The capitalist case for COVID-19 relief
In March, when the COVID-19 pandemic first hit America, Democrats and Republicans in Washington united to pass the CARES Act, which provided a quick bridge across rough waters. But now, with COVID-19 spreading exponentially and the U.S. job market sputtering again, the congressional debate over another relief bill is devolving into a hackneyed fight between supposedly free-spending Democrats and skinflint Republicans. Critics on both sides seem to have lost sight of a fundamental question: What outcome would best serve the interests of businesses, workers and markets? As two business leaders who have seen a lot in their day, we are quite clear on the answer: Pass the bipartisan $908 billion plan proposed by a bipartisan group of House and Senate members without delay.
