Plus the fall of an equal opportunity offender. Milo yiannopoulos resigns as an editor at breitbart news. And you you know youve gone too far when youre too much for breitbart. But why was a man who spouted so much hate ever a darling of conservatives in the first place . Thats a good question. And well answer that for you this evening. Get right to cnn correspondent mr. Jeff zeleny with the breaking news of the evening. The newest thing that we have. Lets talk about the president now, signaling an expansion of deportations of undocumented immigrants in this country. What exactly is the white house saying . He is indeed. They sent two memorandums to the department of Homeland Security today basically saying theyre going to enforce existing u. S. Law. Anyone in country as an undocumented immigrant could be subject to being arrested. This is different from the obama administration. That was generally reserved for criminals, a violent criminal. They didnt have the bandwidth to go after everyone. But White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer today made clear that everyone whos undocumented could now be at risk. Everybody who is here illegally is subject to removal at any time. That is consistent with every country, not just ours. If youre in this country in an illegal manner, obviously theres a provision that could ensure that you be removed. But the priority the president has laid forward and the priertd that i. C. E. Is putting forward through dhss guidance is to make sure that people who have committed a crime or pose a threat to Public Safety are a priority of their efforts. To make clear, the white house is saying indeed that criminals, people who have other records, and other things, are the top of the priority list to be deported. But simply making suggestions that all laws will be enforced is causing alarm throughout immigrant communities tonight. And this is just simply the first of a few steps. Were still waiting this week for a new executive order here for the travel ban that weve been talking about for weeks here. That could come tomorrow or as the week goes on. Tell us about the dreamers. The young immigrants who were brought to this country as children. Don, that was one of the executive orders that president obama signed into law, basically saying that any young person who comes to the country illegally or not could stay. They are called the dreamers. The daca act, if you will. And President Trump, this administration, is not touching that. For now at least. They say they are prioritizing criminals and others. Theyre not even looking at the dreamers. But its clear that this is a for now. Its unclear what will be happening in the months and years to come. For now, the dreamers are off the table. And this is something that immigration hardliners will actually be raising questions against this administration on because they believe that they are breaking the law too, regardless of their age, don. And you asked sean spicer, jeff, about how much authority the president S New National security adviser, Lieutenant General h. R. Mcmaster, will have. What did he have to say about that . Well, don, that is the other big thing going on here as they begin the second month of this white house. The new National Security adviser general h. R. Mcmaster, Longtime Army strategist, he is now in charge of all of this. So i asked sean spicer today at the White House Briefing if he would have the ability to put his own sort of advisers in the National Security council and sean spicer, the White House Press secretary, said absolutely, he has full authority to do so. But the question is steve bannon. If youll remember from a month or so ago, the chief strategist of the white house, steve bannon, was made a part of the Principals Committee of the National Security council. Thats aligned with the secretary of state, the defense secretary, the attorney general, others. Usually, theres not a political adviser at the table like this. So we asked the white house if the new National Security adviser will be allowed to make a recommendation on that. Sean spicer, the White House Press secretary, said he would indeed, it would be up to the president to make that determination. But its unclear if there will be any changes on that at this point. The new National Security council met with his council tonight in the situation room. Unclear how this is going to be Going Forward. But he is sort of building a new team here and this is the beginning or the continuation of this reboot as we head into the second month. Jeff zeleny starting us off at the white house. Thank you very much. I want to bring in bill kristol, the editor of the weekly zarnd. Gloeria borger, van jones senior political commentator and jan brewer, the former governor of arizona. Gangs all here. Thank you so much for joining us. Gloria, im going to start with you. Were seeing a fundamental shift in u. S. Immigration policy expanding the number of individuals who can be deported or detained. As controversial as this may be, the bottom line is were seeing President Trump fulfill a key campaign promise. He is. This is what he said he would do. Aside from dreamers, which he has said im going to keep president obama policy on dreamers, as jeff was pointing out. But look, this is what he promised in the campaign. And however, there are lots of questions tonight. The president s executive order calls for the hiring of 10,000 new enforcement agents. That could cost anywhere, ive just looked at estimates between 1 and 4 billion, add that to the cost of the wall, which is over 20 billion and you have to wonder how this is going to be paid for and how long its going to take for all of these changes to take effect. The administration said this isnt changes, this is just the kind of strong enforcement that the nation should have had all along. But there are lots of immigration experts who say you know what, by adding this huge police force here, youre giving people Broad Authority to detain, arrest and deport that they never had before. How different is it, though, gloria, before i get to the other folks, than the previous administrations deportation ols . They called president obama the deporter in chief. Right. Because he deported 2 million people. But what president obama did was he said that Illegal Immigrants convicted of serious crimes should be the priority for deportation. Now customs and Border Control can remove anyone convicted of a crime and the question is what is a crime . Is a crime a dui . Is a crime tax evasion . You know, it seems that everything is going to be lumped together. And they dont know yet. Its not exactly spelled out. So we have to see as it is implemented who gets deported and what is constituted as a crime, or at least a serious enough crime to be deported. Van jones, the white house says the goal is not mass deportation but these guidelines are going to make it easier to deport people. Whats your biggest concern here . I think if you just take a step back its easy to get down into the weeds, this thing and that thing. It sends a signal that america is a less friendly and a less welcoming place. And you cant actually calculate what that means to the country. In other words, youve got a lot of people who are here right now who are going to be afraid. Theyre going to be less willing to cooperate with law enforcement. If they see a crime they might be afraid to call the cops. They might be afraid to do any number of things. But also there are people when you look at the ban on those seven muslim countries, when you look at this, they might think to themselves, you know, i used to want to come to the United States. I useded to want to be part of that country. You i dont think they want me. So im going to keep my genius to myself. Im going to try another way. And you could literally be suffering from you know, we had a brain drain to our favor. So many great people wanted to come here. Im afraid that some of the great people arent going to want to come. A lot of americans are okay with that. Sometimes we think that americans are great because so Many Americans who were born here are great. Remember your high school class. Weve got a lot of americans who are kind of mediocre. But we attract a disproportionate number of amazing people to the country and thats what gives us that edge. If you throw that away, you just dont know what the consequences are longterm. Governor brewer, i want you to weigh in. I know youre pleased with the president. Weve heard you speak about illegal immigration in your state. But about the dreamers, governor, the white house says theyre safe for now. How do you feel about that . Well, you know, first of all, don, i would like to say that what he proposed today is simply enforcing existing laws. We that live in america, i think we all want to believe that we all are living under the laws. And if we dont like the laws, then change the laws. But dealing with illegal immigration is a very difficult situation because it has a lot of issues connected to it. But first and foremost, he wants to deport convicted Illegal Immigrants, people that have been charged and convicted. That is the number one priority. And hes not doing anything different than what he promised the people of america. And he won that election. And the people of america support him in that direction. We agree with you. And that was my first question to gloria. But specifically about the dreamers. He said the dreamers are okay. How do you feel about that, governor . Personally, i dont believe its a top priority. I know theyre here and probably have lived here a long time and they came for reasons that their parents probably brought them to have a better life but bottom line is they too are illegal. I dont think theyre going to go door to door and have major raids on the dreamers. The fact of the matter is that if they wanted to do that they would already have done it do you think they should be able to . You think they should do it . I think the law says that they can do it. Sure. I want to bring i think theres a human instinct that we understand theres an issue there. But first and foremost, don, and think everybody will agree, we have a lot of issues to deal with. We first and foremost, weve got to get our border secured. But to sit here and the sky is falling, the sky is falling because were going to enforce the law, come on. I mean, it is the law. It is i dont think anyone has said that on this panel. We debate it. Well, of course. It is a new immigration policy. We should be debating it. But nobody is saying the sky is falling it is not a new immigration policy. Hes enforcing the existing laws. Thats what new policy is. Thats what listen, policy is the way you i dont understand why youre saying its we should be debating this. Were americans. Thats what we do. This is what we do in the media. Thats why we have a free media. Thats why were here. We want to get your side. But i havent heard do you agree hold on, governor. But i havent heard anyone here say the sky is falling. Were simply talking about this new plan that the white house proposed today and were trying to make heads or tails of it. Thats it. No one is saying the sky is falling. That hes going to enforce the existing laws. Everybody seems to think you made that point. Gloria made that point as well. Well, i mean and you dont want to think that its illegal. If you want the law changed, then change the law. But in the meantime, we have illegal immigration coming across our borders. Okay. I want to get bill kristol. Bills been sitting here patiently, governor. Im sorry. Go ahead. It doesnt deal with anyone coming across the borders. It may deters some people from coming because i think theyll be deported more quickly. So in that respect insofar as so much of Trumps Campaign rhetoric was about the wall, so far no wall. Secondly, i would say the main republican objection to what president obama did was partly his lax enforcement of the wall and now trumps stricter enforcement of the laws. Thats a policy debate that is that hes proposing. Hes ordering dhs to go ahead with. Well see if it happens. I want to get your one more thing on that, though. The dreamers. That was the complaint. The republican complaint was that president obama did something that the legislation did not authorize to dwout executive order. Remember president obama had earlier said i would need legislation to do that. Then 2014 he goes ahead and does it. Republicans scream and yell. Trump makes it a central piece of his campaign speeches, hes going to reverse those executive orders. Hes not doing that. I think thats interesting. So the question for me is this is whats so hard to tell about trump. Ultimately, is he going to pursue fairly moderate policies . Look at governor brewer, shes defending him, hes just enforcing the law, hes not even changing anything. With a certain amount of bravado and a certain amount of appealing to his base. Im getting tough, im getting tough. But guess what . The dreamers stay. Guess what . Im just enforcing the law a little more. Or is he as van suggested fundamentally changing our attitude toward immigrants, legal and illegal, in which case i think it is a more fundamental change. Were saying hes just enforcing the law. Thats what governor brewers saying, just enforce the law. The former president was called the deporter in chief because he deported so many different people. But ive heard people on this network and others saying, well, the administration failed us before, can you really say those two things at the same time if you i think president obama, most of that deportation was before he modified his instructions to on how to enforce the law to dhs. With prosecutorial discretion and all that. But look, i do think its a very interesting question. A lot of it will depend on how its implemented. This is true of a fair number of trumps policies, foreign policy, domestic policy. Is it a lot of talk and bravado and keep the base happen and then at the end of the day you have a fairly normal, somewhat more conservative administration than president obamas obviously or is it a fundamental change in american policy with all kinds of implications . I personally would be relieved if it were the first. Im worried if its the second. I think vans point is important. Ive been fairly hawkish on immigration. But you dont want to send a signal to the world that we are scared of people coming in, that we think the situation in the u. S. Right now is unmanageable, the borders are being overrun, that the cities are teeming with people who are here illegally and weve got a panic. I do think thats not true and not a healthy thing for the president to convey to the degree hes conveying it. This is a very good conversation. I wanted to talk about the president and africanamericans antisemitism, visiting the africanamerican History Museum in washington but i want to continue on this just a little bit and then well talk about that in just a little bit. The cost of this, is it worth it . And then well talk about the other thing. Well be back. Mom, i just saved a lot of money on my Car Insurance by switching to geico. I should take a closer look at geico. You know, geico can help you save money on your Homeowners Insurance too . Great geico can help insure our mountain chalet how long have we been sawing this log . Um, one hundred and fourteen years. Man i thought my arm would be a lot more jacked by now. Im not even sure this is real wood. Theres no butter in this churn. Do my tris look okay . Take a closer look at geico. Great savings. And a whole lot more. Only at t offers you all your live channels and dvr on your devices. Datafree. Entertainment. Your way. Only from at t. Back now with my panel. Gloria borger, you first. I believe you brought up the costs of this if im not mistaken. The administration wants to hire more Border Agents, more detention facilities. We were talking about the wall, you said like 20 billion, what have you. Ive heard, this is just from critics who say this is not the biggest problem facing our country. That 20 billion or that however many billion dollars he wants to use to hire more Border Agents can be spent in better places. And number two, congress has to appropriate that money. How does all that happen . Hows this going to be paid for . Well, dont forget, mexicos going to pay for the wall eventual hi. Thats what President Trump says. Look, i think thats a problem. But republicans control the congress. Theyre going to have to figure out the money because not only did President Trump campaign on this but republicans campaigned on this. And i think if youre going to enforce border security, as the governor says, and youre going to expand the pool of people that you are looking at and that you are arresting, detaining and potentially deporting, youre going to need these 10,000 agents. And the estimates on that are between somewhere 1 and 4 billion dollars. So add that to the cost of the wall and youre talking real money. Theres another cost. Can i don, you know, i live in a district with a republican congresswoman, barbara comstock. She didnt campaign on spending 20 billion on building a wall. Right. I think people are overestimating how easily the congress is going to go along with everything donald trump says, on this issue and other issues. Theyre going along with him for now. Theyre confirming his cabinet nominees. Its a very strong tradition of deferring to cabinet picks by a president of your party. When it comes to actual legislation, actual budgets, actual spending, congressmen and women and senators are going to have their own minds. And i this think thats i think the big next development that people are not anticipating. Thats my point. Because you have conservative republicans who dont want to spend this kind of money and theyve also got to figure out what theyre going to do with obama care and everything else. So the question is whats the priority in the congress . Whats the priority of the republicans in the Congress Versus whats the priority of President Trump . Thus my first question to you, gloria. Whats the priority here . Quickly, van, because i have so many other things to talk about. I dont want to spend a lot of time talking about this. Go ahead. Theres another cost. Human cost which i think people talk about. This is also the economic cost. People act as if the undocumented population is just kind of sitting around hoping they dont get deported. These people work every day. They catch the early bus. They work in the service sector. They work in the agricultural sector. They work in the manufacturing sector, the building trades. You start chasing all these people out. What you wind up doing is you drive up costs to everybody else for everything. These are pillars of our chi. Economy. And i think part of the reason theres concern here is weve stopped telling ourselves the truth about how our country works. The undocumented community is contributing tremendously to america. You knock out those pillars and youre going to have unintended consequence, economically as well as morally. Were not going to solve it all in this one segment. I want to move on and talk about other things. The president today while at the museum of africanamerican history in washington pledged to a united to unite a divided country. How do you see the president s actions today on immigration and another travel ban impacting that . First van jones and then the rest of the panel. Well, i dont think it helps very much. Listen, i see this president struggling with himself. On the one hand i think he really does not want to be a divider, to be seen as someone who has hatred in his heart. On the other hand, some of the things hes done and says has incite dmd our country at least given i think comfort to people in this country who deserve no comfort, including this whole altright thing, these basically rebranded neonazis. I think the president now has the extra burden, its unfair but he does have the extra burden to really speak out even more boldly against some of these folks who are trying to ride his coattails. He should slap them off his coattails every day. It shouldnt take a week to give a speech. He should do it every day. Because they are vocal online and horrific online every day. Governor, on to another subject, we have seen republicans i want everybody else to weigh in but i dont have time. Governor, we have seen republicans face rowdy crowds at town halls across the country. Now the president is weighing in. He said the socalled angry crowds in home districts of some republicans are actually in nurm ca numerous cases planned out by liberal activists, sad. Whats your response to these town halls, governor . Well, you know, don, theres people out there that are angry. They want answers. And theyre afraid. I assume theyre talking about the Obama Health Care issue, right . And it is a concern of a lot of people. Theyve got to come up with a solution. I dont know exactly what theyre going to do. Its going to affect arizona in some manner because arizonas got a different type of health plan. Were capitated and its the Gold Standard for the country. But if they do block granting we will lose a lot of money with that. We have weighed in from arizona to hopefully help be part of the solution. Certainly i know the majority of people out there realize that Health Insurance is important to each and every person, whether youre healthy or youre not healthy. You want insurance just in case. Thats why we call it insurance. Theyre going to have to come up with a solution. And i am watching very carefully. I did some dramatic i never supported obamacare or the Affordable Care act, but when it got enacted i expanded medicaid, and people were very grateful for that. Peoples lives were saved with that. And theyre worried about that being taken away and rightfully so, right . They are. They are. Bill, i want to get your reaction to President Trump speaking out against antisemitism today following a rash of bomb threats and vandalism against jewish sites across the country. Heres the president. This tour was a meaningful reminder of why we have to fight bigotry, intolerance, and hatred in awful its very ugly forms. The antisemitic threats targeting our Jewish Community and Community Centers are horrible and are painful and a very sad reminder of the work that still must be done to root out hate and prejudice and evil. So the question is, bill, he did do it but people are asking what took the president so long . Why do you think it took the president so long, and what did you think about what he had to say . I have no idea if he maybe should have said it a little earlier but i thought what he said was appropriate and i hope we hear more of that donald trump and a little less of the tweeting donald trump and the incendiary donald trump and the divisive donald trump. Tone does matter as van was saying and i think this was an appropriate turn. Can i say one word about what jan brewer said . Which was really quite interesting. Shes a very conservative governor of a pretty conservative state, arizona. She was basically saying just now im worried about the republican plan which would block grant medicaid because it would reduce payments to for arizona. It shows governing is hard. The idea that hes got a republican majority, they just ram through the replacement for obamacare. Thats where the rubber will hit the road. That will be the test. Can he govern successfully . Thats the last word on this. Well see you guys soon back on the show. Just ahead, President Trump finally condemning antisemitism today but the reaction was not 100 positive. Were going to talk about that next. Mobility is very important to me. Thats why i use e trade mobile. Its on all my mobile devices, so it suits my mobile lifestyle. The president today speaking out against growing antisemitism in america. I want to talk about that now with Fareed Zakaria, the host of Fareed Zakaria gps right here on cnn. Thank you for joining us. You know, the president was asked about antisemitism twice. He never answered the question. And then take a listen to this. What do you say to those among the Jewish Community in the states and in israel and maybe around the world who believe and feel that your administration is playing with xenophobia and maybe racist tones . Well, i just want to say that we are, you know, very honored by the victory that we had, 306 Electoral College votes. As far as people, jewish people, so many friends, a daughter who happens to be here right now, a soninlaw, and three beautiful grandchildren, i think that youre going to see a lot different United States of america over the next three, four, or eight years. Theres been a report out that 48 bomb threats have been made against Jewish Centers all across the country in the last couple of weeks. There are people who are committing antisemitic acts or threatening to you see, he said he was going to ask a very simple, easy question. And its not. Its not. Not a simple question. Not a fair question. Okay. Sit down. I understand the rest of your question. So heres the story, folks. Number one, i am the least antisemitic person that youve ever seen in your entire life. Number two, racism, the least racist person. See, he lied about he was going to get up and ask a very straight, simple question. So you know. Welcome to the world of the media. But let me just tell you something. That i hate the charge. I find it repulsive. So fareed, why denounce now . Was it political pressure . Im sure it was political pressure. Look, i take donald trump at his word, that he is absolutely not an antisemite. I think hes offended that people ask him this question. But i think he needs to understand why it is coming up. It is coming up against a backdrop of rising antisemitism in europe and the United States. Now, part of this is sadly a virus that exists within the Muslim Community and arab communities, particularly in europe. But theres another whole piece to this, which is an altright White Supremacist Movement that has flirted with antisemitism historically, more than flirted, and even does so now. And given that so many of these people have supported donald trump, david duke celebrates donald trump, people were asking trump can you Say Something about this, can you forthrightly disavow it, so thats the context in which its happening. I dont think anyone thinks donald trump is an antisemite. But there is this very disturbing rise of antisemitism, and its important to condemn the part of it that is coming out of middle eastern communities, but there is another part of it which, you know, does have this association with having supported trump. And people are looking to him to say i do not want your support if youre an antisemite. And thats the because hes the leader of the free world. And theres a disconnect here because when you ask him about or some of his people about not denouncing antisemitism, theyre like hes not antisemitic. Thats not the question, whether hes antisemitic. I dont think people believe that. I think the question is why cant he be more forceful and clear his denouncement . Why cant he do it as much as he denounces some other things or talks about the media or other its a question of a certain kind of moral leadership. Somebody did an analysis of Donald Trumps major speeches and pointed out that almost uniquely as an american president and as an american president ial candidate the words that rarely appear in Donald Trumps vocabulary when on the campaign trail, in his inaugural and forward are words like democracy, liberty, justice. You know, the things that often are seen as the american president setting a certain moral tone, setting a certain aspirational idealism. So this is part of that. This is a kind of statement of moral leadership. And nobody is saying, you know, youre an antisemite. The question is can you raise the dialogue, condemn evil and celebrate virtue . And stop taking it personally as a personal attack when youre the president of the United States, this is about the american people, not about you. And there is that very disturbing thing he does with the media where he says i thought this was going to be a good question. You know, good questions are questions that the public needs information on, the public needs to know your opinion on. And that gentleman, that reporter these are not softball questions. Thats not how you should define a good question. Fareed, the Anne Frank Center for Mutual Respect says the president s efforts were too little too late. Heres the statement from its executive director. The president s sudden acknowledgment is a bandaid on the cancer of antisemitism that has infected his own administration. His Statement Today is a pathetic asterisk of condescension after weeks in which he and his staff have committed grotesque acts and omissions reflecting antisemitism yet day after day have refused to apologize and correct the record. Do you think its a bandaid . I dont know what that statement is referring to. If youre going to make charges that serious about the president and the administration you need to provide clear evidence. I havent seen any evidence of antisemitism coming out of the white house. I think theres the one issue of the holocaust day statement that took out the reference to jews and that was unfortunate. But i think that seems wildly overdrawn honestly. But again, if theres a charge they should be specific. Dont have this kind of general characterization. General maybe to some. Hyperbolic statement. So i want to get your response on the new immigration policy. The administration expanding the number of individuals that can be deported or detained. What do you think in. Look, i think that this is what donald trump had promised on the campaign trail. And i think that if they are going to do it they will recognize that the United States is a country of immigrants that these people are rooted in the fabric of the society, that in many cases these are people who many employers, many communities have tacitly integrated. In other words, we are as culpable as they are in terms of wanting their labor, wanting their ifltd. I think it will be more wrenching, more disruptive than people realize. I think the best solution to the immigration problem is to try to figure out how do we make this work Going Forward so that we dont have a situation where people are pouring across the border illegally. But to be rounding up people and deporting them for often minor offenses, theres something about it that feels very wrong about you know, it feels different from the america that weve known. If you think about it, for decades and decades we havent done this. There have been debates about immigration. But if you talk about actually deporting over a million, 12 million people, which is what he talked about during the campaign, thats a very different america. I think we need a transparent study and maybe a bipartisan study on actually if the wall will do anything. Because i hear so many people saying, you know, theres already a fence there. And that this is 20 billion that could be used elsewhere. There are other solutions. Oh, i think the evidence is pretty clear the wall wont do anything. For one thing, don, literally like generals say were fighting the last war. I cant say the statistic enough because its important to understand. Net migration from mexico today is below zero. Meaning there are more people in america, mexicans going back to mexico, than mexicans coming in. Were fighting a problem that doesnt exist anymore. Secondly, as you say, we already have a wall. A president named barack obama built it. It was built over the last ten years. About 700 miles of wall. The parts that dont have a wall are either water or very rugged terrain. Its not clear that that is really the key impediment. The key impediment is good border patrolling. So this will be a very expensive we used to talk about republicans talk about the bridge to nowhere. This is the wall to nowhere. Yeah. And remember, you can always tunnel under. Well, as donald trump once pointed out, he said, nothing will ever stop anybody from getting over the kind of wall im talking about, which is a 30foot wall, and then he pauses and said except maybe a 31foot and then a tunnel. He answered his own question. Dont miss Fareed Zakaria, Fareed Zakaria gps 10 00 a. M. Sunday and 1 00 p. M. Eastern. President trump condemned antisemitism today. America has seen a shocking rise in antisemitic threats and crimes, but whats behind it . Lets discuss now. Alan der sho swits here. Author of electile dysfuncti dysfunction. Frederick long. And david binkoff, columnist for the daily caller. So good to have all of you here and you each have such good perspectives on this. Its good to have you here. Good evening. Able, you first. In january a Jewish Community center received this call from a caller with a disguised voice. A large number of jews are going to be slaughtered. Their heads are going to be blown off from the shrapnel. Theres a lot of shrapnel. Theres going to be a bloodbath thats going to take place in a short time. So the threat, alan, turned out to be a hoax. In fact, so far all the threats are hoaxes. 70 reported bomb threats affecting 54 Jewish Community centers in 27 states this year. This year alone. But they cause real chaos and fear. And then a Jewish Cemetery was desecrated in st. Louis this weekend. Are you worried that the hoaxes could escalate into real violent incidents . Well, no question. That happened in europe. We saw it happen in france. A number of places in france. It happened in other parts of europe. Yes, they certainly can escalate. Look, there are two types of threats that are coalescing at the same time. Threats from the altright that manifest themselves by these kinds of calls and maybe even some violence. But equally important are threats from the hard left. Particularly on college campuses. Jewish students today prork, proisrael students dont feel comfortable on campuses p. I just saw a film today called hate stations that show whats going on on a number of college campuses. We have to be nonpartisan about this. Its easy for republicans to say the democrats tolerate antisemitism. Its easy for the democrats to say donald trump tolerates antisemitis m. We have to get together in a bipartisan way and condemn antisemitism from the right and the left equally. Fred, why are hate crimes so unsettling to this community . And why is this community being targeted now . Well, this communitys being targeted, don, for a number of reasons but a lot of it has to do with people who are scared, people who feel powerless and so they act out in a way against someone they think of as an other. And that really calls for strong leadership condemning that in the strongest terms. What makes hate crimes different from other kinds of crimes is it not only affects the individual victims but it affects the whole target community. That explains why people who live across town or even across the country dont just feel sorry for the victims, they feel as if they themselves are victims. We see this in racial incidents and antisemitic incidents and homophobic incidents. And it also affects the whole community. Thats why we feel this tear in the fabric of america. The genius of america has been the sense that out of many are one. So that gets torn apart by hate crimes, which is what makes this particularly pernicious. David, to you now. President trump spoke today at the museum of mfrm africanamerican history. The president has gotten a lot of criticism for not speaking out sooner. Do you think his statements help with this issue . Does it put it to rest by any measure . I think its perfectly adequate but i wish he didnt feel he had to because i thought it was unreasonable to demand that he condemn something when theres no evidence that he was in favor of it. I want to tell you. Im from st. Louis. Im a jewish st. Louisn. And two of my grandparents and two of my greatgrandparents are buried in the cemetery that was vandaliz vandalized. This is threatening. This is scary. But to put the blame at someone who theres no proof hes to blame is a problem. What do you say to that alan . I say he has a special responsibility for two reasons. First hes the president s. Second he has somebody whos his chief of staff who has in fact said he came from an organization that was a spokesperson for the altright. We know that a lot of people from the altright praise the election of donald trump. Therefore he has an obligation to get up there and say i dont want your support. If youre an antisemite, i dont want you supporting me. So im critical of what he said but im not as critical as this tiny little Fringe Organization thats getting so much publicity now, the Anne Frank Center for Mutual Respect that nobody ever heard of until today. And that is not representative of the Jewish Community. And he went way, way overboard. This is not the most antisemitic administration in modern history. President roosevelt, Franklin Roosevelts administration was far more antisemitic. He purposely put antisemiites in the state department to keep jews out. So lets keep this in perspective and lets not give 15 minutes of fame to an organization nobody ever heard of because hes willing to go over the top and condemn donald trump for doing something that was a good thing to do. Fred, the question is is steve bannon behind the president s what people think is tonedeaf message or messaging on jewish issues . Is he putting forward antisemitic messages, do you think . I dont know that theres antisemitic messages per se, but i think it gives a kind of comfort to that. And thats why what the president did today i think was a good start. But its very important to make clear that that has no place in this administration, that antisemitism should get a fullthroated kind of rejection. What do you think about that, david . Look, im a conservative republican who voted for hillary. I am not a supporter of this president. I dont think hes good for america. But if were going to complain about him, lets complain about things that are real. You cant produce any specific evidence of antisemitism. Alan was right. This fake Holocaust Organization that said he had done grotesque acts of antisemitism. He didnt list any because there arent any. I think thats right. But i think he can do more. First of all, i think the Justice Department should establish a task force to vigorously investigate all these phone calls that are coming in to see if any of them will turn real. But second, look, i think the democrats are going to create a problem for themselves tomorrow or this week. If they pick Keith Ellison to head the Democratic National committee, a man who had close associations with farrakhan and then he didnt even recognize that he was antisemitic, now, to his credit ellison tweeted something today that supported trump saying what he did. But its too little too late. I think the democrats have to be very careful about not encouraging the kind of bigotry from their hard left just as the republicans have to be careful not to encourage it from their hard right. Heres what Keith Ellison hes running to lead, as alan said, the democratic party. He said why has it it taken donald trump so long to even sigh the word antisemitis snm perhaps its something to do with placating his base. You know, thats easy do say. But howe about him placating his base . His base is hard left people on college campuses. I want to hear ellison condemn antisemitism on college camus puss hasnt he apologized for his remarks thats easy too. He has to condemn his base. He has to go after people on the left. Thats what takes courage and thats what i see lacking on both sides, courage. Don, when donald trump answers questions, he meanders, he talks about this or that, and all the complaints about he refuses to condemn are hes asked the question and he talks about everything. This is not a focused president. And to use that as evidence that hes got some kind of agenda is just not fair. There has been look, i think the point don, i think the point here is not whether he is an antisemite or has done anything antisemitic, its that it should be an easy thing to criticize, to condemn. Racism should be an easy thing to condemn. And thats whats being looked for. Hey, ive got a quick minute here, alan. I specifically wanted to get your response to this, to Milo Yiannopoulos and what has happened to him the last couple days because he was a darling of conservatives until yesterday and today. Well, you know, he supported free speech and he was the darling of conservatives because hes being banned on college campuses. And then the conservatives actually listened to what he had to say and it was pretty outrageous. I dont think he should have been canceled. I dont think you cancel speakers. But i certainly wouldnt invite him based on his speech to come and speak anywhere where i was. He was outrageous views. And if he wants to have a soapbox or a blog, fine, but no university has an obligation to invite him. But nobody should cancel. That sounds too much like censorship. It also sounds like conservatives who were supporting him didnt necessarily do their homework. Its all out there on the internet, what he said. All you have to do is look for it. Thats right. Okay. Thank you, alan. Thank you, david. Thank you, fred. Fascinating conversation. Ill have you all back. Well see you next time. When we come back, Congressional Republicans are getting an earful from angry constituents at town halls across the country but President Trump says its all the fault of activists.
