News. The U.S. Federal Reserve which looks after such things raised a key interest rate yesterday by a quarter of one percent bringing it to somewhere between one half and 1.75 percent it s the latest in a series of moves that began on the Jerome poll the new chairman Priebus S. And vessel Janet Yellen and it s the 6th move since December 25th seen all of programmed quarter of one percent it s reckoned that Mr powerless still planning for 3 more rate rises and 2018 but there could be more David Sicilia as Henry Kaufman Tim of financial history an associate professor at the University of Maryland he s currently working on a financial history of the United States Hello Professor Sylvia are you well thank you for for being with us. I suppose you know a quarter percent interest rate rises so gentle that the everybody even the market just seem to yawn. Is this a harbinger of something more. Well 1st of all the Fed typically likes to move in small increments so. 50 basis points. Is actually an unusual and the Fed is needing to move very cautiously right now because 30 percent number of on certain things so the fundamentals of the economy seem to be sound and of course the trumpet ministration is. Injecting a lot of stimulus into the economy about $300000000000.00 of spending the tax cut by most estimates is going to inject another trillion and a half dollars over the next few years. So there least for a couple years. The economy should be performing at a pretty robust level critical and aggression and. May I ask you to hold on the irrational and I do beg your pardon that s that s the joy of a situation here but I d like to return if I may to a fairly historic scene which is playing out at the moment in New Zealand Kevin Hauser s back on the line again. Yeah I m not sure we re using the word joy here at the moment England 27 for 9 it s an Anderson pair Stuart Broad the latest to be dismissed now to an outstanding stunning catch in the gully by Kane Williamson so broad without scoring you talk of World Records the lowest score in Test cricket and New Zealand themselves out this ground and all for a long time ago 26 so still at this stage England could become with this school the 2nd lowest ever school in Test cricket their own previous record is 45 back in 887 and just want to point out I wasn t there on that occasion Simon able to talk about the conditions as to why that might have been However at that stage. Say England really in all sorts of trouble and the record books are being rewritten as we speak but England with bold by the way 5 for 13 South the full 14 England up to 16 overs 27 for 9. Kevin thank you very much indeed and we ll be back with Kevin I have a pretty good idea back now to the professor David Sicilia talking about the condition really of the American economy and therefore I suppose of all economies but basically saying that even as as Professor Professor President Trump has injected the huge stimulus in the economy with his tax cut there is a question What is that question well there s a couple of questions one is. What happens if we can think of these injections as sort of a sugar high that s going to last a couple of years and then the question is what happens after that because economic performance is typically linked to things like productivity and we have to look at those more fundamental measures so is this going to be a real solid sustained growth in the other question of course is Mr Trump declaration about tariffs you know if he starts a tariff or most economists think that that could have a very detrimental effect on the U.S. Economy and others. So at the moment Jay Powell is following Janet Yellen script quite closely is that is that fair to say that this this was something that began on those previous. I think it is fair to say taking a historical perspective on this what we re saying here is a is a slow reversal of a very long trend if we go back to the end of the 2nd World War we see interest rates and bond rates rising slowly and steadily move from way down sort of 3 percent level up to as high as 14 percent by the 1980 S. And then a slow decline that. Went down to the point where in the immediate years after the 2008 financial crisis the rates were effectively it 0 I mean the in fact the Japanese central bank was essentially paying people to borrow money and so now we re starting to come out of that long secular shift and probably will continue for a number of years to slowly raise rates but of course that depends on whether the economy if the economy starts to get and pretty serious trouble in the next several years that that would change. That would change and depends on on whether there are any sharks along the way Professor craftsman Professor Cecilia very grateful to you as you are as you hear we ve got a bit of a sporting. Event going on at the moment which is giving some people real pause for thought so we re going to we re going to leave you and return if we will to New Zealand and in Auckland when last heard of England were $28.00 for 9 heading for a historic. Historic low score in the 1st inning of any test so we re going to join Test Match Special for the final few glory moments bits of England settings and here s Jonathan it will do it by any movement particularly from ball in the air. Ball swings around it s always where again he bowls to Overton who hammers him over 30 quid wicket useful runs these are supposed to at least in terms of avoiding the. Absolute. No idea of 45 go try and beat that with a good 39 for 9. And over to 16 and this will be on strike it s still possible and well and take a deep breath and go next door but a lot of what is lovely to see Brian looking so cheerful after all these years. Overton what he says gets breaks to 16 he s played as a pressure of the innings and slightly premeditating actually short he stood tall and he stomped it through to make it. Seem he speaks of people will do as he s an adult in the spirit they re the only person out there who he won t be big smiles but James gets misty thinking what Bush will actually made the right decision here his Southie a 39 for 9 balls to Anderson shortness and just drops his gloves then lets that go by the all stump and is taken by. Whatley learning that at nicht everything Mr Everything is in the court everything. Is 39 for 9 Danny Hamilton you know that there was some talk. That they were seeing the ball case the white back a little bit and that there is. A little bit of confirmation of that no possibly. There is Southie looking to finish it off goes in and bowls to Anderson Anderson clips Either way through back or square leg for one and just jokes really could have pushed it to bolt it in action sending it back to the keeper Whatley and it went up to 48 for 95 live with us now I welcome 4519. Which is actually quite a recovery but where this is the better 7 for nice that early innings and put on 13 the last wicket a basically to. Get back in the game when the gaming will have to can have to effect me from here when bun in example if you think about it if you win the rest of the match by innings. Because this is no innings at all 40 for 9 overs in 16 is playing a few shots so I think both are overturned because what my state places back the ball is a roar from there I thought that was a return catch but I m pretty sure he played this into the pitch indeed he did it was more sad he was struck by the ball or most. Open on 16 got his chance because well presumably because stocks is not considered fully fit to be the full Sima. Came in at number 5 route up to number 3 rejecting and batting order has been calamitous. Southie into ball to override the crease and I would just be that groping for that one I saw the all star was taken by what link. Just waiting for the endings to end. The card fascination whether it s going to be England s lowest ever Test match score they need 5 to equal it. At one stage that 20 minutes ago it actually nailed on it was going to being his lowest score at 5 ducks route Stokes best broad. Statement made 11 and I was in 16 any place to reach double figures. So I think goes in balls to overturn and I ve written plays that firmly back to the bowler who picks up the snow right into the leading edge and that he is looking to flick that through midwicket. Could ve gone anywhere. Kane Williamson putting them into bat on the A blue skies or a warm afternoon in Oakland and a few people thought it was a slightly strange decision. But. They re really quite good and the 2 hours later 459. Is in a boaster I would turn to his sis but toss the bowler through mid August gone before short straight batteries here it wasn t perfectly hit but it was it was done well enough it bubbled up tools along on by injury solid blow from Overton takes him to 26 the quickest outfield here across all there was quite thick rugby ground of course I have played rugby here this season already. It s a good show it s a length boards hit through the line at this great tension in the under such. As this we are going almost out of jail to where one of the 5 ducks in a nice wind equals England s record. Is 4 teams that have had 6 ducks an inning innings and the 4th time England had 5 ducks and. The ball is continuing $5.00 to $25.00 and goes in to bowl to Anderson and ends and. That might come off the pad goes away to his right hand side is that by going to be signaled Yes it is that s a good result for him and really no way Britain has played so far 20 of 16 balls and England are level now with their lowest score $45.00 for 9 it looked inevitable then the route recalled that lowest ever score in Test cricket but they avoided that could be their joint lowest. With a wooden strike 3 slips ago is a deep cover now. It all has a bit deep as well and mid-off is a fine leg and a deep square I ve been playing some shots a ball rolls around the work I was in stretches for plays it back up the other side of the pitch ball comes across to pick up as my right I saw Wagner doing some nice thing up exercises in side his previous aver which suggests that a change is about to be made in his 10th thorough but as I say his bold 9 and they get him to the limit even though your running through a side like that comes a point possibly where you do make a change at a fresh bowl of course right now is no slouch. As a whole of Test wickets bowled short this wasn t aware of the bindery. 6 it was were like to be. Swatted away by overturned and England have avoided their lowest ever test score I know it s a brings up of 50 there are 51 for now I ask there s a cheer from English supporters are here quite a few as well and over to it more than half of them takes it to $26.00 it s 3 shots he s been caver on the wicket he s abandoned the boulder bats and Overton. Bent his knees it has swatted it in front of square a long way for 6. Volt goes into balls to it and he pokes out into the on side gets a single big gap at midwicket. Collected by revile. One more the total speech revealing the game revalue the oh no you. Have to go out and face the music although it might be a bit. More pleasant when he goes out to bat 50 odd runs on the board I mean there has been movement for bolt. But nothing unconventional beautiful left on swing at the start and snow strike. Puts them out there and guys in a way towards Nichols s fielding at backward point and there is no run in his 50 level so where did the. The shortest 1st innings but. 18.30 was a strain and bridge so there were did that one as well without trying to get blood and years old Andrew Through the Looking Glass it s only really the 64 that s the left. Turns looking for 6 cricket into ball to and this is down the leg side just a flick it away is an interesting behind and they call it over they call is over but they could review that is very effective Left Review I hear exactly a good one wicket down 2 views left that. They re not good and then pass called over can you still review I would thought so. But so he was he was quick to call it was made the Empire I think it I think you pressed. With it Mr Charles for. So overt is 2727 of 19 B. This is a question for Andrew it is the highest percentage of runs in an innings and number 9 is of a school. Look they were not cut and they were 50 percent 52 for $90.00 to the $27.00 strike. And here say they continue to go to try to force their way off the back foot into the offside his it hard into the surface bubbles away and say I think shots across to pick up and there s no run but hasn t really been a 4 for 19 day from scientists today. Just I think the most extension dismissal I think is the most astonishing dismissal he missed of what was a straight forward toss the slowest toss was he was here when near as well he was trying to bowl a slower ball and ended up as a sort of not a yorker because it hit the base stumps and it looked like Mo and just didn t pick it up. And the same applied action route. So I think to overturn it I was in plays nicely initially going back and coming forward playing defensive back up the pitch as picked up by citing as follow through there s no rub it applied to Stokes was all over the place. He wasn t beaten by a bald lute significant because later if he didn t. Is a possibility. It was raised how it s improbable to say when he was raised in Hamilton they would see it right well with. Their plate only one match with the pink ball that today game their side the ball is short that s he. Back a square leg that s gone before as well one banks to fail is that that he hit it between them perfectly Overton takes him to $31.00 I think into $56.00 for $95.00 plays out for naught people switching on the whole time barely believe it route Stokes best early brought a light from the old stable door left him saying some late resistance mainly from a written a civic polls a record for the highest percentage of score by number 957.25 you have treated us very good that very quick very quick as well OTOH got 31 out of 56 ball the try to swing that away misses it and it s true to what link but we ll see whether intelligent but thank you but we re always so 146 out of 255 against England at The Oval 967 of them are you know I hate to admit this I can remember that up going. Well he s got $31.56 and the way things are going he s scored the run than this and it s just going to hold and if he keeps going for 20 minutes half an hour then every chance he will. Hit that record highest percentage of runs scored an innings now the Phil is on the ball defensive side he bowls the best forced away by over to 3 backward point more run time towards the boundary and just in the case of the outfield is not lightning fast here it s picked up inside the rose but a sloppy fielding down there. By had Nichols eventually gets the return in your place for that to go before. A recent comes back for. 2 more takes him to 30 story building and to $58.00 tonight it s also just the 4th time in Test cricket that the team took a partnership of more than double the score. 27 from an up to. The we know 58 highest percentage won and it into partnership was a full years in Austin I go back and 2013 a Trent Bridge 58.2 percent will remember that one well the polls a short ball and I would have played pretty well dropping the wrists open the gloves allowing it to go past his chest with head back and rocking back through to what playing and that s the end of the I was uneasy when I got the chance to Paul Anderson who s on one day wouldn t 33 for 25 balls by a few shots that come off as well as place of excellent ones. At the $58.00 for 9 Graeme Swann is here Simon there at. Our clan than my goodness me I her Roy 9th wicket stand there for over 10 and we ll we ll continue to keep you updated but the statisticians are making hay at the moment it s half past 2 images a lot of noise smartphones and tablets this is B.B.C. 5 Live The news comes from Allison Hughes the pilot of a vintage plane which crashed onto a road during the Shoreham eschewing 2015 killing 11 people will be charged with manslaughter by gross negligence Andrew Hill is Gene in front of magistrates next month Facebook s founder has admitted it made mistakes over the handling of users data Mark Zuckerberg has been speaking for the 1st time since Cambridge analysts It was accused of mining information to influence the 2016 U.S. Election. Well all I can say is we re going to talk to Kevin how and I don t need to say this with the usual doom laden fearful voice because they re all I turned that say end of the 1st innings for England so where Kevin were you got to say and you were there. But I beg your pardon we re actually going to talk to Carol in a minute so my my sincere apologies to Dan Collins who is in Lima to tell us about the resignation of the president of Peru Petro. Who has resigned after a video was released which attempts what seems to implicate him in corruption than Collins joins us now from Lima Peru Hello Dan hello wrote yes you could be here to thank you for your relations is this is this a vote rigging scandal is that the essence of it. Well this is really just the latest corruption scandal which is kind of tipped tipped. Over the Edge he was already being investigated. For his allegedly corrupt links to the Brazilian construction firm out of Britain and that. Sent that firm is at the center of the biggest corruption scandal U.S. In America it s now been revealed that the company handed out more than $800000000.00 in bribes across 12 nations in the region and Peru was a recipient of those prizes as well at a time when Kaczynski was a minister of state a prime minister and Economy Minister around 10 years ago and he is being investigated because at the time he was a minister a company of which he was received which he was the part owner and shareholder was receiving state contracts from Brecht and so clearly that he s being investigated there for what many people believe is a conflict of interest but what there is also the fact that he is being persecuted a little by the political opposition have a majority in Congress he s in the minority his party is in the minority he s being bullied and pushed around a fair bit by the opposition party and it has to be said that all the major political players in Peru at the moment are also being investigated with relation to Brett this Brazilian construction firm but that what emerged on Tuesday were some videos which had been released by the opposition party which appeared to show . The president trying to offer kickbacks or public works to Congress people in return for voting against a previous into PIETSCHMANN attempts. Against Christians here or in fact to say he s been it that they try to impeach him before he narrowly escaped impeachment he was is due to he was due to face an impeachment process. On Thursday today but he has now of course resigned ahead of what was likely to be a likely impeachment in Congress so it s a little bit convoluted but there you have it he s being forced effectively to resign or facing each went right yes not the 1st president to anywhere to reside before he had an impeachment hearing is is he liable to prosecution as is he going to have to defend himself. Well this will be decided in a few hours in Congress in Peru where some congresspeople want to go ahead with the impeachment in which case he could face indeed prosecution and others want to accept the resignation so we don t know exactly what will happen yet but clearly if the resignations accepted then he could expect he could escape prosecution an investigation is continuing into these alleged. Corruption I linked to when he was a minister of state some 10 years ago but this is part of a bigger story really which it in which he has. Tried to negotiate with but it looks as issue which is being led by Keiko which Maurice the daughter of Alberta Fujimori who is there a former private president of Peru who was jailed for 25 years for corruption he rights abuses now Kaczynski actually pardons could fit you more on Christmas Eve and move which is very controversial in the country and a move which would I think was intended to appease the opposition but it didn t seem to do that and the opposition still led by for Timorese doorstep it splits between 2 of the more his children came chief which he Mori and Kaikohe who s the main leader of the opposition party still the main opposition party is still going for good trying trying to get Kaczynski out of office effectively and it appears that with these latest scandal they would have achieved that they have asserted Absolutely and that has caused because it made any. Constructive contribution to his country during the time that he has actually been president. Well he s a 79 year old man he s considered to be one of the global technocratic elites and he s been a he s very well educated has been to Oxford and Princeton he was an economist with the World Bank he s been a minister of state he is also a banker so he was expected to be able to contribute a lot to to the developments of the country there were high hopes when he took office but there was this problem that he didn t have a majority in Congress and he answered it was likely that he was going to be pushed around some and and so if actively he s been defending himself for pretty much the 20 months in which he s been in office and has not really achieved what he set out to do and that has been a bit of a disappointment to provings which hasn t made in particular popular it s equally popular and he does say when he offered his resignation on Wednesday that he didn t want to be an obstacle to our nation fight in the unity and home as he harmony that it s and it needs and so what will happen now is that his vice president Martin Vickery who s actually the ambassador of Peru in Canada is heading back to Peru and he s expected to assume the be sworn in as the new president of the country for the remaining more than 3 years of this mandate and and that will happen before the weekend. That Thanks so much. Well let s go to Eden Park in Auckland New Zealand the scene of England s washed batting performance of many a long year Kevin Hauser is there along with the T.M.S. Summariser and former England spinner Marks Well Captain. Well I think that s probably I think we ll get there my last fight will be as good as good as we can give you about. Those important uses the fact we ve managed to take an early today that s quite exciting or D.O.D. Iran 58 although 20.4 overs Craig Overton what a hero 33 Craig Overton 6 for 32 Saudi 4 for 25 I think single and 6 the lowest test score at one stage when they were 23 for 8 there was a chance that I should put themselves well and truly in the record books by managing the lowest ever score in Test cricket which was 26 and the next thing we were looking at when they were 2027 for 9 was England s lowest score which was 45 back in 800 something but they managed without a partnership for the last week it s a particular led by Craig evidently skin cells just a little bit of pride no fear can even push it about but. Yeah it has been quite breathtaking for all the wrong reasons what a shame what a shame and does their redoubtable Andrew actually have a statistic for assuming there s 58 you know the worst since I don t know off the top my head you know. I think since you were bowled at 51 didn t Jamaica. In a round about 2004 or 5 no bit late in that 7 or 8 points. But I mean you ve won for the last part of 31 and then our school room would ve overheated completely because there are all sorts of potential recruits it s a lower school too that you can and have ever had to get into. New Zealand they were 60. So. I well I do know he. Was spectacular wasn t so that s what we need to really turn certificate asking about isn t it because some are saying that the voting was sullied and English but it was read somewhere in between is it well I don t think it was unplayable by any stretch of the imagination I thought actually the real danger man was trampled who bolts and brilliant livery. And he was straight and swung a bit of a mist almost as if they couldn t see the ball so he got his wickets in the classic manner he found the outside edge of Cook s bat Stoneman s better left hand and land and then he would have beauty that swung in the air and went. Right through the gate so he got wickets as you d expect an opening bowler of great qualities a very very good bowler Saudi if we re honest got them all sorts of ways cotton bowled best going for a duck a fantastic diving catch in the goalie for another sort of pretty innocuous delivery so it was sort of his day he got 4 for 20 bolt was the star got the big batsman it early on 632 but what we ll see what happens when England bowls but my suspicions are that you know there will be a lot will run scored it won t be anywhere near as easy for the ball is it was this morning it was sort of lemming like actually there was very little from any of the batsmen when the ball was just a bit they were stuck on the crease and they were like startled rabbits in the sense that perhaps there is something in this that they they find it difficult to pick up the paint ball Monali another bonus with the savvy he was basically bowled a slow full tossed it might have been a slower ball and he missed it and it hit the base of his stumps and he just never picked it up at all he went off like a lot of the others. So so this is cricket however we ve not got anywhere near. You may remember last week we had some well we discovered in the sport for quite strange days in Hamilton in the warm up where England played 22 day games in that they batted for one day than a ball for the next day and I was with a pink ball in the same with a red ball and we didn t really think get about the troubles that had on their 1st day against the pink ball when they performed better in the 2nd game we didn t forget about it but I think perhaps we just didn t talk about is maybe as much as we should learn because they really did. Our goal against the tinkle in the warm up game last week under the lights in Hamilton and there certainly the world rustiness being split spoken about. Just just not what it doesn t seem like it but obviously some could pick it up better and it was not a classic innings but Craig Overton see you picking the ball up pretty well and he actually spared a few blushes when he got his 33 but all the others including the cream of our batting really seemed to struggle to pick it up especially against ball once the ball just moved a fraction in the air and they were stuck on the crease as I say so I mean they ll be a lot of damage they ve got they somehow they got a whole New Zealand that the something. About for under $150.00 to be a massive bonus something around there would be a bonus but then they ve got to go through. The agonies of trying to back again and make sure they do locate the ball perhaps when it s dark it s been absolutely perfect for normal cricket so so many doubts in England dressing the experiment of Route 3 didn t seem to do well and if anyone spots James even smiling in the dressing room they ll be in trouble or James Woods will be in trouble James doubts me he was expected by sums to be given another least 2 more chances in this series but he missed out and Craig Overton was in Milan at 4 routes at 3 so. You know he s not alone so he won t be smiling you have to. Be smiling but he will be thinking of us and part of that lot there we are all up to 58 already goodness me well you 2 just one last thought they had presumably to agree to this pink ball so when it was mooted that there would be a pink ball then they use a pink bow on batting practice. Well they did use a pink ball last night they would have used in the nets they put up a floodlight especially on the number 2 ground just a 100 yards away or so and they did use the pink ball although struggled with it Hamilton when Kevin was watching it for us so they ve had a little bit of practice against the pink ball. But it didn t look like you d see it very well today. And of course you ve got to remember all this is all because of that the struggle to to make sure that Test cricket doesn t get marginalised this is only the 3rd Test in New Zealand for the whole summer there are going to play for so this isn t the tent here to to get more people to come in and watch it to be honest you re looking at here right now it doesn t look as if that s worked as well as I think they might get some letter in the seafood ahead of curiosity because it doesn t look like this match is going to last the 4 days. Tires coming out so it s going to resume but I mean you expect the pink ball that the accepted wisdom is that when it starts to get dusky and dark the pink ball moves around a bit if you don t expect it the bats would be gone all at 58 in beautiful bright sunshine 10 to 4 local time in the afternoon so we can look at that as an excuse every chaps more from you later thank you so much. Well let s let s turn to some testing matters for cockroaches and it s well known that a cockroach can support something immense like 20 times its own weight as rejoin someone or is far more about cockroaches and I do the science writer Bianca Grady Hello Bianca Hello Rod. There is a there is a number isn t there for the you know if we were as strong as cockroaches we would be able to withstand pressures of some extraordinary amount. They are extra are incredible creatures that I mean this is one thing I find fascinating with the insect Well its sex in general is these feats of super power and as you know that if you translated them into a human like the fleas ability to jump will you know the strength of a spider s web or cockroaches caring abilities if you translated those into humans we d all be super bad but we ll see who woman but cockroaches are also famous for their survival abilities and there s long been this could be that just about the only thing that would survive a direct hit from a nuclear weapon would be cockroaches and this actually came about because apparently in the weeks after the destruction of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in World War 2 with nuclear weapons there were reports of cockroaches that could still be seen skittering through the rubble and in fact there was a Myth Busters episode that actually looked at this and I did find that cockroaches do seem to have a remarkable ability to to withstand high doses of radiation but this particular study was trying to understand why cockroaches are so prevalent in urban environments I mean they re everywhere I don t think there is anywhere on earth that you don t find cockroaches and I don t know about and talk to correctly that s probably a question for someone but this study they were looking at the genome of the American cockroach which is a particular pest in Australian environments funnily enough and I love the scientific name for the American cockroach is Perry plenty Amerikana So it s that said the gene is literally translates to around the planet which I think says something about it some its prevalence So when they looked at the genome sequence the genome of this cockroach and I compared it to other cockroaches and also termites which are in the same sort of group and they found 1st of all it has a huge genome so it s the 2nd largest insect genome after the locust and what they also found was the American cockroaches is gifted or has certainly evolved. Extra large doses of genes relating to chemo reception which is you know fancy word for basically the ability to do. Chemicals in the environment around us so and in our in humans that sound our ability to smell and taste and these cockroaches have twice as many smell receptive as other cockroach species and they have the largest number of taste receptive Jayne s ever same in an insect species and in particular they have seem to have a really heightened ability to detect a bitter taste which is often related to talk sense so this is just that firstly the American cockroach is really really good at tracking down 3rd sources it has a very broad palate it can pretty much eat anything as I mean if you think about this you know where they re found in human environment there s probably nothing that a cockroach won t eat but they re also very good at detecting and avoiding potentially toxic stuff and they also have to have extra Jayne s for enzymes that would help to breakdown or overcome the effects of toxins but it doesn t stop there they are quite extraordinary So not only that but they also have a really boosted immune system which means that they have a much better at at fighting off pathogens particularly bacteria that might make them sick and of course when you live in the sort of environments that a cockroach lives in that s going to be a particular advantage and they also have this supercharged ability to regrow bits of themselves so they can they can regenerate lost limbs in certain stages of their life cycle they can restart every generate lost limbs and this this ability is so extraordinary that there s actually now a sense separate research looking into how they doing this and whether it s possible that we might actually be able to harness the particular chemical growth factors that are involved and use them for wound healing in humans so I mean I hate cockroaches there is a huge problem in Sydney s specially his little skittery ones we open a cupboard they all go everywhere but I have a new found admiration for the little things. Goodness goodness theory for how well you know if if we don t harness their abilities Eventually though they ll be harnessing ours in some vague you know obvious way and we ll all be the slaves of of a master race of cockroaches they do so and they say they sound unbeatable really don t think well I think anyone who s ever tried to eradicate them from from a house root would know just how determined and. Yet resilient I guess they are to any kind if it s to eradicate them and I thankfully have never had to be in a house with a you know you have to have a whole house pretty much vacuum sealed and then bond rates or the worst stuff to get rid of them but yet particularly in Sydney these smaller cockroaches are a huge issue certainly where I live up in the mountains we gits much begin native cockroaches and I don t mind those so much because they know they re big and they don t really get into things and I actually do catch them and put them outside but it s the little ones where you know your it s like when you open a box of cereal and they re just everywhere is there a lot makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand up. And why should having a big genome be an advantage. It s just it s greater complexity essentially the it s the greater number of Jane So if you have more genes coding for example to cutting on your abilities to to taste and smell toxins that manes that you have a much more expanded ability to to to to taste and smell toxins so I guess it s contradictory that Evan allergy if it just means that you have a lot more there weapons in the genetic to deal with not only to deal with threats in the environment but also to look for advantages and barmen and adapt to different threats and vantages in that environment. That s clear Well let s talk about beer because more and more people want to brew beer and there s more and more science going into the brewing of beer there is and this question was whether it s possible to brew a hobby B.-A without hops or to brew beer at all without hops and so the hot flour makes what many would consider to be a pretty essential contribution to the flavor of beer it gives of this kind of bitterness and that the Hopi flavor indeed and it s also increasingly difficult to get I mean to get English foggles in the other parts of the world is very difficult people are buying up foggles years and years in advance I don t think I even know what a fire go is it s a. It s a half hour really. Well Beth I ve never heard that term before that s that s great I ve learned something new today so the whole plant which is called humorless nucleus of the problem is pronounced that. Is very important obviously in brewing but it s quite tricky to use it for one thing the levels of the essential always all oils and the molecules that make hops happy they actually can vary enormously from plant to plant so that makes it difficult for Bruce to get a consistent flavor but the whole plant itself which is a very lush greens or vine like plant is a very thirsty crop and so apparently use something like 100000000000 liters of water every year to irrigate hops but what if we could actually genetically engineer brewer s yeast to produce some of the compounds that actually give the hops a particular flavor and says scientists have actually managed to do this they ve looked at a couple of essential oils that are give off I guess the sort of poppy flavors and they ve actually managed to incorporate genes into brew Izzy s to code for the production of those essential oils and they tested this they actually did some double blind sensor taste test with 40 people and they found that the engineers B.-A produced a greater happy flavor than the regular dry up to be a so even beer drinkers couldn t tell the difference. Whatever next. To thank you so much.
