Theres a little musical interlude right now. Its official, the Republican National convention here in cleveland is getting down to business right now. Were here at the Convention Hall with all of our analysts and our guests. And you can see them with us right here. Lets talk a little bit about what we anticipate during the course of this day. Trina pearson is here. She is the spokeswoman for the donald Trump Campaign. How does it feel to be here at this moment when this convention has officially been called to order . I think its fantastic. The campaign is really excited. Mr. Trumps excited. Weve been able to achieve something that no ones really ever done before outside the system with an insurgent candidate whos been controversial at times but still managed to captivate enough vote to break the record in the republican primary. And here we are for him to accept the nomination. Theres going to be some surprises tonight, or do we basically know whats going to happen . His wife, melanias going to be speaking. Thats the big speaker. Is ha going to introduce her . He may. This is a tough event, so i think anythings possible. This is not going to be your typical convention. He wants to entertain people. He wants to bring in more viewers. And again, as you mentioned opening the show, this is going to be an event for people who may be on the fence or want to know what mr. Trump is really about, without that media filter. And this is what were going to find. Kevin madden is one of our cnn contributors, a republican strategist, not excited about donald trump being the republican nominee. But its official now, this campaign, this convention is down to business. Right. Yeah, and i think katrina makes a good point. The focus of this campaign, i think first and foremost, has to be addressed, that unity issue. There are a lot of republicans out there who are here today in attendance, but many are conflicted. So, i think addressing those that are here in the room, but also those millions around the country right now, thats going to be key to positioning donald trump for success in the general election. Mike shields, our cnn delegate analyst, former Republican National committee chief of staff, has he managed to bring that Republican Base around . Has he united the party going forward, at least enough to potentially get himself elected . Because as you well know, a lot of republicans are not very happy with this nominee. Well, the polling would say no, he still has work to do. And i think what youre watching here with the delegates on the floor, this is the business of the convention. This is where the unbind vote would have taken place that would have threatened his candidacy when we thought we would have an open convention. Thats over. So, weve mechanically gotten to the point of bringing everyone together. There is still work to do to bring people together. Picking mike pence is part of that. There is still work to do and they could do it from the stage this week. Bacarri sellers, Hillary Clinton supporters, youre here in Enemy Territory right now. What do you think of the mike pence, from a democratic perspective, from the Democratic Party perspective, what do you think of mike pence as the running mate . Well, i think mike pence doesnt put any fear in any of the hearts of democrats. Could free Hillary Clinton up to choose tom choose Thomas Vilsack and not take pressure from any of them. But inside the convention, its a lot of excitement, but outside, once we go outside the security perimeter, we see how tense it is. We understand we had minneapolis, baton rouge, the cop shooting in dallas and another in baton rouge. So, donald trump has a moment. This is his moment. This convention is his moment to show that not only can he describe that the world is in chaos, but show that he can be a unifier. Im not sure if he can do that, but well see this week. Sara murray has been covering the Trump Campaign for almost a year. Melania trump is going to be speaking tonight, the wife of donald trump. They really want, the republicans and the viewers out there, and there will be millions of them, to get her perspective on who her husband is. Right. And in some ways, they learned a lesson from romney in 2012, which is its great to have all these speakers designed to make your candidate seem softer and have glossy videos, but that doesnt happen on prime time. It doesnt happen on television. So, thats why youll have a trump speaking every night in prime time to try to soften those edges. I was just talking to Paul Manafort who said when we asked melania if she wanted to do this, we sort of expected her to say no. She doesnt really like the campaign trail, and i have been out with donald trump for over a year and we dont see her much, but he said she jumped at the opportunity. Its similar to how ann romney felt in 2012, where she just felt like people did not know the man that she knew privately, and she wanted to take that to the stage and make it clear that i know my husband best, let me tell you what hes like. And were expecting a lot of that in fr melania tonight. He will be speaking tonight, ron brownstein, melania trump, the wife, but the kids are going to be speaking tuesday, wednesday and thursday, including tiffany, the youngest daughter who just graduated from the university of pennsylvania. Shes going to be speaking as well about her dad. And the sons and ivanka, the daughter, theyll all be speaking, giving a personal reflection of who their father is. People prioritized by [ inaudible ] more than to drive a policy message. First of all, you cant game say what hes done to this point. This is an enormous achievement to be standing here from a year ago, from where he started, to be the nominee. But he is facing a difficult environment. Had he has the highest negatives of any general election nominee from either party, and the key one is that 60 of americans in the abc Washington Post poll this week say he is not qualified to be president. If they cant deal with that this week, whatever else they do, theyre going to be facing an uphill climb the rest way. Mark reston, our cnn politics executive editor, there will be some other surprises here. Donald trump is a showman. He wants to make this Republican Convention a bit different. He is a showman, and he has done very well over as a Reality Television star. I think, though, what he said he was going to do and what hes going to deliver are two different things. The guest that we anticipated he would have here are probably not going to be here from what we can tell from what they have sent us out. Tonight well see scott baio, who was a star back in the 70s and the 80s. Hes considered a big star. An lpga golfer who in her own right is a great athlete, but again, not known by a lot of people. So not really the alist alist that we thought he would bring. What were you vaying . I think he was supporting actor in the 70s and 80s. But iconic nonetheless. What ron was talking about, theres obviously a risk voters see with a President Trump potentially. Hes got speak to the risk, saying to voters who are persuadable, its worth taking the risk because of the environment were in. So, i think it starts with him. This is an effort to ratchet up this opposition to Hillary Clinton with the benghazi theme, national security, to talk about the environment around the world and offer him as a kind of strong man, lawandorder kind of solution. There are big speeches thursday night when he accepts the nomination, but tonight hell presumably be speaking as well. Katrina, stand by. Im going to come back to you in a moment. Hes going like, i dont remember our children and grandchildren will look back at this time. At the choices we are about to make. The goals we will strive for. The principles we will live by. And we need to make sure that they can be proud of us. Im Hillary Clinton and i approve this message. The Republican Convention here in cleveland is now officially opened against the backdrop, though, of racial tensions. Black lives matter protests, ambush killings of Police Officers. One of the themes of the Convention Going forward is making america one again. Thats the focus thursday. And aggression woman Marsha Blackburn of tennessee is one of the prime time speakers thursday night. She is joining us now live. Congresswoman, thanks very much for joining us. Sure. Youll be speaking thursday night during the 8 00 p. M. Eastern hour. Thats a good time slot, prime time for you. Make america one again. What is your message . What does that mean . My message is going to be unity, looking at the things that have made this country great. That should be what unites us. Opportunity. You know, gop is the great opportunity party, and that is part of the message that we have to communicate this week. You know, theres a new poll that came out, a cnn orc poll, and it asks the question, will the Republican Party unite, will unite by november . Back in may, only 48 thought so. Now its up to 68 . But 68 still isnt, you know, a large number among republicans, is it . Well, you know, i think its better than the democrats numbers. And when you look at well, the democrats seem to be uniting now that Bernie Sanders has endorsed Hillary Clinton. Well, heres the thing, though. When you look at the turnout in the primaries, republican turnout is up, democratic turnout is down. We realize that its an opportunity for us to get our message out and focus on the things people are talking about national security, jobs and economic security, and also for women, a big issue is retirement security. So, its a great week for us to turn that focus. And i think that youre going to see that number continue to increase. Was mike pence, the indiana governor, your first choice to be the running mate . Mike pence is a great choice. And the first choice for me was to say who does mr. Trump think will balance him best on this ticket and help us win . And whomever that is, thats who the nominee should be. Do you worry, though that they disagree on some really sensitive issues like not at all. Like trade. Not at all. The war in iraq, some of these issues. Heres the reason why its not a concern, because youre always going to disagree with individuals, and nobody is going to agree with you 100 . I like the fact that they are not in lockstep on everything, because it allows for that discussion and debate. How do you reach consensus and a great resolution to solving problems . You have people around you who are not yes men but who bring a new set of ideas and a diversity of opinion to the debate. I want to play a clip. This is donald trump this morning speaking about president obama and president obamas reaction to the killings of those Police Officers in baton rouge yesterday. Listen to this. I watched the president , and sometimes the words are okay, but you just look at the body language. Theres something going on. Look, theres something going on. And the words are not often okay, by the way. What does that mean, theres something going on . Theres just bad feeling and a lot of bad feeling about him. I see it, too. All right, he says theres something going on. Hes implying that theres something sinister going on with the president of the United States. What was your interpretation . I couldnt hear all of clip he said the president showed body language was wasnt appropriate. Yeah. I think what people want to see from the president , theyre waiting to see, is for him to say, look, i am standing with our police. Im supporting the police. Im supporting our local elected officials. And we have to get this under control. And i did not hear the clip that was playing very well. Musics kind of loud back here. Its loud here. But what people want is leadership on this issue. Tell us, mr. President , what youre going to do, how youre going to support our local police. Theyre going through some technical issues, making sure everythings just perfect for the prime time first night thats about to unfold. Well have much more on the convention, donald trump, the politics of all of this, but there is other Important News were following right now. I want to turn to baton rouge, louisiana. Thats a city still in shock over the killing of three Police Office officers, 72yearold montrell jackson, 41yearold matthew gerald, and 45yearold brad garafola. Just moments ago, Hillary Clinton speaking to members of the naacp at their conference in cincinnati, addressed the killings. And today there are people all across america sick over what happened in baton rouge and in dallas, but also fearful that the murders of Police Officers means that vital questions about policecommunity relations will go unanswered. Now, that is a reasonable fear, isnt it . And all of this tells us very powerfully that we have to change. Many Police Officers across the country agree with that. But it can only happen if we build trust and accountability. And lets admit it, that gets hard eer every time someone els is killed. Cnn is learning more about the killer and the attack. The killer, a 29yearold former u. S. Marine. Sources telling us the Video Evidence right now is pointing to a meticulously planned attack. Brian todd is following the investigation for us. Hes joining us live from baton rouge right now. Brian, youre at the scene of that shooting. Give us some new information that youre learning. Reporter wolf, sources telling us they do believe at this point this was a carefully planned confrontation by the shooter. This is where the standoff occurred and ended. This is the gas station here in baton rouge where right here, a makeshift memorial has been set up to the fallen officers. People placing flowers, cards and balloons here. One gentleman just placed this bouquet of roses here just a moment ago. What really strikes you about this scene, wolf, is how dangerous this was and how just incredibly catastrophic is conceivably could have been with even much more loss of life. Why . Because look how busy this section is. Our photojournalist, tony, is going to move with me this way over here. This is an incredibly busy section of baton rouge. Look at how congested the traffic here. Now, it is midday on a monday. Early sunday morning at about 8 40, it was probably considerably less busy, but still pretty congested here. Youve got a Large Shopping Center over here, businesses lining up and down this street, traffic everywhere. And of course, we believe, according to sources, that this general area is where the confrontation occurred, where the standoff ended with the shooter, gavin long, being killed, but also with three officers being killed. Wolf, sources telling us today that they believe at least at this moment that he planned to lure the officers to him, that he knew that if he was walking along this area with his ar15style Assault Rifle wearing all black and wearing a mask that someone would call 911. They believe he tried to lure the officers here in a kind of ambush situation, and that thats what he did. He might have even called 911 himself, wolf. So, again when you get a sense of this area and just how congested it is, its Pretty Amazing that more people were not hurt or killed in this incident. All right, brian. Welcome back to the Republican National convention here in cleveland. The mayor of cleveland, a democrat, frank jackson, is speaking right now. Interesting that he has decided to welcome all these republicans to his beautiful city. The republican governor of ohio has decided he is not going to be attending this convention. Thats caused quite a bit of stir among republican circles, but this is the democratic mayor of cleveland whos speaking right now. Hillary clintons email controversy, the benghazi killings, will almost certainly be major lines of attack during this Republican Convention. So, how will the democrats respond . What else will they be doing this week . Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman schultz is the chair of the democratic National Committee. She happens to be here in cleveland with me right now. Just a coincidence. Youre supposed to be in philadelphia getting ready for the democratic convention, but you and a whole team from the dnc have come here to make Hillary Clintons case. Yes. The democratic National Committee and hillary for america have come for this entire week to the Republican National convention to make the case that everything youll hear on this stage, the American People know that we are better than this, better than the divisive, unqualified, unprepared, racist, bigoted rhetoric that youve heard from donald trump throughout this campaign. And were going to focus on making sure that we can draw that contrast leading into our Convention Next week. And the republicans, the rnc will be well represented in philadelphia next week. Im quite sure. This is a relatively recent tradition over the years. Democrats show up, like you, your team i went in 2012 as well. Yeah, and the republicans will be in philadelphia next week. So, how are you going to respond . Because were going to be hearing tonight a lot about benghazi, Hillary Clintons failures, Hillary Clintons failures in libya, Hillary Clintons failures with her private email server. Those are going to be major themes, theres no doubt about that. Well, what theres no doubt about, as i said, is that donald trump is the most divisive, bigoted, unprepared, unqualified major Party Candidate that has ever run and needs to get nowhere near the white house. And thats the contrast that were going to draw. Whatever is said on this stage tonight and through this week, donald trump cant run away from his horrific personal and business record. Hillary clintons, you know, numbers as far as honesty and trustworthiness, theyre not very good either. Donald trump has been bankrupted several times, has abandoned employees, has discriminated against his own employees, has caused thousands of students from Trump University to face Economic Hardship by his fraudulent university. The list goes on and on of donald trump and how hes cheated everyone hes ever dealt with. Presumably, benghazi, the emails, libya, other failures of Hillary Clinton will be major themes this week in cleveland. What will the major themes going against donald trump in philadelphia at the democratic Convention Next week . Well, were certainly going to outline why Hillary Clinton is the most qualified and prepared candidate for president of the United States that weve had, and that shes going to continue to help us move forward and help the middle class and build on the economic progress weve made, but that will be a stark contrast to the divisiveness, to donald trump, who has said throughout this campaign that he would ban an entire religion, preventing muslims from coming into the country. He began his campaign, wolf, if you remember, by declaring mexicans rapists and drug dealers. He said that he would consider developing a database to register muslims. I mean, this is a man who has really no concept of what american democracy or any concept of the constitution and fairness. Bernie sanders has come aboard. Hes endorsed Hillary Clinton. Yes. He says hes going to campaign for her. He wants to make sure that donald trump is not the next president of the United States, but a lot of the supporters are not yet on board. They have no great love, many of them say, for Hillary Clinton. Some of them saying theyre going to vote for a thirdParty Candidate or theyre not going to vote at all. Well, i think the overwhelming majority of our supporters of both Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders are coming together. We were thrilled to have senator sanders join us endorsing Hillary Clinton last week. His supporters are already being incorporated into our campaign as organizers and as Neighborhood Team leaders and field staff. And we are a united party. Well be united, unlike where here in cleveland you have the governor, and for example, none of my south Florida Republican colleagues are here. Im actually the only federal official from florida here in cleveland at the Republican National convention because my three colleagues had no interest in being anywhere near this convention or associating themselves with Donald Trumps toxic brand. A lot of republicans have decided they did wa decided they didnt want to attend, including governor kasich. And both former president s and republican nominees from recent times. A french Prosecutor Says the man responsible for killing 84 people in nice on bastille day searched for propaganda on the day of the attack but the interior minister says no ties have been established between the attacker and isis, no formal ties. Right now six people are in custody in connection with that terror attack. Were also watching the fallout in turkey after a failed military coup over the weekend. The violence killing ing 232 pe in turkey. More than 7,000 people suspected of having a role in that plot have been arrested. But of course it will take a parliamentary decision for that to take action in the form of a constitutional measure. So the leaders will have to come together, discuss it. All of a sudden the world is stunned friday when there was this coup. No one anticipated i dont think there was any intelligence suggesting a coup was about to take place. In april, about 275 military officers were from the courts were let out of jail, basically, for a previous coup, what they claimed was an attempt, what many said was not really an attempt. So you have all this turmoil within the military ranks and by constitution people forget this the turkish constitution says that the army is in charge of keeping islamism out of the government. And so there was all of this brewing turmoil, erdogan knew that he had to keep pushing back the army if he was going to continue down the path he was doing so there was a conflict stage. I think what you saw here was they felt that they were getting uncovered by intelligence and Police Agencies and felt that they had to move quickly. They being the and thousands of these coup plotters have been arrested. You just heard president erdogan saying hes not ruling out the possibility that some will be executed for their role in this attempted coup. Whats going to be the reaction among other nato allies, especially in europe, if theres executions . Well, theres already been a bit of turmoil over his comments saying if you bring back the Death Penalty you cant get in the eu, that would be impossible. I think what you saw there from the Prime Minister was the determination the president. Excuse me, yes, the president of the turkey, recep tayyip erdogan. This was his opportunity to clean out and have a military thats very proerdogan. For a while there was not so the plotters were more secular and so hes been targeting those more secular military officers for some time. What you saw was a reaction to that, didnt go went very badly. The biggest loser, wolf, is going to be maybe a secular turkey. What about the u. S. Military which relies on this nato ally, incirlik, the air base, its a launching pad for a lot of u. S. Air strikes against isis targets in syria and in iraq as well. I dont think thats going to go away. As a matter of fact, a lot of those operations have been kicked back in. Erdogan understands the value of having the United States there and attacking folks who, by the way, have also been responsible for suicide attacks in istanbul. So hell see the value in that.
