Ways your assessment of how the media covered the highly emotional testimony . Mollie i dont know if i have ever seen such a reprehensible performance by the media. They have thrown out any devotion to facts in favor of emotion. They were talk about emotion, they werent talking about actual facts, actual news. It was frustrating and angering to watch because they thanked thrown off any semblance of objectivity. In politics you expect republicans to be one way and the democrats to be another. But for the media to align themselves with Party Politics is frustrating and unacceptable and it should not be tolerated in any way. Howie what i saw on the hearing day was a rough consensus during the breaks that Christine Ford had been a credible and sympathetic witness. But the New York Times front page headline yesterday took exception to his tone, calling it a diatribe. Susan what was unusual here is he directly addressed the democrats and went back to the original confirmation hearing which he called an embarrassment. Howie and he talked about clintons. Susan he gave them talking points. That was highly unusual. But Ruth Bader Ginsburg has come out against donald trump in the past. So its not that the Supreme Court is devoid of politics. I might note in the midst of this what bothered me the most of, this had to do with a meeting where he is said to have raced wearing a wire at the white house to assess President Trumps ability to serve as president. We were given an explanation of that event is he was being criticized at a meeting by colleagues for being too soft on trump. His rebuttal was what do you want me to do, wear a wire . A sarcastic rebuttal. It was reported wildly that he was joking. A sarcastic rebuttal to criticism is not a joke. Yet you are still hearing it to this day. Howie a number of women have come out with their own stories of Sexual Assault. Kellyanne conway had this to say. I feel very empathetic of victims of Sexual Assault and Sexual Harassment and rape. I am the victim of Sexual Assault. I dont expect judge kavanaugh or jake tapper or jeff flake or anybody to be held responsible for that. Howie does it have an impact for the white House Counsel to come out and say that on National Television . Brit this stuff happens, and i think thats true, and i think its disturbing. On the other hand, consider the moment jeff flake is subjected to. Hes standing in an elevator and there was a woman who says she was the victim of Sexual Assault and she is screaming at him that his vote to confirm kavanaugh is telling her she doesnt matter. I understand the womans emotion. But thats utter nonsense. There is too much of that around. We have seen too many examples, rolling stone, uva. Howie you went to the university and you were sceptical of that piece of gang rape at a fraternity. Without implying or insinuating Christine Ford was telling the truth, do you think many in the media refuse to consider a man might be falsely accused . Brit i think that undergirds his anger at the senate panel. He spoke about the whole thing being a circus. Howie including the media. Brit i think that represents a failure to em, to empathize with him. How would you react if you were being accused of sex crimes in an open forum without corroboration. You would be enraged, and he was. It was a one for one match between her emotions and his anger. Howie you said you thought Christine Ford was a sympathetic witness. Brit i did. Howie but you said kavanaughs strategy was to be mad as hell. Brit i dont think there is reason to be cynical about either of these people. If we have evidence of that, lets see it. There is no reason to believe these are heartfelt reactions. She obviously was in anguish telling this story. I would say she is credible in the sense i think she believes it and i think she is sincere. That doesnt mean her recollection is correct. If you believe kavanaugh believes hes innocent, you would find it understandable. Howie the coming has become all too partisan. Coming up. Ford and judge kavanaugh, i dont know what information the fbi thinks they are going to obtain or what the Democratic Senators think the fbis 302s will give them. But they will have no excuses after the fbi gives them the information unless they want to play partisan politics which this has evolved into. Howie at his News Conference the other day the president was asked personal questions from cnn and cbs about his own experiences in this area. Let me play a sound bite. How did those impact your opinions on the allegations. President trump it does impact my opinion. I have had a lot of false charges made against me. So you say does it affect me in terms of my thinking with respect to judge kavanaugh, absolutely. Because i have had its times. Howie i thought that was a pretty candid answer on the president s part. He says you cant separate what he views as false Sexual Misconduct allegations against him. It fuels the media saying he always seems to side with the men. Corey he said he thought the testimony dr. Ford gave gave was very compelling and have much in line with what she believes happened and he was very moved by that. He has been clear about that. This is the media trying to hone in on one thing and not looking at what the president said about this. So they can clear judge kavanaugh of these charges or at least get to the bottom of it. You have to remember, everybody comes to situations with their own personal experience behind them. To think it hasnt impacted him, knowing he has been accused of similar things the past that we know have no basis and no merit is of course weighing on him. Thats yes is moving forward with the investigation. I think what you will find is judge calf enough is going to have his final arbitration where hell be confirmed as the next justice of the Supreme Court. I have seen multiple feeds on twitter from outlets that say Brett Kavanaugh was angry. The usa today editorial said potentially he should not be coaching Girls Basketball and they had to change that. Thats a disgusting display. Thats making the news, not reporting the news. This man coached his daughters and friends Basketball Program and usa today is saying he should be off the court until this is resolved . Thats a liberal bias the American People are sick of. They say hes likely to be convicted and even if he is, it will hurt the Republican Party in the mid terms because the gop will be responsible for putting kavanaugh on the high court. Corey i dont believe that. I think this is an issue that unites the republicans. This man has been impugned. His reputation and his familys has been attacked. The testimony that it thought was the most compelling when he talked about his 10yearold daughter asking for a prayer for dr. Ford. That tells you something about the character of this man who raised his children to do the right thing. Establishment republicans or trump republicans are unified in their support saying we want to see Brett Kavanaugh confirmed. And that is driving them, thats energizing them to show up in just over five weeks to show up on election day. Howie that was a touching moment. Martha its always dangerous to judge what happens in the news before it happens. Anyone who calls themselves a journalist or media analyst would be so quick to jump the gun before the actual event. Howie unlike the angry Brett Kavanaugh we saw at the hearing. When he sat down with you, many journalists points out he seemed cautious and sticking to talking points. Were you cautious of that . Martha absolutely. It was very clear to me that he and his wife, they were understandably nervous and up tight about this. They obviously talked about the line he wanted to remember to say and hammer home as anybody does when they are going into a difficult situation like that. I felt he was simmering beneath the surface. It was almost as if he had a cork in the top. But it was very clear there was a lot of emotion going on. When we saw him coming to that hearing this week it was clear the cork had popped, and he was sticking to any sort of talking points, and he knew how important it was for him to fully express himself. I think when he looks back on that, he probably looks back on monday as an enlightening experience in terms of how he wanted to express himself if he wanted to be convincing. Howie you could sense the tension underneath. Were you surprised when judge kavanaugh volunteered he didnt have sexual intercourse until many years after high school. Martha i went through all three different allegations with him. The woman we now know as julie swetnick, Debra Ramirez and dr. Ford. We didnt know her name at that point. But that allegation was out there. That was the point when i asked about the gang rape allegations, him being in the hallway standing in line to participate in Something Like this. Thats when he was extremely emotional and launched him into that alibi saying that wasnt me. I would never do that and i didnt have sex in high school and for many years after that. Clearly he thought it was so objec soabhorrent. Howie why did you decide to include that . You knew it would be bubbling up afterwards . Martha i didnt necessarily not would bubble up afterwards. But it was well out there in the Public Domain and people were discussing it. And i wanted to give him an opportunity to respond to it, and im glad i did, because there was a name attached to it within 48 hours after that. That is the tricky thing in covering these stories. There are so many wild allegations. We saw another allegation coming out of rhode island that was shot down by the person who presented it in the first place. I put it out there, it was in the Public Domain and i asked him to respond based on what we knew at the time. Howie you tried to get kavanaugh to talk about the motivations of his accusers and he continually deflected. Were you conscious of that. Martha absolutely. Howie was it frustrating that he wouldnt go there . Martha it was frustrating because i could sense in him he was extremely frustrated by what he saw, the powers behind this. He said i didnt do this. I said where do you think this is coming from . What do you think is behind this. And he said i dont know. But between monday and when we saw the hearing later in the week he clearly had decided there was no reason for him to hold back on that. Howie given you knew he had the only interview given the huge stakes with the Supreme Court, did you feel a lot of pressure . Martha absolutely. We put in a request for him some time ago. Supreme Court Nominees dont do interviews. It was clearly a unique situation. And when they did give us the go ahead that he wanted to sit down. I did feel a big responsibility to the public and also to him, and i felt it was very important to get those allegations to him as difficult as some of them were to talk about in front of him and his wife. I felt it was important for the American Public to watch his response to them and gauge what they thought and see how they gaged his responses.
