We are waiting remarks from the president during his first Cabinet Meeting of the new year. Congressional leaders invited to the white house for a briefing with the president on Border Security amid a nearly 2week long impasse over funding for the wall. This coming among the funding package, which democrats plan to pass by tomorrow night after taking the house majority. White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders calls that a nonstarter as lawmakers on both sides of the pool to go ill continue to point fingers. I do think there is room here to do the wall, do Border Security, and then provide some temporary sense of stability for daca recipients. I dont know what they find objectionable about that. Do they really think that physical barriers dont help . The opportunity i think for democrats is really to look responsible, to look like we want to open the government, we want to sit down and talk, we want to figure out how to make a deal with the president. I think he is going to be in a lot of trouble is he double back if he continues to look like he is the obstructionist and can be reasoned with. Harris lets get to rich edson outside the white house. Rich question asked good afternoon, harris. After this Cabinet Meeting at 3 00 this afternoon, they will meet with the Top Democrats and republicans in the house and the senate and the situation room. The president says he wants billions of dollars to fund a wall at the southern border. Democrats say they reject that idea as immoral and inefficient. The president has been tweeting on the subject. He says mexico is paying through the wall through the new usmca trade deal. Much of the wall has already been renovated or billed. We have done a lot of work, 5. 6 billion the house has approved is very little in comparison to the benefits of national security. Quick payback. Democrats say they have no idea how a trade deal directly funds a wall. They say they are open to more funding for Border Security, not a wall. Officials say negotiations are essentially stalled over the holiday season. The white house said the administration offered to fund a wall at less than his 55 billion demand, but they rejected the idea. They say the house will vote on two bills tomorrow after they take control over there. One reopens the government until september 30th. All the agencies arent fully funded except for the department of Homeland Security. A second deal would open them to figure is, that would allow for more negotiations over this issue. To that, white House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders says President Trump did a serious goodfaith offer to democrats open the government, address the crisis at our border, and protect all americans. We have heard nothing back from the democrats. The pelosi plan is a nonstarter because it does not fund our Homeland Security or keep American Family safe. If the house passes this bill, it would have to get through the Republicancontrolled Senate and the white house to become a law. The president is already rejecting that. With democrats taking over tomorrow, divided government in washington, you might see that a lot. The house passing a bill in the senate and the white house not signing off on it. First of all, its the first Cabinet Meeting the president has had since october. We are watching to see the developments with regard to that, but there are some new people in the room. [laughter] to say the least. Harris many of them are acting. Chief of staff Mick Mulvaney acting. Patrick shanahan taking over defense as jim mattis has just left. He is acting, as well. Youve got matthew whitaker, the doj. Hes been there since november but he still acting. There are some new players at the table. Richard definitely, and it will be interesting to see how the president plays the last 24 hours of the republicans controlling the house, the senate, and the congress. The house of representatives. Tomorrow, it all changes. Once nancy pelosi picks up the gavel, the votes change. It changes how the president will operate in washington with somebody on the other end of pennsylvania avenue that plans on holding him accountable. Harris jillian, what i think its also interesting is that nancy pelosi seems to be taking the lead more than chuck schumer. I realize the democrats dont have the majority in the senate, they didnt and still wont. But its an interesting dynamic with her and President Trump. Lisa it is. A lot of people, the last couple days anyway, i have been pointing out how hes been not as harsh as he has been with other people. Especially look at responses and thinks he set on social media, on twitter. Though he calls people out. I think its evident that he wants to play nice with her. That thats going to be the best situation going forward. We saw . Lisa President Trump has more leverage many dont separate funding from the rest of the agencies that need funding. This is specifically why nancy pelosi is offering to do it in two parts, to have dhs funding in one part and fund the rest of the agency that needs funding in a separate bill. This is why republicans should say no to this deal. And Senate Republicans and President Trump should not play ball with this. They should keep it as one overall funding bill as opposed to separating. The agencies. President trump also needs to figure out, do you want to have nancy pelosi and democrats in the household the Senate Republicans and the white house captives for the next two years, or do you want to set the precedent that they are not going to just lay down to nancy pelosi and the democratcontrolled house . I also find it interesting that nancy posey calls the wall immoral and ineffective, yet she doesnt offer the funding. Harris thats not all she has said. She has said some pretty offensive things, too prayed calling out his manhood. Im not making it up, that came out of her mouth. Mexico is paying for the wall through the new trade deal. I want to know why in the name of santa claus, the easter bunny, and the tooth fairy are you talking about mexico if they are paying for it, why did you shut the government down then . In terms of political messaging, this makes zero sense to me. He is very politically savvy after president george h. W. Bushs death, the wall street journal wrote an editorial about bushs missteps and his achievements. And bush wrote in his diary in april of 1989, i cannot break my read my lips pledge. I would be totally destroyed if i did. He broke it in a very 1cited agreement with the Senate Majority leader, George Mitchell come at the time. He gave in on tax increases and he did not get the spending cuts that he was promised. He may be knows that. Richard the democrats propose just that over the summer at the white house didnt weigh in. We put 25 billion in for Border Security, on top of that we said we also need some other fixes. We need to deal with the daca part relation, with the temper he said his population. Harris you dont think the president wants to do that customer thats a start of the conversation. Senator Lindsey Graham suggeste suggested, President Trump here is a compromise the wall street Journal Editorial Board writes about today. 5 billion for Border Security including wall funding, and then work permits to keep dreamers here in this country legally. Because it would benefit not just President Trump, because it would be an out from the shutdown. Kind of an offramp. It also benefit the democrats because this whole dream or issue of what president obama did is in front of the courts right now, and on the merit President Trump might win in terms of resending the protections for dreamers. Wouldnt it benefit the democrats if they can get on board with that . Will he do it . Richard i think it will benefit the democrats. Herein lies the problem every time we try to go to the white house and negotiate. He says hes in the white house negotiating, but if you talk to speaker pelosi, or speakerelect posey, she says she hasnt heard from them since december 11th at their last meeting. Hes not calling folks and, this is the first conversation we are having since the shutdown about how we bring the Government Back together with democrats in the room. Democrats now control one chamber in the United States congress. That means you have to work with them. Lisa is right, at the beginning of the segment when she said lisa thank you, richard. Thats very nice. Harris quick question the chamber that democrats control is not the one that will make the decision that needs a 60foot threshold. Thats the senate. Are there enough i dont care which one you serve, you probably have friends in both, right . Richard of course. Harris bicameral friendship. Are there enough democrats who can sway if you democrats on the senate, from the house to the senate, to try and get them to join . The president will need ten. Richard just for a singular a 5 billion wall vote. I dont think he has the votes for that. No. If you did, he would open the government already. Harris i want lisa to give me the last word on that. Speaker you need seven now because they have a 53 seat majority in this next congress. I will think know what it taket there. I dont see a metal. I see nancy pelosi and democrats wanting to not play ball, President Trump doesnt want to accept anything that doesnt have at least a down payment on the wall, which will be at least 5 billion. He went out to dinner, brown nosing him, trying to get on his good side. He groveled again when he was running for senate. I find this to be incredibly selfserving, and i think the only point to this is for mitt romney setting himself up to this next congress and trying to position himself in a position of power. Holding his extra vote on certain things. This is all about positioning, and its very selfserving. Jillian in fairness, for the full story, he did praise many of the policies and that oped, as well. He talked about corporate taxes, stripping out excessive regulation, cracking down on china, prison reform, he talked about a couple things. He did give him some praise. On the other end of it, the sentiment what i was going to say, on one hand hes giving praise. I just want to point that out. You are talking about how divisive this country is right now. Thats adding to it. When you are using that language, that you just referenced. Dagen but he is acting like a mister, mitt romney. What are the other senators who have been there for years, standing around thinking . Even republican senators. We dont need you to be the hero, here. I think there is something to be said about this president punching down. He shouldnt have done that at all, he shouldnt have responded to it at all. You are cheered and a lie this is what drives me nuts about leftist women. Its not misogynistic to think that Hillary Clinton is a terrible candidate in the loathsome human being. Its not misogynistic think that Elizabeth Warren is a terrible candidate and a terrible human being. Those things are true. It drives me nuts when these leftwing candidates continue to no, its not misogynistic to think they are terrible richard no, its your opinion. Its not a fact. Its not true that they are loathsome people. Lisa actually, obama had made a richard excuse me. When you hear some of the advocates for Elizabeth Warren, and i read some of that in the intro and share that with you guys in the audience when you hear them say that the likability question something we we look more about women than we do about men, would you make of that, jillian . Jillian i dont know if thats necessarily fair that we look at that more with women that we do with men. I think since there are fewer women in general in a race like this, i think we pay closer attention to it. I think that might be a bit of it. I think that seeing that video of her like let me go grab a beer. What was her terminology was to mark let me go grab me a beer. I think that was it. It seems staged to me. Maybe it wasnt. Maybe thats harsh. If youre trying to be relatable, trying to heart is not going to get you there. Dagen one thing is certain certain, that the race for the democratic nomination will be the campaign of awkward moments. She is just the first. You are going to have individuals who are not natural like i said, about mitt romney, retail politicians who can look at somebody dead in the eye. Like a bill clinton or even, to some extent, President Trump. Look at them and relate to that person. Its the hot sauce moment from Hillary Clinton about risk campaign, where she is trying with an audience in a very staged sort of way. So i cant wait, because joe biden, if he gets in this race, he is mr. Gas. With the hugs and things like that. Harris but hes very likable. Richard he is very likable. Harris i point that because weve had this discussion before about men. I dont really know that we dont have it about women pray thats why i was asking that. Richard but, Harris Harris advocate saying we only have that when it comes to women. But we have talked about like ability. Dagen i said monday on this show, i think the men running for the nomination will be at a disadvantage because they are going to get pushed by the women.
