It is september nine today and you know what that means. Obviously, it means happy birthday, North Korea and i hoped you remember to get them something nice. It traces its founding to this date in 1948. Today was full of terrified North Korean citizens marching through the streets dressed Identically Doing Synchronized things with flags and banners all pledging loyalty till death to this third generation of totalitarian dictators who have ruled that country since its findings in 1948. The cult of personality that is the North Korean dictatorship involves essentially the worship of the Kim Family Is Gods on earth. And today on the occasion of North Koreas birthday, the chinese president and the president of russia Vladimir Putin send warm congratulations to North Korea and warm congratulations to kim jongun praising his dictatorship promising close relations and cooperation in the future. At some level, maybe the Birthday Card from China And Russia from North Korea makes sense because both China And Russia border North Korea and all three of those countries are dictatorships of one type or another but they are in different votes and russia used to be communist and briefly tried on the idea of being a democracy and now with putin it has devolved into a dictatorship with russia currently running the land as Land War in europe since World War ii in china is a dictatorship with china still communist in china huge Population Wife and in terms of the economic and geopolitical influence in china of course is the global superpower beside the united states. So when you do look at it this way it as is three dictatorship so why do these two Big Swaggering countries, China And Russia embarrassed themselves with this small fry aligning themselves with, honestly the Freak Show that is North Korea. North korea for decades has been in competition for the top spot globally is the strangest most backward and repressive place on earth. North korea is known for the Mass Cult like spectacles forced on a population that literally have been taught to worship its leaders as gods. They have been told that every time the leader goes golfing every holy gets a holeinone and you are not allowed to laugh at that. And in a country where the dear leader brags about assassinating his relatives using antiaircraft guns, a country now regularly floating balloons full of trash and into Neighboring South Korea because, sure, why not because that is something normal countries do and a country known he really for the Mass Starvation of its own people while its government committed massive immeasurable resources into becoming a nuclear rogue state. Whose sole exports now are statesponsored cybercrime and weapons. And to the other Rogue States of the world. North korea is tiny, very strange, backward. It is a geopolitical culdesac of a country. It is the international epitome of a Pariah Nation and for all the right reasons. Because of that, it says something a little bit unfortunate about these leaders of these two big countries that they would bother to go kiss up to the North Korean Dictator Today on the birthday of that country. Why bother . Why do that . So who on earth thinks the murderous Humpty Dumpty ridiculous totalitarian dictator of North Korea needs international praise and sucking up to him . Who thinks that . Kim jongun, i have a very good relationship with them and a different kind of a guy but he probably thinks the same thing about me and we have a different kind of relationship. We have a very good relationship. I also say that, by the way with respect to North Korea. Kim jongun who have gotten to know extremely well and the First Lady has gotten to know him and i think she would agree with me, he is a man with a country that has tremendous potential. I was really being tough, and so was he and we have a back and forth and then we fell in love. Really. He wrote me beautiful letters and they are great letters. We fell in love. But, you know what, Donald Trump said they fell in love and how horrible is that . So unpresident ial. I think he really wants to do a great job for North Korea. And i do trust him. And i think you trust me and i trust him. I like him and he likes me and am i allowed to say that . What is the constituency for that in the united states and even at that really sweaty rally that he is doing there, he starts talking about falling in love with the North Korean dictator. His audience was like, yes. Is it okay for me to say that i like him and we love Each Other . And all of these people at this rally are like you go and do we clap for this . What single person in the united states is like, you know what, what i am looking for in a politician is somebody who has the hots for the totalitarian dictator from North Korea, the guy with the head of hair and i am looking for a politician who thinks that guy is awesome and maybe an american president who tells Each Other in his own administration that he really likes the way the dictator of North Korea rules his country. And he likes things to be more like that here which Donald Trump did. Who is this for . What domestic audience or political Audience And Purpose does this serve . What is that about . And in her recent Book Autocracy Inc. And applebaum argues that all of these various dictators, they all end up supporting and praising Each Other and helping Each Other. And this is because of mutual interest. Because no matter what they are like individually or no matter what the system of government is in their country, whether they are leftwing dictators or right wing dictators or cuckoo for Cocoa Puffs dictators who think they are gods on earth, they have a mutual interest in doing what they can to denigrate and discredit democracy. They all have an interest in making sure that the people, wherever they are dont get any big dreams or ideas about wising up and replacing an authoritarian system with a more democratic form of democratic government and no matter what you say about them they all want power and accumulate as much wealth as possible and keep it for themselves and their families and rule for life. They all have that in common. And so they formed kind of a club and admire Each Others tactics in repressing their own people in the opposition in judiciary and press. Not only do they admire Each Others tactics but copied them and support Each Other in doing those kinds of tactics wherever they can. And they support Each Other around the world so russia gives money to Nicolas Maduro in venezuela and the chinese president sent a note to kim Jongun Today on his birthday and they voted in favor of russia taking crimea from ukraine and why do you care . And hungry try to stop you from helping ukraine defend itself when it was invaded by russia. China helps Russia Wage that war in iran and North Korea and they send them weapons and what is the connection between these very different kinds of countries all over the world . Those are all very different kinds of countries but all led by rulers who are all interested in staying in power for life and making sure the people of those countries never rise up against the Strongman Form of leadership that keeps them under the boot. Whatever differences exist between them whether they are fascists or communists or whether they are theocratic or worship of god on earth a short man with a terrible haircut who loves spam and cognac, they are all united in the matter what you can say about how different they are, they are all united and want to do all they can to destroy democracy wherever it exists. This is particularly the united states of america, which should not and cannot serve as a beacon for the world to aspire to democratic change. They want no one anywhere to think it is possible let alone desirable to throw a strongman approach. At the Democratic National Convention a few weeks ago in her speech accepting the democratic Partys President ial nomination, Vice President harris tried to explain the phenomenon like this. And know this. I will never hesitate to take whatever action is necessary to defend our forces and interests against iran and iran backed terrorists and i wont cozy up to tyrants and to tatars like kim jongun who are rooting for trump, who are rooting for trump. Because, you know, they know that he is easy to manipulate with flattery and favors. They know that Trump Wont Hold autocrats accountable because he wants to be an autocrat himself. Because he wants to be an autocrat himself. I feel like a lot of different politicians have pointed out how unseemly and how not in keeping it is with the entire rest of american history for a former president like trump or a president like trump to have praised dictators and cozied up to them and say the dictators of the world are the people he liked best and a lot of people have pointed out how unseemly unamerican and creepy that was in Kamala Harris with one of the only politicians who stood up against him and said the reason youre doing this is because you we you want what they have and you want to be an autocrat. And naming it is an important part of confronting it. Tomorrow night, Vice President harris and former President Trump will face Each Other in what may well be the only president ial debate we will get this year. The first one we had between Trump And President Joe Biden ended up being effectively the most consequential debate in history of the united states for all the obvious reasons. Nobody knows how consequential Tomorrows Debate will be, but tens of millions of americans will tune in to watch. Everybody will be bracing themselves one way or another to see what happens. There is something happening in the campaign is to get closer to that debate. It is a debate for which Kamala Harris is already signaled that she is prepared and ready to call out Donald Trump for wanting to be an autocrat. And that is that as we get closer to that debate and as we have gotten further along in time from the democratic convention, the Strongman Stuff from trump has become more explicit and gory and with almost each passing day. You would expect he would try to moderate his image for the general election, right . However hard right you attack from the primary campaign but once you vanquish your rivals and you are the nominee then you go back to center and try to reassure people and dont believe things they have heard about you and i am sort of a Centrist Character who wants whats best for us all and that is how you campaign for president in his country. Not if you are Donald Trump. As we get closer to this first debate in getting further along in the campaign, he gets further out there in terms of what he is promising and what he is joking about. On friday he started joking again about the man who broke into the home of former House Speaker Nancy pelosi and smashed her husband in the head with a Hammer Fracturing his skull. He put that back in his repertoire as things he tells jokes about now. He is doing that now. On saturday, he made a promise to a rally in wisconsin that when he gets back in office and starts mass deportations of millions of people, he said, getting them out would be a bloody story. And later that same night he said in writing that when he is back in office, there will be longterm Prison Sentences for his political enemies that he said will be prosecuted at levels unfortunately never seen before in our country. And who will be subject to these sentences . Lawyers, political operatives, donors, illegal voters and corrupt officials and among the people he is now targeting for long Prison Sentences are people who run elections and people who donate money to candidates. Everybody is going to prison if he gets back in. He put that in writing. And in the last few Weeks Trump has promoted Social Media images like these with a. I. Generated images showing people like Nancy Pelosi and Vice President harris and President Biden and his son locked up and in prison. And it wasnt that hilarious when the husband of that democratic politician had his Skull Fractured with his hammer and is in that a great Laugh Line for my rallies and shouldnt we all laugh at that . After he ordered the us military to build his camps to hold millions of people, he promises what will happen then will be a bloody story. This is the direction his campaign is taking as it gets deeper into campaign season, closer to the first debate in closer to election day. And, you know, on top of the demonizing and gory fantasies he has been spewing about immigrants in particular, his Running Mate Jd vance along with his Billionaire Donor Elon musk in his president ial Advisor Stephen Millionaire miller have boosted and promoted a bizarre totally false Conspiracy Theory that immigrants on top of anything else you said about them are stealing Peoples Household pets and eating them, which is insane and isnt true but once you get people riled up to do their worst, who among us thinks that little Fact Checking will be enough to stop what youve started . This growth even darker than usual turn from the republican nominee comes at a very late moment in the president ial campaign. It comes at a time when something that we cant ignore is raising its head again in political circles. I cant even believe i have to say this. Part of the News Cycle again from them is Holocaust Denial. I say that it has come up again from them because of course we have had a trump hosted dinner for Kanye West after he said he was going Deaf Con 3 on jewish people posting swastikas online and the Dinner Companion was a selfavowed with an online following and we had a reached point of awkwardness in the Trump Campaign in one of their largest donors and remember when trump said the Medal Of Honor was a bad thing because members of the military who received that highest Military Honor that we give us a nation are usually shot and killed in defense of the country by the time they receive that award . Do remember why he said that . The reason he said that is because and what led them to that is because he said the Medal Of Honor is bad compared to another metal that he said was better because the other when he said was better was the one he gave to his Donor Mariam Adelson that years ago and he didnt give it to her recently but while he was president but why is he bringing it up now . Was trying to make nice to her. He had to because he wants her money for the campaign again this year. He had to make something up to her because a bunch of Text Messages were leaked in which is Running Mate Jd vance talked smack about her and specifically her late husband and the disparaging messages about the family of hers was leaked by the press for whom the person Jd Vance sent the text in this is a man whom Jd Vance was texting to a lot including texting this man and disparaging remarks about a famous jewish republican political donor and the man who he was texting with about that, the guy who leaked to the messages to the press is himself most notorious for being a denier of the holocaust. And now Senator Vance is due to do a big public event with the former Fox News Host who just spoke at the rnc and we then follow that up with the big public Facing Interview with yet another Holocaust Denier. Whom he praised as the best Public Historian In America, a man who said the united states fought on the wrong side in World War ii and Hitler Wasnt the real Bad Guy in World War ii and hitler has gone to heaven and who said it is a myth that the never really set out that the Ginni Thomas 33 never killed jewish people. This comes up over and over again. It isnt just something that is impolite. It is really consequential and really worrying that this is a recurring thing in this president ial campaign. That this president ial campaign and this president ial candidate keeps turning up new associations with Holocaust Deniers and every few weeks or months. Because why do people do this and what is this for, Holocaust Denial and what purpose does it serve . They dont think there has been a big misunderstanding or been some good Faith Mistake about what really happened in history. What Holocaust Deniers are contending is that a deliberate lie has been concocted to make us believe something that isnt actually true and to make us believe thE History we have been taught about and what happened in World War ii as a hope, perpetrated by the jewish people to make germany look bad when germany doesnt deserve that and when hitler really wasnt so bad. Holocaust deniers say not only did the holocaust not really happen but the myth was invented as a hoax to make fascism look bad when really they are not bad at all but good. That is the first level implication of Holocaust Denial and not only a bad and dangerous thing because it is an overt effort to rehabilitate Fascism And Nazism and whitewash what is bad about those things but also bad because it entails a Conspiracy Theory about the World Today , which ultimately demands we get rid of democracy and get ourselves a Strongman Government instead. Because Holocaust Denial isnt just i am fuzzy on what happened and it was a long time ago. Holocaust denial particularly the kind being promoted that Jd Vance appears with, this variety of denial is the contention that there is a conspiracy that is teaching you a lie and trying to make you believe a myth about some bad thing having happened to the jewish people that didnt really happen and why have we been taught this about a bad thing happening to the jewish people when it didnt happen . That is the jews teaching you that myth because it serves jewish interest because jews are so powerful and conniving they have invented this fakE History to make it all believable in the contention of the Holocaust Deniers is nothing bad actually happened to the jews but you have been manipulated into believing it did because jews are secretly this unimaginably powerful group with mine controlling to get what they want and what do they want . They want white christians to look bad so they can be in charge. They want to destroy the white race and christianity, rule the world. The implication of this is that if there is a group that powerful conspiring against christians everywhere, what could stop them . There is certainly no point in engaging in democratic political processes because, if the real power is in the hands of this secret evil elite operating behind the scenes, nothing you do in socalled politics will ever matter and the evil cabal will keep pulling the strings so dont participate in politics because it is a Ruse And Hoax and you know there is an evil conspiracy running everything. In that formulation, democracy is for suckers and naove and maybe even evil if it allows these evil powerful groups like jewish people to participate in democratic processes along with us and the christians who are evermore their victim. So in the short term, before you rush to the elimination Nest Murder and that Holocaust Denial of inevitability leads to the consequent of perpetrating this in platforming this and telling these lies, defining jewish people is perpetrating a hoax against white christians or even defining jewish people is the secret power of the government of Culture And Finance or whatever but the consequence of it, what you tell people is that we should give up on democracy because we will need to take extreme action against these very very very all powerful, evil enemies within. So maybe we will start with camps for millions of people and long Prison Sentences for everybody who identifies an enemy and what did he say . It will be a bloody story. None of this is good. I mean, happy birthday, North Korea. I wish you all the best. But none of this is good. We are headed into the first and likely only president ial debate of the campaign and the republican ticket is not just led by a selfprofessed fan of the weirdest and worst dictators around the world but it is a selfprofessed dictatorship himself and promising at his rallies that there will be bloodshed. He is getting his crowds to laugh at deadly violence arbitrated against his political enemies and turned a Skull Fracture into a Laugh Line. He is promising to in prison his Enemies En Masse and telling the crowds his supporters who have committed criminal acts of violence on his behalf will be sprung all from prison because they are his martyrs. And now his Running Mate is about to do a ticketed Tour Event with the most high Profile A Media Figure for Holocaust Denier because Hitler Wasnt really the Bad Guy in the united states was on the wrong side of that fight. Jd vance. And with that as the republican Party Platform this year headed into the first debate, the president ial race is tied between the two parties. The character of the race on the republican side, the De Facto platform of the republican party here isnt just a little Red Flag for danger but all the alarms going off all at once. There has never ever been a president ial contest in this country like this. Like this. St E History of this sport. It is Propaganda Shared Resources between them that promotes one propaganda to promote another. As well as themes like the degeneracy of democracy or the stability of autocracy and the evil of america. Those are some of the opening lines of autocracy incorporated the dictators who want to rule the world the latest book from an Apple Bomb and i keep finding myself coming back to this as the campaign gets later and later in the republican side of it gets more and more explicit about their hostility to the american system of government and she is the host of the new podcast called autocracy In America and thank you very much for joining us and i do appreciate your being here. I know you could hear the Opening Segment i did but first of all let me ask you that we dont always agree on these things and certainly you are a distinguished historian but is there anything i said that you think i am misstating are getting the wrong way around especially with Holocaust Denial and its dangers . I think you hit it exactly right. I would add something which is criticizing Americas Role in the second World War implying we are on the wrong side and we shouldve been with hitler against churchill and the Holocaust Deniers, tucker carlson, Jd Vance are undermining one of the really few historical moments that unifies us and we have a very complicated history and people take different sides in different issues and one of the few things we have agreed on is we are on the right side of the second World War and we did something good by fighting and we helped save democracy and rebuild europe after the war and one of the things that defines america in the second half of the 21st century in the first half of the current century and if you undermined that you take away one of the i if you shatter a country or destroy its sense of what it is or make people doubt the system in History And Everything they believed in, and was churchill even our Friend Kevin you prepare the country for something very radically different. I think there are people around trump who want that. It is taken the moral cornerstone for us as a country and blowing it up which has all of the architectural consequences you might think. But let me ask you after Vice President harris got the nomination there was talk among pendants that she should ship the Campaign Message away from this idea that trump poses a threat to democracy saying this kind of language makes him seem like a more powerful figure than he is and instead focus on making him seem small and pathetic and somebody who has studied these threats and transformations, you make about that Count Elation . I do think you can do both but the one really successful election against an autocratic leadership that happened a few months ago in poland. One of the ways it was won was not just by saying the Ruling Party are dictators but by connecting their autocratic instincts two things that people felt so in poland, one of the big issues was abortion and making people understand it was because the Ruling Party had illegally captured the courts because they transformed the courts in an unconstitutional way and literally women were dying and people felt the real impact of it. I think harris could do that. I actually thought her speech at the convention was very effective talking about Americas Role in the world in a way that reminded americans that we used to be proud of what we were and who we are and what we stand for. But i also think you can connect that around to what people experience in their daily lives in a powerful way. Headed into the debate tomorrow, obviously, i think it is a little surprising to see the rhetoric and the promises and joking get get closer to the campaign and the debate. If a candidate or major party is campaigning for top office by threatening longterm Prison Sentences for all kinds of people who oppose him or threatening these system of government upending things that he is promising but either examples of that around the world when people ran for office on that kind of a platform and won and it turned out to be nothing to worry about . A bluff . No is the short answer. It seems to me that what trump is doing is by evoking violence and by making people afraid or by talking about terrible things that will happen, he makes people want dictatorship. It is really in times of Chaos And Crisis that people turn to strongmen. He is trying to create this feeling that we are living in a crisis and, therefore, you should win the election i think there is also something else going on beginning to feel he may not win having been certain of it a month or two ago. He is also preparing his people and supporters for a second attempt to steal the election so the implication is if he doesnt win, that it is because somebody cheated or because of the local illegal immigrants and all of that is a preparation for that. He is trying to evoke fear and prepare people for more violence. Thank you. In arizona, just after the 2020 election this is outside of the Vote Counting Center in phoenix and they were tabulating the ballots inside and trump supporters, at least some of them armed or outside the building doing this. Some of what they were doing was calling out Election Workers by name and some had to be escorted in and out by police with Arizona One of the toughest locations in the country for intimidation and threats of violence direct to that Election Workers in direct it at Election Officials in particular. Arizona was one of the states where fake republican elect tours signed fraudulent certificates falsely certifying when trump got the state when he lost. 11 Fake Electors were indicted in that plot. The state republican party responded by choosing three of the people who had been indicted to become delegates to the republican national convention. Thank you for your service. Now as the 2024 election approaches, arizona has more to contend with. The Washington Post reported that Election Officials and three battleground states including arizona received identical letters from the American Conservative Union and the letters explained the american conservative Union Plan to monitor Ballot Drop boxes and scrutinize those using them to vote and it prompted concerns from officials about privacy and the possibility of a voter intimidation. Adrian is a former top Maricopa Official for elections and now is the Secretary Of State and he told the post in response to that, that the whole thing is an absurd sham to cover up direct efforts to intimidate voters by a bunch of Cpac Recruited Vigilantes and they said it is to intimidate voters and we wont be cooperating with them. Joining us now is the Secretary Of State and thank you for being here and it is nice to meet you in person. Nice to see you too. Everybody has i. C. E. Eyes on arizona and not just worrying about a contentious campaign but worried about Voter Suppression and certification of the vote and intimidation of voters running the system and what should the country know about arizona . The same thing they should know about the rest of the officials across the entire united states and these are good civil servants doing great work across the entirety of our nation and in arizona they have done exceptionally good work for a long time with a little bit of turnover but we still have the same Character Approach with neighbors, friends, relatives, american citizens like you and me doing a great job and that is what people can know about elections in arizona and in the united states. We are the ones that run the elections. When the criminal indictment was brought in arizona against republicans who submitted their names as false electors claiming trump had won when in fact the biden had won, that prosecution had potential consequences with the indictment itself as a consequence but serious consequences for those people in the republican party responded by giving new, essentially honors and leadership positions to a significant number of those indicted which was a real message of support for what they had done and i wonder if you think that sort of political Decision And Leadership makes things harder . You can say that but at the end of the day our job is to run our elections and we stick with the fundamentals and make sure things are good to go and leave the campaigning and politics to them and as an election administrator, i certainly know what my duty is to operate within those bounds and i do have my political opinion too and i am a statewide elected democrat at the dnc and i have my personal choices when it comes to voting but i can separate my duty from my opinion. I think there are a lot of people who confused the two. So i think really we are in a good space in arizona as far as Election Administration is concerned with the messages that other people send for their intended audiences is a political thing that we wont get too involved in. What if you had a change in terms of preparation and resources to make sure that Election Administration is safe and done properly . How much time do we have and since i was elected and took office in January Of 2023 we have revamped just about everything and the only Secretary Of State we had chris were other politicians and we didnt have administrators coming up from the counties with them. We had a look at our training and give to the 15 counties in arizona the resources they needed from the perspective of, look, you guys are the one Recruiting Poll workers and registrars and running the Tabulation Equipment and doing all the work and we are regulator and we are a Bottom Up State and the Secretary Of State is a topdown position and they run everything. Not here. We have that different perspective which has informed everything we have done from working closely with the critical Infrastructure Security Agency in the department of Homeland Security all the way to doing, injecting Artificial Intelligence and deep fakes indoor tabletop exercises with Election Officials, Law Enforcement officials and members of the media that we brought into this training so people can understand the processes better so they tell the story, the folks in the media. They wont have to learn the system first and then try to tell the story but they could already have that background information. We are working with the entire community of folks who have to deal with this to make sure everybody is prepared. On that last point that commitment as a member of the media i want this but actually it is a national Security Matter around elections that members of the media are well positioned and well informed to be able to tell people what is misinformation and what is real at a time when a lot of these wars will be fought on the Information Space having an informed media. Absolutely in understanding these complex processes in the technology and rules behind it doesnt happen immediately so when somebody out of town comes here, we have to make sure they have that piece of information just like the elections officials and our boaters and make sure people are informed and they can perform their duties and we can move on with the rest of our lives.
