News Boeing has said that it expects the troubled 737 Max aircraft to return to the skies before the end of this year the jet was grounded off to 2 fatal crashes at Tobar 2018 in the Nisa and then in March $298030.00 pm Just hours after the Indonesian investigators came out with a report blaming mechanical and design problems Boeing said it had developed software updates and hopes that the plane will fly again. Wrote about Boeing on the issues with the 77 Macs and October s in Europe public magazine. Kalau thank you so much for having me was lovely that you re here this it s phenomenally complex isn t it to me given that this is we are talking about piloting a plane which is just as good as brain surgery and in most people s views so it s it s it s quite a challenge that to to talk about all the many issues which which come to bear but you ve you rather boil it down to Boeing s own corporate culture. Well I what struck me about this story was that I had never never never written an aviation story before I hadn t written in a long time but it was immediately understandable to me what had gone wrong that s how stupid the air was that s how sloppy Boeing had gotten. It wasn t going 1st time being sloppy the their previous aircraft the 787 Dreamliner was really a dumpster fire you know to put it mildly. Issues but this. Software. Just literally hijacked the planes turned the nose down and was was not able to not capable of being overridden by the pilots at all was and your in your piece I think you quote something in the Nisa saying it was as if demons had taken over the plane at a certain point the m. Cast system list that this system for leveling up the plane and making sure that it kept its nose up. Would go haywire if sudden things happened. Yes exactly one thing had to go wrong and then that you know that would happen then and then you were. Literally said to say the the one thing that had to happen was that there needed to be a failure of the angle of attack sensor that has been stem discussion there s there s been whistleblower compare complaints suggesting that the angle of attack sensors which are these little things on the side of the plane that tell the pilot how what direction the nose of the plane is pointing is going too far up is going too far down both a dangerous obviously they go tech center is one angle attack center and there are 2 on every airplane although I believe the Airbus may have 3. But the everybody in play has to in go the tech sensors and if one of them malfunction for some reason and there s these little fragile things they re not particularly robust looking and a bird a bird strike can easily just rip one off which is what happened in the O.P. s case they believe. If that failed then Mtesa that debate and when attacked to be the plane does interesting things that horrible things because suddenly it becomes on a bucking bronco in the pilots. It s think I ve I think the Bronco like to think of her that analogy before yes it is immediately start to turn the nose sharply down for 10 seconds very very. In a controlled but very very forceful question and then it s up if if the if the pilot tries to turn the nose that up again and counter the movement it will stop for 5 seconds and then I ll go back for 10 more seconds and do it again so that was the other attribute that this. Was an entirely uncountable the lion a pilot in Indonesia may he rest in peace countered something like 26 times. He might have flown to Jakarta the well. But he was really really alarmed trying to figure out what was going wrong there were many sounds there were many. Lights flashing saying you know airspeed indicator is in an accurate all these things were going on in the cockpit he was trying to figure out what was going on and he handed over the controls to his copilot and that s when that plane lost control but. It it reactivated and be activated for no conceivable reason I don t know what anybody was thinking when they designed the software except that they were thinking and it s just not usually the way of airplanes even even in a even dysfunctional air pre-planned programs go through. Your report that some of the software was was written in a Indian. You know subcontractors shops rather than big red boiling in Seattle it s all. Yes well most of the software in question wasn t actually written by Boeing engineers this is a big coup for Boeing it was sort of part of a quid pro quo with the Indian government that enabled Boeing to land a $20000000000.00 deal $20000000000.00 Still with Spice Jet. And they had been sort of trying to build up their Indian business the Indian airline Airlines had been Airbus customers pretty pretty exclusively prior to that and so get Boeing had been outsourcing a lot of work to Indian I don t want to call them derisively code switch jobs but these were. Big centers where newly minted software engineers were making as little as $5.00 an hour some of the reports I d seen but certainly not more than $11.00 an hour what the union was trying to tell Boeing was that and what consultants what the Boeing was that you know this is not saving us money because at the end of it where it s more like an $80.00 an hour proposition when you when you think of all the mistakes that are made and all the miscommunications that are happening but. But it was it was abundant now and it was a joy to turn it yet because that had been a lot of pieces written suggesting that pilot shooting as responsible law that that in fact you know pilots lack the basic instincts of an It Gets a little bit I have to say gives a little bit racist you know they like the basic instincts of let s say American pilots because I am but trained in the same way and they ve been trained or only on simulators. You have something interesting to say about that. I m not a pilot I think that argument in this case you can always make the argument that the training standard to fallen off certainly I believe that s true but this whole plane this whole thing happened because Southwest Airlines the biggest consumer of the I think tens of thousands of the some 37 in their fleet. They didn t want to have to train all 9000 of their pilots on simulators they didn t want to invest too much in training so there is this constant pressure to just get these pilots certified and get them in and not not have them have to think too hard about what they re going through but in this case there it was still. Impossible 1st pilots to know what was going on and correct for it there was nothing and nobody had ever seen anything like this before and pilots who if the military in the island the manual or it was in the it was in the index of the manual there was yes there was a there was an index but there was no actual real way there was no actual page number it was in a glossary of terms that might have been used in the manual but all of the references so it says m.k. Then you bring characteristics augmentation program but. Care. System but it doesn t actually there s no actual use of the term other than that just sort of out there sui generis in the 600 page manual completely there is no there s no reference to it. They so yes pilot error is not is not the reason for these crashes and the biggest I would say I would call into question the credibility of any. Who made that argument I mean it s it s I ve seen it s like saying you know. Poor people the liberals trying to get poor people to get home loans cause the financial crisis you know it s it s it s just one of those things are cows you know. How flat children says is the primary cause of climate change you know yes these things have been said is one of our hollowed hope of government but but they re not you know they re they re they re silly and they re saying it s it s but it s far from the whole story and I know your piece is very long and very complex but in. In Boeing s kind of financial system which is the stock market so on has has this caused boiling grief I mean is this is this leading to a loss of shareholder confidence and there I m afraid we ll have to leave it if you can tell me what you know what you would say about that. T. American stock market is it is still experiencing a bull run and Boeing is the largest Dow component by a long shot and it has not suffered nearly as much as one would think it has taken a hit recently and that $20000000000.00 of market capitalization. It s very very. Very very unflattering text messages between Boeing engineers and pilots but it is it is still over 300 dollar stuck it s still roughly where it was before the crashes even happened it s quite shocking but you know didn t look to to this the saga of we work you know just. To hear thing here attention to the other big business story right now and you ll see there s a lot of money out there that is looking for a home so it s a good time to start a company more he said you know the right people my pleasure bar in Tassie wrote the piece for The New Republic in the September 18th edition Well I saw no way and I said Bennett who joins us from the Minute Maid stadium in Houston writes The new sad. Right game right right now Roddy if you remember dramatic standing tall poppy anywhere to visit the Washington. And I was a little bit about how to express the problems eat in the post season and see me in tears ready to go and like drive my bass up including the yard and essentially taking it to bed with him to sit out at the changes look what he did changes because as I saw it all from here he signed off with a. National over the top of the fence right field is a huge huge hit that leveled the game up saw 2 grown our own Alex pregnant and that s where we stand right now both teams have had opportunities to add to the schools but it hasn t happened as yet on the 2 pitches and they are finally starting to look like they the storage the superstars the aces whatever you want to call them they re starting to look like those pitches as this gang starts to wear on and they hit their rhythm Justin Verlander currently on the mound and he s got 4 strikeouts was not even ready and he s getting into that group where he is now consistently throwing that 95 mile an hour fastball and he s finding the strike zone with good movement making it very very difficult for the Washington hitches to get a coach some. Good so so the rhythm of the game as it is now a staffer says it and and we re in the middle innings so anything could happen but sometimes sometimes nothing much in scoring tabs might bite happen for a while. Yet he feel a little bit now that we re in the middle of the lineup for you submit something that was out today was just one nice prank but it was the last massacre when it was the bottom half of the line for them so he sends it might be another inning another any and a half before they re going to get get themselves any great opportunity to struggle the school board again and you also feel that they can hang in the sky they know that they re deeper in the pulpit maybe now that I ve got better pitching and even last night Washington looked shaky the moment they have to go in his numbers but they look less convincing and there. There s a tab to the fight and sometimes what is the bullpen. The bullpen is a good match he s coming to a bit of modern diaper. Volunteer isn t it I know in the t.v. Series Supes they use it to describe the area where a lot of the associate lawyers learn in the trade would sit and do they do that in the show bits of a lawyer work if you like a baseball term so it means where the extra pitches will go sit and it is an area where they can warm up and they can do that training beyond the outfield fence act that s very very important because these pitches will come into the gang a little bit like I said I m sorry but throwing a ball 100 miles an hour 9897 miles an hour whatever this takes on your body you have to make sure you re ready in the best way to do that is these plays right in the bullpen have got enough air it s be able throw the ball get themselves fully warmed up and said that s where the pope and his Each team has one and that s where the pitch will come from and if you think back one of the most iconic playschool images of the last 25 years this was a great closer Mariano Rivera at Metallica s and to see the last round Yankee Stadium a Mariano Rivera over $165.00 pounds of him with trucks out towards the pitches man from sense of feel and as he would trust that the news it would have everybody on that feet and there was a real theater seeing that it s just a volunteer it s just dived full like through his right hand side to feel the pull back and as he fell he even made a bit of a whole mix of that. He tried to throw to 1st base and he is just smashed to throw it into his own faults as he was lying down and. That could be all know what happened next question is who for sure. They could well there we go to leave assess and stop the force and it still nationals to Astros to well prepare your ears I know I know sometimes some of the things we do hear a little bit rumbustious I m warning you prepare your ears have a listen to this. Well maybe we didn t give you the full 125 decibels but that is the law disbarred have a record it is called a bell Bard and when it s seen as hard tight it can go 225 decibels which is actually louder than a pneumatic drill I m glad we spared you that let s talk to biology professor of us at Massachusetts Geoffrey put us Geoffrey that was your recording exactly you know and when you played it I had I made the mistake of having the phone right next to my hear. And it kind of hurt a little bit kind of hard to belittle but yeah well you were remembering I suppose the sound of it in the wild where does it live Bellegarde though there s 4 species of Delbert this was this is called the white Bell bird and all the dull birds they like to live in the tops of mountains in Far East and it s in the near tropics there s one species in Central America and then 3 in South America so this species is in the northern Brazilian Amazon you can also find it in Venezuela and Suriname the various places in northern South America it s credit it really does sound like a bell doesn t or there s no mistaking it no mistaking it and that s where it gets its name from and most of the time people hear these birds well before they see them and they re easy to hear because they re super loud but they re hard to spot usually because they re at the tops of trees and so people spend a lot of time looking up trying to figure out what is making that sound and so what we manage to do is we manage to climb up a mountain and when you get up to the top of the mountain then you have these elevation of radiance and sometimes you find yourself looking pretty much straight ahead to bird on top of a tree that happens to be a tree lower on the mountain. Bye bye and that s what you guys to do and is it what s it like is it like some of our British Little brought on by this phenomenal song is it an improving bar I mean it sounds like it would be but it s really about I m going to disappoint you it s got about the size of a pigeon. And it s the males that s saying so if you seen one of these doll birds it s usually going to be the male and the species it s called the white colored and it is Snow White and it is really beautiful the females look really different females don t saying and they re kind of greenish yellow with some black streaking on it on the breast and so forth. And doesn t have a special Argan to produce this and that this particular volume Well it has an amplified version of the same organ that other birds have so birds all across the birds they have evolved this kind of sound production organ called the Cyrix which you don t find in any other sort of animals it s located deep inside the bird so it s where the 2 lungs where the Broncos meet it s the juncture at the base of the trachea and it provides birds a really nice musical advantage because when the sound organ is located deep inside the bird then the sound travels through the trachea all the way through the bird and you get an acoustic effect the same but you get for a musical instrument where the tube helps to shape the the musical quality of the sound. Well designed so it s as you know there s a slightly musical quality and what do they use the sun far as the sun is a regular everyday occurrence so it s in this case it s the males only that thing and so that gives you a pretty good sense of what s going on so the males are competing for the attention of females and this species and many other closely related species it s only the females that take care of babies they do all the investment and rearing babies and so they re then becomes very strong pressure for them to choose mates wisely because they don t want to get stuck with the genetics from a male that s not really a very good male and so they re very picky and when this happens and males start to evolve traits that help them stand out from the crowd and so this these are birds in the group called Co tangas and they re related to another group called the mannequins and there s such an amazing diversity in the males of all these species they have different colors they do these fancy mating dances they click their wings together and the bell birds they seem to have happened upon singing really loudly that s their thing and they can we really say that this is the loudest part in the world it s the loudest bird that I think has been documented and so there might be some other birds out there but some very good ornithologists in the past have speculated that these are the loudest birds in the world I think that I like I would be surprised if soon enough someone says Oh no I recorded some other bird like a crane are some really large bird that might be louder but I don t think that would diminish from how cool this story is with the bell there because the builders are small pigeon sized animal that they can just blare out these incredible sounds. It s 8 years already since the death of Libya s strongman leader Moammar Gadhafi since then with the world looking increasingly away to other conflicts the country splintered into no overall control with several groups violently vying for supremacy and control of the country s capital Tripoli in a report published this week Amnesty International says there is evidence of potential war crimes being committed Tom Hill is the u.s. Institute for Peace senior program officer for North Africa and he s kept a close eye on Libya I asked Tom what s going on there now well right now that we you have a stalemate of sorts between the government of national court which is the internationally recognized government of Libya it s the government that is supported by the u.s. Great Britain and Western powers. That is based in Tripoli and militias that have aligned themselves with that government fighting to a stalemate with a insurgency led by a man calling himself Field Marshal Khalifa Haftar who is a former general of the cut off the regime who has put together a mosaic of militias and former disaffected military. Officers and militia military men who have assaulted the capital and that battle started in April and really has ground to a halt on the outskirts of Tripoli where we now find ourselves kind of deadlocked. One of the impressions I think one has had of the situation is that it s the east of the country versus the West you know it its AAA of asses to prove kind of thing is that is that a reasonable way to see it I think it s it s there d is certainly an east west element to this however I think that s an oversimplification hipster himself has familial ties to the west. There is a lot of cross-pollination in these militias that. Changing alliances and people who are from various tribes in the east or west fighting on a side that is nominally aligned with the other so I don t think it s as clean as an east west battle and then there s this issue of the historically marginalized south which represents a significant piece of the country that is also involved here and this is equally disenfranchised by powers in the West as powers in the east and so it certainly looks. From the outside like it would be simple to stamp this as an East West conflict but once you start scratching at the surface you see that the dynamics are much more fluid and the sides are are less clean than that and he quickly we should be calling it a civil war should we because it is an ideological differences just a power struggle. Yeah it is it is a power struggle it s. It would be I think it oversimplification to say it s a civil war many of the groups that are fighting each other or fighting each other because of historical grievances or perhaps because they re being paid to do so by either accidentally forces or internal forces themselves. That somehow there are clean lines to be drawn between various sides because there are rigidly ideological or or aligned with some kind of personality and really I think is a is a misinterpretation of what s going on Ok either Oz or the next town all powers who have something to gain by keeping the sort of instability going yes I would say that. The conflict has been prolonged. Much much more than than probably it would have had this just been an isolated battle between Libyans by extra powers so you have the talents the French the Qatari as the Turks Egypt Saudi Arabia and the Emirates being the key external actors involved and you can see again like the internal actors themselves think who are not necessarily aligned ideologically cleanly in 2 different 2 different camps that s the true same that you could say about the extra actors who are pursuing very narrow state interests that sometimes align with other states but are often in conflict with one another but I suppose we should and we should remember that Libya has got a bit of oil that s got to bed Horton here. The oil certainly drives a lot of the Italian interest in the French interest. But they are also maybe equally motivated by their desire to see the flow of irregular migrants from sub-Saharan Africa through Libya into Europe stopped so oil certainly is is a driving concern for Europeans but there are other interests at play here so who s supporting General haftorah them so his star is receiving financial support military support largess from them Roddy s and. Any Gyptian as well as some support from the Saudis but primarily Egypt and the Emirates and they are backing have started it seemingly. Without regard to the un sanctions or un resolutions that have. Asked all member states not to provide weapons or money to anyone inside the conflict so. Their involvement is deeply deeply problematic and what about the United States what about the government of Mr Trump unfortunately. I guess depending on where you sit maybe it s fortunate but. I would argue it s unfortunate that the u.s. Has really removed itself from the Libya cond x. And this predates trump the there is a. Well publicized statement that came out of the Obama administration about the policy being we will lead from behind which was not just saying that this is essentially a European problem and that the Americans will not be involved and that philosophy is really carried over to the truck ministration And I think the trumpet ministration has put a lot of emphasis on. Its policy towards Iran and critical to that Iran strategy is maintaining a. Strong partnership with Saudi Arabia and the Emirates and my suspicion is that the Emirates and Saudi Arabia have said to this White House the Trump White House. Hey we will go with you on the Iran front. On all these aspects but don t worry about Libya will take care of that the u.s. Doesn t need to get involved in Libya and Trump has been more than happy to to follow that that s guiding principle. The u.n. Is deeply involved here right I mean the u.n. . Really committed to trying to get some kind of settlement and was presumably very pleased with the government of national id card the u.n. Has had a. I would say a. Really tough go of it in Libya they have had 5 special representatives who have . Serviced the head of their mission in Libya at least 2 have left under scandal or accusations of impropriety at every turn that they have tried to move the ball diplomatically they have been undermined by some extra force be a France be it Russia the Emirates. The United Nations Security Council has repeatedly made rhetorical statements of support but has done everything else except provide support in practice to the to the to the u.n. Mission in Libya and so I think the u.n. Mission has been dealt a really difficult hand. On Salama who is the current special representative to Libya I think is has tried very hard to bring the combatants to the table and resolve this conflict but his efforts have been deeply undercut by all of the actions of the international actors that we ve already mentioned the Emirates and and Egypt sions in particular and I honestly think that the u.n. Mission has been as a result set up for failure and at this point 8 years later I think Libyans have lost faith in the u.n. Process as a as a roadmap to resolution and my recommendation is that the u.n. Security Council rethink what it is that they want the u.n. Involvement to be in this conflict because the current u.n. Process has failed tome hill from the United States as to toot for peace senior program officer in North Africa. Well let s turn to technology in the next multi-billion dollar industry as far as say tech developments are concerned according to some will be family tech that has to acknowledge a products designed to help women s health and well being but this label is generating the big are these new opportunities or just pigeonholing of products aimed at women b.b.c. I realize that the bigger issue is that all technology products women have been badly designed and really what appeared to my eyes to it more than anything was the breast pump I think product you have familiar with Yes very familiar with a horrible architecture based on a machine for cows 100 years ago a noisy painful difficulties tethered to war so we thought what if we could completely reinvent it the findings our engineers are or have people going to recognize a breast pump and it doesn t look so different to what existed before when Tonya launched l b 6 years ago I was looking for cash for her 1st products a smart pelvic floor trainer there was no such word as from tech when Jen gifted me and l.v. Trainer she showed me how the smart trainer works it s an easy way to strengthen your pelvic floor for better bladder control faster postnatal recovery and enhanced intimacy she admits it was home to be taken seriously people who are completely crazy I mean this is a an intimate device and obviously messy pitching to male investors everybody said it s going to be impossible you ll never get celebrities talk about this you ll never get into retail for 10 you re both Tech is a powerful movement that Sim powering women and. Providing new opportunities for female consumers and entrepreneurs like her but what about the people holding the purse strings the venture capitalists whose investment can sink or swim the boldest of new ideas so here we are huddled under a brolly in a decidedly wet central London outside a bar here with Melanie Hayes says one of the minority of venture capitalists in that she s a woman in the bout 90 percent of them are men and we ve come to have a chat about fan tech What do you think money is a good brand my biggest concern with then take a few authors I made is that it is already used for people to say oh I don t do that and there are certain talk to investors who might are not a convenient way of it s kind of no probs delving into some different pool I m familiar use cases with mom saying it s the other danger is I think you re a fan take is that I think there s a delicate balance between using technology to genuinely empower women and creating products and services that perhaps reinforce some of the kind of negative stereotypes or passons of behavior the way the taste so when someone pitches d. And they say I ve got this great fan tech idea does your heart sink is not a label that I m particularly fond of personally but it certainly doesn t now I wouldn t say I wouldn t look at it but I m much more interested in catching a really broad definition of vintage that looks at how do we empower women and girls in insoles and spanks not just necessarily how well be. Carried in a 1000000 a z. Is a tech industry analyst based in San Francisco she travels the world observing tech trends and she doesn t beat around the bush on the subject to fend tech just saying from tech makes me cringe a little bit when he s about men it s not all men talk because only men tackle right so when you re trying to address the problem is focused around men is for everybody it seems to be versus No Q tag attached to it can really know also shares a common concern fen tech should not become. The gayety label for fertility products after all according to the British Fertility Society 30 percent of problems lie with men and 30 percent with women the rest they ve been diagnosed you know it s interesting how you know oblation Yes there s something you know pertains to women but you know if you re looking at having babies and helping people figure now that it s not just a female problem raise a family problem as a woman and there s a man so I think that s where I start you know the line gets quite blurred for me as far as you know why is just labeled as a female solution when actually it is a family solution. Back to l.v. In the breast pump he see a 10 year in an ideal world we wouldn t need them because you know 51 percent of the u.k. Population of women is definitely not nice even investors have have said that before so we shouldn t need to have women 2nd to say we shouldn t need to have men Stagg However the reality is that when it comes to women and everything from menstruation fertility pregnancy post-nasal Manapul all these issues are very to boot and because of that really we re in the dark ages when it comes women cell technology so it s definitely useful to have these different groupings of different startups are dealing with different women s issues come together under collective name of fent. Sorry climate reporting or you could just call it women s health technology but that wouldn t just be one word I suppose let s start a Sunday on about how our side stories of the week. I wrote hello and we ve we ve learned about crisper which is great Geno the thing to turn there are sort of sums of crisper which are really exciting No for for getting into treating certain conditions. Yes So this is exciting news because a group of scientists from mit and Harvard announced on Monday that they have invented a new d.n.a. Editing tool that could possibly lead to a whole new era of Gene editing so there are around 75000 different sins that caused genetic disease in people so diseases like cystic fibrosis and sickle cell anemia and the scientists estimate that this new method has the potential to fix 89 percent of them so this new method is coprime editing and you can think of it as a genetic where process so with a fine and replace function so it has special proteins that can find the faulty d.n.a. And when it does nix it and writes in a new section of d.n.a. So it s really precise especially compared to the gene editing tool that we have today which you mention is crisper cast 9. Cast 9 is something that was developed 7 years ago and that s more like a pair of molecular says it is so what it does is it hones in on the target d.n.a. And then it cuts into but what you often end up with is this have has that mix of edits so sometimes you get extra chunks of d.n.a. Added in and sometimes you take too much the any out but this new method prime editing that s a lot more promising but of course it s still really early days and scientists say they need to do more research to make sure it s safe in humans and we actually see it 1st use in agriculture for example to make cross health you know most sustainable it s Craven task to go isn t it because just to think of the the level of of detail and you know the scan if you like to microscope I do I have no idea how you get that deep into a gene so that you can precisely Pradhan paste Yeah it s pretty incredible it s about matching. With the target d.n.a. And then we kind of home in and match it in that sense so it s not as if there s an operator it s not like you know remote surgery or robotic surgery or anything. No that s all my left operate is in that sense I go see this program the like Killer program of the gene that and then you let it get on with it that s right yeah toss and if I mean if we allow ourselves to look a little bit down the road Sandy where would this be you know use or I mean what kind of what kind of conditions could be helped it one day by this kind of technology so anything any genetic conditions to a cause by of wrong a faulty code in the a sense to of having having a t o g o c it s a different bet in that sense it could go in and correct it so things like cystic fibrosis sickle cell anemia those are too many common genetic diseases that could potentially be fixed but we re talking quite a few years down the road with along with well let s talk about Neanderthals no every time we talk about Neanderthals seems to me that where we re really in in stating them aren t we we re giving them a kind of new status and not leaving about kind of dumb Dom s of the you know the primate world what do we know about they are not holes. Yeah definitely so we used to have the stereotype that our evolutionary cousins of these like dimwits at savage brutes who would walk around waving their tops about but we keep getting more evidence that we re and estimating them so we already know that they could make fire and create art and now their recent findings from a team of Akio that is in the Netherlands who say they have found tools from 50000 years ago that have traces of glue and them so the so-called glue is actually tar that you get from birch Bach and it was used to create a grip for a stone flake which made it easier for the Neanderthals to grip the shop so that they could use it as a cutting tool without hurting themselves so experts say that the finest significant because it demonstrates that the Neanderthals were capable of both complex thinking and forward counting so that the tools were found in an area that is now set much under the North Sea But at that time it was an icy to dry with relatively few trees so they had to really can a head to be able to gather in a spot it s a process that requires about 40 kilo grams of wood and once they got it they would have to heat it up extract the tar and then make the grips so it really points to you know evidence that the Neanderthals one as dumb as we may think well you have 40 kilos there s a lot of bark to go. At as and they don t have many trees they were going to spot a part of a school of really harsh environment they lived. Just like Game of Thrones really. So they re there boiling up the birch bark to make goo or make this birch tar work what with the birch tar like was it was it like tar was it a black substance. Yes if you see pictures of the slightly thick brown substance that I now congealed it looks like controlled gravy in a sense. Having applied those whose it was pretty good glue was it to seem to overhear Yeah definitely and the interesting thing was that they don t just use it for hunting tools which I guess with a pirate yet and they used it for a mystic tools like knives to cut you know whatever meat they may have gotten you know so it shows that it was pretty widespread it wasn t just one tool they think they may have used across many different tools and there s a great story of the world s oldest peril tell us about. The archaeologist see the belief they have found the world s oldest pole right do you want to guess how old it might be. Or you know are 100 years old it s actually 8000 years old so a poll was discovered and 2017 but the announcement was made a couple of days ago and it was discovered on an island called Marla of Abu Dhabi and what happened was that the ologists were excavating the island which has numerous collapsed stone struck just and now believed to be the architect of the u.a.e. When they discovered this Paul and the discovery provides evidence that the Poles were traded in a region in that region since no less that times and historical texts actually suggest that Abu Dhabi was widely known for its poles and was a major trading have to them by the 16th century so they would trade these poles for ceramics and other goods of Mesopotamia and nation Iraq and if you ve seen a picture of the pole it s actually pretty small all as a diamond to have less than one 3rd a centimeter but has this lovely pale pink color. It s going to be on display for the next week on witts at Abu Dhabi Luther s So definitely check it out if you have some time if you re there.
