii with his wife. As soon as he stepped off the plane, according to marin county sheriffs office. Investigators say the investigation began last month, when a mother of a 17yearold girl came forward with texts she believed to be evidence of a sexual relationship with her daughter that may have started in april. The teen has since graduated. Deputies say that deshler was known to the teen and her family for a few years and search warrants were served on the school and at his home. One lieutenant explained how the investigation evolved. We have been doing an investigation behind the allegations that we discovered along with what was being offered by the mother. It was determined that there was significant cause to arrest mr. Deshler for the allegations that he has been having a sexual relationship with the 17yearold girl. Reporter now, according to the School District hes been a coach at the school since 1996, adding that since 2010 all coaches are required to be fingerprinted and or complete an activities supervisor clearance certificate. That in the 201415 school year, he coached the girls and in the past the boys. Investigators say they dont have any reason to believe there are any other victims tied to this. But they do say that theyre not ruling it out. He is out on bail. We did try to reach out to him at his home but did not get a response. The East San Jose home didnt have working smoke detectors, but luckily a firefighter saw smoke coming from the attic of the home and helped the family get out. A lifeguard supervisor told me that all Santa Cruz County beaches and the water will be open for swimming and surfing at your own risk. The sightings have mostly been between 30 yards out to 200 yards from shore. Shark warnings will stay posted at sea cliff and new brighton state beaches through the july fourth weekend and perhaps into next week. Though the latest shark sighting was two days ago. It is a little bit scary, especially with all those shark attacks in North Carolina. You kind of think the same thing could happen here. Reporter last week a helicopter pilot saw at least 14 great whites near apptoss. Jeff phillips says they have been seen here before but rarely this many at once. Of. Its nothing new for me. No one is being kept out of the water, but getting to the water this Holiday Weekend may be more difficult than usual. Besides highway 17 traffic, a large number of Parking Spaces wont be available because of fences put up to help Law Enforcement check bags and coolers for alcohol. The fencing is here to try to regulate the Access Points to the beaches so we can kind of advise the public as they come on there is no glass, no alcohol, no fireworks, zero tolerance weekend for that.
