You heard the president blistering the democrats going after him on the immigration policies. He says the democrats are extremists, they only want open borders and they have nothing to offer. Once again, we want to welcome our viewers here in the United States and around the world. I want to go to our chief correspondent jim acosta. Whats the news now on the day after the president signed that executive order on the day when First Lady Melania Trump makes a visit to a Holding Facility for children along the border with mexico . Update our viewers. Wolf, its all very puzzling. First of aill, we should point out to the president that as the president w president s first lady was at the border and he was criticizing the border when it was his policy that separated these children from their families. Lets get that out at the front of this. At the same time, wolf, we want to point out he may have confused the matter greatly by saying in the last several minutes in this Cabinet Meeting, talking about his executive action yesterday that reversed in the action of separating these kids from their parents. Talking about this executive action, he said, quote, thats only limited. It leads to separation ultimately, end quote i. The curious thing there, wolf, the puzzling thing there, wolf, is why the president would say its only limited. My guess is it will create more confusion and raise more questions about what is ultimately going to happen to these children. At the same time he made some comments that make peoples jaws drop, as they often do. He talked about how he wants to help these children, but they dont want to give him the money. These children have not been living in hotel settings after theyve been separated from their parents. On the contrary, after you look at, for example, the cover of Time Magazine and all the pictures being released from these facilities, the children would probably argue with the notion that theyve been kept in hotellike settings or anything remotely close to that, sohe president obviously stepping on his own message to some extent while the first lady is down on the border trying to show some compassion, meeting with some of these officials who take care of these children down on the border. The president is obviously talking about these children in very callous terms. And then as you heard during those comments just a few moments ago, wolf, he was sort of pivoting back and forth getting into political talk. At one point he said there was not going to be a blue wave this fall, there is going to be a red wave, and as he was wrapping things up there with nick mulvaney, he was talking about his crowd size which is obviously always on his mind at the rally that he held last night in duluth, minnesota. Some very curious, bizarre and strange comments by the president that are obviously going to make people in the press shop tear their hair out over dhs because now they have to go back and make sense of what the president said here. At this moment it does not at all clear things up as to why the president would say this executive action was limited yesterday and that things may still end up in separations because, obviously, what a lot of people were at least breathing a shortterm sigh of relief over when the president signed this executive action yesterday was that perhaps weve seen the end of the childn being separated from their families and now the president has sort of thrown all of that up in the air with some of these recent comments in the last several minutes, wolf. A very tough statement from the president in that Cabinet Meeting over at the white house. Well get back to you, jim acosta, as our chief white house correspondent. Its all happening any moment now. The house will start voting on the first of two immigration bills theyre considering today. The first vote is on the conservative goodlatte bill, as its called, which denies the path to citizenship for daca, the socalled dreamers. It funds the border wall with mexico, puts new limits on illegal immigration. Its expected to fail. The second bill is whats called the compromise bill which gives those dreamers a path to eventually citizenship and also deals with the family separation issue. The debate led to this rather heated moment on the house floor between speaker ryan and congressman mark meadows. Hes a head of the House Freedom caucus. Te it ended with him saying, and im quoting, im done. Joining us is a congressman. Thank you for joining us. Always nice to be with you, wolf. I want to get to these two pieces of legislation youre voting on today, but let me get to what we heard from the president of the United States. He said the democrats, and hes referring to nancy pelosi and Chuck Schumer and all the democrats basically. He calls them extremists. Theyre only interested in one thing, an open border. They want to continue to see massive child smuggling go on into the United States, and they have no interest in a real compromise. Your reaction . Well, i think there is always some on the left that are extremists of that nature. But the heart of the folks i work with want to solve this problem. Thats why they have Border Security plus taking care of the dreamers and this family situation is something i think easily can be put together for a deal. I want to clarify something else. The president is on to something, wolf, when he says the executive order temporarily handles this situation. Thats the problem with the law. The law as its written today as well as the flores case, which is a court case controlling this situation. That is why its so incumbent upon congress to act. We need to legislatively fix this. The president is doing what he can, and i appreciate him temporarily fixing this, but the law is flawed and need to be fixed. Im glad everybody realizes the comprehensive reform is essential, however the white house hasnt been able to achieve that, but youre right, the law needs to be fix ed in s many areas, and the republicans and democrats agree but disagree on how to go about it. The family separation is a fundamental problem in the court cases and the law that Congress Needs to weigh in on. Thats why this problem today will not be taken care of with this vote if it goes down. We need to take care of this legislatively, this issue as well as the otheri issue. Would you go for one that saves the comprehensive issue for another day but deals with this separation of children from their parents . Absolutely. If we are not successful today on these two immigration bills, which is probably the case as i see it today, were still going to have to deal with this and i would support that type of legislative fix. I know in the senate there are some conversations occurring along those lines. There would abe a strong bipartisan support if there were that standalone legislation. Tell me how youre going to vote on the more conservative and more moderate pieces of legislation today. Ive always been sensitive to these kids, the dreamers, and i think the second piece of legislation is the sore spot. Im supporting the second piece of legislation because it fixes the Border Security issues and takes care of the dreamers and deals with the family separation issue. I think thats a winwinwin and thats why ill be supporting that piece of legislation. Are there 200 votes in the house of representatives . Thats the majority that would send it to the senate for consideration over there. My hope is that some folks on the other side will come over, but its not looking as if well get to 18. We can get there. I know were close so lets see if we can get to the finish line. The first vote will be on the goodlatte legislation, right . Thats taking place as we speak, right . Thats correct, and my concern about that is the dreamers are not given that certainty, those kids. I dont mind holding the parents accountable, and the parents themselves will say, i will suffer the penalty so long as my kids have the opportunity to live the american dream. The first piece of legislation youll vote against and youll vote for the second piece of legislation. Well see if the 218 votes are going to fail, at least in part, because there are republicans like you who oppose it specifically because it doesnt provide an event wual pathway t citizen ship or daca, dreamers as we call them. The president is always tough on mexico, but today he says, quote, mexico does nothing for us. All they do is take our money and send us drugs. I want your reaction. Do you agree with the president when he blasts the u. S. Ally to the south, mexico, like that . Well, obviously ill let the white house and the president address those comments, but there are bad guys coming in from mexico and theyre here to do evil work. But most of the mexican people are good people who want to have a close relationship with america, and i would not label them all of one caliber or the other. The president was very firm. The president is speaking once again to the cabinet. Because our country cannot continue to run like this. We cant have open borders. You have to have borders. You dont have a country without borde borders. They have to be enforced. It has to be a strict enforcement. At the same time we want people to come into our country. We need them. We have Many Companies right now moving back into the United States. They need workers. We have 3. 8 unemployment. They need workers. We have to have them come in. Im saying, i want people to come in. They have to come in through a merit system, but we can have a lot of people come into our country through the merit system so they can help these companies that are looking so hard for people to make the company work. But the in a very, very simple way, congress has to get together, get their act together. Democrats and republicans, they have to come up with a solution. I have ideas, they have ideas, we can put them together very easily. Theres so much hatred, theres so much i mean, honestly, im not saying there is a lot of false reporting, a lot of misreporting, theres also a lot of great reporting. But congress has to come together and this is the best time to do it. Right now i think is the best time ive seen for people that are really well meaning. Unfortunately, we have an election coming up in a few months, and i guess theyre looking at it, and were looking at it, and maybe we have to just sort of put on the blinders when it comes to doing that. But congress has to get togeer, we have to do something on immigration. Its very important. We have to change almost everything thats been done in the past. Its ridiculous. We are being laughed at as a country because of our bad immigration policies. You know, were a young administration. This has been going on for 50 years, 60 years, 70 years. But its gotten worse over the last 20 because laws have been so complex and so ridiculous. We really dont have a law. We have laws that dont allow you what youre supposed to be doing. And we also want to keep it in a very humane way. We want to take care of people. If we dont take them in, we have to help. And we also need help for mexico. Mexico has not helped us and we need help from mexico. Its a long answer, but i also appreciate the great job youve done. Reporter what about kids already separated from their parents . We want them er. We dont want kids separated from their children. You gave me an example yesterday of 12,000 children. Of the 12,000, 10,000 came up either alone they werent necessarily young children, or either alone or they came up with traffickers and coyotes. These coyotes are bad dudes. But they came up with other people that brought them theyr. Thats 10,000 out of the 12. Of the 2,000, a lot of the people when they came in with their children, this is their third, fourth, fifth time trying to come into our country. So this is not a perfect situation. This is very bad. Now, a port of entry, if you go to a port of entry, it works out very nicely. Theyve been doing a good job. They dont want to come to the port of entry. Thats called doing it the legal way. But most of the people in the 2,000 category, youre talking about 2,000 children, those are people who have tried to come into our country many times the same way. They dont want to go to the port of entry. Usually thats for a very bad reason. Why dont they want to go in legally . You have to ask yourself that question. So you have a situation that is ripe for congress to get together and come up with a solution. And i am ready, willing and able to help and ready, willing and able to take this pen right here and sign very quickly. Reporter is there zero tolerance of the system . If we took away zero tolerance, you would have millions of people at the border. Right now they would be getting their little belongings, unfortunately, and they would be heading up. You would have a run on this country the likes of which nobody has ever seen. So we have to have strong borders. Frankly, the wall in terms of drugs, in terms of keeping certain people out that we dont want in this country, the wall is imperative. We have to have the wall. Weve started the wall. We have 1. 6 billion. Were fixing tremendous amounts of wall where its been overrun. But we have to come up with a solution. I would consider it whether its north korea, whether its so many other things. Look, ive been given a very tough hand, because i came up here, we had an economy that was going down, we had an iran problem, we had a middle east problem. Take a look at what was going on in the middle east. Its a lot better now, youre a lot smoother right now than anything you heard over the last eight years. But we were given a lot of bad cards. One of the bad cards we were given this immigration mess and it was made worse by all of the different contradicting laws that have been passed. So were going to work very hard with mike pence, with everybody else in this room. Were going to work very hard to see if we can solve the immigration problem. But we need democrats to be able to do it. If theyre going to obstruct, it cant be done because the republicans dont have the votes. Now, i think were going to win Additional Senate seats. That will help us a lot. But unless we get Additional Senate seats and unless we keep the house more or less like it is right now, youre not going to be able unless the democrats are serious and they want to come along and they want to get immigration work done. We can do something thats going to be historic. We can do something that will be historic, and we can get it done. I am ready, im here. All of these people, these are very talented people. He says there will be no taking away the zero tolerance policy which forces the government to go ahead and arrest, detain anyone coming into the United States illegally, including those with children. But he does say we dont want children separated from their parents, meaning the children will be taken together with their parents to some sort of detention facility. He said at one point during his remarks that he wants to deal with the illegal immigration of families coming to the United States but he wants those families to stay together, and he did Say Something significant. He said he wants to try to reunite separated groups, meaning those couple thousand, 2300 or so children who were separated in recent weeks from their parents, he wants to see them reunited. Well see how that happens. Lots of confusion right now how thats unfolding. Were going to have full analysis of all of this news. What all of this fails to deal with is that it is President Trumps policy that got us here in the first place. Let me read that tweet from ivanka trump. A Senior Adviser to the president , also his daughter. Now that an executive order has been signed ending family separation at the border, it is time to focus on swiftly and safely reuniting the families that have been separated. Sara, how significant is the fact these two women, the first lady and the president s daughter and Senior Adviser, at least be behind the scenes and now in front of the scenes have gotten involved, having some influence on the president , convincing him to move away from this separation policy . First of all, kudos to them, because President Trump, seeing the reports, didnt really believe the images down there. Hes the one that should have gotten on a plane and seen what impact his policies were having. He didnt do that. Instead we saw him today dma complaining about democrats, complaining about his crowd size while melania is down there figuring out what is going on and President Trump is tweeting now we need to figure out reuniting these kids. Ivanka trump is a staffer in this white house. She, theoretically, is someone who has made children, women part of her purview in the white house could be on the phone with the agency saying, what is the plan for how were going to do this in an expeditious manner . This is not a question weve had answered from these agencies today, and when we think about the anguish these kids have been in, from the moment they were separated from their parents, okay, were going to stop these policies but we dont have any answers for you how youre going to reunite with your child. I cant imagine how hard this is for them. And the children have only been able to speak to their parents twice a week. Kate bennett is traveling with the first lady in texas right now. Walk us through how this all unfolded and whats happening right now. Reporter well, wolf, it unfolded very quickly. This was a plan the first ladys office started less than two days ago when she decided she wanted to go to texas, and in fact, used the words, im heading to texas, is what she told staff and the president. Very quickly it came together. She didnt want to make a big deal of it beforehand. However, we are here on the ground. She is visiting a child a childrens facility here, and she is these are children, wolf, where there are 10 of these 55 or so children housed here are indeed part of the, were told, separated children that were separated from their parents. Majority of them are unaccompanied minors who have come over the border either by themselves or via other family members or many smugglers i think we just lost kate. One question is why did it take the first ladies to stir some compassion in this president , right . Ted cruz came to this decision that this was a policy that shouldnt stand. He presumably didnt need his wife to convince him. Its almost like compassion is sort of outsourced to the women, the first lady in this case and ivanka trump. I agree with sara. This idea that ivanka trump said, we really need to focus on this. I think she works at the white house every day. And i think this policy has been going on for about six weeks and i dont know that she has been out front, certainly not publicly, in trying to do something about it. Its a story that has been brought to us by pictures and sounds, in images, but its not going to be one thats solved wi th by that, right . I do commend the first lady of going down there, but the logistics of how you get these kids who are all over the country some are in texas, some in new york, reportedly some as young as nine months old. How do you logistically reunite these kids . This has been a controversy of this president s own making. Its a logistical and bureaucratic nightmare at this point, and its not clear that the first lady going down there certainly shell bring back some information, but the information we got out of here wasnt very reassuring for all the kids who are out there. So yesterdays executive order simply will keep the Children Together with their parents, but they will still be in detention, apparently, detention facilities which you dont have for indeterminate periods of time. F not to mention the traumatized 2300 children who have already been separated from their parents. His executive order made no reference to it, and from what im told, Homeland Security now treats these children as unaccompanied nors. They are now people to take care of these kids, even if they have parents. So there is absolutely no effort to reunify these 2,400 traumatized children with their parents. They have to reunify those kids with their parents as quickly as possible. Dhs is not going to do that. Theyre trying to find sponsors for these kids. The president did just say his goal is to reunite separated groups, in his words. Lets see if he can do that. He is the president of the United States. He can tell hhs, and he can tell other elements of the u. S. Government to do it if thats what he wants to do. Let me get to these votes for under way in the house of representatives. I know youre in the senate. The house voting today on two immigration bills. The president cast down that either measure would eventually pass. Even if it passed the house, he doubts it would pass the senate. Let met read to you what he tweeted. What is the purpose of the house doing good immigration bills when you need nine bills by democrats in the senate and the d dems are only looking to destruct, which they feel are good for them in the midterms. The republicans must get rid of the stupid filibuster rule. It is killing you. The president has an outstanding checks and balances. He just wants the white house to do his bidding and hell hold anybody hostage for that. As far as i know, the house bills do not go very far in protecting daca applicants, so he continues to wait. He cannot find a good splan explanation for his criticisms. He just blames the democrats, and even though the trump party now controls the house, the senate as well as the presidency. These house bills have done hardly anything to really protect daca or to create the kind of Immigration Reform that i would like to see, which is comprehensive Immigration Reform. The president calls you and your fellow democrats extremists. Youre only interested in one thing, he says open borders are preventing the republicans from achieving anything. He used very strong words. I dont know if you heard in his Cabinet Meeting. You know what my strong reaction to that is . Its a lie. For the president to constantly say that we are against Immigration Reform that makes sense, that is hue marnmane, it lie. In fact, he is the one creating chaos at every turn. He never makes up his mind. We had a daca bill he said he would sign that was bipartisan. He didnt sign it until the last minute. We never know where the president is, but one thing he can be counted on is to blame everyone else for the chaos. He loves to blame democrats as obstructionists even if the democrats dont control the house, senate or the presidency. The two bodies that are his party he cant get what he wants out of them. The problem is the president signed this and he says this, but the r is we do not know today how are those kids going to get reunited . Where are these families going to be detained . Physically what structure is there going to be . So theyre good pigts, theyre important pictures, potentially, but they dont answer the real problem. Ive spoken to republicans and they use the same word tha the senator used a minute ago, chaos, chaos, chaos. Sara, a lot of confusion. Yeah, theres absolutely a lot of confusion, especially when it comes to the question of what is going to happen, how these kids who are already separated from their parents are going to be reunited. I think one of the important thgs about melania visit, shes visiting with kids who are a little bit older. We dont have answers. Shes not seeing these kids who are eight or nine months old who have been separated from their parents who cant advocate for themt themselves, cant tell who theyre staying with what their parents name is. It doesnt matter if theres nice pictures on the wall, it doesnt matter if theres a soccer field kids can play on. Youve separated these kids from their parents after this traumatic experience of crossing the border, and some are too young to know where they are to have any understanding of whats going on. Thats a good point indeed. And the uproar of separating children from their parents has certainly dominated the news in the United States over past several days. He said, is that a man or a woman . It was very personal. Yeah, i think we saw sort of classic Campaign Trump here. He clearly had a lot he wanted to get off of his chest, and if hes going and jumping from topic to topic and just kind of lobbing fireballs at anyone he can think of, that is a way for him historically to try to change the news cycle. He does know the longer we talk about this child separation policy, the longer were talking about these horrible stories of kids being separated from their parents, and the worse this gets for him. I think he went out there and put everything out on the field other than talking about immigration. Ive been to i dont know how many of these trump rallies and usually he spends a lot of time talking about immigration. That wasnt the case last night. He focused on it only briefly because he realizes this is an issue where hes getting caught flatfooted where the country has turned against him. But he wasnt playing to the country in that. He was playing to his base at a campaign rally. Thats a good point. The president often likes to point out hes been on the cover of Time Magazine many, many times over these many years, but i suspect this new issue of time coming out today, hes not going to be very happy with that. It shows the picture of a little girl next to a towering image of the president. Thats the iconic picture of the terrified little girl with the caption how damaging has all of this, the separation of kids from their moms and dads. To steal the president s favorite word, huge. He loves to frame those magazine covers and put them up in his office. That one will not be on his wall, imsure. I think the republicans i spoke to who met with him on the house said he understands. He gets it. The impact that this is having on impolitically. I think its why we saw him come out the next day, even though it hasnt solved the issue yet and sign this order because if the house goes to the democrats, there are three words, articles of impeachment. If he does kind of the unseemly thing and the comment he made about why arent we the elites . Hes not just talking about himself. Hes talking about all those people in that room or watching at home and saying politicians dont care about the things i care about and the things im going through day to in my life. And this guy who is living in trump tower and now living in the white house is able to speak to americans across the country in the way other politicians just cant. I think the democrats are going to be in big drubl in the midterms and in the next president ial if they dont remember that is a skill that this president has. The president is right, he was elected president of the United States. He makes that point and thats an accurate point, indeed. Guys, thank you very, very much. What are people there telling you . Wolf, i just visited a shelter in this area and people are actually changing their plans based on the news that theyre hearing from the u. S. mexico border. We are on the southern part of mexico as you mention right there with the border with guatemala. The reason it is so important to be here right now all the folks from south america, people from guatemala and we are seeing the first indicator of what we will see for those who plan to head to the u. S. mexico border. A few things that stuck with me when i was talking to mothers at that shelter. One mother said that she arrived here a few weeks ago. She had plans to go to the United States. Left honduras because of gang violence, she said that there was a threat made on one of her children to kill her children. She left the very next day and now here shes actually seeing the coverage from the u. S. mexico border. The families being separated and she mentioned that audio. She mentioned hearing the children crying when they were separated and she said because of that, she is putting her journey on hold. She plans to stay here. Eventually, hopefully make it to the u. S. For her, but for right now, shes too afraid to head to the United States and possibly be separated from her child in her eyes. Now, i asked her why she just wouldnt go back to honduras and, again, she mentioned if she were to go back, she believes she would be killed. Leyla, hold on for one moment. The president is speaking, again. I want to listen in. We have to have a very strong border, if we dont, you will have millions of people and it will be a terrible thing if we ever did that. So, we have to be very, very strong on the border. If we dont do it, you will be inundated with people and you really wont have a country. Without borders you wont have a country.
