KNTV Today July 2, 2024

news. it is already shaping up to be a hectic morning for the commute in the south bay, a big rollover. this is on the critical connector ramp and the cleanup may take some time. today in the bay bob redell is live at the scene. bob. this is where 101 meets 880 heading north in san jose. you can see all the lights behind you. correct. out. so we are on the connector ramp from northbound 101 to southbound 880, which is shut down. and also right next to it is the connector ramp from northbound 880 to northbound 101 shut down because of this right here. this is a big rig that overturned a couple of hours ago. it is loaded with about 40 to 50,000 pounds of strawberries . i did speak with chp and the person who's running the operation over turnus with the wrecking crew. they are hoping, depending on how this overturn goes right now, where they try to write it up, they are hoping to maybe have this reopen within the next 30 to 60 minutes. but again, it's going to depend on what happens when this wrecking crew overturns this big rig, this was a solo vehicle accident. i spoke briefly with the driver. he didn't speak english, but he was fine. he chp believes he's probably going too fast when he overturned here on the connector ramp. so again, the issue is trying to get the truck upright without it breaking. there was some minor fuel spillage, but i don't think that's something that would be extending the shutdown any more than, you know, a few minutes or so. so again, we are talking about the northbound 101 connector ramp to southbound 880. i think it said northbound 80 before. so this is the northbound 101 connector ramp to southbound 880 is shut down, as is the northbound 880 connector ramp to northbound 101. the estimated time of reopening. if everything goes okay, right here behind me, another 30 to 60 minutes. and what you can't see behind you is northbound 101. the morning commute is starting. it is at the limit, and this so far does not seem to be having any impact in terms of people slowing down because of looky loos and that sort of thing. reporting live here in san jose, bob redell today in the bay. well, that's good. and thankfully the driver was okay too. thanks, bob. all right, let's head over to mike inouye. of course, he's tracking that backup. surely going to cause a little pause there for some drivers out there. mike. that will be an issue right now. the spectacle is. all the lights you see here is northbound 101. that's what bob was talking about. this shot, as folks know, is critical to showing where the commute is building and when it's building in san jose. easy drive at the limit just north of two the 8680 interchange. bob talked about a little bit different. the setup here, north 101 getting on to 880. he said to 880 south. i do know that the connector to that area is closed. folks will get off to the area and usually take oakland road or 10th. that can get you around that, but you'll have to get on from the southbound side of 101. so there's a little surface street traffic wiggling. you'll have to do again that connector, though, from north 101 to 880. watch both directions. they may have to shut them down at times because of that rig that has to be lifted up. we're hoping they can pick that rig up without tearing, without the payload tearing through the sides of the rig, which are pretty thin. so we'll watch for progress there. your alternates, if you're looking forward in a few minutes, we're looking at 680. we'll see more traffic. and 280 to 87 will see more traffic that will continue with the bigger build. so we'll watch that. we'll see. so far things are pretty calm there as well as the rest of the bay. but carry that's going to be an issue for the south bay. how's that weather looking? it looks great starting out this morning. temperatures in the mid 50s. so across the bay area we're at 56 in san jose, 55 in palo alto, and we're down to about 50 in oakland. as you're heading out the door, we're going to see temperatures today just slightly warmer compared to yesterday and not as much wind, but it will still be breezy at times as martinez will see a high of 82 degrees. it will be nice and sunny, 77 in oakland, and we'll be in the upper 70s and low 80s for much of the south bay. we'll take a look ahead to a significant warm up coming our way for tomorrow and thursday or friday. that's coming up in just a few minutes. back to you. thanks, carrie. well, new developments this morning out of the middle east. this is where israeli leaders now saying that there is a new cease fire proposal on the table. a government insider telling nbc israel submitted the new proposal to mediators monday. it offers what describes as a, quote, sustainable, calm but not a complete end to the war as demanded by hamas. now, hamas leaders tell nbc there's no new proposal. meanwhile, israeli forces are moving for the first time into rafah city center. it comes after the weekend airstrike that killed dozens of palestinians in the refugee camp, developing right now just south of the bay area, there is a manhunt underway for an escaped inmate. deputies say danielle lopez zavala escaped a little more than 24 hours ago from san benito county jail in hollister. jail staff saw him jumping a barbed wire fence. some of his jail garb was later discovered in an open field. it's believed he may have left the area by car. the sheriff calls him a known gang member with an extensive criminal history, who had not yet been sentenced for his latest crime. we don't have any reason to believe that he's going to go do anything specific in this community other than try to get away from it. the sheriff also blames the escape on a lack of staffing. he says he lacks the manpower to properly oversee video surveillance, and his team could not set up a perimeter after the escape happening today, convicted murderer scott peterson will appear virtually in a hearing on his legal team's attempt to win a new criminal trial. peterson, now confined to mule creek state prison near sacramento. he's serving life in prison for the murder of his wife, laci, and their unborn son , connor. 20 years ago, attorneys for la's innocence project filed motions requesting new dna testing on evidence gathered during the murder investigation. that includes a mattress found inside a burned out van found near peterson's modesto home. our ginger conejero saab is following those developments. she'll have a live report in our next half hour. well, after weeks of squaring off inside the courtroom, the prosecution and defense presented their closing arguments in the historic hush money trial of former president donald trump. now a jury must decide whether he orchestrated a criminal conspiracy designed to influence the 2016 presidential election. today, in the bay's brie jackson joins us live from washington this morning. so what can we expect in court today? it's going to go to the jury. yeah that's right. good morning laura. so first, this morning, judge juan merchan plans to spend about an hour or so giving instructions to the jury. after much deliberation, asians can begin. did former president trump falsify business records in alleged hush money payments to adult film actress stormy daniels? is the question jurors will consider during closing arguments. the defense placed the blame on former trump attorney michael cohen, calling him the gloat. the greatest liar of all time. if michael cohen is the mvp of liars, then donald trump was coach of the year, prosecutor argue former president trump orchestrated a criminal conspiracy to influence the 2016 election. he denies any wrongdoing. a lot of people are going to be very upset, but this is all election hunting, election interfering for the first time, the biden campaign spoke outside the courthouse, sending a dire warning to voters of the unique, persistent and growing threat that donald trump poses to the american people and to our democracy, a concern echoed by actor robert de niro. he appeared in an ad for president biden and was joined by officers who helped protect the u.s. capitol on january 6th. i love this city. i don't want to destroy it. donald trump wants to destroy not only the city, but the country. and eventually he could destroy the world. trump's supporters blasted his political opponents and the cases against him. they're making a political mockery of this entire thing. there are real problems in america, and you are all out here covering this because joe biden is weak. he's pathetic. it will be up to a jury to decide trump's fate. enduring jury deliberations. jurors will discuss the 34 counts of falsifying business records facing former president trump. laura. all right. so much to follow. we'll see how it goes. thank you very much. brie well, former president trump is coming to the bay area in search of big money. trump is scheduled to be in san francisco thursday, june sixth. he is set to attend a fundraiser held by two coho hosts of the all in podcast. now, tickets start at $50,000, and vice president kamala harris also has fundraising stops in the bay area. two are scheduled for a week from today. one is at a large venue near manny's in san francisco's mission district. tickets range from 500 to $25,000, and vice president will also attend a second event in oakland. it's sponsored by a prominent indian american lawyer. let's take a live look outside overlooking san jose. carrie, you mentioned it. sun's going to start greeting us a little earlier every morning. yes and it's a nice start. all clear there. we can see the sunrise. and we're going to also continue with a mostly sunny sky going throughout today. our temperatures are in the low 50s in fremont. it is 50 in oakland, and we're at 57 in santa rosa. so also slightly warmer. there and dublin all clear. and temperatures in the upper 50s at 8:00 at noon. we're in the mid 70s and you can see the warming trend here. it's going to be a little warmer than it was yesterday as we're headed for the upper 70s as opposed to the low 70s we had yesterday afternoon, an 85 degrees in concord, and we're up to 88 in fairfield. in novato today, 80 degrees with upper 60s in san francisco. mike, you're still tracking that sig alert? yeah, we have this issue going on in san jose. this overturned rig in the center of the screen. and then you see the crane over on the right or the i guess, heavy duty tow truck. what they're trying to do is they hope they can right this rig. they hope they can basically lift it up 90 degrees up the red side over there. that's the bottom of the truck. and the right side will be lifted. the left side will be lifted up. and if they can do so without the sides of the rig falling apart with the payload falling out, that's good news. we're going to watch and continue this bob redell is on the scene and this could be critical. this is critical in the timing of when they can reopen the connector. let me talk about what connector we are in san jose. we zoom into northbound 101 as we're looking at this connector right here, north 101, the commute direction. a little later on, we'll see more traffic flowing right here past oakland road where things typically slow down the first at about 540, we see a lot more volume and a lot more slowing. the connector from north 101 to north 880 is the one. that is where we're looking with that overturned rig. that is the problem right now. if they can clear that rig up in the next, say, half an hour, that would be great news, because then they just have to sweep up all the sand barrels, the 40, potentially 40,000 pounds of strawberries in the area as well. no major injuries. this is just a major traffic headache. 680 and 280 would be your alternate to get around that scene, but that could cause a lot more slowing through the area. so we're looking at that for the south bay, but everything else is looking calm. back to you. wow. they just have to sweep. that's all. that's all. thanks, mike. before you know it, outside lands will be here. coming up next on today in bay when single ticket sales start and the announcement that's expected later today. yeah. plus three local students are in the national spotlight. their quest to win the national spelling bee and boeing has a leak in the rocket. it wants to send astronauts to space in. and they said, you know what? let's an. it is all clear this morning. no issues with any fog. and after a clear start we have a lot of sunshine and quickly warming temperatures. today we're going from low 50s to mid 70s. at noon we'll talk about a big warm up in our microclimate forecast in a few minutes. and we may see a bigger slowdown than you expect right here. north 101. you see the volume starting to kick in right on schedule another 15 minutes and we expect to see slowing as you approach oakland road and 880. but the transition onto north 880 right now is blocked by the overturned big rig. we'll continue to follow that and we'll see how long this top number continues to build. that could cause a slowdown unexpectedly slow from a downtown. there may be an 87 reroute as well. we'll show you coming up. well good morning. very happy wednesday. the nasdaq will open at another new record on the strength of nvidia, which is up 20% in just the last week. that company just keeps going and going. shareholders at hess oil voted to approve a purchase by chevron in san ramon. this is dine brands, which owns ihop and applebee's. they say a full quarter of the people who go into those restaurants are now using some sort of coupon or deal. that's a record high for them. people obviously looking for a deal in inflationary times, though, encouraging news out of the conference board, which says consumer confidence rose for the first time in three months, the numbers show consumers, though, still expect a recession and polling earlier this week by harris shows nearly 3 in 5 americans think we're in a recession, which we are absolutely not. half the people polled believe the stock market is down for the year. the dow, the nasdaq, the s&p 500 have all hit new records recently. mullin gates says she'll contribute $1 billion to protect women's rights. her announcement comes about two weeks after she said she was stepping down from the bill and melinda gates foundation. she's going to give money to help protect women's economic security, voting rights and abortion rights. in a new york times op ed, gates said, quote, as shocking as it is to contemplate, my one year old granddaughter may grow up with fewer rights than i had space launched a rocket out of southern california that will put a new satellite in orbit to monitor the environment. this is the seventh time spacex has used this very rocket booster. remember they're reusable. meantime its competitor boeing continues to have all kinds of problems with its starliner rocket that will carry astronauts into space. remember, spacex carries astronauts into space all the time. boeing is having a devil of a time getting its rocket right. they've had delays or delay trying to hunt down a helium leak and then this week, boeing said, you know, let's just go. anyway, they didn't find the cause of the leak, but its first manned mission is scheduled for saturday. they're going up to the international space station. the nickname for it is the calamity capsule. oh, yeah. that's not good. so, you know, godspeed on saturday to the two astronauts, but, yeah, they're just going to go anyway. okay. all right. good luck. good luck. all right. we'll stay here on the ground and hopefully we can go to this outside lands fans, get ready. the entire three day lineup is expected to be announced in just a matter of hours. it all comes ahead of single day tickets going on sale tomorrow. so we already know who's playing, just not when. the headliners include tyler, the creator, the killers, sturgill simpson and post malone. doing a country performance today. the exact performance days and stages will be revealed. the festival, of course, takes place august 9th through the 11th in golden gate park. and don't forget to join us for today in the bay streaming tomorrow morning at 8 a.m. will be joined live by one of the festival organizers, who will have everything you need to know ahead of outside lands 2024. you can watch it daily on roku, amazon fire tv, xumo and nbcbayarea.com streaming platforms, including our app. well, trending this morning, the bees are buzzing and we're not just talking about insects, we're talking about the contestants at the scripps national spelling bee. yeah, today is the quarter finals and bay area has three local spellers in the competition. we have seventh grader aaron lee of belmont, san jose, eighth grader sharada raj, who placed third last year, and first timer amani sharon from cabo middle school in san jose. now, winners bring home a $50,000 cash prize and the official scripps cup trophy. you can watch the 2024 scripps national spelling bee live today and tomorrow on ion tv. that's funny because when you read the names, i thought i recognize some of them from last year. last year. yeah. wow. very impressive. good luck. good luck . good. represent the bay area for now. have a hard time remembering a couple of days ago . i remember the forecast has been good. yeah it hasn't been great. and it will get a little bit warmer over the next couple of days. we're trying to make everyone happy here. if you like the warmer weather, you're going to see that heading into the next couple of days. here is a clear look at walnut creek as you're heading out. we're going to have a really nice sunrise and we can see that as well over the golden gate bridge as we take a live look at san francisco this morning on your commute and your drive. don't forget those sunglasses. you'll definitely need them for the morning and also the afternoon drive in martinez. we're going to see temperatures going from mid 50s to low 60s. at 9:00. we're at 71 at 11:00. and in the mid 70s already by noon, our south bay high temperatures in the upper 70s and low 80s. so we're coming up a few degrees compared to yesterday, and it won't be as windy in morgan hill. expect a high of about 83 degrees and we'll see some mid 80s for concord oakland, hayward, fremont 77. also 77 for redwood city in san francisco. so low 70s today that's going to be really nice. and we'll see a couple of more days of 70s in the forecast. while the north bay will be in the mid to upper 80s in some spots. and we do expect a big warming to happen over the next few days. but then look at all of the storms that have been moving into the pacific northwest. all of that rain up there that gets very close to the north bay, heading into early june. we don't always see that well, there could be some scattered showers on monday, but then a big ramp up in temperatures as high pressure quickly builds after that cold front moves through. so we're going to see our temperatures ramping up up to 94 tomorrow and then gradually coming back down for the weekend and then heating up again for the middle of next week. we start these waves in the spring, where we do have some, at times really warm weather, but then we get breaks in between with a nice cool down for a few days. and mike, you were saying that big rig still overturned in san jose? yeah. oh this one. yeah, exactly. that's why the connectors closed. you see it on the ramp. and folks familiar with this tight cloverleaf know that this can be an issue for larger vehicles right now. just this rig overturned. no injuries, but they've got to clear this up. i don't know if they gave up or if they're resetting. they had the rigging connected to the rig already. and they were going to try and stand it up. so bob redell is on scene and he'll continue to follow this. but right now what it means is on the map, we're looking at this closure north 101 to north 880. that connector is
