At about 2 45 is when my group of reporters were ushered in. Plus about 10 members of the public and when i got into the courtroom the former president was already seated. I sat directly behind him behind about two rows of his Security Service detail in the courtroom was called there were about 60people total in their. I did see jack smith, special prosecutor sitting on the other side. In the audience, not in the prosecution but the president did not speak at all the entire time. When the plea was entered was his attorney entered the plea and he said course, we need not guilty. Sort of not in a joking way but there was no question that was going to the anything else. Im now there was some discussion back and forth made this argument take longer than he thought. I didnt see any of his family members or entourage but i would typically recognize as a lot of his secret service that was there with him in the courtroom. Another may have been other people waiting outside of the courtroom apart from i could recognize. I didnt see a member of his family for any of thosepeople we normally associate with him. Ddid the judge say anything about his legal representation . With all these people jumping on and off the ship did he make anycomment about that . They did establish the two go lawyers with the former president will be representing him personally. One of those lawyers was given a special waiver weve been talking about by judge eileen can have been so controversial in this case already so the two we saw our representing himin this case. There was a bit of backandforth on the other defendant in this case, mister nauta. His lawyer has not yet received that waiver so because of that is already to be delayed by about two weeks. They were able to go through with the reading ofthe bond. They both dont have a financial commission, they dont have to pay any fines. They dont have to get back their passports, no restrictions on owning firearms but there is the condition of who they can talk to about the facts of the case so because of what we were talking about with that special waiver when a lawyer who is not barred in this specific Southern District are going to delay his offering is whether he enters a plea of not guilty. When they come back the judge said mister nauta does not have to appear in person. Its interesting to see how they are charged with some of the same crimes and how this might be a different situation. Cnn reporting that nauta had his mug shot taken even though the formerpresident did not. Whether the president was able to have his comedy his lawyer anything or were there any representations . The small contingent of Trump Supporters is leaving wtoday without incident. The arraignment lasting 47 minutes. The former president s son was by his side. The plea was entered by his attorney. That plea being not guilty. I want to bring in Legal Correspondent julia is in a and we had a fascinating conversation because on court tv you deal with the law. This is the law in politics, thoughts on what you are seeing after the former president left thecourthouse. This is a difference in the way that people are responding because you see the crowd outside the courthouse supporting him and does not supporting him, its a different kind of field than you see for an arraignment, not a rally what we deal with is often times you see people digging into the indictment, are the facts there to support whats going on and in this case it seems that theres a high number of people, i would go as far as to say and overwhelming majority of people dismissing the facts completely as they dont believe in the way this was handled or those who seem to be on board because e they believe this person is guilty. Rt as youre seeing these images i am reminded of the phrase jury nullification in which you only have to find that one member of the jury who says i do not believe anything the prosecutors are putting forward and therefore i am going to continue to vote for acquittal no matter what evidence you present and theres a strong case right now for anargument of nullification. Being that theyre not going to follow the law even if the law and the facts lineup, even if theres proof the on a reasonable doubt they will stick with something else, either their gut or how they feel about the system and it is possible in a case where a juror would go that route but jury selection would be so important. Federal juries usually are much more intensely that it. And typically seen as close to a group of unbiased people, people who walk arent polarized on one side or the other who will serve as jurors. As youre announcing politically and also the images legally, what is now the most important part of this case moving forward . Is it the evidence allowed to be presented . I know youre going to say all of the above that youve got to pick one. Can i say transparency . Or the public they need to see as much as possible about howthis works. Theyre not going to be able to see it in a may way they may be used to with cases in state court. The first step was his indictment. Its got pictures, a lot of information we dont often see in a federal indictment. A lot of things will be sealed but as much as possible the justices need to make sure the public understand this process so they understand the outcome. One of the reasons judges have argued about not having cameras in a courtroom is not to introduce the circus like atmosphere. I think its always been that way in terms of the publics interest and we have an interest inthis case. I dont expect there will be any exceptions made for more awareness in those courtrooms. Even journalists wont be able to take in their devices to relay information but i thinkyoure highlighting a good point. When we have these pretrial inhearings, the former president will be able to come out, give a rally and speech and say what you want to say about what happened inside and it will likely overshadow the case as thought. So it likely the entire narrative of the process will be through either the former president and his supporters that are there orthose journalists inside trying to relay whats going on. Weve been so focused on the former president after leaving the courthouse, walk us back to what just happened inside thatcourtroom as history was made. Good afternoon and once again to some degree a lot of this could have beenpredicted ahead of time. A lot of our legal experts predicted it correctly. Not guilty plea entered. The judge asked our exceptional producer noted ordered the president , former president to limit contact to certain individuals including his codefendant and also we learned there would be no travel trestrictions. There was that possibility a passport ab surrender or that those International Travel may be restricted, not the case here. I was struck at the courthouse in miami in the helicopters, hearing them overhead of just how fascinating.
