CSPAN2 Settle For More December 25, 2016
Isnt that fantastic . Settle more more is a memoir and the one thing i can say with assurance being on the Book Business is that theres an art to writing a memoir. The most of all the documents newline to expose some of their own blemishes and vulnerabilities to ask and they are and what they are about. Let me just say, settle for more is a great memoir. She takes her through her career as a successful corporate lawyer in her decision to abandon that life for a risky new venture and her abolition in her role as a professional woman, spouse and mother. Along the way she takes a deeply critical look at herself including some personal demon she had detained the shoe search for personal fulfillment and professional success. One other important point aboutl this book it is really, really funny. Actually, all areas and places. Megyn has an incredibly quick wit which may explain how sherk survived some of the challenging environment shows how to work and in some of the very contentious people she has covered. Im not mentioning any names. You all know that there is much more in this way then i just outlined, especially what shes been through in the past 18 months. But its any consolation i dont know how many of you have been following the local news about the 5000 block of connecticut avenue for politics prose is located. We know a thing or two about thi real consequences of fake news stories. And we are with you and we havet an experience of the top of which it does. To get to the heart of her book, were lucky to have another superb broadcast journalism. Katty kay is well known here pages the washington anchor for bbc world news america appeared many of you have seen her on msnbc morning show and nbc meet the press if we are delighted she will be a conversation tonight. Please join me in welcoming these two exceptional and extraordinary women. [applause] palestine. We just carry on i carry onle my final night in half an hour of applause. That is how we are opening there kelley filed tonight. Be that theres a criticism and negativity. Is just a nice is just famous book tour has been the opposite of the internet. Thank you all for coming. I know the traffic so we areat especially appreciative that you joined megyn and i hear. Full disclosure we are friends. Its a real treat for me to talk to her for an hour. Ive got your questions and ill throw them in randomly during the course of the evening. I read more over the course of the weekend. Its great. Its funny, honest. I have to admit when i was first asked to do this, i thought how does someone your age write a memoir in your just starting out in life. Is a story to that because originally i was going to write a book about the segment idea called cupcake nation when we see the worst vacation of america and no one else who cant function if they suffered any sort of offense and it is really irritating me. So i called on cupcake nation. N thats the information we run. The more i read about it, the more i realized theres a reason i like this and the reason i feel that way. I can explain it better if i walk through how i got to this place and why a fine cupcake nation being so actionable and deeply problematic for our society and those defending something. The bottom line there is diversity while not fun to go through as an opportunity to grow and become longer. If i had no adversity in my life and i have had here in academyy and a protective battle for 45 years, how do you think i would handle the past year . I wouldve been crying under my desk. The reason i was able to handle that is because i had been through iterations of that before. Lets go back and start at the beginning. Hes almost reddish. And i say that as a compliment. My mom is one of the stars of this book. Which she loves. Yes, i got it but i love about you. The idea that they inculcate the idea that you want to. I think that we both have kids. The world our kids live in the u. K. Trophy for showing up for the game. Ive had enough of that and i certainly didnt grow up with that. My parents attitude was not you are so special. It was more like you dont seem that special so far. Like we are openminded toecialt specialness. But we dont see it yet. I was a gift to me because honestly i felt dearer pressure. They wanted me to be happy. He didnt have to be funny. You had to have a good sense of humor and you have to engage. You werent allowed to set like a potted plant at the dinner table. Beyond that, the same happy. Are you happy . Good luck. Fo that worked out very well. That all started with my mom and dad. As for participation trophies,f it wasnt that if you achieved they didnt give you praise. If you did something well, you got it, but there is no pressure to achieve. This is really about megyn family. Your dad would ask you about her day and then you go on and on and on. And your brothers at me like shes talked enough. Make her shut up they would say. My daddy was an educator, a top phd student in education would go around the dinner table every night. All five of us had dinner together every night. And my dad would say to everybody, whats the report. He would go down the line. Pete and suzanne would get these answers, just a few words here and there. Sure enough you get to me and go on and on. And they would say make her shut up. D my dad with said you had your chance and he with me now you listen to her. And actually, my friend proposed name in my book that. Is to do pretty well and not in forecasting. The two incidents that really struck me during the course offi your childhood and we should talk about those. The first was what happened when you got into seventh grade. Even surrounded by friends. You go into school and then a and for you seventh grade was a nightmare. It was. As i think the Second Chapter in the book and its about my seventh grade year called me engrossed in the book. And honestly its still hard to talk about to this day. I just turned 46 and this happened when i was 12. Dont make me do the math, but its a long, long time. I can still get teary about it. I think back on what happened. I had always been somewhat popular. I was not attractive at all. I had no appeared currency. I was never one of those girls like shes so beautiful. Ight my parents used to be like shes going to be with us for a long time. You talk about putting onn weight and having acne. Huge space between the two front teeth which came from myat dad. When i was 12, dont you wonder how that fix. My dad would be like dont you want to look like Lauren Hutton . Can i go with my mom. The point has a grip on attractive. I did have bad skin. My hair is hideous. Thats my friends thought or but insisted i try son and every summer. I didnt look good. You have to not picture this version of me where there were two people that paid made me look good. Abnormal but glamorous. Its worth pointing that out by the way. So i did have currency in my personality and rent shapes. Back to me was important to naomi go in a sense of self and worth and for whatever reason, everyone here has been a seventh grade. The group is turned on me one day. So many people have said why. The Group Requires no reason. Nor do they provide an explanation. They just turned. I went from being a popular girl to being an object of disgust for them. I mean, it wasnt just that they didnt want to hang out with me. It was that i repulsed them. And you could just feel it as i would walk through the hall. You know, they would throw things at me. In there were comments about her body, about my skin and it culminated in this horribley episode. I know that people have had it so much worse so please understand i know that. But at the time i didnt have that perspective. But i was home with my parents on a saturday night and the leader of a group called and she said she is having a party andme she said megyn comments you know where all the people from my party are . I set out to demagogue yelled into the phone. We are here. I still got upset about it to this day. It was so cool and i was already feeling a vulnerable to my parents were watching me and i hadnt disclosed to them even that i was being bullied. Nevermind to this extent. I went out into the backyard, but cold snow in albany night in the winter and i skated on top of the snow which had been iced over. Streaming down my face in the darkness itself so isolated and alone and targeted. As i read back that didnt stop until the spring when thismed he beautiful angel named heather shepherd came and sat next to m that bunch and befriended me for no good reason. All you need is one. She befriended me and changed everything for me. Remained and you know we remained friends for years. I never articulated to her how grateful i was for that. Until this book. She knows my mom. They both live in albany and she rather and she called my mom and said she helped me, too. Which meant that much to me. Anyway, to this day i cannot tolerate the bullying which i think is one upside. Youd done more than going out the backyard encounter them. What i there are a few. I would not recommend it is they do have empathy. I have empathy for true thatsa dems of negative events. Thats not to say i believe i dont like that word. You have been victimized, you can massacre had here at i do have great empathy for people at the heart appeared you mentioned that you didnt tell your mom and you are very close to your mom and dad. Why didnt you tell them and are i was ashamed. I felt their repulsion. I started to believe i waswas do repulsive, and that i was doing it all wrong, that i wasnt likable and that was an area in which my parents did rally that. They wanted to do have friends. Like normal parents they wanted me to have friends. Ive. While they. While they were never made it to track did, one day i was leaving the house and my mom said i know a little girl who didnt brush her hair today. And out it went. She didnt make the brush it. On they didnt put any pressure on me to look good. But there were certain understanding that i should havi friends and i felt embarrassed that i didnt. Your dad died when youre young. You clearly had a very Good Relationship with him. And for those who are going to read the book, the night he died he had a row. Bullying and the fact he died. Thats a story never toldandi publicly before before thisow memoir. I wrestled with it. I really wasnt sure how much i wanted to disclose about that night. Not because of people like youou sitting here, people who aremi openminded and i hopeully can kindhearted, hopefully can be made through it not a generous land in a neutral lands. There are haters out there and they certainly didnt want them messing with my fathers death, what its like to be a publica v figure. If you expose anything about yourself publicly. In the end i thought it is integral to who i am and i know there are other people who have lost somebody under less than ideal circus dances in terms of their relationship. It makes you feel better when you know someone you can relate to have had similarship. Circumstance. For the record, my dad and i had a beautiful relationship. I was only 15 when he died. He was 45. He had no heart problems. 10 days before christmas in 1985 he dropped dead of a heartng. Attack. It is a fight over a class ring. I was being a 15yearold girl who wanted a nicer classroom t that we could afford. He was telling me we can afford to bring and i wouldnt let it go. And he had had it come had had it come as we turned and walked out of the kitchen, through his hands up at me. He never got ad. He wasnt that kind of parent. My mom on the other hand, she would get mad. He turned and walked out and i walked past him in the living room to go upstairs to myd my ls bedroom and my last sight of him as he was staring at the Christmas Tree in the living room, a good man alone. And that is just something i have to live with. That ends on those terms because the next thing that happened was my sister came into my room and said wake up, daddy had a hearts attack. And he was never revived. I write in the book about go into the hospital. I dont know if youve ever lost anybody, but going in there and feed him and having the chance to say goodbye, how strong my m mom was. My mom is 44 years old at the time. Theres me, 15yearold me heading for college. Shes a nurse at the va. She does not have a lot of money. My dad had just canceled the major insurance policy we had because its like im 45 years old. He was in a heart patient. He didnt think he would need it. So we had money problems facing a and my mom did that as well. She was such an example for me. Not by preaching pure she never said you must be strong. You must not cry. But she cries all the time. Satellite obviously. We are just having a little therapy session. But she made very clear that you have to function in the face of emotional upset you but thats the mark of a truly healthy and. Functioning in the face of it. That is something i can do. In you talk about how shes strong and she was incredibly strong after your father died. You tell a story of how youve been a lawyer and we are jumping forward several years then you get to new york, moved to new york to new york a new ring her when you cry because you are lonely and your apartment is cold. The second issue is kind of sympathetic read by the third night she was like shut up. The she said by the third night, megyn, stop playing the victim, not attractive. And man did that jolt out of my self pity party. She has been there. And then it was like now you are being ridiculous. Tough it up, buttercup. And it helps me. I think about it to this day. Tough enough, buttercup sums up do you say to your own kids . They are babies. It may be cruel. Kids but i guess its a broader question. Youre bringing up your kids with the same values that not everyones a winner. Authority thrown away my sins participation trophy. It wouldve ran in the garbage. Im sorry, i did. I went to my Daughters School appear to have have prepared teacher conference at the beginning and she was like what is your core message and i said you are not special. You ar i mean it in the context i delivered it to you. I dont jump for joy every time they give me a piece of paper with reliance on it like they are the next picasso. I try not to tell them theyre the greatest thing since widespread. I kiss them and hug them all day long and tell them how much i love them but i dont tell them how extraordinary they are allhe the time. But i am openminded to extraordinary mess should that come along. We jump forward. We became a lawyer in chicago, new york and after 10 years or something and law, theres a journal entry which is sort of full of angst about how im more excited and i need more than this in my. Why was it not enough . I put my journal entries in the book. You can read them is a little Bridget Jones diary. Except i didnt smoke. I had been practicing law for over nine years connecticut in upstate new york, it meant a lot to me to be a lawyer. I have arrived in now people are going to be taking me seriously. I liked this sort of been fierce and tough and serious. Megyn kelly esquire. And so i was really let to walk away from it because it meant something to the selfimage the brick wall of unhappiness and you get to a point or you cant it anymore. Malaise of mediocrity and i have to go. Y. How did you get into journalism. I was always interested in journalism but i got dead, which i love to remind them of now. [laughter] they dont care, but it means something to me. And so when i is started to leave the love and maybe i could do it now. Its not that easy to jump into a career as a broadcast journalist. I really was determined, but without the immediate plan. Li in retrospect i feel like my father may have had a hand in it because my dad and his guitar playing is enough the book. We never took a fancy family vacation. We went to lake ontario and new york. He played the guitar around the campfire and we would dance and sing and that kind of thing. So i tried to learn guitar and i was taking guitar lessons when i was an unhappy lawyer and low and behold a woman in my guitar class as it turns out was a producer for the nbc affiliate in chicago, which i didnt even know, the davis class one weekend because the Space Shuttle had blown up. But she came back i said where were you . I may miss. Youre in news . Honestly, i believe in stuff like this. Theres a reason as in the guitar class and the reason i connected with this woman and this beautiful, lovely woman who sometimes can be competitive and they dont always fix said to help another woman in Competitive Industry in particular will happen to guys, too. She was just the opposite of that and had endless generosity for me and help me make a resume tape and get tips on how to get into business. Within six months i had my first tv job parttime and within 12 months fox news hired me. With the rewarding aspect of the most challenging aspect . The most rewarding aspect is the responsibility of its giving me and that ive heard. Not so much seeking truth to power. It is being to old people in power accountable. That the most rewarding aspect of it. E you can ask the hard questions and that kind of have to deal with you. You know, certainly in the position im in now, they kind of have to. Take donald trump. He avoided me for most of the year. He would come on the kelly file. But that didnt mean i didnt have a chance to hold them accountable. Ton, i did. Hillary clinton never came on the kelly file. Not once, which did not serve her well. Thats my makeup artists clapping. Shes on my side. Anyway, that is the best part. P the worst part is i would definitely say the worst part is as much as i try to avoid that i give lots of it and i really hate it. I find that stuff soul killing. Because of this year, you went from being someone who reports on the news to becoming the focus of the news. And it happened after you askedd that question with the Republican Debate to donald trump about how hes talked about women in the past. What happened after you asked that question. Theres an extraordinary day that you had the dean internet. Is one of the things i revealed the book is a prequel to that question. And there was one. Try but i always had a Good Relationship. We were red, but we were friendly. The week before the debate on the kelly file about his divorce from donna tron. The daily beast had broken about his divorce 30 years ago in which she had sworn deposition testimony testified that he raped her. It was extremely brutal, extremely nasty and very detailed and the daily beast register the story because he had come out with his announcement speech at the neckg mexicans are sending it was speaking, that is why they wente there. They say look, she does not stand by it. It was 30 years ago. It is a contentious divorce proceeding in which people notoriously lie. How do you account for that reality in your reporting which i thought was skeptical enough about those allegations. I thought it was very fair to try because we were not the ones dredging up the divorce. Somebody else was and it wasnt just the daily beast. Then it dawned everywhere. I challenge them. It was fine. Donald trump was not happy. He was not happy about this story on. He was not happy we get airtime and insisted i call them that monday before that theres a president ial. And he was supposed to come on the kelly file that monday. And he wouldnt unless i called him personally. So i called him and it did not go well. He said he never shouldve put that story on your show. I said i did your favor. You should be thanking me. But that reported she had recanted and all that other stuff. Bill oreilly didnt put that on his show. I said no oreilly is not the editorial page. Show he said id never want to see that kind of story on your showa again. I said mr. Trump, you dont. Control the editorial on the file and that is when he blew and started screaming at me. You are a disgrace. You ought to be ashamed ofi al yourself. I am a feminist and a beautiful twitter account against you and i still may. That was the first ball the first bowling you had in seventh grade. I dont off i would classify that so much as an angry politician which i missed it. But the threat of the twitter account was clear. At this point i had that question drafted. I know im asking him this as its been drafted for weeks. The opening round was electric and hard questioning from them that had been in the bags for weeks. So now im in a position where i know hes angry. He feels antagonize. He was an antagonized that he feels antagonized. He spent those four days started sniffing around the fox newsre u executive to feel me out of bed. Whats the story with her . No one ever told me he was trying to get me pulled from the debate, but it was very clear he was focused on me. Extraordinarily focused on me. Thisll be the biggest news story of people knew they threaten to unleash the beautiful twitter account and called every fox executive in the building. I was not at liberty to reveal that. Panasonic conversation that he had given me permission to reveal, nor did i think it was appropriate. It is something where i is something where i didnt want to screw up the fox news debate and even then i had the sense he might not show if he got angrier and they did not want that. Then we had the thursday debate and i would say the rest is history. So you asked the question [inaudible] was their bullying . In the attacks against you that question prompted not just from trump, the mr. Trumps beautiful twitter account. You have really put under a lot of pressure. I would say there was an attempt to bullying. If you look up the definition in the dictionary, it talks about obtaining a desired effect. He did not obtain the desired effect. But it is a credit to my team at the kelly file that he did it because it was hard to hold the line night after night after night and not cover him too harshly because my life is being threatened and not cover him to gently because i wanted him to his out the nonsense or to please him. I would cover him without fear or favor. And it still works as a journalistic principle. I had a team of people who help me do that. The point i tried to make to donald trump in the interview he had been the point i want othera to know right now is when donald trump comes after you it isnt just a tweet. It is like hes really sweet teen about her. He really is a fighter and he is a counterpuncher. T, i get all that. Even then he had such power that it could unleash how somebodys life. Im not even a civilian. I would say he put me on the Playing Field and i belong to the sideline. The camp of people right out of the sand stand in doing this to them because they criticize him. Most people dont work for a company that met a billion dollars a year and can hire roundtheclock security for somebody like me. Ive been under armed guard for 16 and and my children have been under armed guard. It is not an appropriate price to pay for hardhitting journalists of. [applause] do you worry, megyn that in this era in which people are subject to did most extreme tote what youve been subjected to, but pretty much every journalist i know who covered this campaign has had some form of what youvu been through. There will be a knock on effect, which means the powers are not held to account in the way that they should be. I should point out that it doesnt just come from individual politicians. What happens when a politician turns on you is that arafat is turned on youtube. It really is an army of being in that position myself being deceased by attack. If youre a woman, its a misogynistic attack, too. I do worry about younger reporters and reporters with very little means. It costs a lot of money to have roundtheclock security. I will say this, too. The vast majority of supporters are not at all this way. In fact, i have millions share the kelly file that night. And i know that there are so many people out there who say t about donald trump and i love you, too. I dont like what he said about you and maybe they say i dont really like your first question to him. But they can hold those two ideas in your head. Its that far corner of the internet that really enjoys nastiness and threats and unfortunately there is a man who works for donald trump whose job it is to stir these people up and that man needs to stop doing that. His name is dan skipping out. [applause] the internet is a nasty place. It somehow allows people to be that much more vicious. I think if they put their names to the things they write they wouldnt right path to success. Crosses over a physical threat, you have to start paying attention. Do you watch her show at home when its broadcast later . Nol linklater on the dvr . Not usually, no. I dont get home until 11 30, midnight. If im lucky, my husband doug is still awake and will have a glass of wine and talk about our day and talk about her kids and we will talk about how the showt went. He will watch it, but i dont usually watch it unless theres something i thought was bad on it and then i watch it before every fox news. We screwed that up. Wendi giusto impostors syndrome and how did you overcome it . Well, that is an interesting question. I feel like i havent really had huge selfconfidence problems ib my life. Im not somebody whos like i have no confidence. I need to be built up and i think that is a gift to my parents realism, the radical honesty. Y. I never thought i was presenting an unpleasant because they just assumed i was mediocre at most things and as it turned out i was better than mediocre, great, ill pursue this. But i would say that when i wass a lawyer, i was definitely not the smartest lawyer in the race. People were first in their class than most people have special brains. They just do. I would just work 10 times harder than anybody so that i could hang and i did hang. I was right there with them, but it was exhausting. And i would say socially socially i dont know how i want to put this. I have some insecurities of socially. I write in the book about how Sheryl Sandberg and i became friends after the segment i did one time. She knew i was going after the fortune most powerful womens conference and she wasnt going to be there, but she was going w to be there the next day and she wanted me to meet all these great women she knew. Im going to connect to via email and you should meet this amendment to bar the friday night before the saturday comp rates. Okay, great. These are powerful women, luminaries of business. So now comes the time im supposed to walk in and meet up with the women. Im walking through the bar, thinking [inaudible] i am thinking to myself, no one is going to stop me because they dont really want me. Thats what im thinking of myself. Has this ever happened to you. One of the problems we all have a lot to the buyer. I nobody stops me. I had to work up to encourage to walk back to the bar i tried and going back and ordered room service. The next day i sat like this and they interviewed me. I told that story. All the women i was supposed tow meet up with and the most extraordinary thing happened. My email lit up with all those women saggy and we didnt see you. We would have loved to have seen you. Ive picked another day. I believed it and i thought a. Sometimes youre your own worst enemy. Socially i played more of those games that may have been professionally. You started about going to wd this. I think you say you wanted to be invulnerable in that win he realized them into a surround themselves other women who project on this train and no humanity. I think it was roger ailes who said to you, you were trying to be too perfect. I would think that television iy an xray and you can tell who somebody is. If you are faking it, everyone is going to know. You had to learn something. This is sort of the hall moment of the book and the beginning of my decision to settle for more in my life. Mori means more from yourself. It doesnt mean more money or more goods. It means more from yourself. O ive gotten a fox news committed to broadcast television as a professional living and the massive chain that started to come into me from all different circles was the same. First i had a negative experience from someone in the fox sparrow, a woman in brit hume sunday right after it happened. He was always my mentor and kind and he pulled me in and said to you know what your problem is . Youre just as older bolus anybody else that you project your vulnerability. Do people think they can hurt you or they tried to make think they can do it with impunity. Roger ailes had me up to his office and he said love the whole package, the voice, the look, everything. Now who is the real you. I was like what you mean . What are you talking about . It is supposed bullying me. Like you can hurt me. Im fine, im good. I am strong. This is the first time somebody was asking me to take offtheshelf, which is scary. And then, i was seeing a therapist because i was iterated within my first husband. We are still friends. He remarried, had three kids. I was struggling with that decision. A therapist i was referred to in the book as my lady, amy and saved me. She offered me the same challenge. She was seeing the same thing she wanted me to go to a womens group. I was like all screwed up at waa night . Twice a week. I was tardy on tv. M that megyn kelly from fox news. A it was amazing. They were so brutally honest. It was extraordinary. I read about this in more detail, but one night i came in. Women at fox were going out for a drink and they didnt ask me to go with them. My feelings were so hurt. This is a bit like the party. Im i the only one who feels like they dont want me, like maybe they dont want me or maybe there is something about me that they dont want. So i did feel that again. I went to the womens group to said they were right outside of my door. They were talking about the happy hour and they didnt ask me. I thought is going to to get a soft shoulder to cry on. T what i got was something even better, which was honesty. But one woman in the group said through tears, she said to me, i wouldnt have invited you either. And i was like why . She barely even knew me. And she told me why. She told me it was like the final exclamation point on what i had heard of the and roger and what i was starting to sense in my own life, which was what you project is offputting and kind of intimidating and not that likable. And she said honestly, if i sat next to you, i feel like i would have nothing to relate to a newy comment that you never have a bad hair day, you always have it together. You are little miss perfect, which is one of the chapter titles. For so many years i wouldve heard that and then like good, its working. Last night in that year, 2005 into 2006 was the beginning of my recognition that that was not working for me and it was a very selfdefeating defense mechanism i have been using for years. I am happy to tell you that through a lot of hard work, i did get the shell off and i believe it is the reason i found, may has been and i have the three kids with him i have now. Li its the reason i have truetrugd friendships in a way that i struggled with earlier. I may also absolutely believe its the secret to my success as a broadcaster. [applause] which brings us to this question. You seem so poise. How do you maintain your composure . Shes really not. Shes a mess. I have learned to control my temper. Im Irish Catholic so i have a temper. S the other half is italian. Youll get to know in the book shes no shrinking violet. I am able to control my temper. I think that is the key again back to what it is okay to feel emotional or feel tears coming out or whatever, but you have to play her in the same is true when youre angry. All have moments on the set. Im sure you can think of some or i rival thing, dont get angry. Y. Dont get angry. But i am angry. And then coming in now, dont show your anger. So i can do that. Im not a monkey. I know. I dont have to ask him. I know not to ask him all my instincts. But talk to her talk to ourselves and lock ourselves. And so can you. Roger ailes is seen around the conversations dont rename them in to another revelation you have in the book that you talk about again for the first time is your relationship with roger. I should point out, he was aa great mentor to you. He really helped you at fox. This is hard to tell somebody you are trying to be too perfect and too perfect in effect a change in order to connect, but we think youre great. So he was responsible for launching her career. But the relationship changed. A day. I thought it was important to leave all the good things about roger in the book, even though chapter 24 has become known in my circles with my friends and family the second to last cha chapter. I was out of his league because this scandal broke denied a decision to make. Do i go back and described the book of any kind references to him because i too was learning about and when i was writing chapter 24. In the end, i thought that is dishonest because roger ailes is not all bad. It is not all good. The long and short of it is obviously in a way that is thet chapter of which im almost most proud. Es its the one i worked the hardest on. I wrote that chapter and i rewrote the chapter and i rewrote a chapter about a thousand times. Every word in that chapter has been pored over by me, and my husband doug and buy some Close Friends who i dare to show it to. So you will see the complete picture when you read it. I urge you to do it because i made sure to tell the whole story in context. Ive done all these interviews that have been so annoying. Not this one. Are they one assertive punch you. Why did you come forward earlier . Its like, can i swear here . Listen, fuck you for saying that. You dont get to ask me why i didnt come forward until you ask me if there is a safe reporting of a company may you ask me that question. [applause] that is the headline right there. The stories i joined fox news. It was my dream job. Had only been working parttime and television. He hired me, gave me a great opportunity and 12 months into my tenure he called me up to new york, sat me down, give me a bunch of great advice, including now who is the real you and the untold part of that meeting and others like it was they would coupled with highly inappropriate references. In the beginning, within, i dont speak the queens english as you come to see. Get that . L. Is for you. [laughter] im glad you felt you had to make sure. Got it. I don i also have a body sense of humor. I dont offend that easily. My mom, my nana, they loved dirty jokes. I dont offend easily. I was like okay, this is sort of dont be too uptight and he would cross the science where youre like that isas inappropriate by any measure. You know when that is happening. In the book, i couldve filled for pages with the comments he made. I didnt want to go there. I included it enough so you can decide whether it was sexualu is harassment. I submit to you it is unambiguous because they dont want to be told. They want to see the evidence and judge for themselves. It was a terrifying sixmonth because i understood that my career was on the line. I knew two things. I knew there was no way is going to to do anything with him. And i knew its not because of appearance. Its because of integrity. Oi and i knew that it was very likely this was going to and disastrous late because i assumed at some point its going to escalate from comments to a physical attempt to be with me and i would have to reject it outright, which is the one thing i didnt want to have to do. Da i was dancing the dance for it was like back to work. , ha, so anyway. And that worked okay for me. I would get out of there. All the women are shaking their heads yes. Guys are having such a different reaction to this than men in my life because at least 90 , maybe that is too high, of women have asked us to this in one way shape or form. A lot of men are like wow,it dic really . Anyway, he did culminate in a physical attempt to be with me in his office. Id bet the company for 18i months by that point. I am not the kelly of today. I had no power. I mean, zero. In and he was on the cover of industry magazines of the most powerful man in news and i didnt want to blow up my relationship with him. I wanted to have a Good Relationship. I was doing well at fox news. I was performing well. I was earning their stripes. I wanted that to be the standard by which i was judged. And as soon as they have the physical confrontation in his office and i did not do anything, i ran out of his office. I i hired a lawyer and for theand record, i did tell his supervisor, which is what you are supposed to do. And the long story made short io years went by and i would look for other women. Hers ultimately, years later i found one, but hers happened rightd around the time mine had happened and i convinced myself based on what my supervisor had told me that hes not a bad man, he is just smitten. He might be having marital difficulties. And so when gretchens lawsuit head, i wasnt sure about that one for reasons we dont need to go into, but the allegations that hit that day in the daily beast, three women came forward anonymously. I knew then that i had a decision to make. Because ultimately the companyny had said they were going to conduct an internal review and then somebody told me that roger was working to limit every view to only a small circle of people who had worked directly with gretchen. I knew what that would mean. No onair talent. Not me, not my friend, not any of the other women were probably speaking to the daily beast. You know, i write in the book about how i look at this picture of yardley, my 5yearold. Shes on top of the jungle gym in this white dress with red dots and shes got the blonde hair down in her sneakers on and she had fallen off the monkey bars a week earlier and cracked her head open and she had got stitches, but she was back up on top of the monkey bars and im flipping through my photos ateyo the jersey shore and honestly, i just said this will not have been to one more woman at fox news ever. [applause] and that is when i picked up the phone and i called lock when murdoch and i told him to get his general counsel on the phone. And then i told them about what had happened to me 10 years earlier. And i told them the good and bad about our relationship with him. I didnt want them to think he was some monster. I just wanted them to know this is real and you need to take ans honest look into his behavior. Thats all he wanted, an honest review. If there is nothing there, they would exonerate him. If he went down, he would have only himself to blame and i believe that is where things wound up. You know, this awful stuff about harassment during the course of the campaign in the conversation that has been long overdue because like you i think 90 of women have gone through something similar at some point in their lives and the tendency has always been questions like you have. Why did you come forward . Why didnt you come forward asht if the woman herself is a problem. Blaming the victim has to stop. In the discussion about how we look. Is it that remotely when he was arrested may, as it looks like the lawyer megyn kelly. I had on my long pants and a pants and a navy, gray, brown, black suits. I had not yet been fox aside. Even if you look as gorgeous as you do this he may come it still not okay. So today haters would look at those of us with our false eyelashes and her cute little dresses and say you asked for it, you know, again, thank you for saying it. It had nothing to do with how you dress or look. The woman in canada, the writer, i dont know if you saw it. This is one of the few uplifting parts of incredibly long and exhausting campaign after these stories came out with donald trump. She set up the website and it was just away. She was a writer in canada and said please write if youve had instances of Sexual Harassment in the course of your life. Tens of thousands of women wrote in to her. That was the conversation and i hope we dont drop it. Be so my surrogate got a lot of attention because theyve just written a book. The Unsung Heroes of the episode of the women of fox news who dont have a primetime show, who are at great risk to themselves because no one that he was going to get fired, found the nerve to walk in once the murdoch started an investigation and told their story, to be leaving that he would continue eating their thee boss. I certainly would never outouldn them, but those are the truly courageous ones. Th much harder than it sounds to come forward. We have to do the kelly file at 9 00. Settle for more. Everyone knows youre in the process. Your contract is up in a contract year. Youve book that is the number one New York Times bestseller. Congratulations. That is wonderful. What is the more you want now . What does megyn kelly want more of . Well, i mean, for me it is pretty clear. Im doing a job i love, but theres something i love more. Three Little People and a bit person named doug. We are good. We see each other because hes a writer. He writes books for a living. He actually is a writer. So he is a Flexible Work schedule can see each other. And im pretty open about this. I am missing too much of my children childhood. You know, when i first started this shot but they were just barely four. Recently three, to a newborn. And i had the whole day with them and then id go to work at 3 30 or 4 00 and get home at midnight. Now they are aging and their seven, five and three. And now, two out of my three go to school at 8 15 and dont get home until 3 30 when im walking
