Died while shoveling snow. Heavy snow is causing major problems for driver. In nebraska two people died in car dozens on slick roads, and the storm is snarling air travel all across the United States. More than 3500 flights were canceled today. That according to flightaware. Com. In boston its snowing now 1 to 2 inches an hour in areas around the city. It could get up to a foot of additional snow its making driving conditions pretty treacherous. Brian todd is driving just north of the city whats it like up there, brian . Reporter wolf its very treacherous, and it gets worse just about every hour. Whats interesting about this storm is even though its less volume than last weeks storm last week they had over two feet this week maybe its between 10 and 14 inches predicted overall. Were in a moving vehicle on a side road just off the interestate, off interstate 93 south. Were going to pull over and show you from my camera go out the dash camera were going to pull over and show you what some of the road crews and motorists are up against, as we pull over here. You can see out my dash cam, theres a depot where theyre stage staging from vehicle from. This is a staging area. One of the things they are running into. Visibility is really back. The vblt were told is worse. Weve been talking to road crews all day. They say visibility is a lot worse than it was, even though theres less this week than last. Another issue, where to put the snow . Theres really nowhere to go on the roads. If you get stuck, if you get in a jam and think youre going to get stranded theres really no place to get pulled over. This is what the police are telling us they dont want people to do. We also just ran into someone who was trying to avoid someone coming in couldnt avoid them ran into a snowbank instead. Theres just nowhere to go. If you think you need to pull over theres nowhere to go. Theyre telling people if you think you are having problems on the road get completely off the interstate. It will complicate matters for the snowplow crews. Massachusetts state officials, wolf tell us they have 3,000 vehicles on the right right now, spreaders, but as you can see, its still coming down at a rate faster than they this clear it. Thats a problem as we head into the even are you familiar hours. Assist theres more snow on the way. Brian, be careful. As brian just said massachusetts this week is getting a lot more snow on the heels of last weeks history storm. Peter, boston already has declared a snow emergency. Whats it like now coming on the heels you what you went there on a week ago. Itsing a challenge. Visibility has been awful simply because of the rate of snow. Are you telling people to stay off the roads . I know schools are closed today. Whats the latest on that front . Right, across the state, most schools have taken the day off. Take advantage of public transportation. This morning as commute really want that bad. I think a lot of people decided to take a snow day, maybe recovering from staying up late watching the super bowl but nonetheless, we hope this afternoon come the commute, its not a disaster only because i think the number of vehicles on the road will not be your normal afternoon commute. A quick question. Did you get most of last weeks cleanup done . Not 100 . Were still working late into yesterday afternoon making every effort to get ready for this snow. I know the city of boston is scrambling because theyre planning on have been a duck boat parade through the downtown of boston. Boston is strong as we all know. Lets see what they can do. Congratulations on the patriots super bowl win, by the way. Okay. Ill take all the credit. Its not just the need getting hid heart. Martin savidge is joining us from his hometown of cleveland, how how. Give us an update. As a matter of fact it should be improving. The storm is actually proving away from us. Its been here dumped about 8 to 10 inches but its the wind thats proven to be brutal. Wind thats blastic directly out of the east. E difficult by the drifting and made different by the fact its still snowing. With temperatures this cold the salt is not as effective as it usually is. Aarons are open but many flights delayed or canceled and on top of that just getting around on the streets, even on foot is extremely difficult. We thought it was going to stop but around noon that is parent is not the case. The snow is still coming down the wind is still blowing. Its still a very difficult day here in the midwest, especially in northeast ohio. The good news is the folks in cleveland, lieu the foix in my hometown of buffalo know how to deal with. Still ahead, new reports that the United States may start Arming Ukrainian rebels. That i can a look at this. The airport of donestsk our Nick Peyton Walsh is on the scene. Later. Republican president ial hopeful Mike Huckabee making head lines again, were going to talk about that whats going on in iowa getting closer to the Iowa Caucuses. A lot of politics happens here in the United States. Rma. Checking your credit score is for chumps. I have great credit. How do you know . Duh. You know those change, right . Tattoos dont change. That puts jim at a greater risk of stroke. For years, jims medicine tied him to a monthly trip to the clinic to get his blood tested. But now, with onceaday xarelto®, jims on the move. Jims doctor recommended xarelto®. Like warfarin, xarelto® is proven effective to reduce afibrelated stroke risk. But xarelto® is the first and only onceaday prescription blood thinner for patients with afib not caused by a heart valve problem that doesnt require regular blood monitoring. So jims not tied to that monitoring routine. Gps proceed to the designated route. Not today. For patients currently well managed on warfarin, there is limited information on how xarelto® and warfarin compare in reducing the risk of stroke. Xarelto® is just one pill a day taken with the evening meal. Plus, with no known dietary restrictions jim can eat the Healthy Foods he likes. Dont stop taking xarelto® rivaroxaban, unless your doctor tells you to. While taking xarelto®, you may bruise more easily and it may take longer for bleeding to stop. Xarelto® may increase your risk of bleeding if you take certain medicines. Xarelto® can cause serious bleeding and in rare cases, may be fatal. Get help right away if you develop unexpected bleeding, unusual bruising, or tingling. If you have had spinal anesthesia while on xarelto® watch for back pain or any nerve or muscle related signs or symptoms. Com. The unrest in yemen spilling over into neighboring countries, including saudi arabia. The kingdom is now strengthening its borders, trying to keep out smugglers f we have an exclusive report from the saudi yemen border. Reporter Saudi Border Police on the gun. Right next to yemen. Were racing alongside the border fence. Its rare access. Yemen is falling apart. And saudi arabia is on the front line of the fallout. We just spotted a group of smugglers right over there. Theyre walking towards the border. We just raced up here along the border fence with these gun trucks to try to catch them. No one knows who they are, terrorists gun runners, drug meals. They just brought us down to the one guy they captured that we saw on camera there. He tells me hes poor you sneaking into saudi to work illegally for the past 20 years, but recently because of the security improvements its become much harder. Late in the afternoon weve come to another base and they told us they captured some smugglers, some cat smugglers. These are children it turns out the judgest is ten, the second time hes been caught smuggling in the stimulant of cat. He says he gets 50 a trip from drug barons. So what do you do with them . The answer is send him back to yemen. It turns out, though their tiny haul is a drop in the ocean. Look at this pile of cat right here. Huge. In the past three months he tells me along the 500mile border more than half a million tons seized. Street value close to 100 million. Back on the chase with the gun trucks is the fleeing men are caught. They say they are poor yemenis, on the way to earn money, or some say saudi jail is better than freedom in yemen. How do you know if any of these men arent connected with some terrorist group . He tell me they get fingerprinted. If they have a record the police will know right away. As the sun sets off to a nearby police station. Minutes later, more young drug mules are apprehended. This day, this night, toech, next week the desert kingdom threatened at its borders. Intensified in Eastern Ukraine in recent weeks. So has the rhetoric between the United States and russia. The u. S. Secretary of state john kerry heads to kiev later this week. Meanwhile, the increased fighting has decimated several towns in the east. Our own Nick Paton Walsh is joining us now, in a dangerous part of ukraine. First, nick tell us where you are and what youve been through. I understand parts of that area including the airport have basically been leveled. Reporter well we have just come back near the airport, an area not accessed by the west media since its destruction. I was there in that airport seven, eight months ago, we saw the fighting begin for it. To go back today and see quite haz what happened. It was held for a long time, but the shells has torn that building to shred. We saw the bod why is of some ukrainian soldiers who the separatists claim were left behind in the past couple weeks. Its desperately terrifying place to stan. All around you, seven or ace, simply while we were there. They are still get, and more such a sad sight, wolf because that building had been a symbol of hope for Eastern Ukraine. It was build for a football championship the european cusp of 2012. Now its in absolute shall receipts. Frankly many are wonder, given the level of viewants when they wolf . I know wonderful rebel leaders, nick says he wants to have a 100,000man army ready to fight. Youve spoken to experts there on all sides. How realistic is that goal . Well i think its hyperbole, really. Its about the separatists trying to sound more confidence. Nato and the western ukraine, theyve got a love the of russian army actually fighting within that are ranks. But to resource that from military age males within the population has hollowed out by the vile million stroke is very, very few in number. Land often in civilian areas, like we saw on friday but Alexander Zakharchenko is increasingly angry in his rhetoric. Blaming for not adequately resourced people to talk to them in minsk. But the real concern is that the violence hay escalated, one key village being encircled, artillery landing the whole time people sheltering underground. And the broader ambition theyre telling me is to move across the entire region. They claim significant amounts of territory. The fear is where does it actually stop wolf . Be careful over there. Nick paton walsh on the scene for us in ukraine. Still ahead, well get into american politics. The more controversial comments on samesex marriage raising questions about Mike Huckabees strategy. Im wolf blitzer reporting from washington. Lets get to politics here in the United States. Right now we are just under a year away from the Iowa Caucuses. If they were held today, the wisconsin governor a brandnew poll show scott walker would likely be the winner in the latest iowa poll. Without mitt romney in the context Governor Walker tops the list. Senator rand paul is at second. Mike huckabee is at 13 in third place. Over the weekend huckabee who is also a former fox news host stirred up emotions with a statement when he was asked about samesex marriage. He was on cnn with our own dana baisch on state of the union he referred to it as a lifestyle and also made they comparisons. People can be my friends who have lifestyles that are not necessarily my lifestyles. I dont shut people out of my circle our out of my life because they have a different point of view. I dont drink alcohol, but gosh a lot of my friends, maybe most of them do. I dont use profanity, but believe me ive got a lot of friends who do. Some people really like Classical Music and ballet and opera, its not my cup of tea. Id like to think theres room in american for people who have different points of view without screaming, shouting and wanting to shut their businesses down. Lets bring in our political strategist anna navarrein anavarreonavarro, and gloria borger. He won the way caucuses back in 2008 obviously has a strong following. Whats the strategy now . Theres a shortit were strategy to try to win the Iowa Caucuses again, and when you when you look at polls that have been taken in iowa recently 37 of people said they he reflected their values. Thats a shortterm strategy but when you look at a larger strategy if he were by some chance but come the nominee, look at where the American Public is right now. 74 of democrats you nour for gay marriage. 58 of independent voters are. If youre a republican candidate, and youve got to appeal to those independent voters to win a general election you have to talk very difficultly about being gay as a lifestyle choice . That is not something that independents or democrats would go to at all. I dont know if you saw the interview i did. For him this is a religious issue, a biblical issue and basically makes the points his views on Marriage Equality samesex marriage are the exact view that is president obama had back in 2008 when he was running for president s. We know that president obama has changed his views dramatically over the past six years. I think hes making a valid point. We dont need to shut them out from the debate. We dont need to shut them out from their lives. It is a biblical issue for some people. Some people are not going to change their minds on it. I think that part of the interview, those are valid, legitimate points. The problem comes when he starts making these types of compare so that and calling it a lifestyle choice. That comes across as very offensive to many homosexual and paem who, like me who have gay friends and understand its not a lifestyle choice. I use profanity, thats my lifestyle choice i drink, thats my lifestyle choice. Being heterosexual is not a lifestyle choice. It is what i am. I think thats what most gay people feel they are, and where he runs into trouble. But this has been a consistent approach by Mike Huckabee. We have seen him picking a fight with beyonce and jayz, and now we see him doing this and were talking about him. So its not a bad shortterm approach as sglorgloria mentioned. Jeb bush has said and warned the Republican Party a being perceived as antigay even though he didnt endorse gay marriage, but said its an issue you could to the states but he warned if the party wants to win, it could be negative about families it cant be negative about gay marriage, either. I think huckabees strategy is geared toward iowa South Carolina but not the general election. Anna hold on many. Gloria just said she thought that Mike Huckabees chances of winning were minute i school. That was the word she used. Do you agree that huckabees chances of winning are minute i school . I think he would do well in iowa. I think hes got a track record there. Hes got appeal and hes got a folksy approach. I expect him to be spending a lot of time in iowa. I wouldnt be sprys if he does quite well in iowa. The question is what is his longterm strategy and does he have the ability to sustain a campaign for the long term . Its looking more and more like the republican primary will be a longterm process. And scott walker in the new poll is up on top. He did well a week ago at that event in iowa. And what you see now, again we cant say it enough is that there is a split in the republican peter between the social conservatives and socalled establishment. With mitt romney now out of it youve got a fight between jeb bush and chris christie. Jeb bush i think youll see also talk when his traditional values and try and let the American Public know he was more conservative as the governor of florida than we remember and i think he just hired romneys former iowa strategist to work for him, perhaps even run his campaign. Only a few months away from that first republican president ial debate in iowa as well. Guys weve got to leave it there. Thank you very much anna and gloria. Both nations caught up in the brutality of eye sick. The terrorist group has released the video of the apparent beheading of kenji goto. They offered to let the pilot go in exchange for the release of a female terrorist thats been held for about ten years, but jordan is demanding proof that their pilot is still alive. Joining us is a columnest for bloomberg view. And peterer bergen. Jordan is saying well do the swap but we want proof of life. Isis has not been negotiating in good faith for any of them. When they asked for money for james foley, it wasnt serious. The 200 million wasnt serious. So unfortunately i dont think theyre negotiating in good faith about this. You dont think theyre willing to make the exchange. Theres no evidence that the pilot is alive. Jordan will not move this woman to the border for possible exchange unless they first have hard roof of life evidence. You agree . Absolutely. And we have the video of what they believe was the jordanian intel gen agency they claimed to have killed another official right as these negotiations are going on. The message to the jordanians is clear, in other words, theyre raising the stakes. Not backing off their policy. This pilot, this jordanian f16 Fighter Pilot is a hero in jordan right now. He comes from a very distinguished family. The King Abdullah and others know who by the way is coming to washington later this week everyone apparently knows who this pilot is. Im told by officials who are pretty knowledgeable that if they kill in isis kills this jordanian pilot, then all hell is going to break loose thats correct jordan is really going to retaliate against isis in ways that are not necessarily typical of the way jordan behaves. Have you heard that . I havent. The jordanians they have a way clearly first off, they have a way into isis that other countries have not had so far. One of the things about hostage negotiations youre gathering intelligence their location their interests, and they may put that to good use. What do you think . Im hear that jordan would be very, very not only angry, but they would be very vindictive, they will seek revenge and isis will pay a price. Its interesting, that phrase pay a price was used by both jordanian and japanese officials. Both of these conditions are being put to the test. Both of them have mixed feeling about being involved. Its not uniform in these societies, but now that this issue has come to the front of both of these culture, they have to make a decision. Both governments are pledging to double down, but thats the beginning, not the end of the debate though theyll have to start to think about what that means. They dont have the interests in that yet. Are they willing to commit the resources of going against isis . What does that mean for the militaries . Thats what theyll be poring over in the coming weeks. Peter, youve had heard all this buzz coming from u. S. Officials, others that what eye says is suffering, losing a lot of their commander, they lost cobanco khobani, is all that buzz justified . Its all true but then look at the flip side. We have the head of special Operations Command say at a conference yesterday that there have been 19,000 foreign fighters coming in also relike estimates there are 1,000 recruits coming in every month. And 1,000 fighters keep coming in thats sort of a draw. If you look at the situation in syria, yes, they may have loss kobani but thats a very small town. Its a hard picture to draw in syria, but they are maintaining grown or perhaps even gaining ground in syria. Weve seen elements, groups in libya who killed the American Contractor in tripoli last week. Is isis losing or on the defense . Its clear the Obama Administration feels that the successes have been significant. They feel that isis has suffered yes, theres a gap between the political people in the white house and the military intelligence people on the ground who believe that isis is expandsing in sinai, in libya, in many other cunning around the world. The president with an interview with Fareed Zakaria said we have to tame a limitedsh and not play whack amole with countries around the world. The fear is well be neglecting these other areas t. Seth rogin and peter bergen, thank you very much. Ice at issue is the president s refusal to use the phrase islamic fa nat sim, islamic extremism. Well get that when we come back. President obama is coming under fire for refusing to label the fight against terrorism, war on radical islam. He made that point again in an interview with cnns Fareed Zakaria. Lindsey graham says hes bothered by the fact that you wont admit that we are in a religious war. There are others who say the white house takes pains to avoid using the words islamic terrorism. My question is are we in a war with radical islam . I think the way to understand this is there is an element growing out of muslim communities in certain parts of the world that have perverted the religion, have embraced anilistic violent, almost medieval interpretation of islam, and theyre doing damage in a lot of countries around the world. But it is absolutely true that i reject a notion that somehow that creates a religious war, because the overwhelming majority of muslims reject that interpretation of islam. They dont even recognize it as being islam, and i think that for us to be successful in fighting this scourge, its very important for us to align ourselves with the 99. 9 muslims who are looking for the same thing we are looking for order, peace, prosperity. And so you know i dont quibble with they disagree with the president. Listen to what some had to say. Im a big critic of the president not using islamic extremists terrorism. Hes the obama world leader that doesnt, by the way. They have embraced the religious doctrine that requires them compelled by god to purify their religion to kill all moderate muslims or people who dont agree with them within the faith to destroy every other religion and when our president doesnt acknowledge that this is a religiousdriven war, its going to be very hard to win it. Even some democrats are baffled by the president s word. Well im upset that the president and the white house, whether its today or yesterday or tomorrow is not actually saying this is a war that the islamic extremists are posing against the United States and against the west and we recognize who our enemy is and come up with a strategy to defeat that enemy. All right. Lets bring in michael smerconish. Hes the host of summermerconish that hosts here on cnn on saturday morning. Also karen finney is joining us. What do you think about the president refusal to call it radical islam . I wish he would do it. Im not entirely satisfied with what i heard from lindsey graham. To me that suggests that we, too, are acting through faith. What faith would it be . I dont want to call it a religious war that were involved with but i think trarns transparency would be required. Karen, you support the president s position right . I do. I understand where he comes from. We had a group of religious leaders yesterday talking about their concerns about their depiction of muslims and the Islamic State in this context. And, you know Kareem Abdul Jabbar said it the best. That he is to people that are muslims, what we see what terrorists are doing, its not just a perversion they dont recognize it as their religion. When what they are doing, they are terrorists right, they are extremists and terrorists and i think what we do when we do that we create a wedge between those muslims and followers of islam who are peace loving want to be a part of the communities where they live but feel that theres sort of this blanket, i think, put over the whole religion even though people are trying to say they are extremists. I think a lot of people within the faith feel very prejudiced against. Michael, what do you say to that . I say to that that when theres crime in the United States, we want to know who did it and why did they do it what was the motivation . Will we have mass killings in the United States . Always a part of the story is to report on exactly what the motivation was and it feels to me dishonest by omission if we dont explain what exactly the motivation is in these instances. I think Something Else that i would offer to karen, which is it puts pressure on the 99. 9 who are not acting in a perversion of the islamic faith to make that clear. I mean it makes them have some skin in the game and calls upon them to say, hey, they dont speak for us and we certainly dont act according zeely. Michael, heres the problem i have with that. By that comment, youre assuming that the 99. 9 doesnt feel already some degree of responsibility and why should they . I mean i am a christian. The kkk considers themselves a christian organization. I dont consider themselves a christian organization. I dont consider them following the teachings of jesus in any shape or form. When we talk about islam look, many, many Muslim Leaders have come forward numerous times to denounce that activity and it doesnt get as much attention as maybe the extremists. Maybe we need to have a better balance in that. Go ahead, michael. I think we would be kreecreating an exception. For all incidents of crime and mass killings well tell you the particular story. But when it comes to this particular of sphere of mayhem we wont tell you the whole story. I dont think that islam this perversion of islam is deserving of that exclusion. I guess what im saying those of us who dont know much about the islamic faith, we see it as a perversion of islam. The people who are in the faith are saying its not actually a perversion, its not even part of our faith. I feel to some degree that we need to trust the people who actually know the religion and know the faith and maybe come up with a different kind of label. What do you say to congresswoman gabbard of hawaii she says you have to define your enemy. And the first step in winning a war, if youre going against isis or anyone else you have to define who they are. Otherwise, youre not going to know who you are fighting. Again, i think there might be a different definition that we could come up with that does not engage sort of the religion of islam, again, from those who are in the faith who say, this isnt us. This isnt a representation of our faith. You know i worked with a group of young people who are muslim wanting to run for office and the level of racism that they faced and prejudice because these were kids that wanted to serve their country. All right. Last word very quickly, michael. David cameron came to the white house last month and on this issue i prefer his approach to it than president obamas. He called it out for what it is. All right. The debate over whether to use the phrase radical islam clearly will continue. Thanks guys very very much. Thats it for me. Ill be back at 5 00 p. M. In the situation room for our international viewers. Amanpour is up next. Brooke baldwin will start right after a quick break. 3rd and 3. 58 seconds on the clock, what am i thinking about . Foreign markets. Asian debt that recognizes the shift in the global economy.
