One east bay city frustrated over dozens of Power Outages already this summer. How pge is responding to the complaints and what it says is the reason behind them. Plus, crime and politics in San Francisco. The mayor is being called out on the issue of retail theft by the supervisor, who is challenging her for the citys top job. Live from Jack London Square this is mornington to the nine. Today is tuesday, september six. Were looking live at San Franciscos richmond district. The Golden Gate Bridge in the background, a little hazy there. The weather is going to do a slight warm up over the next few days. Should be warmer by the weekend. Coming up. Yes, its already wednesday. Hey, this seems like the middle of the week, but some people have had monday off, so kind of off anyway. The six degrees of separation phenomena has been proven true by mathematicians. A group of researchers has looked into the 1960s study from harvard, which sent around 300 identical packages across the us with instructions to pass the letter with social circles to eventually reach the intended recipient through this experiment, researchers discovered that connections are just six handshakes away. For example, if youre friends with both a filmmaker and a film critic, youre in the central connection between you are the central connection between these two people. So it is a small world. Definitely have had that kind of thing happen. Im sure we all have. Its like, no way, you know that person and that person. I think what the crux of the story is, we all know kevin bacon. I was just going to i was just going to say, right. You know, it was coming right, right, right, right, right. How many connections do you think im away from . Kevin bacon. Six degrees, bro. Maybe less, maybe less. Well knowing you, sal, its probably like 2 or 3, right . Yeah. There you go. But i do like that when someones like, hey, your brother used to go to school with my. And then youre like, oh, my god. You know what happens a lot in our business, especially someone like me whos worked, you know, many places, many places. So its always like, oh, you know, this person, you know this person. Im always connected to these people all over the country and which, you know, was not the intent. You just find out when you meet someone. Maybe i come to i come to work. I worked in sacramento years ago and im connected. We have a connection like that. Yes. My old College Roommate who grew up in alameda and we worked together on our first little tiny station in yuma, arizona. You worked with her years later . Yeah. Yeah. We just found out like, you know, six months ago. That didnt happen. I love that. Yeah, it is a small world scientifically proven. There you go. All right, lets focus on whats happening out here in the Oakland Hills today, because new this morning, a sign of appreciation from a parent at Skyline High School in oakland who described Safety Measures by school employees. There to protect students following a shooting yesterday. There were no injuries yesterday, two people were taken into custody. Well turn to ctvs Amanda Quintana live at skyline with that and the School Districts response to what happened on campus. Amanda well, garcia, theres no class today. So students will not be coming to campus. But im told that the campus is still open for staff because theyre going to be preparing to support students when they do come back. The superintendent says that this also gives students some time to really understand what happened yesterday and process this, how the lockdown went. Now, one parent was here. This morning, actually standing in front of the school with a sign thanking staff for keeping his two children safe. Jt says when the school was put on lockdown after shots were fired around 1130 yesterday morning, the janitor let his son into a closet and he hid there. His daughter hid in a closet in the back of a classroom. The lockdown lasted 2. 5 hours. They both had their phones, though, so they were able to text their dad that they were okay. Police say they arrested two people and detained two others, but they wont say whether any of those people are students at skyline, how theyre involved or what may have led to the shooting. Many parents rushed to the campus after hearing the news, terrified their student was hurt after multiple violent incidents at this school, some parents want to see metal detectors added. You shouldnt have to be like this. And i think that we definitely metal detectors. Sheriff, you speak to a lot of parents here. They are willing to say the same thing. We have to have a little more faith in parents and kids that are going to do the right thing. And but, yeah, its the track record isnt great. So maybe that is a place that we have to go. You may remember a student stabbed another student here at skyline in december and parents say there was another incident recently when a student was pistol whipped. Currently, there are no schools in used with metal detectors. In a statement to families, the usd superintendent said staff will be given resources to help conduct restorative conversations with students when they return to campus and Behavioral Health staff will be on campus as well to offer their support. The district says the lockdown and this response, thats their normal, normal response, their normal protocol to incidents like this. But they say they will be looking into it, looking at their protocols to see if theres any way that they can improve. Live in oakland, Amanda Quintana, ktvu fox two news. Thank you, amanda. Some people who live in the area have previously sued over the amount of cars and visitors failing streets nearby. The trailhead. Its just extra stress that we dont need. They consistently vote to restrict access to this park at this entrance. Understand, theres a lot of animosity in this neighborhood towards park visitors. The Park District needs to know that the public wants this cultural artifact, this monument restored to its former prime. The east Bay Regional Parks district has recovered the fallen pole, but still hasnt said what theyre going to do with it. All right. Lets head things over to Steve Paulson right now to talk about the forecast for today. We got a little sunshine out here, but still still pretty foggy. Always look to see if i could see salesforce over there. You could see the building. But not much else. Now, a long time ago, right after the earth cooled, i lived in fremont. D a couple of 30s briefly, mainly 40s in the mountains. 80s on the las vegas palm springs. And then 50, 60, 70 up and down the coast. Were just getting a series of these little spins in the atmosphere. And as they rotate in, they enhance the fog. They keep that onshore breeze in place. We are getting a little south wind on the coast, which means the water temps have come up there, upper 50s and low 60s, as they also suppress the high in the desert southwest. But after tomorrow, the last one in the series will scoot through and thatll allow the high to Start Building in building in. Now it doesnt. One year ago we were crazy hot, if you remember. Sometimes you dont want to remember remind people of that. But well start a warm up but nothing we cant handle. And as long as these systems keep moving into the pacific northwest, thatll keep things in check here. But after tomorrow, we will be getting a warm up. Im going to the mountains. Any more rain or thunderstorms . No looks quiet. Quiet. In fact, the next 7 to 10 days looks pretty quiet here. 6070s and 80s on the temps here. Bigger fog bank, thats for sure. More of an onshore breeze. So even with the sun, itll be a little cooler today. It should be nice for us this time of year, 60s and 70s, 80s. After thursday, friday we start to warm up. Experiencing Mental Health problems as doctors and counselors are proposing some solutions. They include Early Intervention and destigmatizing the issue of depression and anxiety. Now Research Shows 15 to 20 of all us children report struggles with Mental Health. The percentages rose after the pandemic and difficulties with learning, concentrating and remembering. They might also have lower motivation for school nowadays if a college doesnt have a Mental Health support system on campus or counselors, i think that would be a concern. American Psychological Association reports more than 60 of College Students meet the criteria for at least one Mental Health problem. Now parents are advised to keep an open line of communication with their children. And if a parent or guardian suspects a child is experiencing some type of Mental Health issue, start by contacting the familys primary care provider for help. Well soon have a covid booster to help protect us as cases surge into the fall. Griff jenkins has more from washington. The pandemic may be over, but covids not going anywhere. The cdc reports covid hospitalizations went up more than 15 last week, with a 17 increase in covid related deaths. But theres more help coming. Moderna releasing new data on wednesday showing its updated covid 19 vaccine will likely be effective against the new Covid Subvariant ba2 86. We have more tools and systems available today to help communities this fall and winter season, including safe, updated vaccines that will be available midseptember. But as the virus continues to spread, some schools are bringing back those old mandates, including masking. As students return to classrooms. One school here in the d. C. Area seeing a rise in cases, writing to parents, quote staff and identified classes or activities will be required to mask while in school for the next ten days, except while eating or drinking. And in the midwest, the university of michigan laying down the rules for students requiring them to isolate off campus if their symptomatic people can still protect themselves from this new covid 19 variant by 2. 86. By following our lessons learned, the school mandates return despite nih studies showing a lack of correlation between mandates and a reduction in student cases, prompting ohio senator j. D. Vance to propose a bill that would ban federal mask mandates through the end of 2024. They use these mandates to turn one half the country against the other half of the country. Thats what all tyrants do. And theyre even bringing the masks back at the white house after the first lady tested positive on tuesday in washington, griff jenkins, ktvu fox two news. Well, the start of the school year brings all the usual concerns about sickness spreading in the classroom along with a relatively new issue of covid. Lets talk more about keeping children healthy and their classrooms free of illness by welcoming doctor shonda johnson, pediatrician at Kaiser PermanenteOakland Medical Center to the nine. Thanks for being with us again, doctor. Good morning. Thank you so much for having me. Its great to have you. A lot of parents are sort of on edge if their little one gets sick. I think the number one concern is how do we know if its a cold versus covid . Excellent question. And as you said, you know, kids are back in school and getting settled in the classroom and viruses are settling in as well. And so it can be confusing to parents sometimes to figure out which illness their child may have. Of course, what we most commonly see is the common cold, which is an upper respiratory virus or a group of viruses that usually starts with a scratchy throat, runny nose, and then goes into cough and congestion when most kids get over it in about 7 to 10 days, the flu hovers a little different. It usually hits hits you like a mack truck. You have fevers, chills, body aches along with the cough, runny nose and sore throat and covid has is still around, as we just saw in the previous segment, it and the symptoms mimic a lot of what we see with the flu. And so certainly if your child has those symptoms, you want to make sure to test them, test yourself as well. And if we have a positive result, make sure that we are isolating and masking appropriately to protect the more vulnerable in our communities and in our families. I think covid are not many parents know to look for a fever and that a sign of a fever could be a sign of trouble is the universal advice. If a child has had a fever of 100 degrees or more in the past 24 hours, they should stay home now, correct . Yes its a 100. 4 or higher. Definitely. They should stay home and actually not return to school or daycare until theyve been fever free for at least 24 hours. Yeah, i know. One of the things that my boy has learned many years ago in preschool is something that we still talk about today, and that is sneeze in your chicken wing. The first thing they were taught at preschool was if you feel a sneeze coming on, you know, crook your elbow like a chicken wing and then sneeze right in there, dont dont share it all with the rest of the class. Absolutely. I definitely agree to abide by the chicken wing protocol for sneezing. Absolutely absolutely. What else do we tell the super little ones . The think to a good handwashing is always important to help our little ones to do that that with my own kids, as soon as they come home from school, i have them wash their hands and even change out of the clothes that they had on that day to sort of decrease bringing things into the home. So good handwashing, clothes. Sure i sure do. I sure do. Get into their comfy jammies and it certainly other things to help make sure our kids immune systems are humming along as making sure that they get proper rest. Theyre getting regular exercise. Theyre eating healthy, wellbalanced meals with fruits and veggies and staying well hydrated. Lots of water. And when youre more hydrated, its harder for those viruses to stick in those nasal passages and throat. So those are things that can help protect us this season. Let me ask about slightly older children here. You know, i try to tell my two young teenage boys that they have to start with a full tank. Right. You have to get good sleep, eat well hydrated like you said. Does that really help prevent sort of a faster, deeper fall into illness if it should come upon our household . Absolutely. Again those those are steps we can take to help keep our immune system in good fighting condition. And the other thing, too, you know, there unfortunately, there is no vaccine for the common cold. But we do have vaccines for flu and for covid. And we recommend that you get vaccinated or get your booster as early in the season as possible because it takes about two weeks for most vaccines to fully activate in your immune system. So then you can have the protection that you need for the season. The time is now. Well you know, doctor, i learned something from you. Ive never met anyone who makes their children change their clothes when they come home from school, wear a shoes off household, and sometimes thats a battle. But im going to go home and tell my boys about you so theyll hopefully feel that shoes off is not a problem. Excellent. Okay dr. Shonda johnson from kaiser oakland, thank you so much for joining us. Have a happy, Healthy School year. Thank you. Same to you. And wishing all the kids out there the same. Thank you. Absolutely. Thank you so much. A new wall street journal poll shows both candidates have 46 support. The same poll also finds 73 of voters say they think President Biden is too old to serve. Another term in the white house. I think right now people are saying, well, what do i want the president and what they want in the president is somebody much younger other than the man they have in the white house right now. But again, if theyre faced with a choice between him and a man whos only three years younger than him, i think that, you know, that age becomes less of a factor for 47 of those polled, said former President Donald Trumps age is an issue. Political analysts say the 2024 election will likely come down to a small number of votes in key swing states. And Vice President kamala harris, whos in indonesia right now, was asked if she believes President Biden is too old to serve a second term in the white house. A substantial amount of time we spend together is in the oval office, where i see how how his ability to understand issues and weave through complex issues in a way that no one else can to make smart and important decisions on behalf of the American People have played out. Vice president harris was also asked if something happened to President Biden, if she would be prepared to step into the role. Joe bidens going to be fine, so that is not going to come to fruition. It will be tested for 30 days on spring and summer weekends, commuters and those who live in the region will be exempt from the fee. And at this point, its unclear as to how the city plans to make visitors pay. Final approval is expected next week. So im guessing it might be a move to maybe cut down on overcrowd crowding. Ive had friends who went to europe over the summer and they said just about every tourist attraction, everything youve seen on the calendar or in the movies was packed, right . Well, i dont know. I mean, you know, 550 if youre already going, doesnt seem like a lot like 1500 for the plane ticket. Whats another . Well, i mean, most places, you know, they have a tourist tax anyway in the hotels. People in danville, they are demanding answers from pga about the number of Power Outages theyve had to endure so far. This summer. Town leaders and Community Members say they have been in the dark too often this summer and the Power Company responded by sending its bay area Vice President to apologize. Is the level of reliability that youve seen in and around the danville area over the over this summer has not been acceptable. Aaron johnson says one possible reason for the large number of outages is to substation lines that serve danville have had broken equipment. So the utility has had to reroute power through a third substation in which caused other problems with that heavier loading. And all three circuits. We did have some equipment give out, he says. Another reason is the enhanced powerline safety settings, which are designed to shut off power if a tree falls on power lines or an animal disturbs the system, it can also be caused if the equipment detects another failure. Its all part of the Program Designed to prevent power lines from causing fires. Because of the work that we were doing in this area, we had a lot of circuits connected together and it made it harder for us to isolate those high wildfire areas into small pockets. We asked pga for specific numbers on Power Outages. Company Officials Say their records show the danville area had a total of 31 outages between june, july and august. Pga says it has taken action that could prevent other Power Outages. The danville mayor says he hopes pga can make sure downtown danville and its businesses are given priority for outage prevention and that pga will improve its communication with the community. There is no intent right now or even in the future that i can foresee where we would be combing through the amount of data that we would be collecting through this to look for potential crime, we would be relying on on people to notify us of something that occurred and then we would that would trigger the search, the cameras do not include facial Recognition Technology and the city says cameras will follow guidance suggested from the aclu, where any data will be automatically purged after 30 days. The city is still waiting to hear back if it will get the state grant to pay for the cameras.
