Saying it s definitely the place to be it was really interesting Rosa and Rosa certain agree was the year one of the founders who came in to have a chat with me she was telling me that one of the oldest people who went in to actually learn to skate was like a 65 year old woman that s pretty safe there s no excuse absolutely not well the been given the kids the opportunity develop their skills and skating and be a maxing since 2007 but now the skate park has been the threat that rules I d like to see as one of the founding members she came in for a chat recently and while she was here we talked about how this talk of developers coming in and building a retail site what the council are opposing the plans and I want to know why the skate park was so important to the local community we have children age 5 people age 65 so sometimes I think people here skate park and they think oh it s the kids there s almost like an anti social behavior association I would like you know skate as the like public s right you know like it can have the sixty s and that kind of like punk attitude there is a degree of that which is true you know these are people who ve come from a subculture you know skating and b.m.x. Riding it also takes a huge amount of skill to do that stuff you don t learn that overnight and people kind of get this idea that oh you just become good at it you have to have places to practice that stuff it doesn t just happen by itself and if you re going to create places for people to practice that kind of stuff then in my opinion you need to make sure that you re looking after people in those spaces you re respecting their passion and the commitment that people have for those arts and those sports on those coaches . And you don t just say oh if there s an outdoor skate park there s not even a toilet so then the police come and someone s having a way in a bush Well where are they supposed to go you wouldn t build a leisure center and not put toilets in it so for me it s partly about supporting young people in their interests and not just young people but a lot of adults coming to office in the east as well and it s partly about saying yes it might be a bit alternative it might not be what the mainstream often is but rather than criminalizing young people rather than telling them that being empty social gives them alternatives and you give them the space of for help them to develop a skatepark is also a place where you develop basing social skills like there s all kinds of social networks that develop you know people come to our place maybe on their own the 1st time feeling a bit intimidated a bit daunted we run begin to sessions that give people a chance to get to know each other that also how people develops a skatepark at a cat so like spatial awareness collective responsibility but also create in thinking so we sneaked drama games in there we don t say that s. Essentially that s what we all know now all the secrets but so we do all of that to try and create an environment that isn t intimidating what people do come and find friendships and some incredible friendships have developed you know throughout people coming no no no children who come to us when they re like 7 years old they ve now got be heads in a driving cars and it s we had to make me feel very old it s a space where I think the so many more skills develop and I think for a lot of people as well it channels you need for adrenalin or risk taking but in this in a managed space so for young people who do have a lot of energy need to let it out rather than again being told that you re wrong for being you know you know wanting to jump off things all whatever why not give people a place where that s what feel that to do and they can express themselves exactly I mean it s interesting because I was reading on your website you know the future of dynamic since she you create a national scale center for extremes for. Street office and performance in a village for alternative education training health and wellbeing I mean how closely to make this a reality unfortunately a lot of it always does come down to money on the resources that are available for things and we have been under threat now for about 5 years on the site that we re in Tim s of this development plan and the landlord needs to sell the site and we understand he put his money into the site at the start of you know 2007 when the market was really high and then the recession hit and he s lost money on the site and on that building ever since books I think there needs to be a longer term view on things and the council seem to be a kind of understanding and I think that the idea of actually in the long run providing places for young people to be providing spaces for people to develop and to price also social enterprises our preference but you know to develop enterprise providing spaces for young people to develop themselves and for communities to come together and create their own resource not just depend on big multinational companies here at the end of the day don t care about local communities really you know yes they might provide jobs but they can just as easily close up and move somewhere else that s prefer you know that s preferable to them they don t have any loyalty to Gateshead For example you know so the way I see it is it s a long term investments that you have to make and you ve got to take a long term view to make these things happen if we can t stay engaged and we look to other spaces we might you know and different North Tyneside we might end up in some Belinda or somewhere like that so we re not absolutely wedded to the site and book we ve been there a long time and we know it wicks you know it s just outside the city center other good transport links that accessible I don t want to become is somewhere that so far out on the edge of some industrial estate somewhere that young people can access most easily Yes really important to me that your people can get that and not necessarily just the kids whose parents are able to drive them around. Yeah I do I also wear wellies when I m plumb doctoring sometimes because I do good in them so I call them my magical musical bunnies so I have been told to wear these wellies when I m climbing doctrine as well and so on a recent birthday of yours you hung out with them tell us about well where were you well my mama lives in Canada now and she is Canadian but she says she s moved back to many many again living in Europe and I was there recently to visit him for his 75th birthday actually and she wanted to surprise me because we hadn t celebrated my birthday together this yet she knows I ve always loved quilts and so she took me to Paul in the back where it s kind of like a Canadian version of a safari park so they have all kinds of wildlife from bison to arctic foxes to raccoons and elk a lot of elk and wolves and bears oh wow so it was an incredible as an experience they they have a pretty huge area so you re not seeing the animals completely behaving like they would in the wild because obviously they ve been aware of and they all around humans but the terrain is a big you know but they re not in cages they re not in kind of like enclosure as so it s pretty fun it was quite a unique experience we stayed in a tepee over night and in the morning at 7 o clock in the morning I was awoken by the wolves howling and so I rushed out and I pretty much slept in my clothes just literally stuck my shoes on and rushed out to go and see the worlds and I had a really beautiful early morning experience no one else was around and in fact before I even saw the world s through these baby bands playing oh oh that was just absolutely amazing seeing these 2 that were babies that was rolling around in wrestling each other I mean that just sounds like the perfect birthday to me baby bass Oh I just love animals I m such an animal lover I mean I still kind of get over these dogs against Bracks if I keep looking at the photos go no look at the little puppy dog.
