Report, that unemployment report for the month of august. Right now the nations jobless rate sits at 6. 2 but the real Unemployment Rate jumps to 12. 2 . When you factor in all those who have stopped looking for work because theyve been discouraged. Those working part time who want full time jobs and the marginally attached who want jobs but havent looked in the previous month so how accurate is the jobless picture that we always get from the government every month anyway . As one writer points out in the new york times, quote, the report tries to estimate employment in a big country and to do so quickly, to give policy makers Business Executives and everyone essay sense how the economy is performing. Its a tough task. And its become tougher because americans are less willing to respond to surveys than they used to. This is an excellent point because every time we get this jobs report, there is a lot of criticism and a lot of sort of conspiracy theories that these dont represent the real Employment Situation in the country. I never thought about it until now. How do they do come up with these number snz they call households and and who is unemployment, who is employed, who is looking for work and more and more people are not willing to take the time to answer the surveys. I want to bring in an example, kimberly, of some serious skepticism that, by the way, was fiercely turned down by both democrats and republicans but the former c. E. O. Of General Electric jack welch, he came out and said that he suggested that the numbers were actually rigged in some way. And that they were really combroufing the jobs numbers under the obama administration, making them look a lot better than they were. Inflating them. I like him. I think hes a smart guy and one of the reasons why i think we should believe everything he said is because he spends a lot of time in his hot tub sipping vodka with his love and watching the five. I think hes right about everything. He ought to know. I think hes saying that because he thinks theres cause for concern that perhaps the numbers arent accurately reflecting the large number of americans that are unemployed looking for jobs out there. We talked about the fact that the people are getting perhaps part time or seasonal employment that really isnt going to help bounce the economy in the direction that we needed to go in, in a long term, sustainable way. When we talk about the 6. 2 , its not even including those that have given up because its been so hard to find. Those that dropped out of the labor force. Theyre not usually dropping out because they want to but theyve been induced to. Methodology does matter. When you look at how they do the surveying, there appears to be when you read the article and look into it, some selection bias as far as who answers and who doesnt as far as methodology. They survey them, go back and see if they have a job and thats how they engage the change. Youll more likely to answer the question if you now have a job so youre overinflating the numbers, maybe not intentionally but the numbers in a sense dont fairly represent and how do policy makers make sound decisions about where to go next in a complex economy without good numbers is a problem. When you hear the polls how pessimistic americans are right now and how horrible they feel despite the great jobs numbers that are put out every month, it makes you wonder. I think a lot of people distrust the numbers. Looking at the system, how much people have land line right now . Think of yourself right now, somebody calls, do you really want to answer the questions . People are worried about privacy rights right now so i think the whole system seems disconnected and americans sitting at home often say the numbers sound really good but theyre not accounting for the friend i know who stopped looking for work six months ago or the other friend i know who has two part time jobs but cant get a full time job. In reality, and i think peoples daily lives and what theyre living Impact Politics more than anything the politicians can throw out there. This is how its always been down. Now theyre cooked doesnt really make sense to me. It would have always been cooked. I think its i dont know that its a cooking of the books, per se, of this administration. I the inflation of how good things have gotten. When you do talk to your neighbor, you look in the community, that out of the labor force number continues to go up. Despite the question of whether or not theyre rigged, which im not even going that route, its whether or not theyre actually representing the real Employment Situation. Is there a better way to do it . Looking at tax returns or anything like that, cant they tell . We want them to employ good methodology, have their heart in the right place so more americans put money on their pockets. Were learning there might n be a whole lot of work getting done on capitol hill or maybe the most of the work is all for not. This Current Congress is on track to become the least Productive Congress in history. So whats behind the apparent inability of democrats and republicans to Work Together . Maybe you need to look no further than the Senate Dining room. It used to be a bustling place where republican and democratic lawmakers would sit down, get together over a sandwich and talk face to face. Now the dining room is a virtual ghost town. One aide says its indicative of the hyper partisanship that surrounds the senate these days. The downfall of collegiality is symbolized by the number of those going to the dining room or maybe the food just sucks. Maybe they just have green juice in the dining room and like bone sprouts or some kale situation and maybe nobody wants to eat that except you. Ill be the only one attending that. Youll be first in line. I think when youre social, i think it bridges gaps. You have these ideological differences. It makes you more apt to want to hear what they have to say. You become friendlier. With that being said, i think there are huge differences not only between the right and the left right now but even if you just take for the right, you have the tea party wing, the libertarian wing, the establishment ring wing. To be more social sdshgs it help . Absolutely. Not just in politics. I dont have any sympathy. I disagree with you guys all the time, right . Were still friends. Theres no you dont share a sandwich with me and youve had some good ones. I would. Im friends with lots of people that im on with all the time and this idea that you cant now because we have such great ideological differences, there are always ideological differences. What if we were to sit down and put together an immigration plan . I think i could work with you. I think i recognize that good people have different ideas, right . Its not a mean spirited thing. People have different world views. There are also practical reasons why this is happening. Modern politics which theres a ton of fund raising that goes on, a lot more travel back to the district. You dont want to be an outside er. It used to be neighbors with the democrat you were working with. You got to know them. Im kind of two minds here. Bipartisanship is not the holy grail. Its given us bad policy, too. At the same time, republicans and democrats just sitting down, stripping away the characterizations and saying, were two human beings who want the same outcome but we have different paths to get there, sitting down over lunch can go a long way over Something Like this. Were going to have dinner together. We know what to expect. I cant wait to see what thats like. Well see what policy comes out of that. I agree with you. I dont have any sympathy for this but i do think that you have to look at the chief, the commander in chief for some sort of leadership here because we obviously know the tone that hes set in washington and thats that hes not getting anybody together on anything right now. I dont know. Im not hes in if for himself. Im interested in your take there. I think theres more ideological differences and so maybe maybe that would account for it. I dont know how much they look to the president. I think the president can be pretty divisive but i think that this has been going on for awhile. And i think theres something very childish about it, i think. I do think if you go back in time, look. Newt gingrich and bill clinton disagreed on everything. They still had a relationship. They still were able to get together and do things. Right . So theres a segment of the population that really likes that dig in your heels mentality. I think on both sides they dont want to bend. They dont want you they want to elect people who go in there on principles and stand for something so i think thats battling this compromise principle. Thats where the incentives are for the politicians. Thats different than the behindthescenes thing. Why cant they be friends behindthescenes . They need to get a better chef. They need to have like big, juicy burgers. Extra olives. All right. Theres a group that is said to be hardest hit by the recession. New Research Shows millennials seems the most secure behind future finances. Whats behind this optimism . Its a long tradition to gather the family around the table for dinner but it could soon be a thing of the past. Well tell you whats behind the decline of family dinner time. So you say men are superior drivers . Yeah . Then howd i get this. [ voice of dennis ]. Safe driving bonus check . Every six months without an accident, allstate sends a check. Silence. Are you in good hands . S charlie. Silence. His long day of doing it himself starts with back pain. And a choice. Take 4 advil in a day or just 2 aleve for all day relief. Honey, you did it baby laughs welcome back to outnumbered. They are the group saddled with Student Loan Debt and living at home well into adulthood. Yet millennials are least worried about finances. About 30 of 18 to 29yearolds feel more secure about their jobs than a year ago and more than one third of millennials say their overall financial situation is better than a year ago compared to 19 who say it is worse. However, while millennials may feel financially secure, about 70 of them say they have yet to start saving for retirement. So what do you think this is attributed to, this sense that millennials, do they feel like they have a cushion sitting below them in case they fall because theyre living with mom and dad . Yes. A lot are being supported by their parents and they probably expect their parents are going to loaf them money and theyll be taken care of. Thats the only explanation i can come up with. I dont look into the future and feel particularly secure. Its a pretty perilous theres no consequences. Its a bailout generation. Theyre too young to fail in the sense theyve looked at whether its wall street banks or that will be covered. Theyll be bailed out. Theres no consequence. My loans, i may not even have to pay them back. Theres discussion about that. I dont think theyre worried about the actual consequences of a free market and theyre not thinking about the consequences. Of course not. Thats ridiculous. Theyre happy. Were asking them if they feel financially secure now when the millennial generation is still in their 20s. Everybody feels like theyll be fine later on. Theyll get jobs and make money. Thats not quite the situation. They have yet to purchase assets. Theyre not buying homes, not acquiring assets, no mortgages. I was when the 20s, im a generation xer. I felt very much like things were not good. They actually ended up getting really good in the 1990s but they were not good at the beginning and it was pretty scary. Were also talking about 18 to 29yearolds. Its a grown person who should be thinking 10 years down the road at that point, right . Yeah. I dont know. Thats not their immediate worry. They feel like the super hero complex. They are going to fight off anything, survive, be able to afford the things they want. Look. Im all about optimism but you also have to be realistic as all and start putting money away and have financial planning. You do . I have to start some of that. 401k and another husband. And theyll be a harsh reality not to follow up something amusing that kimberly says. Theres a harsh reality later on because theyre not saving. They may not be buying asset but theyre not also saving. 70 of them are in their mid to late 20s and they havent even started putting any money away for retire many. But moms basement is also there. They call them the boomerang generation. They go out and boomerang right back home. Good luck. I look at unemployment numbers, july 2014 for 18 to 29yearolds, 10. 5 . Even if they have a job, dont they look to their friends . There has to be young people around them struggling. Are they not paying attention or are they thinking it will work out okay . Its disconnect. Its different time, different generation. I hope the best for them. We want them to get jobs. Its a tough environment right now. Their parents hold the jobs they would normally be going to get out of college because businesses would rather pay less for that worker than hire somebody new straight out of college and train them. Theyre hiring for less. The economy may be getting killing the traditional family dinner. While half of American Families say they eat dinner together five days a week, half say they dont. Thats because more families are having a harder time finding time to eat together. Due largely to longer working hours and commuting w. More peopleily later in life, theres a dramatic rise in the number of Single Family households. 50 of all meals are eaten by solo diners. Kimberly believes that. I believe that. I often eat alone. I do. I eat my little boys leftovers. Its hard. I do. Im basically made out of macaroni and cheese and broccoli. I get home from work and i would rather have him eat and he has a snack, second dinner after so thats the reality of what happens. I wish it wasnt that way because i find it so charming and nice to be able to sit as a family, be able to talk about the day and do all of that and i dont give up hope for that to happen. But nevertheless, you have to be realistic about times and schedules. And it is important. I remember some of my best conversations i ever had with my family was sitting around the dinner table. At the time it was kind of big family so we were not always altogether but we did make an effort to sit down. It is a moment. Dinner sometimes is difficult for me and i travel a lot so its breakfast. I get up at 6 00, 7 00, i have a 4yearold and 2yearold and were all shovelling cereal in our face. Thats when you connect. What are they doing today . What are they going to do tomorrow . Who is your teacher . All the things that you should do. Youre right. It could become breakfast. It does for me. I dont know why. Dinner, theres so much going on. You have your devices, youre checking in, duel earner, single parent homes, complications. As long as theres time spent, i dont know that dinner has to be the time. Breakfast is the new dinner. You heard it here first. Youre like about tweeting your dinner every night. And i come from a crazy italian family who every sunday you would gather around. My grandmother used to chase my grandfather around the table with a wooden spoon. It was good times. I feel like its hard every day. People have crazy schedules, part time jobs, full time jobs, work from home but if you can get one sunday or saturday on the weekend where you all sit down and connect, it does so much to strengthen the bond of the family. I just think that its the schedules now. Growing up, we used to eat dinner at 5 30. My dad was home. He worked a hes a professor but it was a 9 00 to 5 00 job and he left at 5 00, he was home, walked through the door and we sat down and ate dinner at the same time every night. I dont think a professor today can work 9 00 to 5 00. You have to stay longer. Is that societal or economic . Is that sort of everyone is stretched so thin, theyre working longer or is there a social fabric breakdown here . I think its both, dont you . I think its both. People feel more its more precarious. You sort of feel like if i dont put in the extra time, if im the first one to leave and everyone else is staying there, am i going to lose my job . Back then everyone was leaving at 5 00. You dont work after 5 00. People have to realize its an effort. Its not easy. Youre pointing out its a difficult thing to do but an important thing to do. I know in my family, we definitely make an effort to make it happen but the early one is funny. I think we did eat really early as well. I hope everybody is having hot dogs and hamburgers on this labor day and enjoying that. Is that what every generation does . I was playing wiffle ball next door and my mom yelled and my dad was driving up. Thats how i remember it. It was 5 30. Literally thats the middle of the day. People are working longer and staying up later, i guess. All right. Election day is now just a little more than two months away. Can you believe it . And republicans are gaining momentum in their effort to take back the senate. A look at what to expect as lawmakers prepare to return from summer break. And two young men are speaking out against ladies night at local bars. Why they say its sexist. My gosh. You pay your Auto Insurance premium every month on the dot. Youre like the poster child for paying on time. And then one day you tap the bumper of a station wagon. No big deal. Until your Insurance Company jacks up your rates. You freak out. I got to be pretty good at managing my symptoms, except that managing my symptoms was all i was doing. When i finally told my doctor, he said my crohns was not under control. The senate is back from the long summer break, one week from today. And right now its looking like republicans are gaining ground in the race for control of the senate. To regain control, theyll have to pick up six seats, one g. O. P. Strategist is saying the way it looks now, he thinks republicans can win even more than that. So this is for awhile theyve been thinking that the republicans will win back the senate. A lot of these democrats are keeping it neck and neck. Its not quite the slam dunk that republicans were expecting it to be. I dont think its going to be a huge slam dunk, either. I dont think more than six. I would be very surprised and i never underestimate the power of republicans to mess things up last minute. I dont. Recently i met with some independent voters sitting around a table and talking about issues that really matter to them when theyre going to the voting booth and they were talking about the economy and jobs, health care costs, education and immigration. And my concern if i were a democrat would be what do i point to in those areas as successes to rev up my voter . Ic the republicans have more to pull from. They can still tackle obamacare, talk about the economy, school church, talk about border security. Whether theyll do that well and efficiently, whole other topic here. I think what she says is right. They definitely have a stronger hand to play which is why i think people were expecting them to do well and yet even in a lot of red states where obama is incredibly unpopular, theyre neck and neck and some cases the democrats are even running ahead. Incumbents are difficult to beat and while there arent a lot of republicans under siege, mc connell is sort of the only one in play. Incumbents have done a good job distancing themselves from president obama so a mark pryor or Mary Landreau have tried to get away. I dont know if theyve been effective but you look at races like iowa which should have been strong with democrats is neck and neck. You have New Hampshire which looked really strong for awhile and now scott brown has a new poll out and has it even. Even some states that democrats thought were a firewall are at least contested and a lot of other states like arkansas are looking stronger for republicans. So getting to six is possible but incumbents are hard to beat. Theres still a lot of time. Anything could happen. I go back to harry reids comment. If the election were held today, we would be just fine. But the election is not today. I think thats a big point to be made right now. So much can happen and anything can pop up, whether its foreign policy, the economy, a couple of months is a long time. Sure is. Anything can happen. Thats what makes it exciting and interesting to cut from on a daily basis but quite frankly, i hope they take this moment. Its about as good as it gets for them and i think theyre peaking the momentum at the right time so hopefully that should play it all out. The republicans have good candidates, trend lines are headed in the right direction for them overall so the ones where they have small leads are now larger and the other ones are closer to even and the democrats have had some misfits. Bruce braley in iowa is talking about farmers. I think all that on the side of republicans, why arent they doing better . It does seem strange if the democrats are weighted down with so many things and whats your answer to that . I think the democrats have some good candidates and i think the incumbent thing is definitely a big issue. Historically republicans in particular have had a hard time taking out democratic incumbents. A couple of days ago, they talked about literally the last 40 years that every now and then can take one out. Nobody likes congress. But everyone likes their congressman or senator and theres a lot of that involved here. The other problem is i think solutions. Lets say you dont like obamacare. Where is the alternative . Where is the republican alternative . I dont think people feel inspired to make that change and that goes from midterm elections, president ial elections. People will say, maybe this is the lester of two ooels. You have to be inspired about going elsewhere. Incumbents shouldnt be hard to beat. You should be able to put out a charismatic candidate that can put together a positive, pro growth agenda that should be able to beat these people. You have an antiwashington trend growing across the country, antiestablishment trend. People are hungry for new leadership. It seems to me the republicans dont pounce when it comes to ideas and cant get through with good messaging. I dont think democrats will keep distancing themselves from the president the next couple of months . I think the ones in the red states will do that. Most of the people in the competitive races, i think, will definitely do that. Kay hagen is criticizing the president on the v. A. Specifically. These people do generally disagree with the president because theyre from a more conservative state. Thats normal. They wouldnt have gotten elected in the first place if they were liberals. True. What a smart show. Im going to do my best to dumb it down right now. This is getting too much, people. Youre hurting my head. Lets talk about boys. Two male students at the university of North Carolina speaking out against ladies night at local bars. They say it is sexist and the one bar offers free drinks or free entry. Theyre telling guys, thats where all the girls will be. Thats on objectifying women. Do you have any girlfriends at all . Why are you such hate erhaters . Why . We pay more for our dry cleaning. Let me get cheaper new york tea. Guys were complaining about this. Theyre the same guys that read like the free newspaper on the Street Corner looking for the nickel beer specials. Amen, sister. They aint going out with you. Thats the thing. What do you think . Do you like freebies or discounts . I dont understand who these guys are. Of course. And also, thats whats going to bring people into the bar. Whats the problem . If youre there to meet girls, wouldnt you want them to be there . Right . I dont get this piece. Help us out. You would want them to be there, having a drink with you, talking to you, engaged, enjoyable vierm. They interviewed bar owners there and said when the customers start complaining, then ill do something. But the customers show up because its ladies night. The guys want to be there. The girls want to be there. Thats what bars are for. One of the gois told the daily tar heel, i dont think a lot of women really realize that theyre actually a product being sold. Come on, man. Youre kidding, right . That says more about these guys, right . It does. Women being sold. Thats not what it is at all. I cant think of one guy i know that doesnt want to walk into the bar and be outnumbered by a ton of ladies. My guy friends walk in and say i dont need any dudes here. I have the ladies all by myself. Maybe this is where i was in school. I was in baton rouge but if i saw a ladies night sign, i assumed that it meant that it was all guys in there all the time that particular evening so we didnt really do ladies night. You thought it was desperate guys hoping to meet girls at ladies night. Interesting. This is like your other thing. That might actually be true. Thank you, pete. You go in certain bars so you dont get hit on . Shes totally about that. Lets go to commercial break. Take it down a notch. Okay. Yeah. Heres my point. These guys, if they get one lucky night to have some fun at a ladies night, they will change their tune entirely. Get lucky. What does that mean . You mean the two guys protesting. Yeah. They wouldnt be like this. They wouldnt be complaining to the daily tar heel. They wouldnt be doing that. The paper of record, ill have you know. Poor things. He said hes actually going to start a Campaign Starting sexism in the College Night life. This guy needs a spring break or Something Real fast. You keep growing. It gets expensive, especially like little boys. Its rough. Its rough. But its fun to go. You start off the new year with like new stuff, new clothes, new backpacks, trapper keepers, thats super old school. But you buy it online. Amazon prime. Thats my best friend. Do you think that online boom, like a lot of young people go to amazon. Its no longer the same bonding experience. I used to go to the store with my dad and mom and pick out school supplies. Has that technology changed the whole dynamic of back to school, do you think . Yes. But im eager to tell you how much i loved back to School Shopping. You know i was a nerd and i loved school. Did you have perfect attendance . I did. You do, too . Perfect attendance. Look at us. And in law school. Wow. Thats good. Now, thats good. I think that theres an element to it. I got so geekd out, i have to move over here. Parents took you together. I begged to go get like new erasers. I can believe that. Im the youngest of six kids. I dont know if i can even help you now. Im imagining sandra highlighting the new schedule and hole puncture. I never got the hole puncture. Why . I i wanted it. I had to use the one at the school. You have kids. Whats it like in your house . Is this like back to school boom . Theyre too young. Theyre four and two so theyre not there yet but im laughing and sort of making fun but i think i was the exact same way. I knew it. Right angles, trapper coopers, all of it. It was a seminole event. You always go with mom because shes a little loose in the checkbook. She might buy an extra pair of pants or shirt but you wanted one or two cool outfits for the first day of school. Now today, my wife is a subscriber to amazon prime. Thats like all she did. It comes online. I dont know how that doesnt change the entire system. I loved it. It was my favorite thing, going out and picking out the right folders and putting together your and now were smarter. Wee we start off the fall. I used to think about, what folder would math be . Black folder. What folder would spanish be . Blue. Sandra and i would have been a nightmare. I did the same thing. What a bunch of in other words we are, man. Theres some truth to the saying, once a cheater, always a cheater. According to a new study, people who cheat are 3 1 2 times more likely to do it again. Researchers found that of those who had had sex with someone outside their first relationship about 45 said they also had outside sexual contact with someone else in their next relationship. Psychologists say cheating can become a default mechanism for some people when a relationship gets rocky and that some people have value systems that make them feel entitled to cheat. So i guess heres a question. Who here has cheated . No. Im serious. Never cheated on a boyfriend ever. Not once. Anybody . No comment. I mean im not going there. No. No. Listen. Pull a lois lernor. Plead the fifth. Sometimes its easy to say this kind of stuff about other people. You know, im not a cheater but other people have cheated. How about you . I know that people have lets do a reveal. Ive kissed another person while i was dating somebody but ive never done anything more than that and usually then i just broke up with the person. It was always sort of on the way out. Im not defending it but i have done that. I do know i have friends who were sort of casanovas and did cheat and then are now happily married and are very faithful. I think thats to the point. 45 cheated in the next relationship. It doesnt have to be that way. People change, people find that right relationship and i think thats it was also interesting that those who have been cheated on were three times more likely to be cheated on in their next relationship as well. Im not saying you get blamed for that but the study found those cheated on were more likely to be cheated on. The sex therapist who quoted this very thorough article in fox news magazine, the sex therapist says some people believe theyre en titled to cheat if they believe their relationship is on the rocks, somebody is not meeting their needs, then theyre okay doing it. They go do that and then get back together and the next time the relationship they compared it to drinking or other vices people have from when things arent going the way they want it. Theyre talking about guys there. Theyre talking about a guy. Theyre talking about a guy they do but a guy would say my needs arent being met here and they treat it as a transactional thing more than a relationship thing. Its widely known. Male, females, male relate sexually different than women do. I dont know if entitled would be the right word but they probably feel like this is a separate part of my life. Nothing to do with my relationship. They think as long as nobody finds out, nobody gets hurt z. Its the culture thing as well. They have the wife at home, the girlfriend or the mistress and its like society accepted. They have greeting cards for mistresses. No, they dont. They do. Do they really . We had it on outnumbered last week. I think there are people who cheat like when theyre young and then they do change. They do reform. I have friends that were real bad boys and then met someone they were crazy about and then that lifestyle stopped. I think there are people who make cheating a lifestyle. Would you date a guy if you knew he had cheated on a prior relationship . Or would you have an open mind . I would probably not go out with him just because i would feel like that was a person who had a propensity toward lying and i feel like it transcends, usually. What if they admitted it and that relationship ended and they were on the market. You have to look at the life. You can usually tell if someone is going to repeat a mistake. I think the most revealing thing is that men see a big difference between emotional cheating and mechanical cheating. And some women do, too. Its the same thing. As i was. As i was. All right.
