Earthquake rocked taiwan. Thousands of buildings collapsed trapping people inside. You are looking at new video of the destruction and hearing firsthand accounts of the people who survivorred that shaking. For me, it is a long time. And, it is long. It is the islands most powerful tremor in at least 25 years. Four people are dead so far, more than 50 people injured. But those numbers are expected to rise. The worst of the damage in the Eastern County of hualien hit around 8 00 a. M. Local time. We have a lot to get to, tonight. A flight from taipei landed late this evening and a lot of people on the flight immediately picked up their phones, tried to reach loved ones back home. Reporter yeah, of course, they were in the air when the earthquake happened. But they landed, they saw the news and immediately were worried so of course, they checked in with their friends and family. A powerful 7. 4 magnitude earthquake struck on the east coast of taiwan early wednesday morning. It was felt across the entire aland. Builds have collapsed and it readed a tsunami that washed across the Southern Islands of japan. Staid media says its the strongest quake to hit the island in 25 years. Its bad. And im praying for the people. Reporter janelle wang spoke with her uncle tonight. He says he got an alert on his phone about ten seconds before he started to feel the ground shaking. And i felt really big shake. First, up and down. Then starting right to right. For maybe a minute. Pretty big. Reporter he has a friend who lives in hualien. He described to me, everywhere on the street, this is a debris. And the building was collapsed. And the hospital emergency room filled with people. It looks like people are right on top of the earthquake. Reporter seismologist dr. Lucy jones ebbing plains why the city of taipei six hours away felt the shaking. It is siting in a basin. A big bowl of sediment. Similar to what happened in the marina district. Amplified shaking in the distance. Reporter a flight from taipei arrived at sfo. They found out about it when they landed. Oh my god, i hope everyone is okay. Reporter they immediately checked on their family and friends in taipei. What is your family telling you . They are okay. They are okay. They are scared, terrified. Reporter when powerful earthquakes like this happen, many of us wonder what this would do in california. Lomi prita was a 7. This is to the south, hualien. 22 aftershocks. 4. 7 or higher. The largest coming in at 6. 4. A lot of these coastal cities here with the violent shaking in 27. 4 in the strong aftershocks. The ground is just moving and jarring so much. It is turning some of the ground into liquid. That is why we are seeing some of these buildings crumble and pancaking down there. So lets put this on a scale. 7. 0 magnitude and higher. Seven range. There is only 18 of those per year. So extremely rare to get that. The Energy Equivalent is equivalent to one billion pounds of explosive. That is how strong and forceful that initial earthquake was. They could have maybe been up to nine feet in china. Also around nine feet in taiwan. No tsunami threat for us. Only earthquake we have seen was a 3. 0 near santa rosa. 8 25 tonight. We will monitor any more of these aftershocks. I have more update ins the show. The next few days are critical for recovery efforts. We are getting images of the destruction. Building collapsed. Landslides as well. A local man who headed up the menlo park urban search and rescue for years harold. He worked a gruesome aftermath of 9 11 and hurricane katrina. He spent time with his crews in taiwan following a massive earthquake there. He also trained some of taiwans search teams here in the bay area. Some of those teams working right now in the aftermath of this quake. He gave us this insight into the minds of the search and rescue teams tonight. This will prioritize where the most people will be trapped. Or potentially injured and the teams will go in there. One of the things they did early on which i thought was really amazing, given the fact that they were, you know, their system was very archaic when we were there. It is that they coupled their teams with helicopters. So they gave them really good mobility quickly so they could helicopter into different parts of the country. You know. As small groups of fire personnel with equipment. So they could affect rescue. They expect to be in rescue mode ten days before shifting to recovery. He describes the taiwan rescue capability as robust. All right, here at home, we had a much smaller earthquake tonight as jeff mentioned. But a lot of people really felt it. The quake hit northeast of santa rosa. It was originally reported as a 3. 2. But it has been downgraded to a 3. 0. The seismograph did pick up that shaking in the news room. There were people as far south as San Francisco and berkeley that reported they felt that quake though they say it was weak. This in todays event in taiwan are a good reminder that we really do need to be prepared for earthquakes. New at 11 00, stopping side shows with a deterrent. Multiple east bay cities seeing side show activity over the weekend including the city of antioch, but measures are being taken to prevent side shows at hot spots around the city. Reporter the antioch boat lodge has been a popular destination for side shows in the city. But a new deterrent is being added to this parking lot entrance to make sure that isnt the case. The tire streaks left behind from previous side shows can still be seen in the parking lot of the antioch boat launch. A side show incident prompting the city to add concrete barriers. It is dangerous the way they move. Reporter and now another safety measure is being taken by the city. Replacing the current boat ramp gate with an electric gate that will close the lock completely at 9 00 p. M. They will be on timers. And much more firm than what we currently have. The mayor says the team of investigators are in place to find out when the side shows are set to take place.
