You are watching American History tv, all weekend, every weekend on cspan 3. Cable tv keeps me thinking. Brian kenny it really started and rural areas. A lot of the cities do not have it until the late 1970s and early 1980s. The cable center is a Nonprofit Organization founded by the Cable Television pioneers whose main mission is to tell the story of the cable industry. Cable grew out of the fact that tv signals cannot get into the valleys. So cable started as Community Antenna television. The idea was to put up the antenna on the hill, collect the signal, send it back down to peoples homes. In 1973, hub shaftly, the inventor of the teleprompter and the cable company, he demonstrated at the anaheim cable tv show that you could use a portable earth station to distribute the signal. You can get the cable tv signal from the satellite and send it to any had head in. That totally changes the business. Cable is in tune and in touch. It gets better with commercial free entertainment. That is what makes hbo possible. That is why you get the start of like the superstitions like tbs, the turner station. Then the food network. Thats the second generation. The thirdgeneration in the mid1990s is the start of the broadband era. Cable modems start offering services. Broadband Internet Services for data is a big thing. That is in the mid to late 1990s. Also phone services is also coming as well. The question is are we at the end of that . Is there a fourth generation coming as the technologies converge . We are down here in the technology archive. We have about 2500 items here. This is a unique arrangement. This is stuff in signal order. Dave willis, the curator emeritus of this collection auto that. And set up chronologically. Stuffeans the antenna with the signals are collected and head and equipment is of the front then moves to the line , equipment where the signals moving through the path. Here we actually have the coax cable and some oldstyle wire. Then he goes to the consumer settop boxes. Then we have test equipment. There is an overarching arrangement to this. Some of my favorite pieces, we have some coffee can amplifiers. We have homemade. We have great old analog tube equipment. Early manufacturer. We have homemade test equipment like this piece right here. Tv where thed added a amperage meter to the top. This was from pennsylvania. These are the items that we are going to scan for our Virtual Reality project. You will be able to look at these, handle them, interact with them in our Virtual Reality online exhibit. Dont let a dvb the monster in your living room. Pay tv and Cable Tv Companies are seeking the right to charge you for the very programs you now get free. The cable industry has faced a lot of challenges. Early on, the broadcasters thought that their signals were being stolen and did not want cable to exist. You had to overcome that. You had to overcome regulatory hurdles. They were monday and but important things like whole attachments. Can we attach the poll the cable to the poll just to build our plant . Then it was vcrs. That is a threat. Are the phone Companies Going to come into our business . You have more competition coming in. And then it was satellite. Direct broadcast satellite. At each time they have to face these huge challenges that affected the core of the business. Now is the same thing with the overthetop. As you track the changes and see how cable respondent and what cable has brought to society. And lets us decide what is important so we can Grow Together and i like that. Imagine a world with three or four networks. Cable brought choice. What is next is a lot of change. A lot of changes currently going on. There are some people that think the Cable Operators will turn into basically broadband providers. There is movement where some of the smaller Cable Companies, theyre talking about wanting to be Broadband Companies, not specifically offering television. They want out of the television business. They want to be Broadband Companies that offer a Great Customer experience. They provide you the technology to get whatever you want. They do not want to be the ones passing the price increases from espn or whatever. If you want to contract, it is a view to negotiate the price. I think a lot of change, a lot i think a lot of regulatory changes are coming with title ii regulation ofthe Cable Companies and internet providers.
