From the neighborhoods of sunnyside to flushing, roosevelt ave. Spans over 100 city blocks paved with flavors from every corner of the earth. And meeting me for a taste is resident foodie, jeff orlick. So were in Jackson Heights right now. Tell me about this neighborhood. Were in the crosssection of the world. Little india over here, little bangladesh, little manila, thai town, one of the five chinatowns. People say its like a mosaic of cultures. Not a melting pot, but a mosaic because everyone has their own section everywhere. Audrina patridge voiceover jeff is somewhat of a local celebrity. Hey man. Male voice whats up . How you doing there . How are you . Male voice ok. Audrina patridge voiceover known for organizing roosevelt ave. Food tourists for more than a decade. People here like to show off their food. Audrina patridge voiceover and the first stop on this tour is china, specifically the region of tibet, represented by the aptly named, little tibet. Theres a growing population of himalayan people here, so we figured people would definitely come and try some tibetan food. Audrina patridge voiceover and nothing screams tibet more than its native delicacy, momo. So these are beef momos. Ground beef, onion, scallion. Do you eat it with your hands . You could. Its very juicy. Let me put a napkin on my lap. It could happen. [laughter] [music playing] wow, those are delicious. Its just a dumpling. Its like nothing crazy. Audrina patridge it is, but the flavoring of the meat is so good. Im not sure if we gave it to different cultures or we borrowed it from different cultures. Well, im going to call them momos from now on. No more dumplings. Audrina patridge voiceover next stop, a unique spin on a classic dish youll only find right here in little tibet, queens. Audrina patridge so obviously this is a burger, but its not your typical burger. It looks a little different. This is a momo burger. Audrina patridge the bun feels so light and fluffy. Jeff orlick this is like the majority of Jackson Heights, its all spanish speaking. Mexican, colombian, ecuadorian. [background chatter] Audrina Patridge just walking today, i probably heard at least six different languages, and that was only like, maybe 10 blocks. Audrina patridge voiceover leading us to our next stop, south america, characterized by a taste of classic colombia. Corn is a common ingredient in colombian cuisine making arepas or corn cakes a country staple. And when it comes to arepas in new york, legend has it the arepa lady is queen. Audrina patridge actually, ive had arepas before, but not colombian ones. So how are these different . First of all, theyre the best ones that youll ever have. Ok. Thats a big statement. Its colombian style. Cheese arepa is made from corn flour, has mozzarella inside so its very fluffy, its very cheesy. And then arepa de chocolo is ground up fresh corn, so it kind of has like, a slight sweetness to it, and it mixes with the saltiness of the cheese, and its amazing. Jeff orlick alejandro, his mom is the sainted arepa lady. [angelic music] jeff orlick world famous. Audrina patridge voiceover what is now a restaurant began as a local food cart operated by the arepa lady from 10 00 to 5 00 am for more than 25 years. My mom, in columbia she was a lawyer. She eventually was a judge for a while. So in order for her to be able to raise her children, she needed to do something where she could control her schedule. She still operates the cart and she still stays till five oclock in the morning. [music playing] jeff orlick how does it make you feel . I feel like im in columbia. [laughter] were right here, in the american dream. This is delicious. Well, i love this but i dont want to get too full because i think were going to one more spot, right . Right. And where is that . This is probably the most modern filipino restaurant in the area. Filipino cuisine is a mixture of many cuisines, like spanish influence japanese and chinese. So what is this dish . Ariel denoso thats sisig ni baranog. Its marinated milkfish. Its deep fried and then chopped into pieces, mixed with scallions, onions. It has soy sauce in that. Oh my gosh, that is amazing. Its so good. How about this . Ariel denoso that is chicken inasal, marinated with soy sauce. Theres lemongrass in that, ginger, pepper, onions. Wow, this chickens really good. Well, ariel, thank you so much. Ive never had Filipino Food before and i kind of feel like im in the philippines. Just in one day, you can go to like, eight different countries. Located on the boroughs northwest border and just a bridge away from manhattan sits the eclectic neighborhood of astoria, queens. Widely recognized for its rich ethnic landscape, comprised of nearly 100 cultures and growing, astoria is also gaining traction as an artistic mecca, especially among the streets of Welling Court. This neighborhood in queens is so vibrant and beautiful. I cant get over it. Audrina patridge voiceover every year, residents of astorias Welling Court communities turn their walls into canvases for some of the worlds most innovative artists. Tell me more about this art project. How did it start . Well, it started actually here in this neighborhood by people that live on Welling Court, so thats why its called the Welling Court mural project. [music playing] Audrina Patridge voiceover stretching several city blocks, the Welling Court mural project has been beautifying the neighborhood every year since 2009. And at the center of it all is project organizer garrison buxton. Garrison buxton the biggest goal in the big picture is social change. Its about having people feel more engaged, and more supported, and more active in the spaces that they live in. Ive been involved in Welling Court mural project for about six years. This is my community. It was very natural for them to have invited me to come and paint. Solus i come from dublin in ireland. Ive been coming to new york the past few years. When i first started coming to new york, i just did one or two murals and now i have a full schedule. Im a queens guy and i want to represent from new york. [music playing] [speaking spanish] [music playing] from afar, this could easily just look like it was painted thats what i thought. Or you wouldnt know exactly how it was done. But its actually a multilayered stencil. And why is stenciling so popular . Its a really easily accessible method. Like, you can pick it up easily. Its easy to put up. Its like, banksy does a lot of stenciling, right . Yeah. Well, maybe ill channel my inner banksy today and give it a shot. That sounds like a great idea. [music playing] Audrina Patridge voiceover feeling inspired, my design immediately comes to mind and i waste no time creating my stencil. [music playing] now its time to cut. Audrina patridge you have to be so careful and elaborate on the lines. Are you banksy . Cant tell you. [sighs] [laughter] done. Now we get to go spray paint. [music playing] garrison buxton ok, so basically what we want to do is we just want to keep the material down as flat as possible, and you can spray off the paper at first to see kind of how its going. And then just bring it in. You dont hold it down the whole time . No, its easier, its easier and you have greater control if you just do little bits at a time. Here we go. Now, craft beers are in high demand across the country, but here in queens, the thirst is real. Almost every month theres a new brewery in queens. Its great to see that queens is developing its own craft beer identity and really bringing a unique flavor to beer. Audrina patridge voiceover as home to at least seven microbreweries, with more on the way, queens is on tap to becoming new yorks king of beer. Leading the pour is the largest and first micro brewery to open in queens since prohibition, singlecut beersmiths. And im hooking up with its president and brew master rich buceta to learn what makes this stuff liquid gold. So rich, when it comes to craft brews, what does singlecut specialize in . We specialize in two styles primarily, ipas and lagers. Well, i love beer so i cant wait to see how its actually made. Were going to put you to work. Ok. Audrina patridge so youre brewing every day. Sometimes twice a day. Audrina patridge so whats the first step in this process . We take the grain, which is all collected here, and were going to combine it with hot water. We modulate that by adding cold water to the hot water to get it at 165. All right, i got this. [music playing] Audrina Patridge all right, so its on 165. Its not moving. Rich buceta you nailed it. Good. [music playing] so out of all the places to choose a brewery, why queens . Rich buceta at the time that i was looking to open a brewery, queens did not have any breweries of its own. Typically breweries open in brooklyn, sometimes manhattan. But queens, second largest borough of new york city, it didnt make sense that we werent represented by our own brewery. On our opening day, we had about 1,200 people show up. The place was packed to the front all the way to the back. So you kind of set the trend . Yeah, im proud of that. [music playing] Audrina Patridge ok, so these are all hooked up. These are all connected, now were going to open them up and get the beer flowing. Wow, you really hear it. Did i do that one . Yeah, no, its going. Oh, it is. Ok. I feel like a mad scientist. Its a little sometimes we wear hats, monocles. Yeah. Sometimes. [evil laughter] the brewing process is actually really intense. Theres so much of it in there. Rich buceta oh yeah. Audrina patridge you get your hands dirty, you get in there. I think i put too much. Theres a lot of waiting because you have to let it heat, and soak, and ferment. [alarm sounds] its hop time. You got it . Yup, thats exactly right. You can really smell that ipa. Rich buceta yeah. Yeah, thats usually the case. First were going to have the beer that we made today, which is our billy 18watt. Its a session ipa. I definitely smell that hoppy i put in there. It is hoppy or hop . Thats it, thats it. A little bit of pine in there also from i taste the pine and grapefruit. Yes, this is dean, our Pacific Northwest mahogany ale. [music playing] oh my god. [laughter] thats not i mean, its good. Its really strong. Is this like what is the alcohol percent . Its only 6 . 6 . Yeah. Thats a strong one. Youve got to try one of us our sour beers. This is made with hibiscus flowers and black current. I like that one. Good. I dont think craft beer is really big in la, not yet. Yeah, you really taste the hibiscus and it has almost like a kombucha taste. Yeah, thats absolutely right. But i mean, its so popular here. So queens is going to be like, the next hot spot. Now aside from its booming food, art and scene, queens is also making some noise along its shoreline with a long stretch of paradise known as rockaway beech. Credited as the largest urban beach in the country, rockaway has long been a summer staple for beach bums and a yearround sanctuary for surfers. Im surfing in new york city right now. Coming out to the rockaways is a great way to spend a day in queens and get outside of manhattan and the busyness. I just kind of ride the train for an hour and then just show up at the beach. [music playing] Audrina Patridge voiceover today im taking on the atlantic face first with help from local instructors mike and mike. So guys, ive been to rockaway before. Ive actually jetskid here whoo. But ive never surfed. So what can i expect . You can expect nothing but the best out there today. Conditions are amazing, the weather is about 85 degrees, waters warm. The waves are about two to three feet, occasional four. Audrina patridge so youre literally locals. You grew up here. Yes, this is where we were, you know, born and bred. Being with locals who know everything about the community, that are involved in the community. We would like to share that experience with all of our students who are coming from new york city and beyond so they can get that local experience, that local vibe, of what its like to be a Rockaway Beach surfer. Audrina patridge voiceover well, its time to suit up and do what the locals do. Welcome to the locals surf school. Are you guys ready to surf . Yeah. [clapping] so this is beach 67th street, one of the two surfing beaches in the area. It is the beginnerfriendly surf beach, no real hazards. There are some simple steps to follow. The closer you go towards the nose, this would make for a funny planking picture, but whats going to happen is that youre going to nosedive. Myself or mike is going to help you by saying, paddle, paddle, paddle. Youre going to do so by cupping your hands. And then at some point, youre going to feel a push and hear the words, pop up. That is your cue to move in from the paddle position, and hopefully it will look Something Like this. [music playing] Audrina Patridge and you want to keep your arms out . You dont want to be flying the airplane. Thats going to be a guaranteed crash landing, all right . [music playing] put the feet a little wider. There we go. Wider . You want to sit in the middle of the board. Thats the sweet spot. Not too, far because youll nosedive. We have whats called the leash, right . The waves were perfect today, the right size for surfing for our level. Californias great, hawaiis great. But when you catch rockaway at the perfect time, anywhere between september through november, you get sometimes waves between six to 10 feet tall. Audrina patridge i wiped out more than a few times and i just keep going out there. Male voice thats a rite of passage. It happens to everyone. Male voice i wipe out, she wipes out. Everyone who surfs wipes out and its a fun thing, as long as youre being safe about it. [music playing] that was so much fun surfing, and i wiped out. I loved every minute of it, but i could really use some food right now and a drink. Well, i have the perfect place. Lets go to the surf club. Its kind of like an oasis in what is actually new york city Audrina Patridge i think a lot of people in manhattan need to come out here and chill out. Plus theres a subway. The a train is right there, so itll take you from Rockaway Beach right back into the city.
