Matt lauer. The storm youre seeing the effects right there is doing exactly what it was forecast to do. Gaining strength. Starting its turn towards the coast. Lets give you a reset what we know right now. Sandy is a category 1 hurricane, with maximum sustained winds of 85 Miles Per Hour. The eye is located about 310 miles southsoutheast of new york city at the moment. Emergency officials in new york city and washington, d. C. Have taken unprecedented action to deal with the storm shutting down the mass Transit Systems and cancelling schools. Stock markets here in new york have been closed for today, possibly they will be closed tomorrow as well. And heres why. Look at the size of this storm. This is a nasa image from space captured over the weekend. The hurricane is about 800 miles wide. That means its going to impact a huge region and since its moving so slowly only 15 or 10 miles an hour it will impact that region for a very long time. Obviously a huge weather story. Theres a political story here too. The president ial election just eight days away, president obama began his day in florida but with the weather deteriorating in washington, d. C. , he rushed back to the white house. He cancelled his appearance in orlando and has just now cancelled an event for tomorrow scheduled for green bay, wisconsin and governor romney has also cancelled some of his events. Well have more on the impact on the president ial race. We have correspondents stationed all up and down the east coast. Lets start with al roker. Reporter if you look back at this beech theres usually on a beautiful sunny day from these dunes out to the waters edge about 150 feet as you can see. That is gone. And it is enencroacroaching on dunes. Sandy is threatening these dunes and the winds are picking up. Sandy has 85 mileperhour winds. It is moving northnorthwest at 20 Miles Per Hour. So its picked up forward speed. And at this at any rate it will be reaching the new jersey shore line sometime within the early evening hours to mid to late evening hours here along the shore line. Once that happens as you can see on the path all bets off. This is a massive storm. Over 800 miles wide. Doesnt matter where it hits. But, the Northeast Quadrant of the storm is the worst part and thats where it will cause problems for new york, coastal new jersey, long island. With the storm surge we expect the surge to be anywhere from six to 11 feet abovenormal and the big problem is this is an astro nomical high tide. We have to be worried about the winds. The winds will be sustained later this evening around 50 to 55 Miles Per Hour. And higher. Wind gusts over 70 Miles Per Hour. And that will bring down power lines and trees and that will mean massive Power Outages. One estimation is it could be 10 Million People without power at some point during this storm. And weve got rain to deal with. Thats why besides coastal flooding from the surge there is actual rain flooding. Flooding from rain, five to seven inches of rain generally but some areas may pick up to 10 inches of rain before its all over. As if thats not enough, cold air being drawn into the system, and tropical moisture coming in. Its colliding over the mountains of West Virginia. One to two feet of snow possible from there into the western mountains of virginia and the lowlying regions of ohio will see snow as well. So this is an unprecedented storm making an unprecedented move causing unprecedented weather. It will be one for the history books. Savannah . Lets get to nbcs lester holt, about 300 miles to the south in Virginia Beach, virginia. Power outages already being reported. Lester, good morning to you again. Reporter good morning. Listening to al, remarkable to think the eye of the storm has never gotten more than a couple hundred miles away from here yet. We had Tropical Storm force winds. Huge waves pounding that fishing pier just over my shoulder. And potentially undermining it. Weve been watching that situation unfold all morning. Right now its holding. The worst of the storms is actually, should at least move through this area and as it heads north what they are expecting is that the worst and it may still be to come. Barreling towards the east coast Hurricane Sandy has nearly 60 Million People on severe storm watch this morning. Kind of scary whats going on here. Hopefully its going to miss us. Reporter the mega storm stretches more than 800 miles wide from maine to North Carolina. This is a serious and big storm. And my first message is to all people across the eastern seaboard, midatlantic, going north, that you need to take this very seriously. Reporter police are going door to door in coastal towns such as Point Pleasant beach, new jersey where storm surge is the greatest concern. More than 1 Million People have been given a mandatory evacuation. We have four kids so its sort of the sensible thing. Reporter including 375,000 in new york city where the entire Transit System has been brought to a halt. No trains, buses or subways until further notice. We dont want to encourage people being up and about. Reporter transportation nationwide has also been affected with an estimated 6,800 flights grounded so far. Frankenstorm, as it has been nicknamed, is expected to bring widespread heavy rainfall of up to 10 inches, coupled with destructive wind gusts of 75 Miles Per Hour and in some areas blizzard snowstorms. The damage, officials estimate, could be in the billions. Today, those looking for supplies may find empty shelves after this weekends mad rush. Ive already done the grocery shopping, got the flashlight, you know, have the candles, so i just needed to go out and get some ice. Reporter while utility crews coming from as far away as illinois are doing their best to control potential Power Outages. Last night the power went out for about five seconds which my heart stopped. Reporter for now the east coast is just awaiting the eye of the storm. Hope for the best and expect the worst. Reporter along the boardwalk in Virginia Beach, the power is still on, there has been some fairly significant flooding across this area, especially in lowlying areas of norfolk and while i might point out we associate hurricanes with a tropicallike condition, tropical humid warm air. Its quite cold out here. Its in the 50s with the wind. Its like biting ice pellets slamming across us right now. Lester hang in there. Lester holt in Virginia Beach for us. A lot of people think of life here in new york city they think of us living above ground in high rise buildings but theres lowlying areas of this island as well and ann thompson is in one of those areas, lower manhattan. Ann, good morning to you. Reporter good morning. You can see behind me this is new york harbor, we have the statue liberty in the distance. Ellis island to the right of it. Here in new york harbor you can see just how much the sea has churned up. We have swells, we have white caps and i can tell you if i take a look here i would say the water level which has come up since high tide is about a foot, maybe a footandahalf below this seawall. But if you come down here with me, where you can see some people are taking some pictures at the lower part of this promene, the water has already come over the wall and has started to soak the southern tip of this promenade here and that is what city officials fear because they think as this storm goes on and as we hit another high tide tonight they fear a storm surge of up to 11 feet and that is why today in new york city theres no mass transit, the buses, the trains and the subways are shut down. The subways alone carry 4. 3 Million People in this city. So they are trying to urge tomb stay home, stay safe because its just not worth coming out here. Matt . All right. Thank you so much. Lets talk about our neighbors to the east, the state of connecticut. They have a coastline there that could see a storm surge between six and 11 feet. Katie is in mystic, connecticut. Reporter a big concern. Storm surge of six to 11 feet. Twice the size of me. Imagine this water coming from Long Island Sound two times above my head. Thats the problem. The wind has pick up. Governor dan malloy just finished a briefing. He said the worst is yet to come. The wind will be bad between 3 00 p. M. And 3 00 a. M. They are concerned about high tide the high tide that will come in at midnight tonight. With the storm surge of six to 11 feet and a high tide they are expecting many of the coastal communities including where we are right now in mystic to be completely flooded out. Thats why theres mandatory evacuations across the coastal areas. The good news is most of those people have left. Other than the flooding and the damage that will be caused by that there are eight electrical sub stations along the coast and that can cause a lot of Power Outages. They had hundreds of thousands of people without power during irene last year. They expect the same this year, probably even worse. They are thinking maybe as many as 600,000 without power for days to come. Again the surge is really going to be problem here. Well see that later in the evening and into tomorrow. Matt . We spoke to connecticuts governor Daniel Malloy earlier this morning. He said this storm is one of the biggest threats to human life in his state in years. I began by asking governor malloy what worries him specifically about sandy. Its the next two tides. Could experience tides this afternoon at about what the perfect storm was. Tonights tide during the nighttime hours could be twice that, and thats our biggest worry. If that happens it really is catastrophic. The amount of damage and loss of property is going to be extreme. Weve been talking about it for days. Weve prepared. We have people trying places. We have equipment in the right places. Really were waiting to see what Mother Nature throws at us. Lets be clear. This storm is staying on script. And that script brings us to the worst result we could possibly have imagined. As a result of that, and mandatory evacuations and suggested evacuations, how many people in your state do you think have been displaced at this moment . Nine the evacuation zones, because this is a category 4, this is our highest category emergency that we would consider along the shore, 360,000 people have been urged to leave their homes. Thats the number were talking about. So, put it this way. Thats about one tenth of our entire population. But lets be very clear. Youre talking about new haven, youre talking about bridgeport, youre talking about stamford, three of our largest and most important cities with neighborhoods spread out throughout every one of the towns, 30 towns ordered evacuations. Its an extraordinary effort thats under way and its different than anything weve ever done. People in connecticut are used to a hurricane being a six to 12 hour event. This is a 36 hour event affecting at least four high tides. The first one was last night. Not bad but we needed to get people understanding that each one will get progressively worse. This one which will be bad and tonights which can be catastrophic. Thats our big worry. Weve urged people to leave as soon as possible. Yesterday, today if they are there, tonight could just be the worse. A House Keeping note your states only Nuclear Power plant the millstone plant, any plans to shupt that down as of last night it had been taken down 75 of capacity. They will make decisions later today. Its not going affected by wind and not being affected by tides. Its built pretty high. What they are worried about is stuff in the water. So if house get swept in or other things get swept in that could be an impact. If thats threatened they will take it down. Real quickly after irene we saw massive Power Outages in the state of connecticut. Do you have crews in from other states unaffected standing by and for the people who do lose power over the next 48 hours or so, governor, how long do you think they will be without power . If its in response to flooding they are going to be out for a long period of time. If we lose the nine sub stations that are in titled affected areas, potentially, then this is going to be a long term event. If we can avoid those being overcome by waves or water, then recovery will be more rapid. So, really were talking about days, one way or the other. We could be talking about weeks. Daniel malloy the governor connecticut just to give you and idea how seriously they are taking this. Hes ordered road closures for all state highways in connecticut, 11 00 a. M. Trucks will be prohibited from operating only limited access highway, at 1 00 state highways will be closed to all nonemergency related vehicles. He said its the most catastrophic event in our lives that we can plan for. A lot of people are planning including craig fugate. He join us earlier today. I began by asking him if the agency was ready for the storm. Weve been getting ready for a couple of days. You said when talk touring employees think big. What is your most pressing concern right now . Well the most immediate thing is that people have evacuated or are evacuating from storm surge but were also looking at impacts well inland and generally with hurricanes you tend focus on the center. This has a lot of impacts far way. Ive not been around long enough to see a hurricane forecast with a Snow Advisory in it. Lets go back to the evacuations for a moment. Do you feel that people are, in fact, heeding those warnings and getting out of the danger areas . Well i dont know specifically but ive seen governors and local officials have gotten out earlier. They put up the information. You mentioned the magnitude of this storm. Can you give us a sense of whats mobilized to deal with some of the impact . Well with weve got teams basically all the way from down in North Carolina where it was earlier impacting the outer banks all the way to maine. We have teams in states as far as inland as West Virginia. Weve been moving generators, moving basic supplies that we would need after the storm. So, its a large response area but we also have a lot of good teams with the states and their folks working together getting ready. Power outages are expected to be one of the big impacts of this storm. Is there any way to prevent a power outage, to kind of ward it off or do you have to just be prepared to deal with the aftermath . You need be prepared. Again, were not expecting the winds themselves inland to be that damaging, the homes and structures but we do think trees will get impacted. Limbs coming down the biggest problem. You told your staff on sunday to prepare for the what ifs, to not be complacent. What are the scenarios youre most worried about at this point . Heavy rain and flash flooding. In some cases we may not have river flooding for several days. I dont want people to think its not that bad when it first comes ashore. If you remember with hurricane irene some of the worst impacts were well inland like the state of vermont. Do you have any estimate of how much damage from a monetary standpoint this must cause . Are we talking billions . Too early to say. Our focus is on life safety. Were prepared to do recovery. We can get dollar figures after storm. We want people to be safe. Were talking dollar figures not loss of life. Fema administrator craig fugate earlier this morning. We keep hearing the term perfect storm. Perhaps its overused but in this situation according to most of the forecast it could fit the bill because of a rare convergence of events that will make this next couple of days unlike any that the east coast has ever seen. Windows have been boarded, store shelves cleared and residents evacuated. If you refuse to evacuate youre not only putting yourself at risk but also the First Responders who will have to assist you. Scenes we normally see on the gulf coast instead brought to the northeast by an unusual and potentially devastating mix of ingredients. First Hurricane Sandy. The rush to prepare for sandy is on. Second her path. While storms moving up the coast typically drift out the sea the jet stream is forcing sandy into an almost unheard of left turn. We never seen this. This is unprecedented for a hurricane to take this kind of track. And that rare turn points sandy not only towards 60 Million People but yet another storm. A Northern Storm combining with the hurricane to be a super storm, a hurricane in the middle and a noreaster outside it. Frigid air from the dmonorth could bring up to two feet of 0 snow from kentucky to virginia to North Carolina. This jet stream coming in and tropical air coming up is to make more rain, more snow and a bigger storm with more energy in it. Yet another unlucky piece of the puzzle, a full moon bringing peak tides and making flooding all the more likely. Flooding is very real. Its a serious concern for many families. I know those of you who have lived through this before my words offer little comfort. One final factor, sand chips sluggish pace crawling as slow as 15 Miles Per Hour. Meaning that the damage, danger and misery wont be going away any time soon. Throughout the morning well show you a lot of dramatic images of this storm and we know that you probably are capturing some of those as well with your cameras, your portable devices. We had just shown you a sight of Virginia Beach, a pier getting battered by the storm. That shot went down because of the weather. We showed you Point Pleasant beach, new jersey and the waves are climbing higher and higher. Keep in mind based on where sandy is right now conditions in Virginia Beach should be starting to get a little bit better, conditions there in Point Pleasant beach, new jersey probably going to start to get a lot worse. As weve seen with conditions deteriorating and yet hurricane is not expected to make landfall until this evening. We expect to it get worse. As weve said some 50 Million People are being directly impacted by this massive storm. And thats just in this area, the Ripple Effects could stretch coast to coast. More than 8,500 flights have already been cancelled due to sandy and here in new york city the Stock Exchange and Nasdaq Exchange closed down as sandy bears down. The coast guard rescued 4 crew members of the tall ship hms bounty. It got caught in the storm off the North Carolina coast. Two other crew members are missing. The Severe Weather is a last minute october surprise in the president ial race. Both the president and governor romneys campaigns forced to readjust their schedules. Coming up well talk about the potential fallout on the race with nobody really knows with just eight days until the election. But first lets go to Stephanie Goss in narragansett, rhode island. You consider the fact that the eye of this storm will pass hundreds of miles from here. You get an idea of how big it is. Its remarkable to see surf like that, even more remarkable when you consider just beneath it is a beach that people were sun bathing on just this summer. So far theyve already had some School Closures across the state and Power Outages for some, 2700 people. Off the coast they are reporting 17 a1 2 foot swells. They shut down the ferries. Public transportation has been shut down in rhode island. Were obviously not through the worst it. They got through high tide this morning. The next big, big trouble spot for rhode island and all of the coast will be the high tide this evening around 8 00. Matt. Earlier in the broadcast we told you about a rescue going on in elizabeth city, North Carolina. The three masted tall ship hms bounty, you may remember this ship, it was used it was one of the ships in pirates of the caribbean ii. Its a working ship based out of connecticut. And unfortunately it started to take on water, sinking off the coast of North Carolina, 16 crew members on board. The coast guard was able to rescue two i mean rescue 14 but two are still missing. The search goes on. As you can imagine in this kind of weather those search efforts will be very difficult indeed. So, again, some sad news, two crew members missing out of 16 on the hms bounty there off the coast of n good morning to you. Well, weve got a pretty goodlooking day shaping up. Were going to start out with the warmest day of the week. 80 inland, 70 bayside. Watch out for thick fog until 10 00. By noon complete sunshine expected over the greater bay area. Tuesday into wednesday the Rainy Weather starts. Were expecting the pluck of the moisture to move in over the course of Late Wednesday into thursday. Thursday looks like a washout but by this weekend the sun comes right back out and we warm back up to the low 80s. Reporter and thats your latest weather. The calendar tell us theres eight days left before the election but there are not Many Campaign days. Two Campaign Days and possibly three are gone. President obama woke up this morning in orlando thought he was going to do an event. They cancelled his appearance there. Hes now back at the white house. Hes already lopped off his entire tuesday schedule. Mitt romney on the other hand is trying to find this balance. The fact of the matter is we know this is the october surprise, is this storm. The campaign has frozen in place as far as all the polls are concerned. The question now though who benefits from this race freezing . President obama tried to stay ahead of sandy arriving in orlando late sunday 12 hours ahead of schedule. Mitt romney cancelled his weekend events in virginia instead spending sunday with his running mate paul ryan on a bus tour through ohio. Know right now some people in the country are a little nervous about a storm about to hit the coast and our thoughts and prayers are with the people who will find themselves in harms way. Reporter the president is flexing the muscle of incumbency. He spent you sunday afternoon at fema headquarters in washington. We want to make sure were anticipating and leaning forward into making sure that we got the best possible response to what is going to be a big and messy system. Reporter asked whether the storm could affect early voting the president said that remains to be seen. We dont anticipate that at this point but well take a look. Reporter the storm has shaken up the campaign calendar. The president s only event is in orlando after which hell return to the white house. Vice President Biden cut short a New Hampshire Campaign Swing diverting to ohio. The last thing the president and i want to do is campaigning getting in the way of anything. More important thing is peoples safety. Reporter tuesdays schedule is in jeopardy. Mitt romney cancelled a stop in New Hampshire, the president cancelled one in colorado. Theres no let up on campaign attacks particularly on the auto bailout. Mitt romney released a new ad defending himself. Obama took gm and chrysler into bankruptcy and sold chrysler to the italians who will build jeeps in china. Mitt romney will fight for every american job. Reporter john kasich said the bailout impact on ohio has been overstated. When you take into account the companies and suppliers youre up 400 jobs. We didnt grow ohios economy on just one industry. But his predecessor pushed back. I believe that the table was set by president obama and ohioans recognize that and i think thats why the president is going to win ohio. Reporter both campaigns in the wake of sandy have called off fundraising, emails and any fundraising events in any of the affected states. Mitt romneys campaign put out word he spoke with the republican governors of states impacted on the storm,er name dropped Chris Christie and bob mcdonnell. The president will be in the situation room dealing with fema and that fallout. This is the october surprise but we dont know what it all means in eight days. Savannah . Chuck todd, thank you. You dont know how it freezes the race but you certainly know that its a new dynamic into the race and it changes everything with a week to go. The question is how. A lot of people have different theories which candidate it benefits. Ate moment for the president to be commanderinchief, to be president ial, but there are pitfalls with that. It sure is. There are pitfalls because something could go wrong and people could maybe perhaps, the president isnt doing enough. But if this storm is as big as it portends to be, expect command centers up and down the coast and the not be very visible at all of them telling people about the federal dollars on the way and that will be advantage obama. The president will have an opportunity to go to virginia not as a politician but as a president. Somebody there to help out. Somebody there to comfort people. You know, the two bushes, bush 41 and bush 43 had disasters in their handling of hurricanes. George h. W. Bush with andrew which damaged his political career, it was damaged. Of course george w. Bush in 2005 with katrina. Many people in the Bush White House cite that was the low point of his presidency. A lot of dangers also, a lot of political opportunities. Lets get practical. Early voting is happening in these states. Maryland cancelled early voting for the day. How much of an impact is that especially for the Obama Campaign is very much they are dependent on it, talking about it, counting on it. It does have an impact. It moves romney into an awkward situation. Anything he does looks blatantly political or needy hes not in the equation when the country is under siege from a massive storm. They are open but no airline operations. They might as well be closed. You can walk down the hallways but nobody is here. Seven airport hubs are affected along the east coast so that now means youve got virtually every Major Airline affected here. U. S. Airway, american unighted, delta, jetblue, southwest all impacted as they move their planes out of harms way that want creat as Ripple Effect across the entire country with planes and crews out of position. Now take a look at the east coast right now live on flight radar 24 and you can see from virginia up to new york city it is largely cleared out. A few planes still there but as this storm moves in, were seeing fewer and fewer planes here on the east coast and in this heavily trafficked corridor bun last note for you is amtrak has also suspended service between d. C. And new york. Likely up into boston as well as this storm moves further inland and well see how that shakes out tomorrow. But the one point i want to leave you with is you may be out in the midwest or western part of the u. S. Thinking the storm will not affect us. Coast guard helicopters rescued at least 14 crew members from the tall ship hms bounty after it became disabled amid Hurricane Sandy some 90 miles from hatteras, North Carolina. At least two people are still missing and the search is ongoing. The bounty is an 180foot three masted working replica of the famous british ship. Its owner contacted the coast guard last night said she lost contact with the crew. The ship was taking on water in 18foot seas and 40 mileperhour winds. Emergency officials are really worried about the storm surge in parts of new jersey, new york and connecticut. Could be up to 11 feet in parts of this region. The main street of atlantic avenue, im going say maybe half of that is clear. Pacific avenue, part of that is clear. Most of the rest of the city is under water at this time. We have a very kind of muddled picture were seeing right now from high above lot of rain on the lens so we cant see much. Dont paint a picture for us. How far inland has the water reached so far, considering that were approaching a low tide right now. Well not so much inland. Were obviously a Barrier Island so the bay is on one side, the ocean on the other and atlantic avenue the main street in the city is in the middle and thats why that is still clear but either side of the island is inundated at this time. This was an area that was under mandatory evacuation. I dont believe most people left. A great deal did heed that. There are some people still in the city. When the tide recedes well hopefully move a lot more folks either into the offshore shelters or temporary shelters that we have here preceding the next high tide. We had a report a portion of the boardwalk had broken free in the storm surge and was actually floating down the street. How much permanent damage do you expect based on what youre seeing right now . We really dont know at this time. That part of the boardwalk had already been damaged. Thats a little bit of a misnomer. Were in unprecedented territory. We have a feeling that this next high tide will set records and really surpass the march storm of 62 by substantial amount. Were in unchartered territory at this time. Very quickly have any sense of how high the water is there . Well, were talking about the next high tide now, im assuming somewhere around the 8. 5, close to 9, the next high tide they are calling for substantially past 9, possibly past 10 which is a chance that the bay would meet the ocean if that happens. Which is obviously not a good situation for the people of Atlantic City. Mr. Glass our thoughts and prayers with you and the folks down there. Thank you very much. Reporter well, we just got word that they have now closed the garden state parkway which is a major roadway here in new jersey. Its closed from Atlantic City exit 38 all the way down to cape may. So thats about 30 miles or so of roadway that is now closed in both directions. As we look at today, you can see again the northeast obviously dominated by sandy with the Pacific Northwest looking at some wet weather as well, one to two inches of rain. Southwest into Southern California looking pretty good. For tomorrow as sandy makes its way inland, you can see a real mess in the northeast, more rain, more wind and snows back through the Northern Ohio river valley. More rain spreading in to the plains. We got plenty of sunshine though through the 8 34 on a monday morning. We have thick fog. Dangerous driving conditions from San Francisco and across the Golden Gate Bridge and san mateo, you have a couple of feet of visibility. Fog will not last long. We expect it to clear by 10 00 today. 80 degrees in livermore. 72 in oakland today. 70 degrees as we welcome home our San Francisco giants. And thats your latest weather. Al thanks. Virginia Virginia Beach, virginia on this monday morning, thats the 14th street pier and the waves growing even though the storm theres a huge one hitting the bottom part of that pier, the storm has now moved beyond there and is heading for new jersey and new york and connecticut and long island. The combination of high winds, heavy rain, Power Outages expected, you could be stuck inside for an extended period of time. Dr. Gayle salts and Kathy Perlman are here to talk to parents about how you can manage the stress from this storm especially for your children. Good morning to boston you. Parents are getting ready, they are watching the news, they are waiting, they are preparing the house and stocking up. You got to remember your kids are watching all this as well. What type of anxiety levels do you expect for kids . Families feed off of each other and kids look to their parents for the anxiety level. So if youre very nervous and showing it it will absolutely affect them even if they really know whats going on and think its okay. As youre being safe and doing things like moving outfor furniture and pruning trees and taping windows the kids are looking at that and say wait a second this is going bad. You need to inform your kids youre taking the safety precautions put to discuss with them all the ways that you and your community are being safe and taking measures because that will be reassuring. At the same time you want to discuss the storm, like this is a storm, do you understand what a storm is, et cetera. And that want also, that kind of knowledge will help them keep calm. Not all kids are alike. You have different age levels and you have to deal with each one in a different way. You want to talk to them in an age appropriate way. Say its a lot of wind and water and it will be noisy. You want the older ones to help you out. They can do more work aroundthehouse. But i think the older ones are more stressed than the younger ones. The younger ones dont have a frame of reference. The older ones understand the News Coverage more and perhaps lived through past storms. You have to remind them this is not katrina. Older ones will remember that and think thats what a hurricane is and that many people therefore are destined to die. You want to talk to them and do it by asking them questions. Dont leave it up to guesswork. Exactly. You want to say what are your questions, what do you think is going on. You want to understand what their fantasies are so you can correct them. You think this is also an opportunity for families. My wife is great at turning these things into somewhat fun events for the kids. Its going to be a sleep over in the parents room and its a day off of school and we watch movies as long as we have power. What else . Very often parents say they dont have enough time with your kids. Break out all the stops. Take the pillows and make a fort. Make a cake. Frosting and sprinkles. Have a stash of things that dont require power. Card games. Get back to the basics. Monopoly and clue. There will be future storms. When you create this kind of an environment then the childs memory is impacted with this and it makes them less cared going forward. Gayle brings up a good point once the storm is past thats the scary part. Thats where the wind and rain makes the house creak. If youre trapped indoors and have no power thats Something Else the kids need to under. Let your kids know youll be there for them. Were all together. This is a special time, something well always remember. Youll tell your kids about it. Make it fun. Call the neighbors. Make it a community effort. Actually if you go out anticipate help in the community afterwards with the clean up that also gives kids a wonderful feeling of having power, having ability to help and everybody feels good. Thats a wonderful thing to do. Gayle you said earlier families retook this as a family and sometimes parents dont understand the stress that even they are feeling. Yes. So they are worried about their kids but they dont stop to take care of their own anxiety. Like the airplane put our own oxygen mask on first. Thats so important. Take a few minutes, go in a room, calm yourself, do some deep breathing, do some muscle relaxing to just take the edge off yourself because otherwise its very hard to translate to your kid not to be nervous. Again a family time and yes theres some dangers out there but use it as an opportunity to do the things you dont normally get to do. All right, ladies, thanks very much. Millions have been warned that they could end up with without power for days maybe weeks. Good morning. Well, its a little late now the storm is on its way but there are some things you can do aroundthehouse, the first thing you say to do is declutter your area. Decluttering is something you need to do just relative to a blackout because when the power goes down theres no lights you cant see. If you have a very cluttered space, if your home is cluttered, your apartment is cluttered you run the risk of bumping into things, hurting yourself and things like that. Thats one of the things you want to do. Also unplug, if you have any Power Outages unplug your appliances, even your refrigerator because what happens is when the power is restored that there can be voltage surges that can damage the equipment, your microwave, computers and things like that. Unplug everything. If you have a surge protector, just turn it off. Make sure the light isnt on. No current coming through it. Thats another thing that you can do. Even with the perishable food items butter, eggs, meat, if you can keep your stuff in the freezer and keep the freezer like closed, dont keep opening and closing it it will keep for about a day and even if you have a deep freezer it will keep for two days. All your flash lights and batteries in one place so if its dark when the power goes out you know where to find them. If you need to do something immediately its bad. Put your hands on it Nuclear Weapon need a plan in place for the kids and elderly. Yeah. Because we have a lot of seniors. A lot of people infirmed with illnesses and all sorts of things. We need plans information. So its really important to the that right now, what they need in terms of prescription medication, if they need specific medication then youve got to go and get it. If they need refills do it now while you still can because when the storm starts to hit and even the aftermath a lot of the stuff wont be available. Its important to get that done. Cell phones and computers. Cell phones, keep them charged and also got to Keep Computers served. Save all your data. Put them in memory sticks. Burn cds. People can purchase inverts. They can purchase laptop inverters at some of the stores where you can plug your laptop into your car. You know just in case you want to use it an you dont have extra batteries you can charge up. Thats a great thing to have. If the lights go out, people have flash lights. They use candles. No candles. If you have to use candles, then please, please, i say to all the virus, if youve got use candles make sure its not near anything combustible, no pets that can knock them down. Children. If you can purchase an l. E. D. Lantern do that. Try not to use candles because they can be very dangerous. What about plumbing . Sometimes if the power goes out that means you cant flush the toilet. If its a long term situation not to get gnarly on you, but on the other hand, you might have to use a bucket and you can use kitty litter and essentially it is just like a cat because if you cant flush your toilet for an extended period of time nature calls youll have to go. So youll have to get creative and have to use these tools to do what you need to do. Lets hope that we dont get to that point. All right. Good advice this morning. Thank you. Well be back with much more of our special storm coverage but first this is today on nbc. Theres narragansett, rhode island. Again outside of the Hurricane Force winds area of Hurricane Sandy. But still the surf kicking up as it has been all morning long. That is the story up and down the east coast from virginia all the way up to rhode island. Right now even you can see behind us here in new york city the weather has now taken a turn for the worse. Its raining fairly heavily after kind of holding off for a long period of time. Al roker is at Point Pleasant beach in new jersey. I dont know what, al about an hour from us here, is that about right . Reporter yeah. Just about, matt. And it is, as you say, even in narragansett they are feeling Tropical Force Winds because even though sandy is about 250 miles south new york city Tropical Force Winds extend out from the center more than 500 miles. Youre talking about a radius give or take of about 900 miles and its pretty impressive. A lot of folks, they are taking precautions. They closed the garden state parkway from Atlantic City where as youve been reporting theres extensive flooding all the way down to cape may, new jersey. The bridges that connect philadelphia to new jersey, theres four of them, theyve been shut down. In the new york metropolitan area they closed the holland tunnel and the battery tunnel. So, you know, as those winds increase the limit for the bridges is about 60 Miles Per Hour. They are going to shut those off. So unless if they keep the midtown tunnel open it probably will be that manhattan will be cut off from the rest of new york. At least for the next 12 hours or so or more. And as this system now makes its turn, the concern for the storm surge is really what were most bothered. Yes, theres going to be a lot of rain but weve had a lot of rain before. This storm surge coming at an astro astronomical tide. It could be devastating. A lot of moving parts here. Again, were talking about excuse me. Were talking about blizzard conditions out through West Virginia and parts of western virginia. So, this really is a storm that a lot of us in the meteorology world have been talking about. How far seen Something Like it . No. Its unprecedented. Weve been on the air for the better part of five hours. Youve been standing on that beach for our viewers for some time. Are you near some place where you can get some respite from this storm . Reporter yeah. Were staying at a little hotel that has, is right here on the beach that they opened up for us. And so we have our cameraman and our audio guy, they are protected as best they can. They are in the hotel on a balcony. I think they are having massages too. [ laughter ] im sure. We appreciate you throwing them under the bus that way. All right, buddy, well check with you a little later. All right. Okay. I want to get to jonathan in freeport, long island, the south shore of new yorks long island. Weve seen coastal flooding, even a fire there. Jonathan good morning what are the conditions that you see there . Reporter good morning to you savannah. The high tide from this morning may have recede but you can see the water still remains here in much of the streets in this lowlying seaside community. These rivers if you will causing a huge problem for those First Responders, firefighters trying to get to those emergency calls like the one you can see clearly behind me. This call came in about 45 minutes ago, an hour ago and the crews quickly rushed here. Unfortunately really complicating their Response Time as you can imagine, all of the water that is here in the streets. Right now im wade in about a foot deep of water. As you walk and drive through here its anywhere two to three feet. By the time the crews got here that fire engulfed this home. Its now been put out. Fortunately were told nobody was inside at the time. This community is under that mandatory evacuation. Those people evacuated and this fire unfortunately happening as they were away and now they are going to have to return to this after the storm. Now, in terms of Response Time, they are getting to another fire just down the block. There are a number of fires that they are responding to. Another concern they are having Something Else complicating their Response Times is all the calls they are getting from people that did not evacuate, a number of people have decided to stay in their homes here in this area are finding all this water when they walk outside and are saying okay its time for us to go and time to take this storm seriously. They find out their cars cant make it through. On top of these firefighters responding to serious calls like these fires they are having to deal with all those people that did not heed these warnings, did not take them seriously and need these fire crews to come and get them. Theres been several trips of a few different families have had to be picked up from their homes and brought to ladder one the fire company is thats responsible for all of this. Fire crews say they will have to dont receive these calls. They are sure they will be making more rescues as this day goes on. Again this was high tide from this morning that sparked all these calls. High tide this evening as we heard al talk about will bring a surge that could be six to 11 feet. They are saying it will be more severe, firefighters will be more on call as the day and night goes on. Back to you. Jonathan, thank you very much. Thats the point about this. Im matt lauer along with Savannah Guthrie. We saw a picture of Battery Park City and the statue of liberty. President obama is being briefed on the storm right now. He is expected to make a statement later this hour. Well bring it to you live when that happens. And some other news this morning. New york citys mayor Michael Bloomberg Just Announced Public Schools will be closed again tomorrow. Travel is not going very well at all anywhere in the country today because of the problem here on the east coast. Amtrak has cancelled all northeast service more than 8600 flights have been cancelled as well. Lets go to tom costello as Reagan National airport with more on that side of the story. Tom, good morning again. Reporter good morning. This is the way airports look in this particular area of the country that is getting hit by sandy. You can roll a bowling ball down there and not hit anybody. Its that way at Reagan National airport, dulles and many others along the east coast. I want to tell you we just got word from the Authority Authority in new york, new jersey that they have reports of flooding up on to the runways at Laguardia Airport and weve heard that may be happening at jfk airport in new york. As this water moves inland you can see whats happening to the manger airports. Heres the total flight cancellation so far. Were approaching 9,000. 8962 at this hour according to flightaware. Com. The number tomorrow is right now at 2,500 but its going to be growing as the day and the days go forward. The airports affected it is reagan where we are. Dulles. Baltimore. Philadelphia as well as the new york city area. Newark, laguardia, jfk. We believe that weve also got issues up in hartford because of all of the travel and the traffic thats been pulled out of these airports. Technically the airports are open but the airlines have pulled their planes out of harms way and so youve got very little activity at all here on the east coast, at least in this, you know, this stretch from virginia up to connecticut or so. A total of seven airport hubs are involved, airline hubs so when you got Major Airlines like u. S. Air weighs, like united, like jetblue and american and u. S. Airways and southwest and the list goes on they all are affected and then the Ripple Effect across the country with, of course, personnel out of position and equipment out of position and you can see how this becomes a Ripple Effect. Even if they get operations back to normal on wednesday which is what they are hoping you got two to three days of people not making their flights, trying to get them rebooked. I want will be a real mess. Again their priority is to keep passengers and planes out of harms way. Matt, back to you. Tom costello at reagan nag. We want to get more on the path of the storm. Its making progress this morning towards the east coast, al is in Point Pleasant beach, new jersey. Al whats the latest on the storm . Reporter well, it is intensifying. In the last hour or so it went from 85 mileperhour winds to 90, and we may see another jump in the next couple of hours. Its over the gulfstream and thats warmer water about 80 degree water temperatures and that will fuel the storm as it makes its way towards shore. There will be colder water just before it makes landfall so that may knock it down a little bit. Again, its got Forward Motion northnorthwest at 18 Miles Per Hour. Path of the storm will bring it onshore sometime later this evening. I would say between 8 00 and midnight. A storm surge north of there thats the greatest storm surge of about five to 11 feet abovenormal. Coming in about the time of ast astronomiccal high tide. It will bring a lot of wind. Wind will be a big problem and with trees with a lot of foliage especially the southern portions of the affected areas those will bring down power lines. Theres been some estimates as many as 10 Million People could end up without power before this thing is through. Rain not as bad, i mean its almost like a normal big rain storm. About five to seven inches of rain, some areas may pick up 10 inches which is a lot. Thats why we have coastal flood watches as well. We got snow to talk about, down iran West Virginia mountain areas and western virginia. One to two feet of snow. So this thing has got everything but the kitchen sink in it, matt. Al, thank you very much. You talk about how broad the storm is. Almost 750, 800 miles across. Its affecting people all up and down the east coast. Stephanie gosk further up the coast, shes in narragansett, rhode island. Reporter Hurricane Sandy is still a spectator sport here in narragansett but the conditions have gotten worse. Rain is heavier. Wind gusts around 50 Miles Per Hour. Officials in this state are concerned that people, not just state but new england in general concerned that people arent going take this storm seriously enough because they see the storm track go in over new jersey. They are warning people that this is a huge storm, its going to impact this part of the country and you can see that right behind me. This water right now has been raging against the seawall in narragansett for hours and right now its low tide and a typical low tide at narragansett you have to walk about 200 yards store get to the water. We have a picture that was tweeted by the Port Authority here in new york, new jersey. Thats Laguardia Airport with water on the runway as into underscore the point. We of course have been covering sandy and its impact up and down the east coast but theres other headlines and natalie is over at the news desk with that. Good morning. This morning u. S. Coast guard helicopters rescued at least 14 crew members from the tall ship hms bounty after it became disabled amid Hurricane Sandy. Some 90 miles from hatteras, North Carolina. Two people were still missing. The search is ongoing. The bounty is 180foot three masted working replica of the famous british ship. The owner called the coast guard last night saying she lost contact with the crew. The ship was taking on water in 18foot seas and 40 mileperhour winds. Crew members were able to put on cold water survival suits and life jackets before getting into lifeboats. Sandy is blowing across the campaign trail executeling the president ial candidates schedules in the final lead up to election day. Both candidates have cancelled several events and the president has arrived at the white house to oversee the Emergency Response to sandy. Meantime a new analysis from the Associated Press projects that president obama is poised to clinch enough electoral votes to win the election even as the popular vote remains virtually neck and neck. The Victory Party stretched long into the night for the San Francisco giants fans. Their team swept the world series with a 43 victory in game four last night dominating the Detroit Tigers with a clean sweep. Its the giants second series title in three years. Thousands of people poured into downtown San Francisco streets to celebrate. A few small bone first were set but no report of major danger. Survivors of child sexual abuse are coming together at penn state university. It kicked off sunday as the University Comes to terms with its own recent Sexual Abuse Scandal involving jerry sandusky. If you have a sheet or wall shadow puppets are fun while you still have electricity or if you got electricity its fun go to you tube theres lots of video. They are quite complicated. So a swan, for example i can go like that and theres the tail of the swan. You can create a whole story line and be creative. Really fun. Anybody can do the bunny rabbit. It is fun. Go to you tube. Another game that is a lot of fun hide and seek in the dark with flash lights. This is one of my kids favorite game. Its called flashlight tag. Everybody hides in the dark. One person has the flash light and you go looking for your people. Its like playing hide and seek. When you find them shine the spotlight on them and say their name. It goes like that until you find everybody. Another one, fear factor, theres a dad blogger who came up with this where he hides in the house and the kids have to fine him. As soon as they get close he reaches out and grabs them. During a hurricane that may add to fear. Now here is the fee it game. Take a pillow case. Find a bunch of odds and ends. Nothing sharp or dangerous. Put them into a pillow case. What you do when the lights are off the kids reach in. Pull something out and they can only feel it and they have to guess what is it and so thats really fun. The other thing you can do is play the alien game when they fine these objects they have to find a new use for that object or put it together as if they were an alien in a new interesting inventive way. This is probably my favorite game. My son, this is his creation, 100 . He called it save the ice cream eating contest. Hurricane sandy is already affecting washington, wall street, the campaign trail and now theres a report that potentially the jobs report which is supposed to come out friday could be delayed because of the storm. Lets get to Nbcs Chuck Todd hes political director and chief White House Correspondent hes in the White House Briefing room where the president will address reporters in a few moments. What can you tell bus this report about the jobs report . This first appeared in the wall street journal so we called up the Labor Department bureau of labor statistics is this a possibility. They said it is a possibility the government is shut down today. Its likely to be shut down tomorrow. I dont think a final decision has been made how much of the government will be shut down tomorrow. While they have all of the data in the way the jobs survey works, they dont necessarily have the employees or the staff to process it and have the reports ready to go in time. That said, they are also pushing back on this notion that it will be delayed for sure. Look it depends on how easily staff can get in, can get the job done, their goal is still to release it at 8 30 a. M. Eastern time on friday morning but its just one of the many Little Things that have totally been thrown off. We have romney cancelling all of his events after a davenport event today, the rest of today and tomorrow. No Campaign Events at all for romney or paul ryan. The president already did that. He of course woke up this morning in orlando but decided not to attend the Campaign Event woe do there with bill clinton. He came back here. Got his update. Well get the update from him in a few minutes. He had Campaign Events scheduled for colorado and wisconsin tomorrow. Those are all gone. Right now theres eight days on the calendar but we know at a max there is only six Campaign Days left until the election because these two are gone. You see some activity with surrogates on the campaign trail so clinton went ahead and i take it the republicans are doing something similar . Ann romney is keeping her schedule. The wife of mitt romney. So, yes, bill clinton is doing his schedule. Hes doing the same events that he was going to do with the president except for the virginia portion of it. But they are going, bill clinton goes from florida today, orlando to youngstown, ohio. All of the surrogate stuff is still happening. At that point thats mechanics. Thats about all of these events at this point are about mechanics on the ground get out the vote, identifying the volunteers and supporters you need to identify to people to get them to the polls. Im Savannah Guthrie alongside matt lauer. This storm is huge. Its massive. Directly impacting 50 Million People along the east coast. The Ripple Effects being felt even further all across the country in the form of flight cancellations. More than 8600 flights so far just taken away. We are awaiting a statement from president obama shortly. We plan to bring to it live as it happens. First we want to check in with ann thompson who is in Battery Park City. One of new york citys most vulnerable flood areas. Within the area mayor Michael Bloomberg held a press conference and urged new york towers stay on alert for the storm surge that weve been talking about thats expected to hit the city sometime between 6 30 and 10 00 tonight. High tide tonight in this area is scheduled at 8 50 and thats when everyone is really worried that the worst could happen because you got all this rain that is coming in. You got the rising sea level. Its somewhat calmer because the tide is going out. It will be coming back in and they expect its already breached the lower end of the promenade here. It did that earlier this morning. It could be even far worse tonight. So mayor bloomberg once again told all those people who were in zone a the area thats been ordered to evacuate if youre still there for some reason you decided to ride out this storm and you can leave, leave now because it will be too late when the storm surge hits later tonight. They expect another 24 hours of bad weather and as a result city schools will be closed tomorrow. Were also seeing major traffic arteries closed in the city. The brooklyn battery tunnel and holland tunnel will close at 2 00 eastern time this afternoon. Portions of the fdr drive on the east side of manhattan have been closed and the central tube of the lincoln tunnel has also been shut down. So things are there are fewer an fewer openings you have to leave the city, fewer options to get around as the weather gets considerably worse. A lot of worries about Power Outages as well. Lets go down to the jersey shore where we find al roker. Good morning. Reporter good morning, guys. Again, the winds have picked up. We at least survived the last high tide. The ocean came up a little bit about halfway up these dunes and then started to recede. But the next high tide well most likely not be so lucky. Right now sandy is at 90 mileperhour winds. It is since the last update its probably about 250 to 240 miles southsouthwest of new york city. Southsoutheast of new york city. Its moving northnorthwest at 18 Miles Per Hour. Path of the storm, most likely will come somewhere midcoast on new jerseys coastline later this evening probably right near the astronomical high tide. And then it makes its way inland. In the meantime the storm surge, the big problem, storm surge anywhere of five to 11 feet above the normal 9 33. Well looking really good here in san jose. We have thick pockets of fog from san mateo to the peninsula. Watch out for thick fog. We have low visibility in santa rosa and less than 200 feet in san mateo. Theres a weather buoy out in the ocean off of block island that recorded 20 1 2 foot waves just off the coast of block island. Thats off the coast of here. Good indication of how strong this storm is and how it is affecting new england. Its a concern of state officials here in rhode island and in other New England States that residents arent going to take this seriously enough because they are going to look at the storm track and think oh, well it will hit new jersey and well be okay. The governor was here in narragansett. He had that message for people along this seawall telling them look you have to take this seriously. Were going to get flooding. Maybe not a lot of rain. Good day as we come to you we are monitoring huicane sandy which is about to impact the east coast of the United States and president obama who was just briefed about the storm is expected to make remarks from the White House Briefing room this morning having flown back from florida cancelling his appearance at a political event there this morning. We want to get to chuck todd who is in the Briefing Room. What are we kpeblting to hear. Designee just got an update in the situation room from all of the places along the shore, also from fema, he was meeting with Homeland Security secretary, the head of fema. We hope to see some of those folks out here with the president as well. He woke up in orlando this morning, was is going to a Campaign Event but cancelled that to monitor the storm. Chuck, we should mention here we are eight days to go until the election. This morning well be hearing from the president as the president not from barack obama the candidate for reelection. Thats right. And, you know, as we also found out today, the president cancelled all Campaign Events today and tomorrow, governor romney has also cancelled all Campaign Events after won that hes doing one this morning the rest of today and tomorrow. Theres eight days left on the calendar but six on the campaign trail and yes the president hes doing hes got a job to do today. Governor romney making the decision to stay off the television. He has made remarks this morning saying that thoughts and prayers are with those on the east coast who are struggling to deal with Hurricane Sandy, a story thats very much still developing at this hour. Chuck, how are the candidates expected to handle this over the coming days, do you think they will continue to cancel events . Well we know that they are going to tone down some remarks. Its a daybyday. The question is how do they go back to getting on the campaign trail wednesday. A lot of it depends on what is the damage and how many people are without power. Theres all sorts of unknowables at this point to figure that out but you can definitely know that the remarks that will be made on the trail, it will be a different tone both from the president and from governor romney as they go through the next few days. The president is supposed to come out at any moment. Let me bring in David Gregory. David although the president is acting in his role as commanderinchief and not a candidate this is an opportunity to show voters out there how he does his job. The two are never separated. The president is in Campaign Mode but leading the federal governments Disaster Relief and thats a crucial job. Nevertheless those within the white house are nervous about the fact that theres two things happening. The race is frozen at the moment. If hes not out campaigning, if the messaging isnt getting through. Then the matter of the federal response and how this potential disaster plays out affecting so many people. Hello, everybody. I just received a full briefing from our Emergency Response teams including fema and agencies that are going to be helpful in the response and recovery efforts, the department of energy, department of transportation, the department of Homeland Security and the department of health and human services. Obviously everybody is aware at this point that this is going to be a big and powerful storm and all across the eastern seaboard i think everybody is taking the appropriate preparations. I have spoken to all the governors in all these states. They have issued emergency declarations, those have been turned around quickly here in the white house. We have prepositioned assets so that fema personnel are working closely with state and local governments. Were making sure that food and water and emergency generation is available for those communities that are going to be hardest hit. We anticipate that the center of the storm is going to hit landfall sometime this evening. But because of the nature of the storm we are certain that this is going to be a slow moving process through a wide swath of the country and millions of people will be affected. So, the most Important Message that i have for the public right now is please listen to what your state and local officials are saying. When they tell you to evacuate, you need to evacuate. Do not delay. Dont pause. Dont question. The instructions that are being given because this is a serious storm and it could potentially have fatal consequences if people havent acted quickly. The good news is that the governors and local officials i think have had a few days of preparation. Theres been extraordinarily close coordination between state, federal and local governments. And so were confident that the assets are prepositioned for an Effective Response in the aftermath of the storm. But keep in mind, that for folks who are not following instructions, if youre not evacuating when youve been asked to evacuate, youre putting First Responders at danger. Were going to have to have searchandrescue teams in and around multiple states all at the same time and although we got coast guard and the department of defense all positioned, if the public is not following instructions that makes it more dangerous for people and it means that we could have fatalities that could have been avoid. Transportation is going to be tied up for a long time and the most Significant Impact for a lot of people in addition to flooding is going to be getting power back on. We anticipate that there will be a lot of trees down. A lot of water. And despite the fact that Power Companies are working very closely with their various state officials and local officials to make sure they are bringing in as many assets as possible and getting those ready in preparation for the storm the fact is a lot of these emergency crews cant get info signatures to start restoring power until these winds have died downed and because of the nature of the storm that may take several days. The public should anticipate that theres going to be a lot of Power Outages and i want may take time for that power to get back on. The same is true with transportation. A lot of backlogs and even after the storm has cleared its going to take considerable amount of time for airlines, subway, trains and so forth potentially to get back, you know, on schedule depending on the amount of damage that has occurred. Let me summarize im grateful for the cooperation of our state and local officials. The conversations that ive had with all the governors indicate that at this point there are no unmet needs. I think everybody is taking this very seriously. We got prepositioned all the resources that we need but right now the key is to make sure that the public is following instructions. For those of you who still need Additional Information about how to respond go to ready. Gov, thats ready. Gov and that website should provide you with all the information that your family needs in terms of how you can prepare for this storm. Our thoughts and prayers go out to all the people who are potentially affected. We are extraordinarily grateful for our First Responders because they are going to be working 24 7 around the clock nonstop and i want to make sure that our thoughts and prayers go out to all those who may end up be dealing with the very difficult situation over the next several days. Last point ill make though. This is a big storm, difficult storm. The great thing about america is when we go through tough time like this we all pull together. We look out for our friends, we look out for our neighbors. And, you know, we set aside whatever issues we may have otherwise to make sure we respond appropriately and with swiftness and thats exactly what i anticipate will happen here. So, i want to thank all the federal teams, state and local teams that are in place. Im confident that were ready. But i think the public needs to prepare for the fact this will take a long time for us to clean up. The good news is we will clean up and we will get through this. All right. What about the impact on the election, sir . Im not worried at this point about the impact on the election. Im worried about the impact on families and worried about the impact on our First Responders. Im worried about the impact on our economy. And on transportation. The election will take care of itself next week. Right now our number one priority is to make sure that we are saving lives, that our searchandrescue teams will be in place, people will get the food, water, shelter that they need in case of emergency and that we respond as quickly as possible to get the economy back on track. Thats president obama in the Briefing Room of the white house saying that he has been fully briefed on the impact that Hurricane Sandy will have on People Living along the east coast of the United States. He described it as a big powerful storm and said hes certain it will be a slow moving event thats going to impact a wide area. He said hes spoken to the governors of the states that will be affected and i think three or four times he said he is completely satisfied that they have prepositioned the assets that will be needed to handle an Effective Response in the wake of this storm. Lets go back to David Gregory our moderator of meet the press. David what did you hear . In a way its very practical information coming from the president of the United States. Powerful. Im surprised he didnt say you shouldnt get your lawn furniture in. Some of that basic information is important. Coming from him, warning people that power will be out, warning people to listen when your local Officials Say that you got to stay indoors and evacuate if youve been asked to do that, look he understands well the lessons of hurricane katrina. They had the advantage here of some preparation and he wants people to heepd those warnind t. Getting federal Government Back to work and School Systems back open the power could be out for a number of days and winds will have to die down before those extra crews in the midatlantic i can tell you from monitoring reports this morning can get about business of trying to restore power. So i think all of that was striking and then as he said hes not worried about the election. The reality is they realize things are frozen in the election which is never desirable. Right now hes in ohio and just about 30 minutes ago he wrapped up an address speaking to supporters in the community of avon lake, ohio about the need to support Hurricane Relief efforts and about the need to win the state of ohio. I dont think theres been a hurricane in ohio in a long time but theres been some hurricanes that cause ad lot of damage across this country and hurt a lot of families and families in harms way that will be hurt in their possession or smothering severe. So i would like to ask you to think about making a contribution to the red cross or to another Relief Agency to be of help if you possibly can in any way you can imagine to help those who are in harms way. Were counting on ohio. I know the people of the Atlantic Coast are counting on ohio and the rest of our states but i also think that people of the entire nation are counting on ohio. Because my guess is my guess is that if ohio votes me in as president ill be the next president of the United States. Thank you so very much.
