Eight people are dead and at least seven others injured outside dallas, texas. The victims of a murderous rampage at an outlet mall as a sunny, saturday afternoon, Family Shopping Trip became an all too familiar scene these days in america of carnage. I never imagined in a hundred years i would be thrust into the position of being the First Responder on the site to take care of people. The first girl i walked up to was crouched down covering her head in the bushes. I felt for her pulse. Pulled her head to the side. She had no face. And she had no face. The Good Samaritan also tried to help a mother who was killed while trying to protect her child with her body. So when i rolled the mother over he came out. I asked him, are you okay . He said, my mom is hurt. My moms hurt. I didnt traumatize him anymore. I put him around the corner and sat him down. He was covered head to toe like somebody poured blood on him. Reporter the allen, Texas Shooter is dead, killed police say by a local officer at the mall who was there on an unrelated call and heard the shots and confronted the shooter. Photos obtained by cnn show what appears to be the gunman in black body armor with an ar style rifle on the ground. Officials still havent confirmed anything about the shooters weapon, name, identity, possible motive, how long he was shooting people before he was stopped. Officials refuse to answer questions at a press conference last night. A striking lack of accountability to members of the public for whom they work. Members of the public who are shocked and grieving and fearful for their own safety. These leaders always seem to have prayers not so much answers. Joining us now is a texas lawmaker who knows Gun Tragedies all too well. He is the State Senator who represents uvalde, texas, roland gutierrez. Senator, thanks for joining us, unfortunately, again, you represent uvalde the scene of the Robb Elementary School shooting that killed 21 people last year almost all of them children. Your reaction once again to scenes of horror from a mass shooting once again in texas . Thank you, jake. First off, that gentleman that you just had, that footage, hell never be able to take those images from his mind. Ive seen hundreds of hours of body cam of what happened in uvalde. As much as you dont want people to see that in america, you know, what happens, literally, their face is gone. Ive seen two images like that in the Uvalde Victims where the little girls faces are just gone. The rest of the children, the bodies riddled, damaged, mangled like you cant believe. People need to really wake up. I mean, wake up to whats happening here. It is almost it has almost become some normal event for everybody. This is happening in your communities. It can happen anywhere in the United States. Certainly it is happening a tremendous amount in texas where Republican Leaders have just allowed people to run free with ar15s and any gun they can get their hands on. It is very sad where were at right now. Honestly nobody in the news media should do anything that goes against the wishes of a family. But do you think by censoring these images, by keeping them from the American People, we in the news media are doing a disservice to the public whom we serve . I think that certainly families need to be part of that decision. That said, i had a still photo in my file that i wanted to show to members of the texas senate and walk around with because i was so disgusted in their ability to do anything and have bills on the senate floor about common sense gun safety solutions. I ended up shredding that photo because i didnt think it was appropriate. I didnt think i needed it wasnt fair to that family whose little girl had died in such a horrific way and i had not asked them. As you know i signed a nondisclosure agreement, jake, to not divulge or distribute that information. But on the senate floor i felt that people should see these images, one of those leaders in texas told me, roland, there is a reason we dont look at the body cam footage. Jake, ive seen hundreds of hours. I had to see it because i needed to see the Police Failure that happened in uvalde. We were lucky yesterday. Imagine that. Nine people dead and the representative from that area says, oh, the police acted. It could have been worse. I dont know how many times i need to hear that. How many times do we need to hear that . You are supporting raising the minimum age for gun purchases to 21 years old, strengthening background checks, raising a red flag law that would hopefully keep weapons out of the hands of people who are a danger to themselves or others. Is there anything you think could have prevented this . Law enforcement hasnt been generous with the details yet. We dont know the age of the person. Ive seen images on the internet this was an ar15. I cant confirm that yet. That is the other distinction here in texas. You look at tennessee, california, chicago, every yao he vent thats happened every event that happened over the last year and we get the information almost immediately within two hours. We are told who the person is, what kind of gun, age, so on and so on. And here in texas here we are yet again at another incident where we are waiting a day because i would imagine theyre scared to tell us it was an ar15. We already pretty much know that. We are in a situation in in this state as if your a he living in Communist Russia the government and people like them and the Law Enforcement agencies refuse to tell us the truth as to what is going on here. Is likely to breach the debt limit in early june. Joining me now to discuss the chairman of the Senate JudiciaryCommittee Dick Durbin of illinois. We have so much to talk about. Obviously lets start with the horrific news out of texas, eight People Killed after a gunman opened fire at a shopping center. Congress passed the first significant Gun Legislation in decades after the uvalde shooting. It is still obviously far short of what you think is needed. Do you think there is any appetite for any more potential bipartisan efforts to build on the law, perhaps expand the Red Flag Laws to keep guns out of the hands of people who are a danger to themselves or others, or is the message to americans who are tired of living like this simply that thats it. There is Nothing Congress is going to do . There is something more that america can do. It is called an election. If people across america are fed up with these Mass Shootings and killings and the terrible things that are happening even to our children as a result of it, theyre going to vote accordingly. We need to have that kind of revolution in thinking across america that this is unacceptable. This was not dictated by the constitution. It is a Point Of View and position of political position which makes no sense when it comes to the safety of america. Lets turn to the u. S. Supreme court, which is an area youve been focused on a lot in the last few weeks. Justice Clarence Thomas accepted years of free luxury trips from a gop donor, sold real estate to him, accepted free rent from him for his mother, allowed him to pay for his grand nephews private School Tuition much of this not disclosed at all. We also learned from the Washington Post that Justice Thomas wife accepted Tens Of Thousands of hidden payments from a Conservative Judicial Activist Leonard Leo who has been very instrumental in shaping the court. Some of your fellow democrats on capitol hill say this seems to go beyond ethical lapses and rises to the level of corrupt behavior. Is that a word you would use, corrupt . Well, i can tell you that the conclusion most people would reach is that this tangled web around justice Clarence Thomas just gets worse and worse by the day. I dont know what is going to come up next. I thought i heard it all. But disclosures about his activities just embarrasses me. The question is whether it embarrasses the Supreme Court and the Chief Justice. Chief Justice Roberts has the power in his hands to change this first thing tomorrow morning. He could announce a Code Of Conduct for the court that finally means something. He could announce the court will be subject to at least the minimal standards that apply to all other federal judges. This is the roberts court. History is going to judge him by the decision he makes on this. He has the power to make the difference. You said Justice Thomas actions call into question his objectivity when it comes to future cases. I understand this stuff should have been disclosed. It is pretty difficult to argue it shouldnt have been. But can you point to any specific action you think Justice Thomas has taken on the court that you think was influenced by any of this . Of course you can Connect The Dots and draw your own conclusions but when you have leonard leos organization sending money to thomas family, instructing Kellyanne Conway to make sure you dont disclose the justices wifes name in the process though money is going to her, you have the organization sending the money filing an amicus brief in the shelby case on voting rights, you have the votes 54. Connect the dots and say wait a minute that stinks. That sort of thing shouldnt be happening at the highest court in america. It destroys the integrity of the court. Weve seen other justices including sotomayor and gorsuch vote in the way that was good for the Publishing Company that paid them millions of dollars for their autobiographies. This is something that goes beyond Justice Thomas, right . This should be something all of the justices recuse if they have a reason to do so and all of the justices disclose everything. I dont sense any momentum on the court from any of the justices not just thomas. I keep calling on chief Justice Roberts to make a move and Say Something and solve this problem. He has the power to do it for the roberts court. Other justices can speak out as well. I will tell you, i am blind to the political or judicial philosophy of the judge. They should all be living by the standards that the rest of government lives by in terms of disclosure and avoiding conflicts of interest. So because of the separation of powers i believe you are not willing to subpoena the Chief Justice john roberts. You have indicated it is unlikely youll be able to pass any legislation that would impose an ethics code on the court, and youve said you dont think the Justice Department should investigate Justice Thomas actions. In essence arent you kind of throwing up your hands and saying the Supreme Court isnt really accountable to anybody but themselves . There is nothing you can do even though you are the chairman of the Senate Judiciary committee . Not at all, jake. Let me tell you the bottom line is this. Everything is on the table. Day after day, week after week, more and more disclosures about Justice Thomas. We cannot ignore them. The thing well do first obviously is gather the evidence. The information we need to draw our conclusions. I am not ruling out anything. I say the judicial conference which has received some information from the
