This is a live view from nbc bay area sky ranger. As you can see, theyre attacking this area of lower lake with water drops and also on the ground. The fire has quickly spread to at least three acres. Its burning in very dry brush, grassy fuels. No word yet if any structures are threatened at this point. Well continue to follow this fire throughout this newscast and this evening. Also at 4 30, helping those that really need it to make it in the bay. The south bay supervisor looking for housing for farm workers. Good afternoon, everyone. Good wednesday. Im janelle wang. Welcome to nbc bay area news at 4 30. Our ian cull is looking into a plan and will join was the details shortly. Were also tracking other stories on this wednesday, including a Major Court Ruling about San Franciscos effort to clear the homeless off city streets. Both sides, though, are declaring victory. So who is right . Were digging into the details. Also, watch out for the fruit fly. The warning going out in the south bay, and what you need to know about your garden. And elon musk is picking a new fight. The reason he says the Antidefamation League is responsible for xs losses. Our scott budman joins us to talk about this squabble. But were going to begin with the army of people who get food on to our tables. Hundreds of millions of dollars in produce is grown every year in Santa Clara County, but the people who work at these farms are struggling to find housing they can afford. Our ian cull spoke with a south bay leader today who believes shes got a solution to help solve this growing crisis. What is she proposing . She says somethings got to change to truly move us all forward. Were not just talking about building more homes, but a change in overall policy. She says its becoming nearly impossible for farm workers who work grueling hours for little pay to find affordable places to live near the farms that rely on them. The Ochoa Migrant Center in gilroy is one of the places currently housing migrant farm workers, but its not nearly enough. She is proposing two measures to help solve the issue. One is to begin building more homes for farm work owners county land. She says only 61 Housing Units are in the works, and notes that a county report calls for at least 700 more yearround units and another 14 Additional Units for seasonal workers. A lawyer of a former farm worker and a brazero, this is absolutely close to my heart. So to have only 60 units in the pipeline is accepting that people should live in unlivable conditions. So ian, how long would it take to accomplish this plan if it does go into effect . And where in the county would this housing be available or built . Those are some of the key questions both arenas and others are hoping to have answered over the next few months. The santa clara board of supervisors has already voted to move the plan forward. Now county staff will talk with workers and farmers to see exactly what can be done, where the homes can be built, and how much it will all cost. But arena thats is also proposing removing some red tape so farm owners could build more units on their own properties, something advocates are looking for as well. So there are several landowners, farmers in Santa Clara County who want to move forward with creating more housing for their employees. On their properties. We need to make sure that the process is clear, its fair, and not as complicated. Coming up tonight at 6 00, hear more about this plan and from farm workers about the problems that they are encountering. Its definitely much needed. Thank you so much, ian. All lanes of westbound 780 at east fifth street in benicia still shut down at this hour. Its all because of a hazardous spill around 9 00 this morning when a semitruck overturned. Thousands of gallons of hot asphalt spilled on to the roadway and into a nearby culvert. Paramedics took one person to the hospital. Solano county Environmental Health and the department of fish and wildlife are also investigating the spill. Chp has not said when westbound 780 will reopen. A new ruling in the longrunning legal battle over homeless encampments in San Francisco. Tonight there is ongoing confusion what it means, with both sides claiming victory. The ruling centers around San Franciscos appeal of a federal injunction. The city says its prevented krewes from clearing homeless encampments from sidewalks, streets and parks. The injunction was put in place after the coalition on homelessness sued, saying the city couldnt clear these camps until it provided adequate housing. A panel of judges from the ninth Circuit Court of appeals has now denied the citys appeal, but offered a clearer definition who can be considered involuntarily homeless. Today both sides say they got what they wanted. Hopefully, this is another reminder to the city, look, you need to follow the law, and we would love to have a more improved street response that leads people off the streets. Of course thats our ultimate goal. What the city has been trying to do is balance the Compassionate Services and shelter were providing to unhoused residents with the need to ensure that we have clean and safe streets. And this injunction impacted that balance. We asked the city if the ruling means we will see anything different on the streets in the shortterm, and whether they will begin clearing camps. The City Attorney says they are having conversations about that, and will have more to say on the impact of this ruling in the near future. Weve got an update this afternoon. A missing teenager in san jose has been found. You might have received a text or a robocall warning about this morning. Police were looking for 16yearold brian ramirez. He went missing last night. San jose police say he was found safe just before noon today. And another big story we are watching at this hour, california has declared a quarantine in much of the south bay to protect our fruits and vegetables from this invasive fruit fly. This is what it looks like. Its an oriental fruit fly. The Invasive Species can lay eggs and infest more than 230 types of fruits and vegetables including avocados, citrus and tomatoes. The quarantine is expected to run until next ly. It coffers a 112 square mile area of the south bay. This is the map here. It includes the city of santa clara, parts of cupertino, milpitas, san jose, and sunnyvale. So far, the state has detected eight oriental fruit flies in santa clara and sunnyvale. To catch eight is a lot. So thats whats triggered this quarantine. And were hopeful to lock down the area so nothing leaves, which would potentially spread the fruit fly. Officials began treating agriculture in the south bay last month, and they plan to do so through next march. Authorities believe someone either carried infested fruit into the state and county from another location, or the infested fruit was mailed to the south bay. Elon musk has a new enemy, the Antidefamation League. The head of x, formerly known as twitter, is calling the adl antisemitic. And as we all know, adls mission is to fight antisemitism. Lets bring in our business and tech recorder scott budman. What is going on here . Break it down for us. Yeah, this is a strange one, even given the strangeness of musk and twitter, or x, whatever you call it. Elon musk put out notice that hey, twitter advertisers are back. Were very near breaking even. Now even just a few months later, apparently admitting no, the advertisers are still gone. Were losing a lot of money, and i figured out who to blame, and its not new. He is blaming the jews. He is blaming the Antidefamation League for literal ily doing its job, pointing out racism, antisemitism, sexism on the site. He says by doing that, theyre scaring away many advertiser, including local Tech Companies who have put out notice saying the reason were leaving the platform is because we dont want our tweets showing up next to nazis or racists, or anything like that. It has been documented. And musk instead of saying hey, we need to police ourselves a little better, is saying its the adls fault for somehow scaring the advertisers away, and even threatening a lawsuit, which although entertaining is very unlikely to happen. Remember, this is just about a month after the last threat, which is im training to be in a cage match against mark zuckerberg. This is sort of the latest im blaming somebody for my problems. Is adl responding . Yeah. The adl is not a shy organization. So it is firing back saying this is a crazy idea for a lawsuit. Theyre not comment ogg about the lawsuit itself, but they have commented on musks claims saying this is what we do for a living. We point out antisemitism. We point out racism. We point out sexism onsites like twitter. Were not going away despite musk wanting us to go away because it would be convenient for no one to point this out on a site that has become more toxic since musk took it over. We he has been very vocal especially since he took over twitter, now x. Could any other big tech ceo make this kind of accusation . Its a great question. No, not without getting immense blowback. But no other tech ceo could call someone rescuing children a pedophile either. Musk gets away with things partially because i think he is the richest man, but also, he now owns a megaphone. And when you own the megaphone, you can put out a lot of things over that megaphone and patiently get away with it. But he is getting away with it, but he is losing money because of all of this. And so ultimately, there is blowback. And its not because the adl is scaring people away. Its because people dont want to be associated with some of the things that are on twitter. He could be hurting himself with these accusations. Daily, yes. Okay. Sot scott budman, thank you so much. You bet. We are learning that raging waters in san jose will not be reopening next season. And its likely closed forever. A message posted on the parks website says raging waters will not open until 2024, and thanks the community for, quote, all the wonderful memories. The park opened in 1985, and its the largest water park in northern california. The closure comes nearly a year after raging waters in sacramento shut down. That leaves the raging waters in los angeles, the last location thats still open. And i actually emailed the Public Relations lady at raging waters san jose, and she confirms it is closing for good. We were pretty fortunate in the bay area this summer, but i know the rest of the world not so much. Tell whats they experienced and much of the world experienced the last three months. I know. Weve really been counting our blessings here in the bay area. When it comes to wildfire, we got new information today janelle from the World Meteorological organization. They say it was the hottest august on record, but its the second hottest month of the year right after july. So august was close to 3 degrees fahrenheit warmer than before the industrial revolution. So as we get ready for a new season, lets look back at some of those summer records over the last three months around the northern half of the planet. Weve seen heatwaves triggering wildfires in the pacific northwest, excessive and deadly heat in the south. Also a weather station in england. Listen to this, recorded a temperature of 104 degrees fahrenheit for the first time ever. And to add to the list, the worlds oceans also running very warm this summer, leading to rapid intensifications of tropical storms and hurricanes. And with new extreme after new extreme, janelle, its really having an impact on Peoples Health and the planet overall. Yeah, we experienced that at the beginning of the year, december 31st into january, february. We had extreme weather, extreme rain, a deluge of like record rainfall. Some hot days here and there this summer. There any data here locally that caught your eye, caught your attention . In fact, climate central, a nonprofit Climate Group sent this over a couple of days ago about san jose. This august was much hotter and dryer than normal. The group says san jose stood out as one of the driest locations compared to normal out of the 192 places that they monitor. Black americans are twice as likely to be hospitalized. And sadly, as many as 58,000 people died from the flu last year. Many doctors encourage getting all Vaccines Available from flu to covid and rsv. The public has this thought that vaccinations protect you from infections. They dont protect you from infection. Vaccinations protect you from severe disease. What people need to understand is that what causes severe disease, those symptoms, right, stuffy nose, achiness, cough, shortness of breath, its actually the immune systems response to the environment. The immune systems response to the presence of a virus. Now with regard to covid, fortunately, most people will not die from that virus anymore, but there is a high risk of getting long covid. This can be something that leads to months of not feeling well, brain fog, shortness of breath. Additionally, you could miss work or even a big event such as a wedding as a result.
