CNNW Crossfire May 5, 2014

Surprising details are emerging about the air traffic mess over Southern California last week and a spy plane known for cold war fights over russia was apparently the culprit. Lets bring in our aviation correspondent rene marsh. What are you learning . Last week we talked about the flights delayed, diverted, some canceled at lax, third Busiest Airport saw more than 100 delays. According to u. S. Officials, faas computers, they were overwhelmed by the flight data of this u. S. Spy plane. So the question that comes, how did a spy plane, you know, essentially, its flight plan create a problem with the Computer System . Well, two things happened. Number one, this spy plane had to input a lot. Numerous way points. Way points are different points its going to hit throughout its flight path. It inputted many of them. That coupled with an outage for the communications and radar system, those two things colliding together, it created a mess for people who were trying to get from point a from point b so we saw the problems because without those Computer Systems essentially, theyre not able to safely space out the aircraft that are in the air. Out of abundance of caution, they made sure all of these flights were grounded or not taking off while they dealt with that problem. It flies at a very, very high altitude. Heres a question, could this happen again . If all of those circumstances were exactly the way they were last week, in a short answer, yes, it could. The faa, right now we know theyre working on trying to get a fix so this doesnt happen again. Again, if the circumstances are the same, it could very well happen again. That altitude is, what, 50,000, 60,000 feet, right . They fly extremely high well above commercial air traffic. About 60,000 to 70,000. Wow. U2 has a long, long history. Rene, thanks very much with the update. Lets hope it doesnt happen again because it cause the lots of disruptions. Remember, always follow us on twitter. Hope you do. Tweet me wolfblitzer. Always tweet the show cnnsitroom. Join us again tomorrow right here the situation room. Watch us live, of course, or, or dvr the show so you wont miss a moment. Has it for me. Thanks very much for watching. Im wolf blitzer in washington. Lets step into the crossfire now with Newt Gingrich and van jones. Wolf, with todays strong new poll numbers i think its too early for republicans to start relaxing about this fall. You got that right. You just ask president romney about that. The debates going to start right now. Tonight on crossfire, as a republican wave heads for washington in 2014, president obama stirs trouble for 2016. Hillary had to dodge a flying shoe at a press conference. On the left, van jones. On the right, Newt Gingrich. In the crossfire, Ted Strickland, a onetime democratic governor of ohio. And former republican president ial candidate rick santorum. The author of blue collar conservatives. How much trouble is ahead for democrats . Are republicans their own worst enemy . Tonight, on crossfire. Welcome to crossfire. Im Newt Gingrich on the right. Im van jones on the left. In crossfire tonight we have two big voices for each party. Now, look, the republicans have just drooling over todays brand new poll numbers. They include some of these numbers that just got released by cnn. The gop looks like its edging out democrats on a generic ballot, 46 to 45 . Scary remembrances of 2010. Now the president s Approval Rating remains stubbornly stuck at 43 . Now, everybody sitting there thinking, though, that 2014 is going to be a simple replay of 2010 needs to remember one thing. Were democrats, and we remember 2010, too. Weve learned our lessons and let me just say weve made a few adjustments. So, republicans may have big momentum. The Koch Brothers may have given them big money, but weve got a big base and know how to use big data to find and deliver our vote. We just elected a democratic governor in virginia. Dont forget about that. So dont count your chickens or your house and senate seats too early, newt. Well, i would say you also have big fantasies and big hopes for things that aint going to happen. Were going to get to that in just a minute. In the crossfire democratic former governor Ted Strickland, former governor of ohio and someone i served with and republican rick santorum, former senator from pennsylvania who ran for president in 2012. Who i also serve with. He published a new book blue collar conservatives. Ted, let me start with you because i think its, you know, in a sense, you came into office in 2006 as governor on george bushs tidal wave collapse then in 2010 you had this huge mountain of tidal wave as obama collapse. Youve seen these waves get started. My sense is that reality is beginning to overwhelm rhetoric and the democrats do, in fact, have a challenge in the next five months. Im curious from your perspective, you know, whats your reaction to the wave you see beginning to build . Well, i agree with you, newt. The republicans should not celebrate too soon because things can change politically very, very rapidly and my prediction is that over the next five, six months, that the polls will go up and down and this race, these races have yet to be decided. I dont concede anything to the republicans. Even control of the United States senate. Now, winning control of the house, thats going to be really difficult. Ill concede that point, but i think the democrats can hold the senate. And speaking of the senate, senator santorum, you guys technically should already have the senate, but you dont because you keep nominating people who have these extreme views, many of which you agree with that cant get elected. Is whats your response . Dont you agree folks like yourselves, extreme conservativ conservatives, i love you personally, real extreme views. Arent you keeping your party in the minority . I think you are. I think the extreme views are on your side of the table, not my side of the table. Extreme views of believing in lower taxes, less government, more freedom. Thats extreme in your world. I think most americans share those. Youre right. A lot is what candidates are nominated. We have to nominate good candidates. Give the tea party credit. The round of Tea Party Candidates that were seeing this time is a lot better than what weve seen in the past. And that bodes well for republicans that were going to have strong candidates for these seats. If we do have strong candidates for these seats, i think the problem that the democrats have right now, which is failures on all fronts, national security, obamacare, the economy, growth, et cetera, i think is going to really come up and bite them at election time. Do you agree with this . Listen, thanks for letting me break in here. The fact is the Republican Party is so fractured, and especially those who would be president are so diverse in their points of view. Its going to be, i think, impossible for the Republican Party republicans are the Big Ten Party because we have a lot of diverse views as opposed to the monolithic party which only has one point of view. Rick, those diverse views are contrary to the views of most americans. Most americans want fair taxes, they want jobs. They want choice. They want education. They want unemployment extended. They want equal pay for equal work. Ted democrats are on the right side with the American People. Explain this to me, then. Everything you just said, you have poll after poll coming out that at a minimum show that the democrats are on defense, that president obama has lost support, et cetera. In addition, if you look at the senate races in state after state where romney carried the state, louisiana, arkansas, montana, alaska, just to pick a few, would you go in there and say to that candidate, you know, youre an incumbent democrat, stand firmly right next to barack obama. Two of you can win. Or would you say to them, you know, in this state given the current mood, maybe you ought to run as an independent and forget who the president is. Well, i think every candidates got to decide how they run, what message they take. Let me tell you, if i were running in ohio, and ohio is one of those critical swing states, i would be supporting obamacare because millions of people now have access to health care that newt, they were without health care. They were without so would you encourage kay hagan and others to show up with the a lot of these democrats now wont even show up with i mean, would you say to them, you ought to have courage, stand right there next to the president and say, im a proud obama democrat . Well, i dont want to tell kay hagan or anyone else how to run for office, but i believe the president has given this country something that weve needed for decades. And thats a comprehensive system of Health Care Coverage that now prevents Insurance Companies from denying care for preexisting conditions, allows millions of young people to stay on their parents policies. You know, these are good things. 8 million americans agree with the governor. Now, im sure that you at this point now, 8 Million People have signed up are finally in favor of Insurance Companies not being able to dupe or deny people. Half of them lost insurance because of obamacare in the first place and had to find an alternative insurance. Many of those folks are ending up on medicaid instead of private insurance which they dont want to be at. Running i will agree with you on this that running against the administration, running against the failure of obamacare and the bad economy, that only should be step one. We do need i know newt will back me up because he was a Firm Believer in this and thats why 1994, we need a positive agenda. Theres been an area that we have failed. Its not painting that positive picture. So, so, positive agenda. Rand paul who now seems to be everywhere. Hes the frontrunner in your party. You agree with his ideas . Are you going to support rand paul . Look, as i said before, theres diversity in the Republican Party. Speaking of diversity, now you have rand paul, your frontrunner. There he is with Rupert Murdoch at the kentucky derby. Is this the new face of the Republican Party . Is this your leader . Not my leader, i can tell you that for sure. His father and i had disagreements during the last campaign. If a libertarian like him becomes leader of the Republican Party, gets the nomination, will you vote for him . I dont think that will happen. The Republican Party is not a libertarian party. Its a conservative party. It will nominate a conservative, not a libertarian. Rick, youve been doing good things. Youve been talking about blue collar workers. Yes, sir, i have. Thats good. My understanding is you support increasing the minimum wage. I voted for minimum wage increases when in the house of representatives as i did when in the senate. I believe a dollar increase in the minimum wage would make sense. Thats not what the president is doing. President is trying to push forward a living wage, trying to dramatically jack up the minimum wage to a point it would dramatically impact the cost of labor and put people out of work. We need a more modest increase. Were going to come back to that in a minute. In a moment, ill share with you Hillary Clintons real problem for 2015. And, no, it isnt benghazi. We also invite you to test your memory by taking todays crossfire quiz. How many contests did Hillary Clinton win during the race for the democratic nomination in 2008 . Is it 17, 20, or 23 . Well have the answer when we get back. Weve never sold a house before. agent ill walk you guys through every step. There are a lot of buyers for a house like yours. husband thats good to know. How did i know . Well, i didnt really. See, i figured low testosterone would decrease my sex drive. But when i started losing energy and became moody. Thats when i had an honest conversation with my doctor. We discussed all the symptoms. Then he gave me some blood tests. Showed it was low t. Thats it. It was a number not just me. [ male announcer ] today, men with low t have androgel 1. 62 testosterone gel. The 1 prescribed topical testosterone replacement therapy, increases testosterone when used daily. Women and children should avoid contact with application sites. Discontinue androgel and call your doctor if you see unexpected signs of early puberty in a child, or signs in a woman, which may include changes in body hair or a large increase in acne, possibly due to accidental exposure. Men with Breast Cancer or who have or might have prostate cancer, and women who are or may become pregnant or are breastfeeding, should not use androgel. Serious side effects include worsening of an enlarged prostate, possible increased risk of prostate cancer, lower sperm count, swelling of ankles, feet, or body, enlarged or painful breasts, problems breathing during sleep, and blood clots in the legs. Tell your doctor about your medical conditions and medications, especially insulin, corticosteroids, or medicines to decrease blood clotting. So. What do men do when a numbers too low . Turn it up [ male announcer ] in a clinical study, over 80 of treated men had their t levels restored to normal. Talk to your doctor about all your symptoms. Get the blood tests. Change your number. Turn it up. Androgel 1. 62 . Welcome back. Now, the answer to our crossfire quiz, Hillary Clinton won 23 contests during the 2008 primaries compared to 34 for barack obama. I think a tough primary like that made him a stronger candidate. Democrats would be smart to make sure they have a real primary in 2016 and stop hillarys coronation. Hillary clinton is a great celebrity, but if you look at her record as secretary of state, shes fundamentally endangered america. Some are fixated on benghazi, but id argue the crisis in ukraine is much worse. We can thank hillarys socalled russian reset for the chaos we see today. Take a look. We worked hard to get the right russian word. You think we got it . You got to wrong. I got it wrong. You know, that was the Russian Foreign minister laughing with her. I personally believe they were laughing about rather different things. And i think that this particular scene will be the most devastating campaign to come in 2016, after all, if that was a reset, we sure cant afford very many of them by a president Hillary Clinton. In the crossfire tonight, Ted Strickland, rick santorum. Its a practical matter because youve been through a lot of campaigns. Dont you think it actually would be better for the democrats to have a serious primary fight and have some kind of real contest rather than to allow the republicans to totally dominate the space for eight or nine months . Ill answer that question, newt. I want to remind you that your president george w. Bush looked into putins heart and saw this soul and apparently liked what he saw. Now, in regard to the primary for the democratic president ial nomination, there will be a primary. Whether or not there will be a serious primary i think is questionable at this point because Hillary Clinton is very strong. Shes strong among the democrats. Shes also strong with independents. I think shell be strong with some republicans. So do you think the party will be better to have a serious primary fight . If it can be avoided, i think that would be good for the party. It will help us conserve resources. But i do believe the contest between Hillary Clinton and president barack obama was good for both of them. I think it strengthened barack obama, but Hillary Clinton i dont think needs the seasoning of a tough primary because shes been through it before and i think shes already ready. Her record as secretary of state and a complete debacle. You look at one area of the world where the United States is stronger. You mention russia. Thats a classic example. You know, she was the one who was involved in the start 2 treaty, again, looking back we gave huge advantages to the russians in that. A reset to try to help them. Are you saying if youre president of the United States you would not reach out to the russians like george w. Bush did and Hillary Clinton did and barack obama did . It was wrong to try . There its wrong to give away strategic advantages, yes. What strategic advantage did the United States give away . 101 disadvantage in Tactical Nuclear weapons. Are you afraid the russians are going to nuke us . Is that what youre saying . Contrary to what the president said, the russians believe we have to get a signoff from the russians to move forward with Missile Defense. These are serious issues about protecting ourself and our allies. Hillary clinton is going to have to account for the deficiencies in the treaty. A significant question. Youre not afraid of the potential use of Nuclear Weapons . Im not afraid the russians are going to use Nuclear Weapons. I never heard you talk about crimea until they did it. I never heard anybody talk about crimea. Nobody was afraid of russian aggression two, three years ago but we created a vacuum of opportunity. Rick, we have the Strongest Military on the face of gods earth. Is there any question about that . Russia knows that and the rest of the world knows that. Thats not the point. The point is whether we have whats the point then . Point is let me just disagree. There is no usable American Military do you want us to go there with military force . No. Of course, you dont. We are the strongest. Are you saying we are not the Strongest Military thats not relevant, because no one was suggesting we were going to use moment power. But youre suggesting we do. There are other forms of power than military power. What are you talking about . Be specific. For example well, lets use one military example. When we send signals to the russians, which we did. We arent going to defend and stand by our treaty, allies, and in the case of ukraine, in the case of poland and the czechs what about georgia and george bush being president . I agree with you on that, i think he made mistakes there, but on the issue of poland and czech, right from the beginning of his administration, he said were not going to give Missile Defense systems to them. We made it clear we werent going to stand by our obligations with ukraine. This is a wonderful talking point. We dont have a legal obligation. Ukraine is not a part of nato. We are doing what i think the American People want us to do. Youre saying the agreement bill clinton signed isnt worth the paper it was written on . I want you guys at home to weigh in. Were going to come back and finish off, but i want you to answer in, would a tough primary fight make Hillary Clinton a stronger or weaker candidate . Use the hash tag stronger or weaker. Im outraged in one state, the party of lincoln, are actually talking about ses seeding from the union that lincoln saved. When we get back. Narrator these are the skater kid whoa narrator that got torture tested by teenagers and cried out for help. From the surprised designers. Who came to the rescue with a brilliant fix male designer i love it narrator which created thousands of new customers for the tennis shoes that got torture tested by teenagers. The internet of everything is changing manufacturing. Is your Network Ready . train horn vo wherever our trains go, the economy comes to life. Norfolk southern. One line, infinite possibilities. Honestly, the offseason isnt ive got a lot to do. Thats why i got my surface. Its great for watching game film and drawing up plays. Its got onenote, so i can stay on top of my todo list, which has been absolutely absurd since the big game. With skype, its just really easy to stay in touch with the kids i work with. Alright, russell you are good to go alright, fellas. Alright, russ. Back to work now its time for our outrages of the day. Im outraged by a growing liberal fascism on campuses. Over the weekend, it forced former secretary of state Condoleezza Rice to cancel her planned commencement address at rutgers university. Another university surrendered to pressure groups and cancels plans to honor a degree to a somali woman. But the real outrage is an elite media that would have been screaming if right wing groups had done this to a somali woman and an africanamerican woman, and yet they have been overwhelmingly silent. Thats the outrage. You were governor, would you have tried to get a Public University to actually honor its commitment . You know, newt, when i was in congress, i voted president four times, i know exactly why i voted president four times. One time was when said something deemed antisemitic at a university and the congress voted to condemn him for saying that. I think as individual members, we had the right to condemn that speech, but as a congress of the United States, we did not have a right to condemn the speech of a free american, and i would agree with you about these other matters. What do you think . I experienced this myself. I got boycotted at commencement addresses and was asked to not give a commencement address. This was at st. Joes university. It turned out when i did give the commencement, they asked me to leave and i said, no. If you want to disinvite me, they gave the opportunity for anybody who wanted to lead before my speech, if you want to leave, you can leave. You know who left . Four students out of 1,000 and threequarters of the faculty. That tells you where the problem is, its not the students. Im frankly a little disappointed that governor Chris Christie did not do anything to stand up to the rutgers faculty, who are paid by the taxpayers of new jersey. Well, i want to give my outrage. Youre concerned about free speech, im concerned about nutty speech. Heres a question for you, is the party of lincoln, who saved the union, now having second thoughts about this whole one nation united thing . Could be. The wisconsin Republican Party took two outrageous voice votes over the weekend. One resolution would have affirmed a states right to secede from the union. Another asserted that individual states can nullify laws like obamacare. Fortunately, both resolutions actually lost, but it is ridiculous in this day and age that republicans are even debating ideas like this. States cannot secede from the union, period. Remember the civil war . Thought we resolved that. Nor can states nullify our federal laws. In fact, the last people who suggested that they could were the segregationi isissegregatio have some republicans turning against dr. King and abraham lincoln. To me, thats outrageous. So. Lets check on our fire back results, i do agree it would be outrageous if ever passed. Would a tough democratic primary fight make Hillary Clinton a stronger or weaker candidate in 2016 . Right now 75 of you say stronger, 30 say weaker. Im with the 70 . Well, i want to see a good primary myself. I want to thank Ted Strickland and rick santorum. The debates going to continue online at cnn. Com crossfire, as well as on facebook and twitter. By the way, i dont know what youre doing for lunch tomorrow or breakfast, but at 12 30 eastern, youre going to get a chance to debate with me and s. E. Cupp in a live video chat.
