[ cheers and applause [ cheers and applause seth welcome back to the show thank you its nice to be back seth im so happy to have you. It is very i dont know if its as funny to you as it is to me you finished wrapping mrs. Maisel. Obviously, youve done this incredible show for five seasons. It takes place in new york city in the 1960s and now youve moved on from that to do this wonderful play where you play a woman in 1960s new york city again. [ laughter ] yes seth so this is kind of your move now i guess it is its maybe next ill get to go to the 70s that would be really exciting. Seth oh, my god, yeah. We would love to see you in the 70s thank you so much or the 90s. Thats vintage now seth oh, the 90s. Take me to the 90s seth dont tell me that the 90s is vintage. Isnt that terrifying seth that breaks my heart, yeah me, too yeah, no i mean whats interesting about this is i feel like, you know, obviously its a coincidence i feel like im searching for great parts and great writing and great scripts. But, it i feel like iris, who i play in the sign in sidney brusteins window, would be one of the beatniks in the comedy club of one of midges shows. Seth yes theyre pretty different gals seth exactly it turns out there were a lot of different kinds of people in new york city in the 60s [ laughter ] it turns out not all women were the same. Seth not all women were the same yeah. Seth despite mens best efforts in the 60s. Thats exactly right. [ laughter ] seth yeah. They managed to have a breadth of experiences so this this is the same playwright who wrote raisin in the sun, and this is her final play, and its lesser known. Yeah. Seth is it cool to sort of bring back a very famous playwrights sort of you know, i wouldnt say secondary work but certainly lesser known work is it cool to bring it out to an audience that hasnt seen it yeah, its been really, really special Lorraine Hansberry was such a gifted writer. So many people know her work from a raisin in the sun. But this is a really different play about a really Different Group of people, and its a piece that is so much lesser known. Its been really, really special to get to bring it to life with this cast. Our director, annie kauffman, did the play back in 2016 in chicago, and its just been the best its been so awesome to hear from so many people who were familiar with her work from raisin about how this play has moved them, and also people who didnt know her work at all and this being their first introduction to the force that was Lorraine Hansberry seth you mentioned the cast. Your costar, oscar isaacs, one of our favorites here as well. Oscar isaac, excuse me and how was it working with him . Were you familiar with his work . Yes, yes. [ laughter ] no, oscars the best weve had so much fun. I i had you know, i was familiar with quite a bit of his work, but i did bust myself the other day. He was messing around, doing a british accent during rehearsals and i was like, oh, you know, your britishccents pretty good where did you learn that . And he was like, i i just you know, i just did it in moon knight. i was like, which i have definitely seen and enjoyed very much. [ laughter ] yeah, i keep i keep getting seth you were like, you were so good in that, i thought it was someone else. [ laughter ] i didnt even recognize you i thought that was a british man. Seth that was you. That was you it was you . Seth you also have a very talented young actor in the show, julian de niro, who is Robert De Niros son yes seth does that mean that Robert De Niro has come to see the show he has. Hes been an amazing dad hes come to see the show twice, and hes so lovely julian is extraordinarily talented and has just been fantastic to work with but he did come to our first preview, which is an like, aplusplus dad move so mean. Seth yeah. As an actor [ laughter ] seth his first preview, thats like, you definitely want people to come at least on night three. Thats what im saying. Seth yeah. But he was very, very lovely. Seth when did you were you doing school plays when you were young is that how you got started . Yeah. I did you know, i did some kindergarten tree work seth oh, look at you [ laughter ] that was highly excellent if i do say so myself seth yes yeah, i started, you know, diddling around in [ laughter ] can we just go backwards now seth thats like a stage term [ laughter ] to diddle is to sort of thank you so much in elementary school, junior high and high school my high school had this really cool program called stunts where the students put on their own show and kind of rewrite the words to wellknown music and songs. And as you can expect, its seth so theres no sort of no overseeing adult . Theres not a lot of adult oversight. Seth okay, gotcha. Thats exciting. So its a [ bleep ] storm seth yeah. [ laughter ] but also kind of amazing. Seth yeah, of course and inspiring i had maybe my most traumatizing audition ever auditioning for stunts when i was a freshman in high school. You know, i i dont know about can you sing . Seth no. You cant sing . Not at all not even a little bit. Seth not i would say not based on the feedback i received [ laughter ] not at all . Seth yeah. It wasnt like, go get lessons. It was like, dont do that. [ laughter ] from one singular person . Seth no. It was like a i got a lot of i had a weird thing happen, which is my entire like so when i was growing up, my brother and my parents would say, stop singing. Oh. Seth and then i met my wife, and she would say, stop singing. Oh, boy seth and now my kids are telling me to stop singing [ light laughter ] and im like, what a coincidence that not one of you has an ear for talent [ laughter ] thats exactly right. I want to see you in the next Broadway Musical seth oh, my god. Thats great its your turn. Seth come on Opening Night because its going to close. [ laughter ] pull a de niro come early and leave early its a deal seth so do you what about you . Youre not a singer either i feel like im the kind of singer who can fool you to an extent seth okay. Ive taken some voice lessons. Seth yeah. I can get away with it, and then i better get cut off or leave the room but it i you know, i had done a little audition for some of my peers and then got a callback, which was very exciting and they handed me this sheet music for this slightly lesser known musical at the time called wicked. [ laughter ] and the song was defying gravity. Seth yeah. And they were like, here you go. And i was like, oh, boy. And went up and did an absolutely horrifying rendition of defying gravity, where i missed my entrance about five different times. And they kind of just politely nodded me off the stage after a while. [ laughter ] seth yeah. And in this play, if anyone comes to see it, my character iris gives a speech about auditioning and how traumatizing it is. And i may or may not be drawing slightly from that experience. [ light laughter ] seth that is not to, you know, throw shade on stunts, but it does seem like if an adult was there, theyd be like, you cant make them do defying gravity. id like to hope that they would have saved me from that trauma seth yeah, well, look, obviously that trauma aside, its all worked out really well. Im always pleased to be here very happy to seth youre here on a very special day for a welshman well, yes were on the eve, on the cusp of a very auspicious day. Tomorrow, march the 1st, is saint davids day, the feast day of the patron saint of wales a welsh saint paddys day. Seth okay. As its been told to me a number of so its basically welsh st. Paddys day. So, yes, tonight is usually a big night for us seth okay, gotcha. And is it a little bit like st. Paddys day . Theres maybe some imbibing of adult beverages . Thats thats basically all there is to do seth okay. [ laughter ] gotcha thats all there is we wear red. Thats why the red socks are on. Seth okay, wonderful yes so theres a number of different celebrations throughout throughout wales seth are there any are there any elements of it that are sort of outside, say, you know the norm . Seth binge drinking . Yes i mean, it became a tradition with the welsh regiment of the British Armed forces on march the 1st to have the leek is the National Symbol of wales seth the vegetable the leek. Im sorry yes. [ laughter ] not when one relieves themselves, yeah so the vegetable is an odd choice, yes, but there is history behind it, which we wont go into. So, the welsh regiments of the British Armed forces tend to have a leekeating competition on march the 1st seth okay. Which sometimes when we do imbibe too much, and we think this is a great idea, i partake in that celebration myself seth we actually brought a couple leeks, and now oh. Seth these are im very upset that theres no preparation at all this is just a raw leek. This is a raw this is a raw leek seth okay. I mean this is what seth so you asked for a stop watch. I did ask for a stop watch, yes. Its all been planned. [ laughter ] also, also the planning has gone hideously wrong because you very cleverly managed to put the small one closest to yourself. [ laughter ] seth oh, i look its like that moment in Princess Bride when hes like, you only think that happened. Seth im happy to eat whatever im the welshman. Seth im going to start by saying im not even a fan of leeks, but how when you say a leekeating contest. Yes seth like how much leek usually gets eaten so this being a standard, average leek [ light laughter ] seth okay. Would take about an hour, hour and a half. No [ light laughter ] it usually does take a long time seth yeah. Well, nobody i think nobody ever, when the leek is served, thinks, im going to eat this as fast as i can. [ light laughter ] no, not in one sitting and raw. Seth yeah. So, i thought rather than kind of cut together some kind of montage where you see us throwing up and things, we should probably just do 30 seconds [ light laughter ] seth and see who eats the most leek. See who gets the most out of the leek seth okay. Gotcha all right. So, hang on i got a tutorial on this although its overwhelming me already. Seth now, these these were brought in from wales. [ laughter ] they were grown by my father in his back garden, yes seth i think thank you so much nobody ever brings leeks with back stories [ laughter ] seeing as it was march the 1st, now, to my mind, this is also the first televised leekeating, you know, usa versus wales leekeating competition. Seth yeah. So, i say we play we play for the pin. Seth okay. Look at that its got wales and the United States im going to show two flags this is a very exciting pin to play for [ cheers ] its a pin to play for. [ applause ] seth theres a real likelihood that this is the start of something, and this will take off as a televised competition. [ light laughter ] this is my hope seth yeah. This is why i bought i bought shares in a leekgrowing business [ laughter ] seth and this is one of those things because ive invested in a lot of your things yes, you have seth and none of them have gone well. Seth now, i should note i feel very fortunate right now because my wife likes you a great deal, is a fan of your work, has met you personally and thats going to be so helpful when i come home with, like, leek breath. [ laughter ] you can tell her its a seth leek and whiskey. Its a welsh tradition. Its like, darling, it was a welsh tradition. Seth it does sound very made up yes seth im like, you know st. Patricks day. Well, everybody has one. Yes [ laughter ] all those dirty celts. Seth theres a lot of preamble to the leekeating. Ive been trying to put it off hoping the stage manager will say, weve run out of time. [ laughter ] hes like, no, we havent. Seth its a very strong, a very pungent leek. Its the whiskey youre smelling now seth no. Its a leek. Lets just compare leeks quickly like we always do. [ laughter ] like we did on our last birthdays. Seth there we go look at that thats why thats why you and i get along so well. We have similar shaped leeks [ laughter ] weve compared them over the years. Seth no jealousy no, no. Seth just two guys with very similar leeks. Admiration and congratulations. Seth im waving mine the wrong way. Is it important when you oh, yes you should always hold it from the green. [ laughter ] always hold it from the green. And the quick tip is as youre doing it, you should try and hum traditional welsh folk songs or welsh hymns. Seth okay. Or if you dont know anything, anything by tom jones will suffice seth okay. Gotcha [ laughter ] but humming it will help it go down. This was the name of this boat before you bought it in 1939, this boat was built in brooklyn and named rarebit. So when i saw it on ebay one drunken night, i went, well, this is fate i live in brooklyn. Seth so you just got a mouthful of leek and youre on ebay had a welsh whiskey keri was asleep. I was like, buy. I had all these giddy, dizzy, rosetinted plans for this thing. Seth now, you do have this boat, and you take people out. You are the captain of this vessel sadly, im not the captain. I have a great captain, captain kelly. So yes, we now charter it because the restoration took so long in the end, myself and captain kelly, we did the restoration. We they call it splining the hull we splined the hull. We glassed it and everything we now take six paying, sane people out in new york harbor on a charter. There is a traditional welsh dish called welsh rarebit, which is basically cheese on toast which speaks to the kind of culinary, you know, prowess that i have thats about the sum total of it seth and you make you do make this for your guests on your boat. So i came up with this ingenious idea that what i should do when im aboard is prepare them small welsh rarebits, which is just toasted bread with cheese. There is no oven or grill or anything, so i use a blowtorch on [ laughter ] on a wooden boat seth its a wooden boat, yeah i wanted to clarify that yeah. [ laughter ] seth so they must be very excited when they see an actor, not a sailor or a captain. No, no. Like, i tell people, look, ive played a sailor. Ive played a chef [ light laughter ] its like how how badly can this go . I just think it adds to the drama. I think it adds to the drama of it all seth give us a sense of what theyre seeing so what i do in fairness, your show i dont think trusted me with the kind of blowtorch that i use seth okay. Mines bigger obviously [ laughter ] so i i have to make it quickly. Therefore, i use a large blowtorch. Seth yeah. And i think it adds to the drama. Seth yeah. Because you see them going, will we make it home alive seth yeah. [ laughter ] its like even i say, i dont know lets see how it goes. Do you like cheese and toasted bread . So basically thats all i do and then i offer up with showbiz tales and all sorts and try and wake them up for the end seth you said you said the boat is from the 30s. On perry mason, you were on a 30s motorcycle. I was seth and this is practical youre riding this motorcycle. It is practical however, on the first day, they said come do your trial you know, your training on the harleydavidson. And then the guy who right, this is how you start it you turn this, you pull that, you push this. Wait for that to kick in now push that, pull that again, and youre off and i was like and the producer saw the wildeyed panic in my eyes and went, okay we need a montage to do just the starting of the motorbike. Told the action guy vehicle turn it into an electric bike in a week seth yeah. So it kind of split a number of people who when we were shooting outside would come out and say, oh, my god, is this a 1933 harley . Theyre like, it is. Theyre like, why cant we hear it . And id say, its an electric bike now. [ laughter ] and it would split 50 of these predominantly men of a certain age would go, thats incredible. Youve turned it into an electric bike. And 50 would say, thats disgusting what youve done to that hog. [ light laughter ] seth i would say like yeah i get it. Seth this, though, theres no shortcut with horses. There was no shortcuts. Seth now, this is you on a horse. Thats me on a horse. Seth thats you on a horse theres no cgi. [ applause ] seth can i ask why no saddle in that picture seth look at that, no saddle yeah, yeah. Seth its interesting because saddles you would think youd need a saddle for safety youre doing no saddle, but you are wearing a mask [ laughter ] the horse was an antivaxxer. Its hard its hard for them seth now, did you have any previous experience on a horse because this looks terrifying. I actually did, and i did that slightly foolish thing. The writers very kindly said, is there anything you want to do in a scene . And i was like, i love riding horses. But they put me on a scene where the horse rears. I was like, i dont like horses that rear. I like riding riding them seth yeah. But it was a i loved it. I bonded with the horse. Seth well, there you go. And you guys will probably Work Together again i hope so seth now, youve talked in the past, again, one of my alltime favorite shows where you met your partner, keri yeah. Seth and by the way, you guys, congratulations. Cocaine bear. Unbelievable amazing yeah yes. And you just straightup admitted to us you could never follow it. I had the entire production team, the entire writing staff i was still like, i have no idea whats going on. I freely admit im not the sharpest tool in the box im probably the biggest tool in the wardrobe [ laughter ] but im like, this is so complicated. I have no idea whats going on. Seth look, some people can follow plots, and some people are leek eaters. I like to think im the everyman im like, look, if i understand it, were golden. If not and everyone will be going, we all understand it except you. And im like, all right. Im thinking for the other half. Seth because perry mason now its perry mason. Its a courtroom drama its, you know, legal maneuvers. Are you the same i had no idea what was going on [ light laughter ] i was forever going, who is he . But you originally thought you were going to be a dramatic actor. Yeah. I started so i started watching novellas with my grandmother when i was 5 years old. Seth okay. Very dramatic. And then my manager actually said, i see you on a sitcom. And i said, i cant do comedy. Like i dont know how i finagled my way in grownish, but like thats not going to happen and here we are. Now i love comedy. Seth oh, well great. And i think comedy loves you back this is obviously a spinoff of how i met your mother. Was that a show you were familiar with . I was familiar with it. So, when i was 21, i had a longdistance relationship he lived in canada seth so, he was imaginary . [ laughter ] you know what everyone in l. A. Felt like he was because i never saw him. Seth all right, all right. Well, his loss but his loss, exactly. I flew to canada to go see him, and all he wanted to do was watch how i met your mother. I was like, dude, why are my clothes still on [ laughter ] like barney, me, like whats going on here . [ light laughter ] and i was so resentful towards the show obviously, i fell in love with it, so i secretly watched it when he wasnt around. And then when i booked it, i text him i was like, guess what . Seth that is a real that is a real payback. Nicely done. [ cheers and applause now, obviously the show, this franchise has big fans you have people in your life, though, who are obviously your familys going to watch the show because youre in it. Yes seth but you have family members who are real fans. Yeah, they are real fans, finally. Seth yeah. I mean, listen, my friends and family, theyve watched everything ive done obviously secret life was huge for me, and they were huge fans of it. Grownish, you know, i was 29 playing 21, and all my friends were in their 30s like, yeah, its a cute show. And i said, thanks. And now, theyre actually texting me, and theyre excited, and theyre like, oh, my gosh i love it. Youre so good. Im like, yeah. Thank you. [ laughter ] even people from high school that were like, youll never be an actress, was like are texting me like, youre so good in it. I appreciate and love you so much. I was like, yeah, same. [ light laughter ] seth did you do you have the kind of family that gives you feedback on your performances you know what they more so give me feedback on my interviews. So im wondering how theyre going to feel after this seth oh, interesting [ light laughter ] yeah. Seth and what is it about the interviews that they give you feedback on . Is it about how you talk about them most of the time its how i talk about my mother seth okay. Because ill, you know, share stories about my mother and, like, some of the latin abuse that happens yall know what im talking about. Seth gotcha. You know . Seth so you havent really spoken much about her in the body of this interview is there anything you want to say, either pro or con shes im sure shes already texting me, dont talk about me like that.
