Give us an update on whats happening now. Trump tower has been a hotbed of activity. Were seeing many people come and go. Going inside for meetings that could become the very public, highprofile faces of the eventual trump administration. Earlier this morning, we saw general Michael Flynn go in to trump tower. He is a top contender for National Security adviser. We also know that Rudy Giuliani spent about an hour inside today. Kellyanne conway, trumps top adviser, saying that giuliani, just today, that he is the leading contender for a number of positions. We know according to sources thats everything from attorney general to secretary of department of homeland security, to secretary of state. Which we know according to sources is the position that Rudy Giuliani really is jockeying for. Trump also meeting one on one with South Carolina governor nikki haley today. We know that according to sources she is being considered for secretary of state as well. Notable of course, wolf, because she was a critic of trumps during the campaign. Wolf. Wahats the latest youre hearing about a time line for getting the cabinet at least in place . There are about 4,000 political appointments hes got to make between now and january 20th. Thats right. Many appointments to be made. Still a lot of decisions it sounds to be made as well. According to trump transition advisers, they tell me there is no arbitrary time line in place. That these decisions, the announcements will be made as soon as the decisions are made by donald trump. Notable that tomorrow, wolf, donald trump has called for a full meeting of his entire transition staff. Twohour meeting here at trump tower. So certainly this process at a stage where feels like there is a need to get everyone together at one table in one room. I think we can say certainly because of that meeting and because of the high profile comings and goings today, that this really has kicked into a higher gear, wolf. They clearly are working long hours, working very hard on all of this. All right, sunlen, thank you. Were also learning more how donald trump plans to handle immigration. Specifically whether he will enforce his proposed ban on muslim immigrants to the United States, at lead a temporary ban. That is what he said earlier, he modified that during the course of the campaign, saying he wants significant vetting of all immigrants to the United States. I want to bring in our justice correspondent pamela brown. Youre getting some new information. I spoke wolf to a person involved with president elect trumps immigration plan. Im told theyre developing a proposal to track immigrants traveling to the u. S. From highrisk countries and put those people in a database. The source says its similar to the program implemented after 9 11 which had higher scrutiny of people coming to the u. S. From countries that were considered a tear right threat. All those countries with the exception of north korea was muslim. That system was ended in 2011 because of proflying complaints. The source i spoke with said trumps team is basically looking to bring that back in a similar fashion. Requiring fingerprinting. Entering the persons personal information into a database and requiring that person to check in with federal immigration authorities every year as to their location. The source says the people put into this database would have to fit into a certain criteria. Not all people from these highrisk countries would be in it and the source did not specify which countries are looking at as considered high rick. Its a moving target, given the terrorist threat with isis and al qaeda. The person also said there are some muslim countries that are not being included in this current list by the trump team now. Well watch it very closely. He did modify his position on a temporary ban of muslims coming to the u. S. Throughout the campaign. Later he revised it. I asked this person whether that is something that an option that later looking at. Im told essentially the people working on this immigration plan are prepared for that. But that its highly unlikely that would happen, given how donald trump changed his rhetoric during the campaign. Im told, look, all options are on the table. These will all be presented once donald trump is officially in the white house. And then ultimately the decision will be up to him, wolf. Thanks very much for that, pamela brown reporting. Sean, thanks very much for joining us. Good afternoon, wolf, thanks for having me. You just heard pams report on emerging immigration ideas. Can you clarify whether or not there would be some sort of specific muslim registry, at least some trump supports . Not necessarily members of the Transition Team but some supporters have suggested that. I think right now the president elect and Vice President elect is focused on staffing their administration and setting forth agenda to be ready on the day he takes oath of office. Were more focused on the staff and making sure the staff is ready to enact that agenda. Were not going to get into specific policies at this time. Because immigration clearly was a central feature of the president elects campaign. Hes got very strong views. Is this a high he said in recent days since he was elected immigration is one of three major priorities at lead on his immediate agenda. It is. Hes got that, repealing obamacare and really focused on the economy and bringing back jobs. Hes got those are his three priorities. Thats what hes tasked his staff and the people that are going to subsequently fill out his cabinet and other senior positions with doing, drawing out those policies, making sure on day one he and his team are focused on that agenda. You understand muslimamericans, indeed, a lot of americans, are concerned about some sort of registry, something along those lines . Thats a sort of some concern, you understand that, right . I do. Again, i think if you listen to what the president elect has said starting on the night he accepted that call from secretary clinton ton his meeting with president obama, he has talked about making sure every american is taking part of his plan and that all of the lives of every american from one coast to another, his policies help lift all of them up. How close is the Transition Team to naming nominees for some of the top positions . Secretary of state, secretary of defense for example . Well, look at the people that have come in and out of this building. Sunlen serfaty went through part of them. Over and other again, were seeing some of the best and brightest. The most capable from Business Leaders to successful people if government to outsiders, to people like Henry Kissinger this morning. Someone hes known for a long time. Getting his ideas. People are drawn to donald trump right now. We had over 47,000 resumes. People want to be part of this administration. Youre seeing a number of these quality calibertype people come in and out, share their ideas with him, and then he is able to sit back and figure out who will be the bet people to enact that vision. I know hes consulting with Henry Kissinger now in his 90s. But the other people who are coming in, their very impressive governors, senators, others with a lot of experience. Are these people hes consulting with trying to get their input or are they potential cabinet members . I think its a combination of both. As up noyouve noted, kissinger wasnt here looking for an job but he was sharing his energy with the president elect. Theres general keen, mr. Smith, nikki haley, senator scott, sessions, all these individuals. The list goes on and on. Its a back and forth conversation. In some cases, mr. Trump has an idea of the way he things they could be part of his administration. In some cases, its multiple positions. In some cases, frankly, he respects them and wants to hear their ideas and opinions. What about the South Carolina governor nikki haley . Obviously very talented. Very intelligence. Very popular. Sources have told us shes being considered for secretary of state. She was a pretty harsh critic of donald trump during the early stage of the primaries. Later said she was supporting him, voting for him. But she has limited Foreign Policy credentials. Is she being considered a potential secretary of state . Belwell, first, i think whatu pointed out is right on. He wants to figure out whos the bet people to enact a vision of change. He will look at republicans, democrats, independent, people who voted for him, people who voted against him. As long as they are committed to bringing change to washington and making this country better. They can be part of this team. Thats all he cares about. So someone like Governor Haley who, as you pointed out, unbelievably talented and successful governor, hear her thank yous and thoughts and then figure out whether she is someone who can play a role. But no decisions have been made. When i hear you saying no hard feelings, the president elect is ready to move on, even if some these potential people who will serve in his administration said not such nice things about him or didnt support him, he wants the best people in there, right now, despite some hard feelings from the past, is that right . Thats absolutely right, wolf. His 100 commitment is to have the best Staff Administration to enact change. Doesnt matter to him what your Political Party was or where you stood in the primary. If you were the best person for that job, then he wants you as part of his team. Again, look at the caliber of people that have continued to come in and out of trump tower over the last 48 hours and will continue to come in and out and meet with him in the next coming weeks. Its unbelievable. Only a guy like donald trump could bring this level and this caliber of people to meet with him and to talk about how to enact real change. Because yesterday senator ted cruz of texas, he showed up there, he was a republican president ial candidate. They had some ugly words between the two them. Is he now being are ed for something . Again, im not going to get into whos being considered or not. What it is is an opportunity for mr. Trump to hear people, what their ideas, suggestions, thoughts are, about how to enact these real changes and policies. As you pointed out, senator cruz and others who ran against him, his goal is to make this country better. Thats it. Full stop. It doesnt matter what your party was, who you voted for. If you want to be part of change, you want to help enact and make this country better for every american, then youre welcome on this team. One final question, before i let you go, sean, Prime Minister abe of japan making a special visit to new york. He will be the first foreign leader to meet with the president elect. Tell us how that meeting came about. Well, mr. Trump has met with or spoken to, now, 32 World Leaders. President abe and him wanted to have an opportunity to meet privately. He will do that. But we recognize the fact there is only one president at a time. So they will have a bright meeting, discuss, get to know each other a little better, and then once he is sworn into office, continue to have foreign leaders come visit or he will visit them and really start he wanted to be ready on day one. Hed spoken on the phone with these 30plus other foreign leaders. The only one so far hes meeting facetoface later today is Prime Minister abe of japan, right . Thats correct. When they spoke on the phone earlier in the week, Prime Minister abe said, you know, id like to come other and say hi, is that how it happened . Well, im not going to get into the specifics of a private conversation but lets just say they thought it would be a good idea to meet. Theyre doing so privately because we continue to want to recognize that the United States can only have one president at a time. So theyll have this bright meeting tonight and then he will continue to talk to World Leaders on the phone. United states has one president , thats president obama right now. Yeah, which would be amazing given the fact given the history. Certainly have not been close allies to say the least. They wouldnt specify what exactly the role could be beffo mitt romney. So well see how those discussions go. Meetings will take place in new york or new jersey because i know trump is going to new jersey at some point. Right, so the person i spoke with that knew of the meeting wasnt able to say where it would exactly take place. As we know where donald trump gog goes in new jersey is not that far outside of new york city. You heard sean spicer say what happened in the past is the pat. He wants the best most qualified people now to serve in his cabinet. I think we are seeing that. I think abby and jeff can speak to this as well. Were start to see republicans come home but in a way of a realization trump is president now. I do think youre going to start to see more reaching out. So this is a big deal, you agree, if mitt romney four years ago, he was the president ial nominee, during the course of the last year, there were some ugly words exchanged between him and donald trump. If donald trump is now inviting him to meet with him and even thinking about offering him a major position, thats important. Right, there are few peoples would had such an antagonistic relationship with trump. Trump respond to mitt romney saying basically dont make this guy president and mitt romney saying i will do anything in my power to make sure hes not. For him to go to trump tower is a positive sign. It indicates a lot of republicans are coming to the conclusion that the best way to influence and shape this potential administration is from the inside, not from the outside. Theres that sense on capitol hill too they can sort of shape where trump goes with some of his priorities by basically saying, hey, were here to work with you, heres our version of the plan, and hope for the best. Jeff, Trump Inviting ted cruz, nikki haley, now mitt romney to come to trump tower to discuss possible jobs lets say, at least working together in a new administration. That sends a powerful signal. It does, regardless of who he ends up sort of bringing on board. Its easy when youre the winner to bring people in. There are also is the sense you can feel it in this town. This is a new moment here. People you know, this is what we do in the u. S. People come together. It will be fascinating to see if mitt romney would join a trump presidency. Would think an outside adviser is certainly more interesting. But nikki haley, so many republicans are fascinating by that choice today. Ive spoken to a couple South Carolina republicans who still say they dont believe this is all that possible. But theyre frankly not sure. Because no one knows what the dynamic would be with donald trump and nikki haley. A lot of these people have been throwing attacks and barbs from afar. Now we they sit down and meet, its a different situation. Keep your eye on that. That would be a fascinating development. What does it say about donald trump himself, that hes willing now not just to pick those most loyal to hi, his biggest supporter, those out front all of the time, but to reap och ouo other talented individuals . I think it says a lot. Well see bhat fewhat the futur and how he works with leaders in his own party, let alone democrats. I do think it says something, as jeff said. Were moving from this campaign of really nasty rhetoric to really the stark realization they need to govern. They have to govern. They are, you know, donald trump is the leader of the free world. I do think it says something about him. Says something about his advisers who are willing to try to broker these meetings and not just say we won, lets wall it off, the spoils are ours. You know, good sign. With the t originally people and some other outsiders. Every time the campaign, either time the trump world announces someone is coming in, it makes it look like things are more on track. I think in reality, they are. I went back to look eight years ago right now with president obama, things are on track. The president held his first News Conference about three days after the election. A totally different situation. The economy was crumbling and it just felt different. I think trumps on track. Very quickly, abby, your thoughts on Hillary Clinton. All of a sudden last night she appeared at the childrens defense fund, an organization shes been involved with since 40plus years ago when she finished yale law school. She got pretty emotional and very personal in speaking. Yes, absolutely, saying her goodbyes in some ways in the place where she started her career. You saw Hillary Clinton basically trying to help her supporters and help democrats at large move forward and take that step to say donald trump is president , how do we continue on from there. And also, kind taking herself a little bit out of it too. We didnt hear a lot of blame game about who was at fault for her loss. And that was probably a good thing because thats something that democrats have to grapple with right now. Jeff, you covered the clinton campaign, two years long now, let me play a little clip of what she said the first time she spoke publicly since her concession speech. She beat the odds. She found a way to offer me the boundless love and support she never received herself. And i dream of going up to her and sitting next to her and taking her in my arms and saying, look, look at me, and listen, you will survive. You will have a family your own. Three children. As hard as it might be to imagine, your daughter will grow up to be a United States senator, represent our country as secretary of state, and win more than 62 million votes for president of the United States. She was talking of her mother who had a very rough childhood. She was saying what she would tell her mother if she could about what her life would be like going forward. Thats about as reflective and emotional as well seen Hillary Clinton. You can tell how did i cut thff is for her. She is trying to help democrats and supporters a long through this grieving process it as the rest of washington moves on. I think the fact she kept that appointment last night to speak at that dinner which was on her schedule for a long time. She thought shed be speaking there as it is president elect. The president elect and the Vice President elect sworn in to office on january 20th. Pence has also been meeting today with the current House Minority leader nancy pelosi and other democrats. Pelosi who may soon be in a battle were told to save her leadership in the house of representatives. Theres a lot angst within the House Democratic caucus, wolf, about the future of their party and woehether or not nanc pelosis the right person. Even some pelosi supporters are asking her to explain her plans to bring the party back to the majority. G. K. Butterfield, the head of the congressional black caucus, says he needs to hear specifically how the party can get back into power and hes not heard that yet. Nancy pelosi in a press conference earlier today talked about her record as leader and when i asked her is it time for the party to have a fresh face, she said experience counts. And 2005 and 2006, i orchestrated the takeback of the house of representatives. When president clinton was president , the republicans took the house. President bush was president , the democrats took the house. When president obama was president , the republicans took the house. So we have an opportunity. That doesnt mean a guarantee. It means we will do very hard work. So i hope to have im very proud to have the opportunity. I know how to do it, to get it done. Now, wolf, pelosi wanted to have leadership elections today in which she would be reelected as a democratic leader. But the caucus pushed back. Actually delaying those elections at their request. A number of members wanted to wait until after thanksgiving, until november 30th, to decide whether or not she should be reelected speaker or whether s they should elect someone else. A lot concern and Division Within the party about the way forward after last weeks elections. You also had a chance to speak with congressman tim ryan just a few moments ago. What is he saying about a possible challenge to pelosi . Well, he may do it, wolf. He said he will make a decision today on whether or not to run. He said that he can present a new face for the party and, being from ohio, could connect with rustbelt voters. He also said that electing pelosi time and again may not be the right strategy. Take a listen. Im been in this caucus 14 years. And i think people have been talking about this since 2010. And, you know, i think weve had this conversation in 10, 12, 14, 16. You know, were at the lowest number of state and federal officials since reconstruction. We have the lowest number in our caucus since 1929. And weve lost over 60 seats since 2010. The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again. And you keep, you know, keep getting the same results. So type ime to move on i think. Ryan is also pushing back against pelosis contention she has the job locked up. Pelosi says she has twothirds of the support of her caucus. Ryan told me he does not think that is the case. One wild card here is congressman joe crawly whos a number five democrat in the House Democratic leadership, is also considering a run. I asked him, are you going to run against pelosi . He would not rule it out. Wrap for either crawly or ryan to mount a challenge against pelosi. I know theres an increasing number of members who are suggesting they admire nancy pelosi, they respect he the first woman to be the speaker of the house, but theyre sort of hoping she gets the hints from some of these members who are publicly now going out, saying its time for her to move on, and simply step back and give the chance to someone else. In her News Conference today, is there anything at all youre hearing that she would be willing to do that simply say, you know what, im ready to move on, let somebody else take over . Theres no indication of that, wolf. In fact, she is confident that any of these challenges she will flatly reject. I asked her, are you concerned at all about the hold on the leadership . She said no, flatly. She thinks shes in a good spot. She has deepbelieves within her. Shes raised a ton of money for these members. They owe her a lot too, wolf. She is certainly a respected governor but she has little to no real Foreign Policy experience. Joining us now, senator John Barrasso of wyoming, a key member of the Senate Foreign relations committee. Nikki haley, secretary of state, i can understand maybe other positions, but she really doesnt have much Foreign Policy experience. I think its a very good sign that president elect trump is broadening his look to see would he wants to bring into the cabinet. He could be talking to her about anything. But even even involved mitt romney, i understand. We broke the news, mark preston, our cnn politics skim editor, he reported that mitt romney and donald trump will meet this weekend and have a conversation and maybe even the possibility of mitt romney joining the trump administration. What do you think about that . I think its very good news to see were looking at donald trump going way beyond people that were just loyal to him in the beginning. This says he wants to put america first, get the economy going again, make sure that jobs are back, deal with all the issues affecting our country to build a stronger america for all of us and whether somebody was for him or not in the primary, the general election, doesnt matter now. He wants the best government he can have. Mitt romney was the republican nominee for years ago. Lost. President obama was reelected. What cab cabinet position would you like to see potentially romney to have . This is for trump to decide. Im just happy to see that donald trump is looking way beyond just the loyalists who might have been with him. Nothing wrong with any of them. But he has a brought area to draw from. People who can actually help the American Economy and people of this country. I think possibly secretary the treasury because of his business experience. Certainly secretary of state as well. Potentially could have that job. Yes, hed be i think hed be very good, incredible at a lot of jobs. I supported him. Im delighted donald trump is there right now. Ted cruz, he was there yesterday at trump tower. There was a lot bad blood as you know during the course of the campaign. All of a sudden he shows us, has a meeting, and theres some speculation, i dont know if this is realistic or not, u. S. Supreme court. He was a clerk for rehnquist. He is young, conservative. Really a brilliant legal mind. You know, you look to somebody who is a young scalia. Thats ted cruz. He knows the law. Hes not somebody to create new law. Hes somebody to interpret the law as it is. He could be there a long time. If hes in his mid40s, he could be there 40 years. Plus, that would have a huge impact on the future of the Supreme Court given his positions. He argues very influentialally. Very effective in that position. Because we talked about this president ial election, about being a fouryear term. But those Supreme Court appointments can last, as you say, 30 or 40 years. Elections have consequences as we all know. So what do you think about Rudy Giuliani as a possible secretary of state .
