Cell thank you for that and thank you to the people of Skegness who lifted her and sorted her out job and water level and Hampshire says I want to thank my 3 daughters for doing extraordinarily an education brilliant My next door neighbor Ted and you owe the presenter for your lovely giggles on this Thanksgiving day old Javid thank you very much for the next I ve passed you thanks on well a proper well and truly rather thank you for the text one triple 3 Start your message with the word job Yes Who would you like to thank on this Thanksgiving let me know tonight now I ve got a rather special guest on the show oh by the way it s just gone quarter past 8 if you need to be somewhere but I would say to you the only place you need to be here because this next guest is someone who spent an entire year away from the planet astronaut Scott Kelly is the longest serving American in space and not content with just a space suit oh no you might also seen him chasing to Pete Ramey I assess in a gorilla suit you remember that he was the guy under the fur Well he s back now and he s been busy writing about his experiences and I asked him what that big countdown is like the countdown to chasing Jim people. Talking about the more serious countdown the more serious countdown. Well you know you have committed to it you ve thought about it you recognize that it s a risky thing to be doing but you know by the time you get up to the launch pad you put all those thoughts behind you and then it s you know it s time for business time to focus on the job that you have to do whether that whatever that job is. And mine had been different from the number of occasions having flown twice in the. In the space shuttle and twice in the Soyuz. But yeah it s probably the most serious moment of your life Goodness me and you say that it s one of the stupid things that you ve done. Well when you consider their risk you know you joke about when you do risky things how stupid it was really so I do and you know flying in space is very risky so I make those same kind of jokes but they re kind of in jest you know I ve never like I ve regretted flying in space or thought it was so risky I shouldn t have done it but I do joke about the risk that way in terms of knowing that it s a year that you won t actually be. How do you write that down because the prospects of that must be quite daunting Yeah it is daunting Fortunately for me I had spent a 6 month period in space before 4 years prior so I knew what I was getting into and I knew what I needed I knew what I needed to do to get to the end you know be energized and you know feeling like I did on the last day and the 1st day or vice versa. And I think I did a good job at that so I think my previous experience helped me get through this mission with as much positive energy and optimism as I could and you say you and your book you know you and say you re in space a life time of discovery what have you discovered Yeah. Well I think I ve discovered a lot. You know for a wide different range of. Ideas but the biggest thing I learned and I only have so much time so I ll go to the more important stuff that I learned. You know I learned we have to take care of this planet you know it has a very fragile atmosphere there are things we do to it that we shouldn t be doing. As in warming the planet and I think that can be reduced with action. You see of the atmosphere and how it looks like a contact lens on an eyeball you see certain parts of the world that are almost always covered in pollution you get a unique perspective. Yeah you know some astronauts are if you refer to this as the orbital perspective and. You know it also when you look at Earth from over a long period of time which is incredibly beautiful and very inviting looking in general very blue. And you look at countries as they were meant to appear not with any kind of political borders between them especially as you see them during the day it makes you you know think that the people on the planet are all just one team you know and they should be working better together as a team to get their problems solved work together to help one another you definitely have that feeling after spending a long time in space here s the thing you have a an identical twin and you were both being studied as part of this when you as to how your lives changed and what sort of transponder twin on earth and you in space . One of the major result was that in space I became much more handsome and smarter. Brother Mark. Said the most important of all have you told him is he aware of this facts go he was very disappointed. It s better than any facial cream then. Going to have a slow. Map to even get a boat docks they didn t actually measure you didn t they d see he was growing fast do you get any of those results. Well you know that s kind of like urban myth you know I I stretched a little bit in space. I didn t grow you just got more handsome. Very much so. How do you deal with missing home because you know that moment that most of the moments when you it I would freak out but then again I m not trying but the thought of being in the you know just floating it s terrifying sculpts you know well not for me. But you know I think it could be for some people and I think eventually when we have you know more regular access to space with General you know average people or you want to refer to him I think you re going to need an experience that meets a broad range of abilities and expectations and certainly living on the space station could freak people out I mean just the stuff you have to do to survive up there is. Stuff I think a lot of people would want not want to do on their vacation like was. Taking care of the toilet how how the toilet works how it. The effort required to use it. You know the fact that when you do something like brush your teeth as simple as brush your teeth you have to decide what to do with the toothpaste spitting it out. You know when everything floats is in a really great option you know you don t have a sink to spit in and seeing any to spit it into a tissue or swallow it which I did which is not recommended but for me that always seemed like the easier thing to do many of us why oh so handsome it s a toothpaste solo you have a make sure sure any kids out here realize we re just kidding we are. Not swallow your toothpaste it is not good for you it can make you sick don t do it but what about you social time is there any social climate can you do when you are trapped or you have some times to spend you have some time spent together on the weekends a little bit you know we d hang out meet and watch a movie or something then. Most of the time you re working really busy. To try and experiments or fixing things. And when you go bunk have you got any plans for the mission I have been invited Oh I ll be waiting check my mail every day. Well listen it s been great to see you thank you thank you so much for coming on the show so I don t carry endearments a year in space a lifetime of discovery and he s handsome he s much more handsome he s a problem and. Student was. A much. Running. Over to. God Mary. Was not so sweet. So I d say my self but. Never going to. See. That yes. To to to change. And then the staying just to see the one of the men something. To change in. This nation to see it s going to have to be a different man. A change. His. Fabulous. Changes You re listening to right across b.b.c. Local radio in England and. Tonight we re talking about mystery letters that end up through your door just to read from Camden in London has been getting a thank you letter from the same person for 3 years Jessica when did this I say 3 years but was a Christmas time or well yeah they let it come 3 I guess just after Christmas and has done to address to the same people and signed it s written by someone and little and the child are sort of torn on it and this year they put their fingerprints are different so can you remember what the 1st letter said if you still got the 1st letter I feel really bad about it sort of try to find them because I happened to get the letters right but they were to their trust to Alex Irene and I find I looked like a kook happy Oh really so. These people clearly must have lived in your house before you know ages I think just the people who are sending the letter have of the got to be the sub that the friends trust written down wrong in their trust but. That was why I tried to find it so I originally put it on Facebook and you have to say there s any as anybody ever heard of these people. And that was picked up by a friend. And then it went on to be to see website and an Evening Standard website I think that so no one ever came forward who were called those names saying oh well . This is a total mystery is yeah but I think maybe not the rest will come discuss with it and.
