weather for us. one year later, how did elon musk make out on twitter? scott budman has numbers on his big tech gamble and how the social media landscape has changed since then. our ian cull is talking to people prioritizing their health. let's begin with the grim discovery in oakland. a body was found in a suitcase floating in lake merritt. a volunteer cleanup crew found the body around 11:00 this morning near lake shore and hanover avenues. police are looking over the entire lake to see where the suitcase came from. homicide detectives are investigating how the person died. the suitcase was spotted about five feet from the shoreline. >> normally we see luggage in the lake and sometimes it's full of clothes or whatever, it gets heavy in the water. we pulled it towards us closer using the net poles, and we grabbed one end and realized it was too heavy. we pulled it close enough to us and said, wow, this thing is heavy. we unzipped it and that's what we found. >> they believe it is an adult man wrapped in what appears to be a sheet. police are not discussing the death or identity of the victim. today a push to clean up a south bay airport and create a greener plan for small planes could become a model for other communities talking about a program that started in san jose. ian cull has been working on the story for us. ian, what exactly is happening over there? >> today local leaders and the epa announced a grand to help small airports transition into using cleaner fuel and help communities they operate in. pilots can only find unleaded in east san jose. studies found the leaded gas older planes was using was polluting the ire. the surrounding community was paying the price for it. >> the level of lead in children around the area was elevated and, in some cases, rivaled the trauma of flint, michigan. >> and that's such a shocking find for sure especially for the people who live in the community. i know you spoke with a member of the community today about pushing for change. >> she is not only pushing for airports to use the cleaner fuel but would like to see the airport closed down. many people who live around there say that. one woman grew up in the area along with dozens of her cousins and has been fighting for the airport to switch for years. she says the new push to help other airports do the same is great, but says the damage is done. people she knows believe people with health problems believe are tied to the airport. >> for a lot of people, it's too little too late. i encourage communities to ban together and to fight nationwide against lead-based fuel. >> they are leading the way on the issue and the grant will push other airports to follow the lead. >> thanks for that preview, ian. we'll stay in the south bay. san jose police discovered a number of unlicensed guns after they arrested this man. investigators say steven florentino is suspected of breaking no a home while armed with a gun. a neighbor confronted florentino. he took off and has been on the run since until last week. police say they arrested him at his home and found all of this, unregistered firearms along with 1,000 rounds of ammunition. florentino faces multiple charges. it is confirmed chinese president xi jinping will meet with president biden at next month's apec summit in san francisco, the first in-person meeting with biden in a year. beijing held off because they were concerned he would be embarrassed by new sanctions or controls on exports. 30,000 people are expected included the president and prime ministers from 21 countries. apec will be held november 11-17th at the moscone center. security will be extremely high. it has been a year since elon musk bought twitter and renamed it x. a lot has happened in the past 365 days including the value of the social media company. our business and tech reporter scott budman. musk paid $44 billion for twitter. what's it worth now? >> about $19 billion. so that's down around 60% in one year. >> that's a big change. i know you spoke with a social media professor about all of this. what exactly has changed with x in the past year? >> some of it has been real on the ground things, audrey. we've seen a lot of the staff let go. jobs that were lost at a company that was thriving before. there was a giant x on top of the building flashing like a disco ball but some intangibles things like can the site be trusted as a source of news anymore? musk has opened things up in what he says is the name of free speech but is opening it up to a lot of abusive accounts, things that get a lot of attention but do they do the site well? some countries and press organizations backed off saying this is not what we want to be a part of. and talk about the difference between $44 billion and $19 billion, a lot of advertisers pulling back saying this is not what we want to be a part of. it's still known as the best place to reach young people for news but is going through so much chaos. young people sense that chaos when they're on the site. they say this is still where i get my news but both sides are fraught with chaos, and they're just not sure if they're getting correct information anymore. >> i remember over the past year we have been talking about all the changes, every time there's a change, there's so much chaos and chen the other social media companies, china gets in to try to take advantage of the opportunity possibly, talking about threads and other small companies, are they gaining any traction? >> threads, an offshoot of instagram and then i think a lot of people noticed the similarities and said, well, we've built a strong thing with our profile and friends, let's stay there. i've tried and i still try to give up at the same time and your mind boggles. so you do try to find what's comfortable to you. if it's social, it's likely to be instagram. if it's news, either twitter or tiktok. as someone who tries to blend them, it's difficult. i can see why people might try to jump into several. they find where they're comfortable and stick with that. >> i'm glad i'm not the only one having a hard time juggling with all of this. >> i do this so you don't have to. it is tough. it makes sense. this is how we're built, to find somewhere where we are comfortable, and stick with it. and x is trying to do that but with an owner who really likes chaos and it's costing a lot of money. >> we know it is hard for home buyers to make it in the bay, right? >> reporter: one thing is it generates huge crowds. take a look at this. this line goes all the way down the block. people arrived here and started lining up an hour before the haunted house even opened, and this is why. take a look at this. this is a two-story ghoulish goods factory. this is just in the front yard of a residential home here in san jose. and look at the detail. look at the smokestack up there. we went inside, and it is incredible. all factory theme, spiders, a break room, someone eating brains for lunch. it was crazy inside. and they're expecting, like i mentioned, 3,000 today and also 3,000 tomorrow. the other thing that's unique is that later tonight about 50 scare actors will be in there making it even more frightening for people that walk through. this is for the younger set so there are no scare actors, which is a thoughtful thing to do. >> that is thoughtful for sure, marianne. that looks incredible. i know you got to speak with the lead creator. i would imagine this took a while to create, yeah? >> reporter: they start designing it the day after halloween. they started constructing this with the boo crew. 20 friends and maybes. >> you mentioned they have different versions of this haunted house. so what are the trick-or-treaters telling you?
