The National Governors Association Chair governor coxe, and vice chair jared polis held a brief News Conference at the part start of their meeting in the washington, d. C. Area. Thanks for being here. We had a wonderful session, happy to take any sessions you might have. That was an interesting discussion. Did you learn anything from this you would incorporate as governors . I thought it was phenomenal. You do not often see governors paying that kind of rapt attention to speakers. There were several things i learned. Some of the discussion on civic participation was really important and a message we need to share. The idea is something we shared often about getting to know People Better and how important that is, seeing each other as human beings. It is something we all need to work on. I would love to make that video mandatory showing at every university, high school. I think every family needs to see what they talked about. Gov. Polis i enjoyed learning about how the Supreme Court disagrees with one another and ultimately Work Together to form majority opinions, minority opinions. That is something there is not a lot of transparency into so it was good to hear how in practice the Supreme Court strives to live up to the disagree better concept. [indiscernible] that is something i try to do everyday try to meet regularly with members of the Minority Party in my state. We have a wonderful relationship. Those relationships do matter. When you get into those difficult discussions, when you have a foundation of trust. I appreciate the idea of a good faith. Justice barrett is right. One thing we do regularly in politics and Civil Society today is, we demonize the other side, assume their argument is not in good faith and ours is. We would all be better to disagree passionately but understand the person on the other cited is making good faith argument side is making good faith argument. We are on the brink of a Government Shutdown and have seen initiatives fizzle. What lessons can Congress Take from the governors . On a lot of these issues, keeping government government open, increasing Border Security. You have democrats and republicans that agree. That is the good news. Bad news is, figuring out the systems and mechanisms to get to that common sense agreement and pass it and make it happen. When you see 60, 70 senators agreeing, whether it is ukraine aid or securing our border. It does not mean everyone agrees, those who do not make their case. There needs to be a simple vote and move the country forward. Gov. Cox something Justice Sotomayor said resonated with me. She said when they argue, when they debate, they are present with each other. She said one problem with legislative bodies, and i agree, is that this does not happen. In the state of utah, i am sure it is the same in colorado, they are actually in the room together having a debate. You will see someone speaking and then you pan out and nobody is there. People perform differently for the cameras than when they are having a private conversation. I concur with my colleagues that the state of congress is difficult. At a minimum keeping government functioning, literally the only thing they have to do, and they are struggling to do that. We saw struggles to select a speaker. Even the most basic things are not happening. These lessons could very much apply to their work. [indiscernible] gov. Polis probably. The incentive structure right now in politics and media is all leading to the extremists any more of a voice. Double down on the Border Security . What bipartisan solution do you see . Gov. Polis governors have a pragmatic approach in that we are dealing with to various degrees a lack of Border Security, a broken and lengthy bureaucratic process around asylum. Many of us are for any and all fixes. More Border Patrol agents, better security at the border, filtering out frivolous asylum request before they get into the system. I would see all of these as major progress. Gov. Cox it is Border Security and fix legal immigration. Most americans agree to the same thing. Sadly, politicians and congress cannot seem to come to any agreement. Last question. The alabama Supreme Court ruling on ivf. Can republicans come together when ivf is threatened . Gov. Cox it is a good question. We have been in meetings all week. I have not read the alabama decision or opinion, so i do not know. It is one of the issues i am sure we will be talking about more.
