with juliette goodrich. >> good evening. the war in gaza is sparking tensions right here in the bay area. we start in san francisco, where more than 100 student protesters blocked streets around the school district offices. they are demanding more support for palestinian, arab, and muslim students. they were supported by the arab resource and organizing center, a pro-palestinian organization that has come under some recent criticism. it has a contract with the district to provide services to students. the district is now investigating complaints by parents that the group violated district policy by helping organize a high school walked out back in october. so, it is another example of the debate over political issues spilling into our classrooms. katie nelson spoke to students who want to be clear that they organized this protest themselves. >> zana alcara organized this rally. >> as things collectively, we stand with palestine . we kind of wanted to show that and show that there is no organization forcing us or anything, this is all us and we are doing it on our own as our own people. >> reporter: she also participated in the october 18th walkout in support of a free palestine. after that rally, a parent watchdog group called the sf guardians, wrote a letter to the district asking to enter the district relationship with the arab resource center, saying they violated district rules by creating an environment of discoloration through interest medics look at. >> we don't think school contractors should be using access to students to organize students within the school grounds. >> reporter: the district responded on friday, saying they have opened an investigation into the sections. >> this is a racist investigation. we uphold district policy at all levels. this was a youth organized protest and we are going to support our youth because somebody needs to be there to support the youth. >> aroc is the only organization in the city. if it was happening to another group of people or if the story was different, they would have reacted in a different way. for the parent group says this isn't about aroc's geopolitical leanings, it is about making sure contractors follow district rules. >> there are students who love having that group there and are finding a lot of emotional support from them. i just find it sad that they have done things to put that at risk. >> reporter: the district is conducting an investigation into allegations against aroc and should have more information available within the next 30 days. >> katie, thank you. the role of schools in politics also sparked debate in oakland last week when some teachers organized a pro-palestinian teach in. the teachers say their goal was to give a more balanced lesson plan on the conflict in gaza from a palestinian perspective. but, the district called the material "harmful and divisive." people on both sides of the conflict are condemning a disturbing display of heat in oakland. a large menorah put out for the public at lake merritt was destroyed by vandals. rabbi david lekowski got a text that the nine foot tall menorah was ruined. the larger pieces of debris were tossed in the and paint should be destroyed by hate. >> oakland police are investigating the vandalism as a possible hate crime. this is a look at the menorah that was put up on friday. it comes at a time when concern about anti-semitism is on the rise nationwide. state senator nancy skinner called the act, "an act of cowardice." mayor sheng thao wrote , "what happened is not just an attack on oakland's jewish community but our entire city and shared values." the san francisco bay area office on the council of american islamic relations wrote, "we are profoundly saddened and outraged by the vandalism of the lake merritt menorah. people are gathering in a show of support. lesla. >> reporter: we have been out here all afternoon, where we see so many people come out to celebrate the seventh night of hanukkah. this is happening in the midst of the midst of the destruction of the large menorah. you can see over 200 people have gathered here and just before we came on here, they relating the menorah together, chanting and singing. i want to share that there are two different groups here and they are all in preparation of letting not one but two menorahs together. one group is going to replace the menorah that was destroyed and a smaller one, as well. we spoke to an oakland resident and the organizer of tonight's event on how the war in gaza is affecting this year's jewish holiday. >> this specific hanukkah means a little bit more. i was trying to do every night like light the candles, it is a little bit more emotional and makes me feel more jewish and part of the community. >> there are people who love to hate on oakland. no, not saying that. let's get together and show folks what oakland is. oakland is a city of love. oakland is a city of so many people getting together and celebrating liberation, which is what hanukkah is about. >> we told you at 5:00 there is supposed to be this large menorah parade going around as well. we haven't seen them yet but they are supposed
