Head bowed his his face sort of leaning against his chin he didn t move a muscle the only time there was a reaction or double sort of reaction in the courthouse was when then the prosecution said they were I mean immediately they said they would be going for a retrial and then there were gasps from the public gallery and suddenly Bill Cosby s lawyers there was there was a bit of activity there so that was the only sort of thing that surprised people of the prosecution so quickly said that they were going to go for a retrial so he has not been acquitted but also they couldn t decide unanimously to convict him and so for now at least Bill Cosby is a free man and when you say that the jury was deadlocked hopelessly deadlocked do we know. How many people. How we divided down the line. No we mean there s no there s no indication there s no way here the judges can say Well Ok we ll go for a majority verdict Instead there was no mention in the court it may come out in in the coming days because the jury s not barred from speaking to the press although they all rushed off home it was a very long very long way from home this jury was brought from 6 hours down the road in Pittsburgh and they ve been in court for for 2 weeks actually they only heard 36 hours of evidence and they deliberated for another 52 hours so they ve been away for for a while from the family so they they shut off very quickly without speaking to the media so we don t know what happened there but a lot of people outside a lot of the accused. Bill Cosby. Outside looking very dejected some visibly upset so even though you know we re saying it s a it s a mistrial he was neither acquitted or found guilty it was very clear outside how people were viewing it because those supporters of Bill Cosby were celebrating they were chanting they were cheering when he came out of court and he waved to them and he was smiling those many many accusers and there were nearly 60 of them in the end you know some of them were outside as I say very upset so what happens now. Well the prosecution get together and they think about a case they think about what evidence they can present and they are going to they say file a motion for a retrial now you have to remember in this case I said there was 60 women who came forward to say that Bill Cosby over the years drugged them sexually abused them in some cases raped them but only one case went to trial because of rules here in the States about this type of case that say if it happened before a certain number of years ago then it can t go to trial and a lot of these cases happened beyond that time in fact all but one only one of these cases went forward and Bill Cosby in self didn t take the stand during this case the focus of his defense team was to sort of attack the credibility of his accuser and you know say why did she keep in touch with Bill Cosby after this alleged incident if it was so bad. That in a sense worked for the defense team because we ve seen him walk free today the accuser. Who will be part of the prosecution case again in a retrial what was her reaction in court. Well she was certainly and members of her family was certainly upset a couple of days ago when we heard for the 1st time that the jury was deadlocked as I say this time around it felt that. You know this result was coming but it was all of those women who accused Bill Cosby of assaulting them that were really banking on this this verdict in this case and what is going to be interesting is to see what happens next because yes nearly 60 women came forward but there will be many many more who didn t apparently according to some of those women who came forward because you know some of them a grandmothers now some of them don t want to be in the spotlight for this kind of thing so many of them don t want to talk about it so is the fact that they have now seen Bill Cosby walk from walk out of court a free man is going to make them angry and come forward or are they going to look at this case and look at the way that the accuser Andrea constant was was treated in this case and undermined in terms of our credibility in this case and think well I don t want that to happen to me it s going to be interesting to see but you know a lot of women s rights groups. A saying you know here we go again it s already incredibly difficult to get people man accused of rape. Put away in prison in this country it is a tiny percentage of men who get taken to court who end up going to prison because of these rules partly that the jury has to be absolutely unanimous and now we have a high profile case where you know at least the discussions were opened again that people did start to come forward and now perhaps those those women who have been assaulted to happen abused will stay in the shadows it has been very interesting as well to see what has happened in terms of Bill Cosby s reputation through this case and I think whatever happens now that has certainly been tarnished said unsteadily we know that celebrity may have played some kind of role in this because Bill Cosby was the most successful celebrity of his era on television at these what about race did race play any part in this did the the prospect or did race emerges any part of the conversation. Well it certainly was part of the conversation as was his celebrity and you say I mean not only the most prominent African-American of his time but the highest paid actor you know full stop in America that s why my global name you know associated with sort of wholesome family comedy and somebody that you know we all knew growing up people right across the world knew growing up so yes that has taken a massive dent in terms of the race issue it was certainly part of the conversation because he was somebody who did a great deal in terms of taking African-Americans forward in the in the sphere of entertainment certainly And beyond that and was seen as a role model a father figure actually not just for African-Americans but especially so but but right across America and a lot of his accusers were white women and so it did play a part but some of his alleged victims were black too and I spoke to some of them who said look in the end rape is rape and Assault is assault and you know one of them told me a woman called Jewel Alice and she said you know she campaigned on the front lines of you know black lives matter and all of that she she believes there isn t equality here and there needs to be but in the end this is about. A very very important issue about you know people who do commit these kinds of crimes being punished for them and certainly there was a racial element to this conversation but both in terms of celebrity and in terms of his prominence as somebody he took forward if you like the African-American cause you know there will be people for whom his reputation is greatly diminished That s the B.B.C. s North American correspondent who actually is one of the last surviving legends of Hollywood s Golden Age live you do have learned. Crime did you know and his position on that is that you know many came out of the trial as well with one of the other women other than the accuser in this case did testify and he pointed out how this individual that testified in this case you know her dates were totally wrong 6 years wrong and she waited 20 years after all everyone else started making me the accusation to come with her accusations those pretty much easy for for her accusation to match up with others. Who were making family accusations. So again all these women were lying essentially Well he he didn t in tell me that. But that s what you get from that kind of a statement no no no no I didn t say that I didn t say I got that from him I don t think he was offering that. He seemed to be just focus on this particular case and he was adamant that Andrea caused it and this case was not being truthful you remember a few years ago when Bill Cosby was going around the black community. Kind of the longer term picture for him is that you have to think after 60 the deliberating if this jury could not reach consensus is another jury going to be able to reach consensus or injuries or is it going to be the same facts that are presented again you know strategies can change certain certain adjustments can be made but these are the same facts we were another jury be able to find unanimity because remember it has to be unanimous all 12 jurors need to agree and I think that s where maybe Mr Cosby can take heart because if the warning able to do it now will they be able to do it in the future but to answer your question is absolutely not not not off the hook by any stretch and even if there was a voodoo range subsequently that didn t go in his favor he could then appeal as well could be correct and then when it you know we then look back and looking back with the last 2 weeks of broad were essentially going to do is reset the clock when this trial this new trial begins and yes if he is acquitted then he will he will walk out of court a free man if he is in fact convicted then the appeals process begins but indeed yes the appeals process will happen but they will not happen until and unless there is a conviction in this new trial it may be some Schaub before this case is maybe some time and you beginning cool. I m presuming that you know booking on the holidays any time soon. You know I may need a. Few hours if not a day after this is all over but yes the last 2 weeks have been very unfair and just finishing up some stories we obviously have some follow up to do some cleanup to do and then I think we ll be back again you know I don t I want to make sure that you know your listeners understand here you know the judge says for months but as with so many things need American judicial system it can often take longer I expect some motions from Mr McMonagle Brian Russell who s coffee s lawyer so we could be looking. To me from your experience of being included in the trial was the outcome of this Miss trial surprising to you here is an interesting question I was just talking about it with a colleague I think if you asked me at the beginning of proceedings 2 weeks ago say this weekend I would have said you know if you had said this is going to be a mistrial a hung jury I would have said no the facts are in some cases contested in some cases there is some inconsistency is on the prosecution then I would know it is it would not surprise me having sat through the 1st week of the trial the way the prosecution really landed some pretty serious jabs as far as witnesses as far as arguments the defense was really on the road and I think that if you have a week ago in the middle of the trial or certainly after the prosecution rested I would it was I would say yes this is a surprise it looked like this was heading to a guilty so I think the short answer is authentic when you ask me but as a week ago right in the thick of the trial I would have said This is guilty I would not expect in this what was the religion includes when the judge declared the mistrial. Well that s interesting because the Unlike to a verdict you sort of see a mistrial coming because the jury s coming back or asking the judge for more clarification deliberations are wearing on you have to remember for a lot of us and certainly for the jury these have been 12 hour days in court so I think there was a little bit of an anti-climax to it because we kind of could know was coming I mean there was a little bit of maybe they finally reached a verdict but but but the odds were pretty good once he called everyone in this morning it was going to be d in this trial so the drama wasn t there that said there was vindication felt on the part of the defense you could see if you could feel it from that side of the room and conversely on the prosecution side it was it was disappointing and emotional I signed confident in the courtroom she was their d cues as well there there was an emotional moment between them and it ended so clearly even though I don t think it was a huge surprise this morning I think it was still quite emotional for them and when you say an emotional moment was that. You know I don t know if it was exactly tears but there was certainly a lot of very. Intense I would say embracing a real sense of camaraderie and I will say really Bernard who is again not a complaining in this case but it is a very high profile accuser she was on the cars the show she made allegations against Bill Cosby I saw her walking out of the courthouse completely days stunned to tears in arise this is someone who has been very loquacious throughout the proceedings and she couldn t even get a word out so certainly a tearful tearful reaction from her was a reaction from due course. You know who can think mostly stoic doesn t doesn t work you know out in court he seemed to obviously to be cleped it wasn t a simple exuberant reaction after the proceedings were. Dismissed he stood outside of his team and the spokesman just stared silently as they read statements each only thing satisfies but I would not say there is an excess of oil in Spanish that we can avoid the fact that there has been talk of his celebrity within this case Geez thing is States s is one of those America s highest paid celebrity had any kind of impact on the case. Well you telling them in fact I think on some of the alleged victims and particularly the one in question here she knew we was that. Her to him or him to her and I think when you when you listen to her testimony she clearly said that the fact that he was as you say this kind of trusted sitcom dad I think since there dynamics were truly It s only things that influence events as far as what happened in the courtroom you know again and this morning the jury room and of course none of us are and maybe at some point it will speed we don t know where the holdouts are simply looking at the facts of the case and saying there s reasonable doubt here no matter who it is we are we re we believe that there s reasonable doubt and that s why they weren t voting to convict possibly certainly that was their mandate were any in fact on the other hand taking into account his celebrity and their their you know kind of the ration if they have that for him it s possible people are human we don t know that that s not what they re supposed to be doing but if it in fact influence people I think when a jury speaks out we will find out but as of right now I would say the Dot him to change what was happening in the courtroom just the events that led up to. This particular juice and example would you say. Bill Cosby s reputation as the all american dad has had all this trial has this trial had on that. Well you know it s interesting that I think standing outside the courtroom his spokesman said that some of asked him or some other question and it s a good one and he said the spokesman said and I m paraphrasing here but some of the effect of his legacy has been restored I don t think that s true 1st of all I m not even sure an acquittal would have done that I think the court of public opinion is very much convicted Bill Cosby and I think the thing to refer to is this is not an acquittal this is news for all this is 12 people can agree so I don t think it has a huge effect in that regard the trial is as you point out the last 2 weeks to sort of drag it into the public hide some things that maybe people weren t or didn t want to think about Absolutely and in turn did that tarnish his reputation I think it did but I think a lot of people who don t like Bill Cosby already convinced of his guilt I don t think this trial it may have been bold and then it may have inflamed them but I don t think it really changed opinion to that extent we can also enjoy the fact that this has got a wider context the way that this kind of trial of sexual assaults and cases like these treated not just in America in many countries around the world with other lessons to be learned. Consequence in a wider context. They re only this something that some of the prosecution and in a few instances can still talking about that and some of the questions he was getting that the hope is that they were you can whether it s still there and it s and you know it s not as easy as it once was to sweep these crimes under the rug because there has been a culture of concealment around there so I think they re now regarded will change things like that there is not a conviction that would make people less willing to come forward I mean certainly it s not easy in a case where there is alleged sexual assault for the victim to step forward and so maybe looking at this case someone might say well this is anger a concern went through a lot I don t know if I want to go through that so it may have a chilling effect in her regard we ll have to see. But I think the fact that she was willing to stand up does will inspire some people do think. Reports of the l.a. So many women have accused this mob of assault and the jury still can t seem to reach a budget. So it is I mean it s a it s a very dull day I think right survivors and it s it is a very very shocking outcome I don t think many people expect. This does Newsweek apportion blame stamp if you like the debacle of the trunk. It s not up to us really to to push and blame and I think it was nation as well that the judge that the jury had made a very brave and sort of remarkable decision I think. In saying that they can make a decision because I suppose maybe he was saying they could have easily just so just come up with a verdict but it sort of starts like convictions and there is a full and I saw again refused to be swayed. I think with any of these historic great trials it is difficult to reach of that with Bill Cosby it s sort of under fire because the fact that he s a celebrity is well. But as I said I think given the sheer scale of women who come out and accuse most of this it is surprising but then it s also worth remembering of clothes that the jury isn t really expected to think about it other than that it was very much the case with Andrea and not about her case they reach that sort of hung that are so your solution to the truth and she didn t see us Presidential elections are going to show my son had been in office 6 bob. Actually lost about 300 or so years ago by Hawaiians and by Polynesians in general we have our NASA navigator and I know of Thompson who s the president of our organization and he spent most of his lifetime learning how to navigate from a very famous Micronesian navigator we had to go outside of our culture to really learn it and so and I know it Thompson is the 1st Hawaiian to navigate only by the stars for the 1st time in over 300 years quite a feat was it plain sailing the whole journey. No certainly not you know why is known for its rough waters so we get a lot of practice sailing sailing out locally our Indian Ocean on the way down to South Africa it s quite a challenge or it s quite large waves and. Trophy the only time that they will play whether that means we re going to see a start in cricketing relations between 2 countries as you can hear now Dot and if we look at the history of this match it has been so important as a diplomatic tool. Hearted option and try my hand at some of the techniques the hard doctors use to unclog blocked arteries leeches scientists for 5. The reason we re talking about Hearts is that last week we went along to the British cardiovascular society or b.c.s. Clearly these people push themselves to their limits on a regular basis and exercise probably $10.00 to $15.00 times more than the current recommendations and by doing so they do develop a constellation of changes within the heart that we sometimes call the athlete s heart now specifically this involves a 10 to 20 percent increase in the thickness of the heart muscle and around 10 percent increase in the cavities of the Heart The Heart relaxes much much more briskly than a normal heart and contracts more avidly than a normal heart during exercise and these people because their hearts are very very big they have quite a slow heart rate at rest because the heart doesn t have to do very much to pump 5 liters of blood around the body I m glad that s true because I ve heard that quite a bit and I ve always wondered whether or not it s like a meth but as an athlete you do generally have a bigger more powerful heart Oh yes you have to think about the fact that whilst we re sitting down here we are pumping 5 liters of blood around the body now when someone exercises that goes up to between 25 to 30 liters of blood around the body and that s Ok if you re running for a bus and it s a short dash that s going to take 20 or 30 seconds but when you re actually running for 2 or 3 hours and you ve got to maintain that type of cardiac output the only way you can do that is with the heart growing in size so in that sense the heart really is like any other muscle in your body by training a particular muscle it grows larger and the heart is no different Absolutely so people who train intensively at least 4 hours a week develop some of the changes I ve just been talking about and if they stop training things go back to normal the extreme physical demands the sport professionals place upon themselves can have drastic consequences if their heart isn t working properly though the been a number of recent examples of young athletes and footballers suffering from. Sudden death as a result of an underlying heart problem suddenly these to remain undiagnosed often until it s too late Dr Amanda van of a is a cardiologist at Hammersmith Hospital in London so about 1300 the population will harbor an inherited cardiac condition or so called sudden death syndrome these can be structural problems of the heart where the heart muscle thickens or the heart and large is or electrical problems of the heart where the heart structurally normal and the electricity becomes abnormal under certain conditions particularly And what s an exercise that s quite hard one in 300 well many of these conditions an individual can live with until they re well into the ninety s in all to even discover it nor indeed get significant symptoms but certain individuals will be at risk with or without exercise high risk individuals and as a cardiologist we see individuals that we make this diagnosis in and assess whether they re at high risk or not and counsel them and treat them appropriately however an individual who harbors one of these conditions will increase their risk of sudden death by up to 3 or 4 fold by competitive sports and that sea issue that we re dealing with here do they come and see you or is there a sort of framework for people who are sports professionals because there is that one in 300 risk are they referred to just for screening so individuals come through various mechanisms one of course is if they have symptoms the 2nd is if they have family history certain sports disciplines screen their sportsman particularly in football where the f.a.a. For instance has been leaders in this field perhaps because they do attract more money and therefore have the resources to offer it but they certainly are the standard bearers for screening and by doing a questionnaire looking at family history and symptoms by doing an e.c.g. An echo we re able to tease out those footballers who harbor one of these conditions they made an interesting point there because you said sports men and football has been very much something that men. Have participated in for a really long time it is there very much later on sports women there is data reassuringly as a woman we have a far less chance of sudden death even with one of these conditions so overall perhaps the risk of sudden death in a female athlete is perhaps up to 10 times less than it is for a male athlete it s markedly reduced you know why I think that men adapt to exercise in different ways both structurally and electrically there are certain groups of men and certain ethnicities that for various genetic reasons will be at greater risk with a given condition it is also the case that this sudden death occurs in females is generally perhaps for the electrical problems less the structural problems so there are different conditions that affect athletes male or female differently and their risk accordingly what about ethnicity as well because what we re also seeing is you know when you go to the Olympics people often say that this is in fact a trial of a person s genetics really isn t is how genetically they re set up because you always see stereotypically the Ethiopians can t be beaten on the merit and they ve got the perfect sort of genetic and evolutionary history for that they re not terribly good at swimming on the other hand so there s certainly a strong genetic element to what extent is ethnicity also put your risk of these disorders or ethnicity plays a huge role in both the way that the heart adapts in a normal physiological way to the exercise but also according to ethnicity your wrists will change so black athletes and fortune have up to a 5 fold greater risk of sudden death due to these conceal conditions than their white peers and again the exact reason for that is unknown genetic variability is and risk risk markers are probably to play a man developer before her Sanjay Sharma and we ll hear more from Sanjay a later in the show when we look at the benefits that modest exercise can bring now as Amanda just mentioned people will be referred to her to check with their heart is working properly and one of the tools available to doctors to see the heart. Model just from my point of view looking at the machine it kind of looks like I m about to go in for a baby Sky So is it the the same kind of thing correct it s the same machine and with just a different software and different transducers that we do on the machine but they look identical and when you say transducer is that sort of like that the bit that you re rubbing around on me yes a the echo private transit we put jelly on them upon your chest sort of signal is that sent out from this probe so they re. Sent out from the transducer and they will bounce back when they hit structures in the body say pending on the stroke so they hit they come back at different times and that s what makes up the image on the screen say when they receive back in the transducer fantastic show you get crack and you. Say what we need to get on to the couch I need to lie on your left side but what that does is bring your heart close to the front of your chest so there s less distance travel so it should reduce that image on the screen . It s quite comfy actually. That isn t very good there so you know we can see I think 2 chambers there and there s a valve sort of between them that is opening and closing with my heartbeat Ok so then the left hand side of the screen you see the 2 walls in the left ventricle the main floppy thing in the middle is the mark and then to the right hand side of the screen you can see the left a chimp so blood comes back from the lungs into the left down the Pommery veins having picked up oxygen as part. Into the main pumping chamber of the left ventricle and then just above the mitral valve you can see 2 leaflets of the I also and then the staff there water so then the oxygenated blood is pumped through the aorta found. That opens a valve comes into trousers and further trousers and that stops the blood from pulling it likes to prevent it from going and conscious and it s amazing think you re actually connected to the jet engine right what are you giving me now this is a life jacket which we wear basically every time we go flying because as well as giving you support of the water it also contains all these survival as well such as a beacon to look at you there s flares there s heliograph mirror thirsted kits water so quite a lot of carrying around with you Ok and I m not fit to fly. Almost as a helmet to go on yet you ve got the helmet and and some gloves of course I can t accomplish if you take to the air without without my gloves just get the helmet on Ok so the actual mask on you won t be able to speak now but still be able to breathe and you ve got far easier as well that you can put down that we fly with all the time in case we get bird strike through the front of the aircraft and also gives you protection against as soon as one. Now Nic why am I wearing all of this exposure to high g. Force runs a risk for parts of loss of consciousness which we call g. Lock or g. In juice loss of consciousness that s really because of the effect that the g. Force has on your blood under increased g. The weight of your blood is effectively increased and as it gets heavier it has a couple of effects one of them is to cause the blood to pool in the lower limbs and the other is to reduce the amount of blood pressure at head level basically anything above heart level we see a reduction in blood pressure and anything below heart level we see an increase in blood pressure due to the increased hydrostatic gradient caused by the g. Force so as the G. s make the blood heavier and and effectively fling the blood into my legs there s less blood coming back up to my heart so my heart s got less to pump out into my head and it s facing a bigger up would struggle to get it into my brain so my brain basically suffers a lack of oxygen for awhile Exactly and it s all about actually the delivery of oxygen to the brain so we re not that interested in the blood pressure by itself what we re really interested in is the flow of blood carrying that vital oxygen to keep you conscious and round about 4 seconds after the auction delivery is stopped you lose consciousness and I guess you flown some of the most powerful aircraft that the r.f.
