I think the republican nominee is unfit to serve as president. I said so last week, and he keeps on proving it. The notion that he would attack a gold star family that had made such extraordinary sacrifices on behalf of our country, the fact that he doesnt appear to have basic knowledge around critical issue issues in europe, in the middle east, in asia means that hes woefully unprepared to do this job. At the same time not very far away from the white house in northern virginia, donald trump p held a Campaign Event where he was given a gift from a veteran in the crowd. Something very nice just happened to me. A man came up to me and he handed me his purple heart. Now, i said to him, is that like the real one, or is that a copy . And he said, thats my real purple heart. I have such confidence in you. And i said, man, thats like big stuff. I always wanted to get the purple heart. This was much easier. Well talk more about the purple heart in a few moments but first donald trump also took a direct swipe at his democratic opponent over her latest fundraising numbers. She raised like 50 million or 60 million, and 20 people gave it. I think it was lets see. 20 people gave her 60 million in her fund. 60 million from 20 people. Im going to get a list of those 20 people. Oh, those 20 people, i want to find out who they are. I want to find out how many i know. I want to find out i want to find out how many i know. But ill tell you what, 20 people gave her 60 million. And thats what ive been saying, folks. Look, i know the game better than anybody. And the game is played that way. They own her. Joininging us now our national korcorrespondent jason carol who is covering the Trump Campaign and our White House Correspondent Michelle Kosinski at the white house. Michelle, president obama seems to have a lot to say about the republican nominee and the Republican Party. Listen to this clip as well. There has to be a point in which you say, this is not somebody i can support for president of the United States. Even if he purports to be be a member of my party. And the fact that that has not yet happened makes some of these denunciations ring hollow. I dont doubt their sincerity. I dont doubt that they were outraged about some of the statements that mr. Trump and his supporters made about the khan family. But there has to come a point at which you say somebody who makes those kinds of statements doesnt have the judgment, the temperame temperament, the understanding to occupy the most powerful position in the world. He was referring to those Republican Leaders, michelle, like Mitch Mcconnell, paul ryan, john mccain who were critical of his comments of the khan family but still have endorsed and support donald trump. Reporter right. Hes really calling them out. This was remarkable. This is the president feeling much freer especially in this setting, a press conference, to be much harsher about donald trump than weve heard. He was asked a very simple question, do you feel like his recent comments might make him unfit to serve as president . And president obama responded yes. But he didnt want to stoop there. He then unleashes this more than fiveminute stinging criticism, not just of recent things donald trump has said but of his candidacy as a whole. Calling into question his knowledge of domestic and Foreign Affairs of the constitution and the rule of law, calling into question his common sense and basic decency to use the words of president obama. And then he wanted to call out Republican Leadership as well as the Republican Party, saying, you know, if on a daily or a weekly basis if youre finding yourself having to denounce certain things that donald trump has said, why are you still endorsing him . President obama said, what does that say about the Republican Party if donald trump is your standard bearer . And he said, you know, at some point it gets to the point where you have to say enough. You look back to what president obama said during the Democratic National convention a week ago, and that was criticism of donald trump. That was remarkable because he was repeatedly using Donald Trumps name. But in that setting president obama seemed really conscious of making this historic speech, of using elegant language and concepts instead of direct, blunt criticism. And now in this kind of setting, were seeing the president do just that, wolf. Good point. You know, jason, donald trump has been under fire for the comments to the parents of the fallen soldier. Explain that purple heart moment that we just saw at the event that youre covering. Reporter well, it was interesting, wolf, to say the least. At one point donald trump talked about a man who came up to him outside before coming inside the venue and wanted him to hold his purple heart. And you heard donald trump at first asked if it was real. Then saying, i always wanted one of these. This way of getting it was much easier. Im paraphrasing there. But again, i think some people will let those comments theyll judge noermselves in terms of how those comments are perceived by certain people. Certainly here in the room it was perceived well. Outside the room i think it will be perceived in a much different way. And this once again speaks to what people in the gop are concerned about. Its Donald Trumps tone. He was obviously trying to pay the man a compliment, but in some ways i think most people are going to say he lost the moment in terms of how he turned what should have been a very emotional moment, a poignant moment and turned that by using that particular phrase in terms of, you know, i always wanted a purple heart, but this way of getting it is much, much easier. Once again, this points to critics who say they want donald trump to stick to Hillary Clintons record. They want him to stay focused on her. He did some of that here at the rally talking about how shes weak on the economy, weak on trade, weak on terrorim. I think he lost some of those critics though when he mentioned that moment about the purple heart recipient. Wolf . Jason carroll, thank you. Michelle kosinski, thanks to you as well. Let ales talk a little bit more about what we just heard from the president and from republican president ial nominee donald trump. Here with us our senior political reporter niamalika henderson. And Jackie Kucinich of the daily beast. Ed, let me get your opinion of what we just heard from the president. He was very, very blunt in saying that donald trump is unfit to be president. Woefully unprepared to deal with domestic and national security. I think its no surprise he finds him unqualified and is no fan of trump given their years of history. What i found notable is that hes now using the full trappings of the presidency to make this point, a foreign leader at his side at a white house podium, not in a ku Convention Hall, a Campaign Event but there being president , essentially, in a big way. And i think whats interesting, too, is he may have in essence boxed in republicans because at this point its if you break with trump some may accuse you of taking cues from the democratic president. But if you dont, of course, it could continue to cause damage for the party. I dont think most republicans are going to find my reason to break from trump to say theyre not voting for him or supporting him until it shows its affecting other races in a big way. So far theres no evidence of that necessarily. The president also said these republicans in a week or two find themselves criticizing various statements that Donald Trumps made, they have to come to grips. He said they have to reconsider their support for this republican nominee. He said their denunciations of donald trump every time he says something offcolor or controversial, they essentially ring hollow. He also hinted that this is damaging to the Republican Partys brand and it was in some ways different from what he said in his speech. He said essentially in his dnc speech that trump really didnt represent the real Republican Party and at this point hes saying, listen being arepublica youre tying yourself too closely to this candidate. I think ed is right. I doubt most republicans certainly those on the ballot in red states are going to come out and denounce trump and break with him and unendorse him. I think what the president and democrats are hoping is that republican voters, republican independent leaning voters will either stay home or vote for Hillary Clinton. And weve seen some of that. People like Sally Bradshaw who was a bush strategist says shell either likely not vote at all or vote for Hillary Clinton if its close in her state of florida. I think thats what theyre trying to stir up, democrats. Jackie, only a little while ago at his rally outside of washington in virginia donald trump made the case for himself, listen to this. Listen, even if people dont like me, they have to vote for me. They have no choice. Even if you dont, and you do like me, i hope. Even if you cant stand donald tru trump, you think donald trump is the worst, youre going to vote for me. You know why . Justices of the Supreme Court. The next president will nominate one or two maybe three Supreme Court justices. Thats his argument. Yeah. Im assuming by you he meant republicans which is whats happening right now particularly with leadership because people like Mitch Mcconnell theyre going to keep using that. You hear mike pence using that yesterday, saying and over the last couple of days sighing that roe v. Wade could be repealed if donald trump is president. Theyre going to keep hammering that because that is really the best argument they have right now particularly when you have donald trump going after sacred people like gold star families. Its the one thing they can keep falling back on. Think about the future. Think about who Hillary Clinton would appoint versus donldz trump. What did you think about the point he was making about Hillary Clintons fundraising . She had an impressive fund raising month. 63 million raised in july, which is her largest yet. The Campaign Said it raised 8 million essentially in the 24 hours after she spoke last thursday night. Thats a huge haul. That did not come from 20 people, as trump was alleging in that speech there, saying there were only 20 big donors who gave her all that money. It signals shes still able to raise it. Theres grat roots support coming her way now shes the official nominee. We believe that trump said yesterday he has 35. 8 million raised in july, which is far behind. Remember hes starting at a huge disadvantage so he can make this argument but bottom line is clinton has more money. He appears to be struggle to raise it though that isnt necessarily his final tally for the month. What was also extraordinary at this News Conference, pretty unusual, was the fact that the president of the United States said that the democratic nominee, the democratic Vice President ial nominee, of course donald trump, Bernie Sanders, theyre all wrong when it comes to the transpacific partnership. He says once the dust settles after the election in november hes going to roll up his sleeves, work with democrats and republicans to get that tpp passed during the lame duck session. Well see how Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren feel about that and the republicans as well in the lame duck session. This has been a real fight. Bernie sanders tried to get the democratic platform to reflect where a lot of the Democratic Party is, meaning theyre against the tpp. But its very hard for the party to go against this president on tpp. He sees it as part of his legacy. He looks at he argued this would lower tariffs and sort of expand exports from america and this is part of his asia pivot. But listen, well see if this happens. He says hes the president now. It doesnt matter where clinton and sanders are. You can only imagine how donald trump will sponld to that. I will say we talked to democrats at the convention saying this shouldnt necessarily come up the rest of this calendar year. At this point you have two nominees who dont like it. One will be president. Leave it to that person to re renegotiate the deal. The whole reason he was having the press conference was with the leader of sing apar was to build lastminute support for this. It doesnt seem to be there in either party. He basically said, remember, im still president of the United States. And speaking to the others, youre not president , im still president. Everyone, stay with us. Were going to have much more coming up. Its probably safe to say Donald Trumps very bad week just bott a little worse. Well tell you why. Plus, why trump says the system is working against him. At a Campaign Rally last hour, trump also took direct aim at the electoral process and at Hillary Clinton over the email controversy. Weve got to beat a dishonest machine, totally dishonest machine. You know, as an example, how hillary got away with what she got away with recently. How do you get away with it . Everybody thought, oh, wow, shes guilty. However, what she got away with was a disgrace, honestly. A disgrace to our country what she got away with. And who would think that that could have happened . And then on top of it she lies on sunday say, i was actually just fine. I did everything fine. And that was not said it was said very embarrassingly. Nobody could believe that happened. That whole thing was incredible. But we have to learn from it. Its a crooked system. Its a rigged system. Were running against a rigged system, and were running against a very dishonest media. Lets bring back our panel, niamalika henderson, ed okeefe and jackie kucinickucinich. When he says the system is rigged, what does he mean that the system is rigged . You know, i think he finds himself at a very difficult moment now, right . Hes had a real rough week with the gold star family, with the khan family. Hes doing terribly in the polls. And i think its part of his frustration. So this idea that everything is going against him, not only the media, the debates are probably rigged, too. And the entire system is rigged. I mean, this has been part of his identity. This idea that hes sort of the little guy going against the man and the big machine. So i think its just that. And i think cynics might say hes sort of setting himself up to have a story if he loses of a campaign in november, he can say, well, listen, this whole thing was rigged. Republicans didnt like me and everybody had the thul on the scale for Hillary Clinton. When you hear him say that, what do you hear . Hes setting the table for a loss. He did this in march ahead of the convention. Remember he claimed there would be chaos in cleveland. There wasnt much. He got nominated and he won. It wasnt anything nearly as bad as it could have been. Hes already said now that the election in november may be rigged. Listen, the media is not ignoring what mrs. Clinton said on sunday. She said this to chris wallace, as our Washington Post fact checker said in giving her pinocchio, she was selectively editing what the fbi director said about her use of a private email server. Wieland covering it. Well continue to cover it. The probable is she wasnt the one insulting the gold star family, he was. Thats why the attention is focused on him. I want to play a clip right now, the president suggesting that donald trump is unfit to be president of the United States. There have been republican president s with whom i disagreed, but i didnt have a doubt that they could function as president. I think i was right and mitt romney and john mccain were wrong on certain policy issues, but i never thought that they couldnt do the job. And had they won, i would have been disappointed, but i would have said to all americans, this is our president , and i know theyre going to abide by certain norms and rules and common sense, will observe basic decency, will have enough knowledge about Economic Policy and Foreign Policy and our constitutional traditions and rule of law that our government will work. And then well compete four years from now to try to win an election. But thats not the situation here. And thats not just my opinion. That is the opinion of many prominent republicans. There has to come a point at which you say enough. The point hes trying to make is that john mccain, mitt romney, they were fit to be president off the United States even though he disagreed on lots of policy issues with them. They were prepared to be president of the United States. He says donald trump is woefully unprepared. I mean, this is aimed at maybe some independents who might be teatoring, maybe some more liberal minded republicans who dont know if they can vote for donald trump. So by the president saying unfit and as ed said using the entire weight of the office there, surrounded by all the trappings of being president , really has some recess in answer that he doesnt have when he has on the campaign stump with his sleeves rolled up stumping for Hillary Clinton. Yeah, these are very, very strong words from the president. I dont know that hes gone that far before. And we havent seen this, a sitting president , that a candidate in the same office really wants to have out there. Remember gore didnt really want bill clinton out there in 2000. Romney and mccain didnt want bush out there either for them. So this is something different. And i think this is a preview of what queer going to see over this next 98 days. In our cnn orc poll, we asked Bernie Sanders supports which direction theyre likely to move now that hesut of the race. 70 said they would be supporting hilalary clinton. Only 3 said they would support donald trump. You see the numbers up there, jill stein 13 , gary johnson 10 . Those numbers surprise you, ed . No. I mean, we saw some evidence of sanders voters who said they might consider trump in the streets of philadelphia last week. It was minimal, not wide spresp. We saw more supporters for jill stein in the Convention Hall itself. Talking to a lot of sanders supporters, they said, we realize despite losing shes a far better president than trump would be. When trump says hell get sanders support hes, theres 3 . There was a moment at this donald trump rally that just occurred outside of washington in northern virginia. Watch this. In addition, both campaigns are having people sign promise postcards, the campaigns will then mail them out in the days before the election reminding people of their pledge to vote. Wolf . The letter goes on to say, we were heartened by your first instinct which was to not endorse mr. Trump. We respectfully request that you follow what we believe your heart is telling you and withdraw your endorsement of him now. Thank you, wolf, for your question. I have not received any response from the speaker, but i urge him to put country over party and withdraw his endorsement of donald trump now. During a News Conference just a little while ago, president obama also question why gop leaders are sticking by donald trump even after criticizing comments he has made. Listen to this. And the question i think that they have to ask themselves is, if you are repeatedly having to say in very strong terms that what he has said is unacceptable, why are you still endorsing him . What does this say about your party that this is your standard bearer . Youre a colonel in the u. S. Air force reserve. You did active duty. Whats your biggest complaint . Whats your biggest concern about donald trump . My biggest concern is that in november were not just electing a president. Were electing a commander in chief. And a president who proposes stupid laws, for example, such as banning muslims, congress can stop that or the courts will strike it down. There are checks and bambalance. But when a commander in chief decides to take action to defend america such as launching air strikes or god forbid launching a Nuclear First strike, that person needs to have tempt ramt, judgment and knowledge. Those are the checks and balances. Because congress is not involved in those issues as much, its very important that our commander in chief can be trusted. Donald trump fails all those lmtds of leadership. Why do you think he doesnt have the temperament to have his finger lets say on the Nuclear Button . Because he goes after anybody that goes under his skin, even a little bit, including gold star parents, the mother of a son who died serving our country. He plays footsie with russia. He praises americas enemies such as saddam hussein. And he has shown that he is incapable of having actual knowledge about the world. He didnt even know, for example, that russia invaded ukraine in 2014. Your letter says that trumps attack on the khan family whose son died in war in iraq dishonors all americans and in your words is an attack on america. So what impact do you think it will have on downballot candidates in the fight for control of the house an the senate . I think it will have a significant impact. Having served in active duty in the military, its been difficult for me to watch donald trump attacking our military say it its a disaster, attacking our veterans such as john mccain. But when he after parents of a son who died serving our country, it crossed all acceptable norms of human mraifr. And if speaker ryan does not withdraw his endorsement, then he owns it. Anyone who endorses donald trump endorses his vision of america, which is dividing us rather than strengthening us. We are stronger together. Thats what Hillary Clinton believes. Thats why shes going to win. Shes now up nine points on the poll . Shes definitely got a bump out of the democratic convention. He got a bump out of the republican convention. Lets see what happens down the road. As you know, the arizona senator john mccain, the republican nominee in 2008, hes been the folk us of some of trumps criticism. He issues a very strong rebuke saying trump when he went after the parents of that fallen american soldier, he said that trump disparaged a Fallen Soldiers parents. Those were his words. What do you think of senator mccains response . I respect senator mccain and what donald trump doesnt understand is that our military is great because it doesnt matter what color you are, who you love, or what religion you practice. All we care about is, can you do your duty to our nation with excellence . Captain khan went above and beyond his duty by telling his troops to stay back, walking ten steps forward and then a car blew up. That is the kind of sacrifice that should be be honored, not disparaged and donald trump by saying the words he said has shown americans that he is at heart a very cruel and intemperate person, someone who is unfit for president of the United States. Debbie wasserman schultz, the chair of the dnc, she resigned immediately after the democratic convention. So what prompted this resignation . Quite frankly, from what we can tell sounds like it is just getting started. But the dnc apparently is moving in the direction of a bit of a House Cleaning here and i think it needs to be made clear in the first place that amy deacy and the ceo has resigned. She has not been fired. We do know donna brazile, the cnn contributor, as well as the interim chair of the dnc who was brought in to replace Debbie Wasserman schultz is at the helm of all of this. They are trying to upright the ship, as it were, after the embarrassing episode that occurred right before the Democratic National committee when this allegation and appearance, if you will, wolf, of partiality on behalf of Debbie Wasserman schultz, appearing to try to help out Hillary Clinton, or at least being emimical to Bernie Sanders. It doesnt sound like amy deacys being fired, nonetheless we are told there is potential for other people to move on or have jobs changes somewhere.
