And the uk drops switzerland, Czech Republic and jaimaica from its safe travel list so anyone arriving from saturday will have to quarantine for m days. Welcome. Were starting in the United States where authorities are warning of flash floods, high winds and a catastrophic storm surge from hurricane laura. The governor of louisiana has told residents that even as the storm weakens, the threat to life is far from over. Three people have been killed by falling trees including a 14 Year Old Girl. The storm was one of the most powerful on record when it hit the coast overnight. This is the latest update from the National Hurricane centre on twitter. President trump has been receiving a briefing on the Emergency Response to hurricane laura, at the federal Emergency Management agency. He was flanked by the Vice President mike pence. Heres what President Trump said. I was actually prepared to postpone the speech tonight and make it on monday. I was going to texas, i was going to louisiana, maybe arkansas. Looks like arkansas, i spoke to the governor commits when to be in pretty good shape, but they will need some help. But, now, it turns out weve got a little bit lucky. It was very big, very powerful, but it passed quickly and so everything is on schedule. We will probably be going on saturday or sunday and we will be heading to texas and louisiana. This is what hit overnight. This is satellite imagery from the Us National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration it was captured just before hurricane laura made landfall. When it did, it brought winds of 240 kilometres an hour making it the most powerful to hit the Us Gulf Coast state since 1856. These pictures are from lake charles louisiana. And this was in lafayette. Also very heavy rain and damaging winds there. Authorities had earlier issued stark warnings about storm surges of at least four and half metres. Heres how that was covered by the us weather channel. This is why they call it a nonsurvival storm surge flooding. And this is also why they you need to Pay Attention to the latest Evacuation Order and effectuate now. Evacuate evacuate now. It just may save your life. The storm surges were not as bad as predicted and hurricane laura has been downgraded but the threat is not over. This is the latest warning from the federal Emergency Management agency. The message this morning is, if you are in a safe place, stay in your home, dont go out sightseeing. Officials say it may be several days before they can assess the full extent of the damage. More than 400,000 households have lost power. The hurricane hit land shortly after midnight local time near the small town of cameron in louisiana. Half a Million People were ordered to leave their homes, but some stayed. These pictures are from lake charles there are fallen power lines, trees across the road and damaged buildings. And this tweet has been widely shared. These pictures from baton rouge were accompanied by the caption saying our parish government refused to take down the confederate souths defenders monument. Hurricane laura had other plans and brought it down herself. In neighbouring texas, streets have been flooded and homes surrounded by water. Power lines are down and buildings have been damaged. But there have been no reported deaths. Heres what the governor has said. We do have search and rescue teams going throughout the entire area as we speak, looking for anybody who needs to be rescued. But because so many people did evacuate especially from the beaumonts, port arthur orange area, it probably means that we were able to escape this devastating storm without any loss of life. Cbs News Reporter courtney zubaski is in texas. Where i am right now in galveston, we did not take a direct hit. We are along the coast of texas, but this neighbourhood still got water because the Galveston Bay came out of its banks and flooded this neighbourhood and a nearby restaurant. But this is nothing like what we are seeing in louisiana east of here, with 150 mph winds, there are homes with their roofs ripped off, glass shattered in buildings, and the biggest threat right now is the trees. The trees that fell down and hit homes and hit people. We are now hearing about two fatalities, one is a 14 Year Old Girl who was in the home with her parents when a tree fell on top of that. Lets go back to louisiana, to the city of alexandria, which is inland from lake charles, lafayette and baton rouge. Stephanie wagner is with the red cross there. We were scared, somewhat from the power of the storm, but all night long, i watched damage to the Properties Around me. We did lose power at about three oclock in the morning. There was substantial wind and damage to, of course, everything outside, as well as lots of rain and even some street flooding, but thats kind of pales in comparison for now to what has been going on down south in the lake charles area. Yeah, of course, and what help do people need . Right now, people are in need of sheltering, so that is with the red cross as well as the folks with the government are doing. We are working to ensure that people have a safe place to stay, that they have access to immediate emergency means, things like food and water, and that they are able to just rest their heads somewhere safe and comfortable until we can start this Recovery Process. And how much is this Recovery Process being hampered by coronavirus . There is a lot of complications that certainly come with dealing a pandemic in the midst of a major natural disaster. As far as i was sheltering his concerns, we have as far as our sheltering is concerned, we have adapted our practices to be able to do it in a much more socially distanced in safer manner. We are checking temperatures at the door. We have an isolation area for those who may have symptoms or may have tested positive for the virus. We have an area for the general public as well. Our cots are spread apart further and even the occupancy of these facilities has been taken down a little bit, so we have more facilities to manage to allow more people to seek refuge when they need it. And do you have any idea of how any people you are able to help . Welcome as of last night, we are sheltering more than 10,000 people across the state of texas and louisiana. We do anticipate that that number will fluctuate over the next several days. We are standing ready to support through the help of our community partners, our government officials as well to support any of the needs of the communities that may be impacted by this storm. Of course, the impact could be ongoing. Any idea how long it will be before things can get back to normal . We dont really want to put a timetable on these things because it really is a marathon. We are not sure how long its going to take to have power restored order to gain access to some of those areas that may be unreachable at this point, but the American Red Cross is on the ground ready to respond as soon as we can get a ccess ready to respond as soon as we can get access to those areas safely. Our thanks to Stephanie Wagoner there. Sports stars in america have brought major us leagues to a halt by refusing to play, in protests against the Police Shooting ofjacob blake in wisconsin. In the last hour President Trump has given his view on the nba protests. I dont know much about the nba protest. I know their ratings have been very bad, because i think people are a little tired of the nba, frankly. But i dont know too much about the protests, but i know their ratings have been very bad, and thats unfortunate. Theyve become like a political organisation, and thats not a good thing.
