CSPAN Weekly Addresses January 5, 2013
Of the left and the right to have them tell the story and then to use portions of that story in the museum to let visitors understand the complexity of this constitutional drama. The former head of the nixon line and museum. Sunday night at 8 00 on cspans q a. Next the president s address. He talks about avoiding the tax hikes. Then dave camp call for spending cuts and the elimination of tax loopholes. Hi, everybody. Over the past year as i traveled across the country campaigning for this office i told you if i was fortunate enough to be reelected i would work to change the tax code that will benefits the wealthy. This week we did that. For first time we raised taxes on the wealthiest 2 americans in a bipartisan way and avoiding a middleclass tax hike that could throw the economy back into a recession. 97 of Small Businesses will not see their income taxes go up one dime. We maid sure that millions of families will continue to see tax credits. Companies will continue to receive tax breaks for the research they do, investments they make, and the Clean Energy Jobs they make. Two million americans that are out of work will continue to receive Unemployment Benefits as long as they are actively looking for a job. We still need to do more to put americans back to work while also putting this country on a path to pay down its debt. Our economy cant afford more showdowns on the manufacturing crisis along the way. Even as our businesses created two million new jobs last year, including 168,000 jobs last month the dysfunction in congress made consumers less confident. We know there is a path forward. I signed into a law a deaf reduction. This weeks action further reduces the deaf deficit. Im willing to do more. I believe we can find more places to cut spending without shortchanging things like education, job training, research and technology all of which is critical. Spending cuts must be balanced with more reforms to our tax code. The wealthiest individuals and the biggest corporations should not be able to take advantage of loopholes that are not available to most americans. As i said earlier, one thing i wont compromise over is whether or not congress should pay the tab for a bill they have already racked up. Congress refused to give the United States the money to pay the bill on time the consequences could be catastrophic. Our familieses and our businesses account no afford that dangerous game again. I congratulation the newly sworn members of congress and i look forward working with the new congress in a bipartisan way. If we focus on the interest of our country above the interest of our party im convinced we can cut spending and we can protect the middle class. We can step up to meet the important business that awaits us this year, creating jobs, fixing our infrastructure and our immigration system. Educating our children and shielding them from the horrors of gun violence. This is not what we should do, these are things we must do. Happy new year, everybody. Im congressman dave camp and chairman of the house and means committee. Let me be candid. I understand the frustrations of so Many Americans have with washington right now. Youre right. This government we have spends too much and wastes too much. It is time to stand up and say enough is enough. That is why the republicans in Congress Took critical action this week to protect Hardworking Taxpayers from massive tax hikes. Americans are paying more for gas, groceries, and for gas. That is why we made sure the tax cuts passed a decade ago they were made permanent. Now we can look forward. Speaker boehner says they reelected a republican majority and we will used to hold the president accountable for the balance approach he promised. That means strengthing programs like Social Security and medicare and creating a tax code that creates a healthy economy. Lets face it, the i. R. S. Tax code is a nightmare, it is too complex, too costly, and too unfair. There is something fundamental wrong when roughly 60 of Hardworking Taxpayers have to hire a professional to do their taxes. You should not need an army of lawyerers to understand our tax code. Thats what we have to do start to work on Real Solutions to return accountability to our tax code by limenting special interest loopholes. Eliminating special interest loopholes. Your tax rate should be determined by what is fair. The simple truth is that were in this fiscal mess because washington takes too much of your money and wastes it. That is the real problem and it needs a real solution. We have to make sure washington is accountable for every tax dollar it spends. Unfortunately, the spending problem is getting worse, not better. Under president obama weve had four straight years of trillion dollar deficits. Our debt is over 16 trillion. Were selling the next generations future. Many of our democrat colleagues dont get it. Through the fiscal cliff discussion the president and the democrats who control washington refused to take any meaningful steps to make washington live within its means. That is irresponsible and fails to acknowledge what every family already knows. When you have no more money in your account and your credit cards are maxed out then the spending must stop. That is the situation faces america. We must identify responsible ways to tackle washingtons wasteful spending. So when the house returns with the 113th congress our resolution is clear. Were committed to making our economy stronger and healthier. Were going to fight wasteful washington spending and deliver the accountable you demand. We call on the president and democrats to join us in that fight. God bless you and god bless the United States of america. Coming up on cspan the communicaters look at Major Technology and communication issues expected in 2013. Follow bid a discussion on cyber and drone warfare. Then a look at Irans Nuclear program. It is quite true that peoples history is a result on how were synthesizing the work of great other historians. What happened in the 1960s with the counter culture, is a whole new generation of young historians had come up. They were in essence reevaluating all aspects of our past.
