KNTV NBC Bay Area News At 6 July 13, 2024

For covid19. Out of the 35 residents, six have passed away. There is a surge of people who tested positive for the virus at the east bay post acute facility. We believe that is in castro valley. 17 staff there and 9 residents tested positive. No one at that facility has died. But back here in hayward, we spoke with a man outside who is concerned about his grandmother. She has lived at this facility for two years. I was able to go up to the window. She was there. Shes good. Shes good. But just a little upset that no one called us from the family. We have to find out from a news alert. And evidently theyre still not talking to anybody. You know, i just want to know whats going on, who is in charge here. And make sure that my grandmother and the other residents are will be. Reporter well, some people out there may recognize him. He just happens to be a City Council Member in union city. Information is not complete at this time. We dont know when the residents tested positive. We have no timeline on when the six people died. As you know, care home facilities are very vulnerable to this deadly virus. Well have more information on this story coming up at 11 00 tonight. Reporting live from hayward, im cheryl hurd, nbc bay area news. Cheryl, good information and our hearts go out to all the families. We talked about hayward, castro valley, and Nursing Homes have been a hot spot for this disease from the very beginning. The number of cases now in Pleasant Hill at a facility there has gone up. The Carlton Senior Living center now reports 16 people have tested positive. Of those 16 cases, five are patients and 11 are staff members. A third nursing home in the east bay has also been hit hard by the virus, and the state is promising to help staff in a facility in arinda. Nearly 26 people who live there are sick. Candas anderson welcomes the states help running the 47bed facility. Thats our number one concern from a county level. So many of their own care workers have come down with the covid virus, and will be working to fill those needs, back fill those with state workers to come in and provide that level of care. She says the state is planning a joint inspection of the facility with county officials in coming days, which could lead to even more involvement. We are following some breaking news out of alameda county. The Master Tenant of the ghostship warehouse will be released because of coronavirus concerns. Right now 11 inmates have tested positive. Hes awaiting his second trial for the warehouse fire. It was a hung jury for the first trial. The Sheriffs Office says he will have to wear an ankle monitor while out. The new trial is set for july 6 of this year. We hear about new york and louisiana and houston. There are many hot zones across the country, but lets start here at home in terms of the numbers. You can see each county here in the bay area. 4200 reported cases across our region. In Santa Clara County alone down at the bottom, about 1300 cases reported infections here. Now, lets compare this to the epicenter in u. S. New york has nearly 17,000 reported cases. Your see the graph here. New york in the orange and then california in the blue. New york has 149,000 cases, almost nine times as many. The death toll here in california, 442. New york has 14 times higher, with the death toll there in the green, 6,200 right there. So what is happening here in california . What are we doing right . Lets bring in our reporter. Reporter experts and Disease Control say the main difference isnt about density or area. Much of it has to do with two major things. When we started staying home and sheer luck. As covid19 tears across the country, california has managed to slow the virus. We made a big, bold bet on a new strategy, and it is bearing fruit. Reporter while new york had its deadliest day yet, with 779 deaths in 24 hours. The bad news isnt just bad. The bad news is actually terrible. Reporter endepidemiologist George Rutherford says for new york, some of this is just bad luck. In new york, one to have original patients was a socalled super spreader, somebody who trap transmits to people. Reporter then there are social distancing differences. Bay area leaders ordered residents to shelter at home, starting march 17th. Five days before new york, and also before a major social event. One of the things that i think that the Health Officers deserve a lot of credit for, was that we sheltered in place before st. Patricks day. Reporter we probably saved more than 10,000 people in the bay area alone. People in the bay area have done a fabulous job, but we just started the Third Quarter and its not time to let up. Reporter lili tan, nbc bay area news. We are still keeping an eye on the grand princess cruise ship. This is a live look at the port of San Francisco. Port officials tell us this ship will be leaving any time now. In fact, you can see that tug boat there at the stern of the ship. Theres another one on the other side, getting ready to help turn the cruiseship around. Its been anchored in the bay for nearly three weeks after 21 people, tested positive for the virus. It was a days long process to test people and allow them to disembark at the port of oakland. Two passengers and one crew member have died. If you live in the south bay, you probably get that loud text alert at 4 30 this afternoon. A new county directive ordering businesses to take stock of ppes. With the projected covid19 peak expected next week, county leaders want to know who they can lean on locally since state and federal aid is not reliable. We know we need ppe to protect Health Care Workers, first responders, and other medical staff so they can continue to deliver Critical Health Care Services to everyone in our community. This is a lawful order. So Companies Must comply or face citations. Qualifying businesses need to register on line with the Public Health department. Tahoe has seen a lot of snow, but dont check this out. This is live at lake tahoe. A beautiful picture. Some are thinking about a getaway there, but Health Officials say please stay home. Nbc bay areas Christy Smith explains why theyre asking everyone, even people who own cabins there, to stay away. Reporter normally this route to tahoe would be crowded with travelers bound for one last skiing trip. But these days, its a lot quieter, and tahoe locals are hoping it stays that way. Yeah, its Desolation Valley up here now, which i enjoy. Reporter in recent days, the sierra has seen a surge of people crowding into town to beat the shelter at home blues. One Health Officer is begging you to stay away. Multiplying that by so many thousands of people brings a whole bunch of minute risks, multiplied, and it could be many illnesses up there. Reporter its not just tourists, theyre asking parttime tahoe homeowners to shelter here instead of there. The reason . Concern about a surge. The primary reason for that is that we have a small Health Care System in north lake tahoe designed for the permanent population, and not for a lot of tourists and second homeowners. Reporter they say the system would be almost instantly overwhelmed with a crush of Covid Patients needed care right away. So the message is, they cant wait to see you when its all over. But for now, stay home and save lives. In San Francisco, Christy Smith, nbc bay area news. Up next here at 6 00, remember that schoolteacher in Contra Costa County that losed a lizzo song to inspire her students . Now, she has a new way to connect with her class. Im chief meteorologist jeff ranieri. Im tracking the chance of rain tomorrow. Ill show you when it moves in and moves out in about six minutes. Everyone is working a little differently now. So we can still answer your calls. And we are monitoring our system 24 7 to ensure that we have a fast reliable network, keep the customers connected, and making sure people are staying safe. And were still on the road. Solving Critical Issues as they arise. Go to xfinity. Com prepare. Thank you. Well, now to our Coronavirus Crisis center, where we try answering pressing questions you may have. This has been floating out. Is soap and water the best bet here . Lets bring in Jessica Aguirre with some answers. Jessica . Raj, for the last couple of weeks weve been talking about gloves and masks andty bacterial in stopping the spread. But from the beginning, the one thing thats been consfanlt tan fighting it with soap and water and vigorously washing your hands. So how is it an infection that has killed hundreds of that has infected 100,000 people and killed so many, no match for just plain old soap and water . So we spoke to a biophysicist about why coronavirus and soap dont mix. How does that work against the virus, just soap and water . Absolutely, yes. So if you ill go back with this example of me being the virus. When i show up to the door of the cells, and in my pocket will say i have any instruction with my genetic material, the envelope thats carried in is a lipid envelope. Now, lipids are kem ii ii iic chemically similar to soap. So with the addition of soap and scrubbing, it essentially disintegrates that particle, or that envelope rather, and when that envelope is gone, the virus is inactivated. So, again, soap and water and vigorously watching your hands is such a battle front here. And really such a great thing. So he told us that you really think of the virus as like a home invader that comes into your house, rearranges the furniture, gets all the instructions to all the parts of your house and infiltrates it and replicates itself over and over again and creates new instructions for your body. Thats why its so damaging. He also says in terms of antiviral drugs, it takes ten years to develop those. So the only thing we have to fight it besides washing your hands and making sure you dont spread it is the current batch of antiviral drugs that we have right now. We like his analogy. Very easy to follow. Thank you, jessica. Stanford is conducting one of the biggest tests of its kind, trying to determine if someone who contracts the virus and recovers has built up any immunity through antibodies. Stanford has been researching the Antibody Test with thousands of volunteers, including some people at a park last week. You see them there. Now the hospital is testing its own employees to see who might have been infected already, and if that explorer protects them from getting reinfected. Public Health Professor h. Wesley clark says Antibody Research is a new frontier. Then what we can do is identify people who have developed some immunity, which is important here because the new virus, not a whole lot of people have any kind of immunity. At this point, its uncertain when or if that Antibody Test will be available for the general public. Shes at it again. Remember that second grade teacher from pittsburgh . Last year she used a lizzo song to inspire students. That video went viral. Now shes working her magic from home. Heres melissa colorado. I dont know if they told you, but it doesnt look like well be going back to school. Reporter mrs. Dorothy broke the School Online to her second graders that they were not to return to their classroom. The same classroom where they filmed a video seen by millions of the kids singing and dancing to a kid friendly version of lizzos hit song truth hurts. The coronavirus pandemic hasnt taken away that classroom tradition. Here she is trying to lead all 18 of her kids through the same song using zoom. A lot of delays, but we did it. And it was hilarious, because theyre so into it. Reporter even though shes working from home, she says her work is intensified, because now shes fielding calls from her students and parents. I feel like its 24 7. Im constantly replying to parents, helping them out. Reporter she says shes had facetime calls with all of her students to make sure theyre able to logon and learn, not all of her students have access to a laptop, a ltablet or a smartphone. We have an old ipad that im going to lend out to a student. Reporter if you have a student struggling with distance learning, she has the following tips reporter in these uncertain times, one thing is for certain. These kid also never forget mrs. Malari. I love this class. Reporter melissa colorado, nbc bay area news. Great teacher and some great tips. Your moment of zen for today. A rare red fox caught on camera in yosemite. It was captured in october, but it was only recently retrieved from a back county camera. Leaders at the yosemite conse e conservey are using this to help with field surveys. Lets bring in jeff ranieri. An Easter Sunday forecast for the scavenger hurt and weekend gardening forecast. Oh, man. Well have that coming up in that sevenday forecast in 25 minutes. So a real teaser here for you. Right now i want to focus in on that chance of rain that is coming back as we head through tomorrow. So the good news about this, if you have allergies, a little bit of wet weather is going to help, as we bring you into this tonight, a storm system just off to the south. Its going to spiral up some rainfall here into tomorrow. No doubt the heaviest rain chance down towards southern california. So a closer look at the Doppler Radar satellite right now across the bay area. We have these high clouds that have started to stream in from that storm off to the south. So as we move through tomorrow morning, notice the south bay would have the best chance of that rainfall with spotty chances over contra costa and alameda counties. With this setup, everyone should prepare for a hit and miss shower tomorrow. If you have a job planned or youre going to head outside for a little bit in that fresh air. As we move through the afternoon, well see that storm pull away and our chances will start to decrease. Temperatures really dont fluctuate with this storm. It brings in mild air, so low to mid 60s for much of the bay area tomorrow. Coming up in 25 minutes, well get you squared away for the easter forecast and if you have any kind of planting you want to do and talk about that much warmer weather that is on tap. I think youre going to be very pleased with whats coming our way. So see you in 25 minutes. Okay, jeff. Looking forward to it. Up next, a bay area teacher steps up to help more than just the students. The good hes doing during this crisis and the lesson he hopes his kids take away from this time in history. The best way to predict the future is to create it and change the world. Here at abbvie, were inventing medicines of the future to create tomorrows that will be healthier. And happier, while making medicines that help people right now. Because thats the present we wanted to live in. And thats the future we all want to see. Abbvie. Here. Now. Whaso lets do the rightver chanthing, today. Ow. Lets stay at home. Lets wash up. Lets always keep our distance please, six feet apart at least. Lets look after ourselves, as well as others. It will all be worth it. We can all do our part. So those on the front line can do their part. And when this is over, we will all, continue, to thrive. Im Jessica Aguirre coming to you live from my home to you. Teachers across the bay area are busy tending to their students doing distance learning. But one teacher in the east bay at Dublin High School is really taking it up a notch. Michael gambrosio is a teacher and assistant coach and decided he needed to do something else. He got his students involved because he wanted to help the community. He created a Facebook Page and just within days he had hundreds of people saying they wanted to help him and a slew of projects to work on. So tell me about some of the projects you have taken on through this Facebook Page. What have you done . It started off with just helping people who may have been over the age of 65 and couldnt leave their house, and we were getting, you know, picking up their prescriptions, which lets you help families that may have lost jobs with diapers and food. But the biggest project we just completed is we wanted to help the local restaurants while still helping the people that were working at theal. We collected money, which we collected over 5,000 in about four days and contacted all the local restaurants and we purchased these 500 gift cards. And some of the restaurants matched our donation, which then we sent those gift cards to the hospital. What is do you want your students to remember about this moment in time . If anything, its to tell the kid that this to understand what really life is all about, being there for your family and supporting one another, and that in the blink of an eye things can change and everything can be taken away from you. Boy, that is true. Things can change in the blink of an eye. He says one of the things he does with distance learns that is really powerful is after the lesson is over, he leaves the zoom open so the kids can talk to each other. He thinks what they miss the most is that connection they have with each other at school. Good lessons that we are all learning in realtime here. Thank you, jessica. Up next at 6 30, Bernie Sanders is out of the president ial race. What he said today about dropping out and how joe biden can capitalize. We have breaking news. The grand princess cruise ship is on the move, with hundreds of crew members still on board. A live picture of the ship as you can see. Its passing alcatraz on its way out of the bay. Live pictures from sky ranger. An update of where it might be going, when we come back. Everyone is working a little differently now. So we can still answer your
