The season, today, monday, november 25th, 2013. Announcer from nbc news, this is today with matt lauer and Savannah Guthrie, live from studio 1a in rockefeller plaza. And good morning everyone. Welcome to today on a monday morning. Im Savannah Guthrie. Im David Gregory. Happy to be here. Matt is off today. Im here with al roker and Natalie Morales as well. Did you guys see the game . It ended after midnight. Yeah, 12 20 a. M. Horrible first half. Tom brady did it again. I woke up for the end. Perfect. Perfect timing. That was just an amazing second half. And weather, a big factor in the game. Always about the weather with you. Listen, the weather is already the top story this morning because we have a big winter storm that could impact tens of millions of Holiday Travelers. We have full coverage including dylan dreyer and tom costello on the roads and the airports. But al, we will begin with you. Before this thing is over it will effect 25 states, 40 Million People and of course it will culminate with thanksgiving day or wednesday travel right before thanksgiving. We have Winter Weather advisories, winter storm warnings, that area of pink is the icy conditions were going to see. This storm will transfer its energy to the gulf. Tons of moisture available to it. So by early Tuesday Morning were looking at heavy thunderstorms, wind and rain, snow developing to the north. During the day it lifts up inland so that the heavy rain will stay along the coast as you get to the north and west. By early wednesday morning its mostly snow and then by wednesday evening snow showers, cold, windy conditions behind this system and look at the rainfall amounts. We are talking 5 to 7 inches of rain through the south. As you get up along the east coast were looking at anywhere from 3 to 5 inches of rain and look at the snow. Were talking about 3 to 6 inches. Some areas as much as a foot. Interior sections of pennsylvania and new york. The big story the icing conditions making their way into the northern dallas area on into arkansas. We have dylan dreyer right now live in dallas and dylan, temperatures hovering just above freezing. If it drops much, its going to be a nightmare. Reporter thats absolutely right, al. This is our saving grace. We have stayed above freezing in dallas. This storm system is being blamed for 13 deaths. Most of those because of the dangerous road conditions. To protect and serve. And push. A Police Officer helps out in new mexico. Across the southwest, it was best to stay off the roads. Spinouts and pileups. Too many to count. It was good when i got here. Now it is sleet and windy. Reporter over the weekend, the same storm system lashed california with heavy rain which led to heavy flooding. And one helicopter rescue. Strong gusts ripped down power lines. The wind fuelling a wildfire north of San Francisco. And then theres the snow. 15 inches in parts of nevada. Great for ski resorts, but dangerous driving in oklahoma, texas and new mexico. Now millions of Holiday Travelers are in the part of the storm are worried about the travel plans. A driver in oklahoma has advice worth following. Go slow and keep your distance. Reporter as the east braces itself, preparations can be measured in cords of wood. We watch the weather and anticipate people coming. Reporter now this area here in dallas is called the high five. It is five levels of chris crossing overpasses. It is a really good thing we stayed just above freezing in dallas. The bridges and overpasses that freeze first. We escaped that threat here in dallas, but we are now seeing some of the heaviest freezing rain from just northeastern texas right across arkansas. It is glazing the roads and were being told and getting reports it is a sheet of ice. We certainly are seeing travel conditions just to the north of here and that means that the Holiday Travel week is off to a horrible start. Dylan, thank you very much. Expect delays and cancellations. The storm makes its way from dallas and up the east coast. We have tom cost tekos tecost t with the latest at reagan. Reporter david, good morning. A balmy 25 degrees here in the nations capitol. We have smooth sailing around the east coast and midatlantic but thats going to change in the coming days. 3 Million People are taking to the skies. We have about 340 Flight Cancellations today according to flightaware. Com. 650 cancellations yesterday. So far today at dallas, 300 flights have been cancelled. Thats about 180 departures and 104 arrivals. 170 American Eagle flights cancelled as well. Dallas is a big choke point we will be watching. Take a look at the cam from Reagan International airport here in washington. So far today its going to be a nice day but thats going to change in the coming hours. Heavy rain and heavy wind across the midatlantic up into the east coast and well be watching closely, everything from washington to new york to boston. The midsection of the country as well. Chicago, st. Louis. In the coming hours and days this is going to change dramatically with rain and heavy wind and snow as well. Guys, back to you. Tom costello in washington for us this morning. Thanks. Now to politics. The fallout with the Historic Nuclear Deal with iran. Critics are already lining up. Andrea mitchell is our nbc chief correspondent and is on the story. Andrea, good morning. Reporter good morning, savannah. The iran deal came together after a year after secret talks between top u. S. Officials and iran all without the knowledge of israel or other key american allies. In the wake of the iran deal the big question this morning, what next . Its the effort to get the comprehensive agreement which will require enormous steps in terms of verification, transparency and accountability. Reporter the agreement temporarily freezes the Nuclear Program for six months. In return iran gets what the white house calls modest sanctions relief. The burden is on iran to prove to the world that its Nuclear Program will be exclusively for peaceful purposes. Reporter but israels Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu quickly condemned the agreement. Its a historic mistake. Reporter the president called netanyahu sunday but they disagree on the threat and the goal. The Obama Administration wants to prevent iran from developing a Nuclear Weapon but netanyahu wants to stop them from having the capability to even produce one. We think its important to keep the pressure up. Not to ease pressure before you get them through the heavy lifting before they dismantle their centerfuges. Reporter on this saudi arabia agrees with israel and many worry the threat isnt diminished. I just want to see this all the way through. They now have Nuclear Weapons and i dont want to see that happen in iran. Reporter even some experts remain skeptical. Youre not going to know how significant, whether this is the historic breakthrough many claimed or a historic mistake for at least another six months. Andrea, you mentioned there were secret talks that went on for a year with the u. S. Officials and iranian counterparts. What can you tell us about that . Well these all went on with bill burns and other leaders in the gulf country and all without the knowledge of the arab leaders, israel and the western powers as well. Israel, netanyahu was told by the president in september and thats why he has been so fiercely angry at the United States. That as well as the saudis. Thank you so much. A deal tied to u. S. Involvement in afghanistan hit a road block this morning. Natalie is here with that. Good morning to you all. Enable u. S. Troops to operate in the country beyond next year, but afghan president karzai indicated it may have that wait. Richard engel is in eastern afghanistan with the latest on this on going debate. Good morning. Reporter good morning, we just finished a battlefield circulation with commander of u. S. Troops in this part of eastern afghanistan. He showed us how afghan troops are now leading the fight and that he used to have about 50 outposts in this area and now american troops only hold about 13 bases including this one. This is one of the socalled enduring bases. Bases that could stay on in this country beyond 2014 if the government in kabul and washington approve a joint security deal that could see thousands of american troops staying in this country for years to come. Over the weekend, a group of tribal elders in kabul decided they want this deal. They want u. S. Troops to stay because its good for security. It helps the Afghan Security forces fight al qaeda and fight the taliban but then afghanistans president said not yet. He wont sign the deal until the United States shows more signs of good faith and does more, in his words, to bring security to this country. For now it seems this joint security deal and the future of american troops in this country is on hold. Natalie. Shootings will be released today. The report comes almost a year after a gunman took the lives of 20 students and six staff members. It was expected to be released in june but was pushed back to the fall. Families of the victims were briefed in advance of the report being released later today. The vatican for the first time publicly unveiled a handful of bone fragments reportedly belonging to the first pope, st. Peter. They were displayed during a mass sunday. Pope francis prayed before the bone fragments at the start of the service and then clutched the case in his arms for several minutes. No pope has ever definitively declared they belonged to peter. Some archaeologists dispute the findings. As you heard it was a comeback for the ages, the battle of the quarterbacks as Peyton Manning faced tom brady on sunday night football. This lived up to the hype. The Denver Broncos lead the new England Patriots 240 at halftime, but the pats came roaring back. New england took the lead when edelman got a touchdown. The game went into overtime and it was a critical mistake by denvers tony carter accidentally touching the ball after a punt. The equivalent of a fumble there. New england rae covered and the pats were left with an easy 31 yard field goal attempt. Gostkowski kicks it in. A game that ended after midnight at 12 20 a. M. Pats win it 3431. I think the celebration is still ongoing. A lot of us blearyeyed. I was going to say, i cant even stay up for the 4 00 p. M. Game. It started well after 8 00. I was in rem sleep. Thats impressive. I kept waking up during the second half for these great highlights. Without having it to sit there and be up the whole time. Yeah. Mr. Roker, you cant stay up late. You have too much work to do in the weather department. Not only do we have the moisture to talk about, we have for the eastern half of the country arctic cold to talk about as well. Philadelphia today setting a record low dropping down to 20 degrees. First record of the season. That High Pressure moves off but then theres reinforcing cold air coming in. By thanksgiving day, the eastern half of the country going to be 15 to 30 degrees below average with brisk winds. You can see that cold air really starting to come on in. But if you look out to the west, they have good news. Around the backside of that high, weve got warmer than usual temperatures anywhere from 10 to 15 degrees above normal for our friends out west. Were going to get to your local forecast coming up in the next 30 seconds. Get to your local 7 14. Happy monday morning to you. Im meteorologist christina loren. Temperatures are chilly out there, this is one of the coldest mornings ever the season so far. Overall pretty good. San francisco, mostly clear conditions, we have low clouds clinging to the coast but pretty good. Temperatures are going to end up in the 60s, the peninsula, San Francisco, south bay, nice day in santa rosa, 56 for you and 62 in fremont. Ur latest weather. Guys . All right, al. Thank you so much. Now to a story thats been developing for the last week or so. Attackers, mainly in their teens, targeting victims at random. And we struggled with how to bring this story to you because the images are so disturbing. But over the weekend, there were several new incidents and an arrest. Today National Investigative correspondent jeff rossen is here with the latest. Good morning. Good morning. This is something we wanted to warn you about, because clearly, this keeps on happening. Can you imagine just walking down the street, minding your own business, when somebody punches you in the face for no reason at all . Its called the knockout game. Teenagers knocking people out for the fun of it. They even target women and children. Now cases are piling up, and Police Across the country are on high alert. This morning, youre going to see how vicious it gets. Watch this woman walking down the street. A stranger runs up and clocks her from behind, a sucker punch so brutal, the victim lays on the sidewalk, unable to move. In new jersey, it appears these guys filmed their own attack. Oh the suspects laughing and bragging about it. Quitter in pennsylvania, watch this man on the right side of the screen. A group of teenagers knock him out in broad daylight. No warning at all. He drops face down on to the curb. The victim, this school teacher, who was simply walking home. I was hit with one punch that knocked me to the cold concrete. My body and face were bruised. Its a horrific thing to see, and im fortunate that im alive here to tell you about it. Police fear the knockout game has been spreading with cases from san diego to st. Louis and chicago. In syracuse, two men were killed in possible knockout cases. In new york city, police are investigating at least seven attacks and have made one arrest. It appears these are just random acts of violence. Theres no robbery. Its just simply youths making the decision theyre going to try to punch somebody out, sometimes as simple as a 5 bet between themselves. Like 17yearold marvel weaver, who admits he played a marvel weaver who admits he played a version of knockout using a stun gun. He was caught and is now in jail. Its just a lesson learned. People go along with it and one thing leads to another and it just goes all downhill. Reporter downhill for the teens who do it and the victims who continue to suffer. These kids are acting maybe not thinking and not knowing the consequence of what could happen. Reporter here in new york city, the man arrested for playing the knockout game has been charged with a hate crime. Police believe the victim was targeted because hes jewish. Now as these videos end up on youtube and elsewhere online, officials are worried that theyre are going to be copy cat attacks elsewhere in the country. Thats why i wanted to bring this to you. Theyre targeting anybody. Maybe a severe penalty will put a little sense into some of these guys. Jeff, thank you very much. Lets head over to tamron. She skois covering for carson t morning. Speaking of weather, we want to get to the dangerous storm in this country. Al has the latest. Its responsible for 13 deaths. Lets show you what is happening now. You can see the system now making its way up the coast. By tomorrow afternoon its heavy rain along the coast. Massive snow back to the west and as we make our way into wednesday its all rain but, again, windy conditions and snow. In fact, right now ron is in Oklahoma City with whats going on there. Started the day with icing, ron. Whats happening right now. Reporter good morning from Oklahoma City. That rain overnight coated the cars and now we have ice. All that means rush hour traffic has snarled up. 20 vehicle accidents reported on the interstates. Yesterday, we had 6 to 10 inches of snow in the oklahoma area. It is a good coating of ice, which is a problem on the cars, but also on the sidewalks. You need to step outside and be careful so you dont have a trip to the doctor. Back to you guys. Arent we all . We dont know that, but we do know which companies are featured in Consumer Reports report card, the naughty or nice list. Good morning, savannah. Just to be clear, these are companies in names, not about their policies in general, but those that are naughty or nice. Its not a judging or rating of the company as a whole, just a particular policy at a time of year consumers are most vulnerable because were out there buying, assessi ining goo and services. And some Companies Got back to us and some didnt. Starting with naughty, you put amazon. Why . They recently raised the minimum for free super saver shipping from 25 to 35 at a time when, again, a lot of people are going to be buying, so, its up 10 from where they have been for a long time. And amazon points out they have not raised shipping rates in many years and had a statement saying fast, Free Shipping is not a holiday promotion. We work hard to offer the best price available anywhere, every day. Best buy, you give them a naughty put them on the naughty list for what reason . When it comes to return policies, were all looking at them carefully this time of year, but best buys kind of struck us as quite stern. Even if you bring a receipt and have a receipt, you need to present a photo i. D. When you bring back an item and they reserve the right to basically retain the data thats on your i. D. To track future return behavior. And if it doesnt measure up to whatever their criteria are, you may be ineligible for a return for up to 90 days. All right, so theyre trying to strike out against serial returners. Best buy said this was to prevent fraudulent returns and is standard industry practice. Okay, we move on. Lord taylor got on the naughty list, why . Hey, a sale is a sale is a sale unless its not a sale. Were all hearing the biggest, baddest, the best sales this time of year, but lord taylor had the ultimate oneday sale, 20 off, except when you looked at the list of exclusions, numbering 70 categories and brands. Things that werent on sale. We wondered what was on sale, actually. Including watches, beauty, cosmetics, women designer koit indeed. Not much of a sale. Lets end on a high note. Sure. You put a bank on the nice list. Yes. Citi banks citi simplicity card, they have late fee forgiveness. If you miss a payment theres never a fee which typically runs 15 to 35. Of course repeated bad behavior if you miss payments if youre late will return your credit score and youll probably lose your credit account but thats a nice thing, late fee forgiveness. Lands end gets a nice listing for a generous return policy. You can return any item at any time for any reason. Thats good. Finally for travelers, southwest airlines. Why do you like this airline . Were all flying this time of year, except when the storms come in. But airlines have to give you 24 hours to cancel a policy. Basically theyre telling you that you can switch your flight at any time for any reason and make that change without incurring a penalty. At some places that could cost you hundreds of dollars. In other words, if theres a difference in fair you have to pay. Exactly. Pay the difference in fairs. My pleasure. There a lot of companies on this list. If you want to see it go to Consumer Reports or our website today. Com. Ringo star comes together with the beatles fans he photographed nearly 50 years ago. And up next, one tough turkey. At first, i took warfarin, but i wondered, could i up my game . My doctor told me about eliquis. And three Important Reasons to take eliquis instead. One, in a clinical trial, eliquis was proven to reduce the risk of stroke better than warfarin. Two, eliquis had less major bleeding than warfarin. And three. Unlike warfarin, theres no routine blood testing. [ male announcer ] dont stop taking eliquis unless your doctor tells you to, as stopping increases your risk of having a stroke. Eliquis can cause serious and in rare cases fatal bleeding. Dont take eliquis if you have an artificial heart valve or abnormal bleeding. While taking eliquis, you may bruise more easily and it may take longer than usual for any bleeding to stop. Seek immediate medical care for sudden signs of bleeding, like unusual bruising. Eliquis may increase your bleeding risk if you take certain medicines. Tell your doctor about all planned medical or dental procedures. Ive got three Important Reasons to up my game with eliquis. Lets get a check of the weather once again with al. Announcer todays weather is brought to you by colgate total. And todays weather has been tough throughout a good portion of the country. Have a great one. This thanksgiving week, as we have done for the last decade, you have a short period of time. What does this mean for you . Ten years ago this very day, we launched the thanksgiving program on the today show. Its been a Guardian Angel to many of these children. We did these stories of our children. 46 of them were on the today show. 43 of them survived. Sadly, three of them did not make it. But all the moms and dads really got a wakeup call on the today show. They were told by their doctors in their local hospitals that they werent going to make it. Some had already chosen funeral music and were taking pictures of them because they wouldnt see them pretty soon. And they came here and they survived. Whats important to know, not those local hospitals theyre not bad hospitals. Theyre very good hospitals but theyre only working with what they know. With st. Judes, were working with what nobody knows because were a Research Center and Cancer Center under one roof. This is a celebration of what we have accomplished in ten years. Reporter Nothing Better than the celebration when you look at the faces with the pictures there. Absolutely. Reporter coming up in a little bit, well have a little bit more. And well meet some of the children up close and personal and tell you a little bit more about, really, the amazing successes and in some cases 40 of those cancers are now being cured. Its also important to note that no child pays when they come to st. Jude and every one comes from a different state, colorado, iowa, illinois, california. St. Jude takes care of children all over the country and the today show has been able to spread that word so kids all over the country can come to st. Jude and be saved. Reporter reason to give thanks. Right, savannah . Absolutely. Love hearing these stories. Well check back in a couple of minutes. When its cold out here, david dances. Just a little bit of that. Now we have a great story you guys. A Good Samaritan that took a chance on a guy that had fallen on hard times and the Unlikely Partnership is about to pay off. Craig melvin has this story. Good morning to you. Good morning, coding is the complex language of computers. Those that master it create software and websites and apps. Learning it is hard, very hard. So imagine doing it while homeless. Leo graham lives on the new york city streets. Patrick walks to work. One day the Software Engineer stops. I just asked him a question. Would you like an offer im a young guy starting out. Thats a lot of dinners. 100 for a laptop and to learn how to code. I will spend an hour a day for two months. Came to an immediate decision. The 100 will last you for a short time but learning how to code will last you for a lifetime. Reporter so patrick bought leo a laptop, three textbooks and got started. Nearly 40,000 on Facebook Follow his progress and cheer him on. He hopes to land a job soon and a place to live, but for leo grand, this is also about shattering stereo types. All Homeless People are mentally ill, lazy, unintelligent. Thats a stigma. It doesnt really matter your living arrangements as long as you have got the mind set to do it and the will, the drive. Give a man a fish you feed him for a day. You teach a man to fish and you watch him change the world. And leos car pooling app is going to be launched in just a few weeks. Thats cool. We have patrick and leo with us. Good morning, guys. Great to see you. Good morning. Can you believe all the attention this has gotten . No. Is it shocking leo. Yeah. So what did you think when somebody comes up a total stranger and says im willing to spend this time with you and teach you to code . Was it a no brainer . You knew what you wanted to do. Yeah, instantly. Was it instant, though . Was there not a split second when you thought this guy is nuts . Should i step out or . I was skeptical at first. And i said give it a shot and see what happens. And patrick, there must have been something about leo that caught your eye and made you think theres more to this person than what im seeing when i pass by. You can tell sometimes. Theres just Something Special about somebody and i mean, hes been amazing. Leo, you have this app that you are very close to being done with. If you could speak to all the potential employers out there, what would you want to say about what you learned and what youre capable of. I know how to do the server and i understand most of the languages. And computer language, tech language and im learning to be good at back end design. And youre also excellent at staying on task. You spend five or six hours a day focused on one project. Yeah, basically. And you dont have a permanent place to live yet, do you . Im staying with a friend. Good. Good. Well, i hope this is the beginning of great things. Thank you. Your teacher says youre kind of brilliant. Almost a photographic memory. Hes right. Whats the name of the app . Trees for cars. Thanksgiving week. Big crowd here on a chilly day. Im willie geist with al roker and Natalie Morales. We were just talking about the weather. There was controversy, some at the American Music awards. Theres always controversy at the award shows. The lineup they had. Every super star in music did a performance. Katy perry opened the show singing a song called unconditionally. She was dressed as a japanese geisha. Take a look and see what you think. [ music playing ] okay so some people watched that and thought there was japanese stereotyping thing. Not the firstperson we have seen dressed in a geisha look but some people are upset. I understand where people think its stereotyping but its an award show and she is dressing in a costume. When you pick an ethnic costume that you are not a member of that ethnicity, some people are going to be offended by that. Some people could look at that as a tribute to the culture. It looks beautiful. Its a beautiful stage production with the graphics and everything behind them. Its a good song. Meanwhile, miley cyrus was ahead another show stopping performance you could say. This time it featured a giant cat and not a giant foam finger. A weeping cat. Check this out. [ music playing ] what does it mean . Its like that will repeat what you say. Maybe thats it. Maybe. Maybe its an anime kind of thing. I dont know. If you have ideas, send them to us. But this young woman is a genius. Everybody is talking about her. Everyone is talking about her. I dont think you have to overthink it. That and the cat costume too. Theres a cat on her costume as well. I didnt see that. Oh, yeah. We have our own. Does he sing along with us. Its not weeping diamonds. Thats amazing. Its kind of cute but i found it distracting from her performance because the whole time i was looking at the cat. If you stop, though, she has a really good voice and she is really talented. She is a great performer. Ill give her that. The line on that bathing suit is getting smaller every time. Its getting higher and theres less in between yeah. Sort of a not that were complaining. Okay, there it is. There it is. Talking about outfits, natalies pants today. I had to climb up on the rocking. Another 14 million plan to order parts of their thanksgiving meal to a restaurant to be delivered and eaten at home. 4 million will get a full thanksgiving meal. Theres nothing like waking up in the morning and smelling that turkey in the oven. My mom would start early in the morning and it would be roasting all day. Thats what i love about doing the thanksgiving day parade to be part of that tradition. I remember growing up in brooklyn and queens. Like you said, your mom making that, were sitting in our pajamas watching the parade and here in new york, after the parade was over you flip over to channel 11 and watch march of the wooden soldiers. Thats great. That tradition. Thats what i love about thanksgiving. It is the noncommercial holiday. At least it was until everybody decided to stay open, all the retailers. Black thursday. Just a lot of stuff for the fans. Thats really giving it to the fans. Its unprecedented for a band like this to put themselves out there online for that period of time. They got a big response. All right. Well, miley cyrus, people cant seem to get enough of her but she is celebrating an occasion. Exactly. She turns 21 on saturday and her birthday weekend didnt start off so great. This is jim, a man who doesnt stand still. But jim has afib, Atrial Fibrillation an irregular heartbeat, not caused by a heart valve problem. That puts jim at a greater risk of stroke. For years, jims medicine tied him to a monthly trip to the clinic to get his blood tested. But now, with onceaday xarelto®, jims on the move. Jims doctor recommended xarelto®. Like warfarin, xarelto® is proven effective to reduce afibrelated stroke risk. But xarelto® is the first and only onceaday prescription blood thinner for patients with afib not caused by a heart valve problem. That doesnt require routine blood monitoring. So jims not tied to that monitoring routine. [ gps ] proceed to the designated route. Not today. [ male announcer ] for patients currently well managed on warfarin, there is limited information on how xarelto® and warfarin compare in reducing the risk of stroke. Xarelto® is just one pill a day taken with the evening meal. Plus, with no known dietary restrictions, jim can eat the Healthy Foods he likes. Do not stop taking xarelto®, rivaroxaban, without talking to the doctor who prescribes it as this may increase the risk of having a stroke. Get help right away if you develop any symptoms like bleeding, unusual bruising, or tingling. You may have a higher risk of bleeding if you take xarelto® with aspirin products, nsaids or blood thinners. Talk to your doctor before taking xarelto® if you have abnormal bleeding. Xarelto® can cause bleeding, which can be serious, and rarely may lead to death. You are likely to bruise more easily on xarelto® and it may take longer for bleeding to stop. Tell your doctors you are taking xarelto® before any planned medical or dental procedures. Before starting xarelto®, tell your doctor about any conditions such as kidney, liver, or bleeding problems. Xarelto® is not for patients with artificial heart valves. Jim changed his routine. Ask your doctor about xarelto®. Once a day xarelto® means no regular blood monitoring no known dietary restrictions. For more information and savings options, call 1888xarelto or visit goxarelto. Com. Nice to see you. Glad to be back. Well make a Little Pumpkin pie brule. This is a Little Pumpkin pie except im italian. You can mix this up. Now, this came up. The spices can go in. Right. There you go. Traditional pumpkin spy spice. The sugars and the eggs. Now, the we do these as individuals. Willie helped me brulee these before. It cam up as one of the things, everybody has somebody in their family that eats the heart of the pie out the day of and you say who did all of this . So as i kid i figured out that you could take the crust and scoop them back in the next day. You have an interesting fact about the canned pumpkin. Its not pumpkin at all. What . Every year i tried using freshed pumpkin. Theyre hard to peel. Who is going to sit there for thousands of hours and peel all of this. Its blue hubbard squash. So Butternut Squash is probably your best bet if you ever want a pumpkin pie that tastes like canned pumpkin but a little bit better. You scoop them right back in. This you can do the day before. This you can mix the day before. You do a little piece of the pie, trick it with a fork. Otherwise the bottom will get soggy. Afterwards you scoop it and bake it as long as i said. It comes out and then you take the sugar and make a brulee out of it. You make it in a way they might not imagine. Do you want to handle the fire in there. Get in there, al. You want to do this. Hold it one spot there. Were doing this. Michael, you and i are going to do the apples here. Right in the middle between a crepe and souffle. Apples and vanilla bean. The vanilla bean is in there. I have to take it out. Youre going to brown the apples. This is one of those things for thanksgiving. You get everybody up off the table. You want to eat it immediately. A little vanilla and a touch of sugar. You just pour this in. Right into a skillet. Right into a hot skillet. The skillet goes into the hot pan. Let this warm up just a touch. This goes in a hot pan. Everybody is waiting nearby. You like an audience when you cook, dont you . Makes it taste better. This goes in the oven . This goes right in the oven. Hes like move it up chef. Yeah. Well trade this one out. Look at that. Come on. That is beautiful. How long did you stick that in the oven . 12 minutes. This is the fun part. Take the bottom of this and pond on it. There you go. Weve all seen our fair share of wedding videos going viral but this takes the cake. It may move you to tears. It certainly brought the bride to tears after an unforgettable tribute by her brother. Were missing somebody pretty important this evening that would be here for the dance with his little girl. So, i decided i wanted to do Something Special for andrea and not only for andrea but for dad, knowing that dad would be elated to be here with us today. [ applause ] so the song butterfly kisses, i sang the song for andrea and for dad. I just wanted to introduce that real quickly before a number of us dance with andrea for the song. As you heard her dad passed away from pancreatic cancer earlier that year and she shares the dance with a grandfather and her brother luke and her brother nick who performed the song and her fatherinlaw. Andrea is here now with her husband luke and her brother nick. Good to see you all. Good to see you guys. This thing came out you guys got married almost two years ago but it just keeps growing. Are you surprised at the longevity this video has . Absolutely shocked. All of america apparently loved to watch me cry. No but its about the amazing gesture and its shocking when it keeps coming back. Its still hard for you to watch the video. I dont watch it. Mom likes to show it a lot and i leave the room. As soon as i hear nicks voice the water works begin. That was a great thing to do. You got in front of a microphone and recorded this and there was a special significance to this song, wasnt there . Yeah, i changed a little bit of the words at the end but the significance was our older sister kristen had actually danced with dad at her wedding years prior. So i had kind of the thought a couple of months prior to try to do Something Special to try to fill the void that was going to be there obviously for her special day. So i wanted to do something for her. And luke, now, two years later, you are expecting. We are. A little natalie. A little natalie. Yea. Good name choice. Thank you. I understand you even have a nickname for her picked out. What is it . Nat stowe. We have a nat mo right here. Nick you need a professional career. After all this, i guess people want it. Well see. The funny thing is is he decided the day before i think to actually go and do it so it was a very last minute kind of thing. So touching. Get you on the voice. Yeah or americas got talent. You can see across the bay area, mostly clear conditions. A little hazy. Over San Francisco and the north bay, a winter spare the air alert has been issued. Keep that in mind. Thank you so much, mike. And well be back at 10 26 with our next local news update. From nbc news, this is today with Kathie Lee Gifford and hoda kotb live from studio 1a in rockefeller plaza. Hello, everybody. Its funday monday, november 25. Its very chilly in new york. We have lots going on. I hope you had a great weekend. If you guys were up late, you may have watched the american movie awards. Were going to give you the highlights. It was quite the show. Should you or can you bring your dog to a thanksgiving dinner at somebody elses house . Is that were going to find out. Were going to find out. Before we get started in exactly 10 seconds, at right now. They did a study that said 10 01 is the time of day that you are the most productive. Its over by 10 02. Its over. The least productive time . 4 00 p. M. On tuesdays. I think its more like 4 00 p. M. On a friday when youre trying to get out of town. What do i know. You watched these last night . The American Music awards. I like them because there is so much theater, so many different outfits. First miley cyrus was coming out and i thought, oh, my god, i cant wait to see what shes wearing. You know what she wore . A suit, you said. A pantsuit. A simple White Versace she had clothes on. She looks so adorable in that. I wish she did that more often. They said, watch out for lady gaga, she wont even make it on the platform, her outfit is so huge. Well, heres what she was doing. She rode in on a horse. Is that because shes the new voice of versace and shes doing her donnatella. People seemed to want to outdo everyone. I think miley cyrus did it because she did her performance with a big cat that appeared to be lip synching. Look at the cats tongue. Keep your eye on it, keep your eye on it. Come on. Anyway, the big winners of the night, taylor swift won four awards including artist of the year, best country album, female country pop artist. I wonder how long she can keep that up, right . Theyre all real talented. Justin timberlake took home three awards, rihanna won the icon award. When pit bull was on stage and he was doing his thing and other artists were performing, everyone in the audience seemed to, when you saw cutaways, seemed disinterested. You want everyone to enjoy the music, and everybody has their own music and theyre not enjoying protecting their own taste and not appreciating other artists . Not everybody can be a hoda woman. Last week when we were out doing the tonight show with jay leno, i stayed a little longer and did my podcast with the amazing carl reiner. To sit with someone like that there he is. Hes 91 years old. I read his book on the way out called i remember me. He remembers everything. Hes sharp as a tack. He came with his manager, george e. Shapiro, and we had the nicest, nicest time, hoda. Im so enjoying the opportunity to talk at length with people. I didnt know what it would be like for him, whether it would be a struggle to remember anything. I could have sat for five hours with the man and he never would have run out of stories. When can we hear that one . Thats going to be downloaded on wednesday. How . You can still listen right now to our darling neil, neil sedaka. And you can get hoda womans. Go to our podcasts. Its so fun, theyre unedited. Its fun. I had dinner with regis and joy saturday night at val bella saturday night, and im sorry for the ruckus he caused, and every table he went to and every Birthday Celebration he destroyed. He sends his love to his koda. Heres one thing i think will anger most women watching our program. Heres the situation. There is a beauty salon in the u. K. That has decided it is going to charge women who wear size 12 or larger more money for leg waxing, okay . They explain that the reason they do that is because there is more leg to wax. So they need to spend more money for more wax. For more wax. Takes longer, apparently. I think thats the most ridiculous thing ive ever heard. Youre not in the leg waxing business. First of all, how are they going to decide who pays more. Toyou have to take off all yr clothes, so maybe they look thats awful think about it. If you buy a house, you have to pay more for square footage. I dont know for a large pizza, you pay more. Not for large pants if you get pants that are size 6 theres a lot more material. Im not saying its right or wrong, theyre saying it costs them more, hoda. It is wrong. That means people who are little get everything. They get the cheaper pants, they get the cheaper leg waxing, they get everything they want, and all the rest of us have to pay more for everything. You can buy a happy meal at mcdonalds. Their littler and you dont have to pay as much, or you can go in the childrens section and buy little clothes that fit you. Im not saying theyre right or wrong theyre browrong. Hoda, have you ever been in business . If it costs you more to do business, you have to amortize to make a profit. It might be rude and uncomfortable, and im sorry for that. Theyre trying to save money and theyre going to lose business. Thats my prediction. If you want your legs waxed and its going to cost you 8 more to get your legs waxed, its like somebody who gets on a plane and has to buy two seats because theyre overweight. I know, but thats what the Airlines Make you do. Im not make ting this stuff up and im not saying its right or wrong. This is what my mom does. She makes her own leg waxing stuff. She takes sugar, water and lemon and stirs it on the pot for a long time, and it gets into this gummy substance. Then you use that and you do your own. I got to tell you, it works. Would she show it on the air . That would be great. Im thinking she could. Its really great. But if your mother happened to gain weight, and she wont because shes a very active woman, she would need more lemon, more sugar, wouldnt she . No, she wouldnt need that much more. You just use the same stuff. You dont need a big blob, you just need its the same i dont do all that stuff, so i just good old razor for me, baby. Yeah. Shave those babies. They say again its the time of year where people are getting sick because its getting cold out. People recommend in a study of german and hospital infection my dad always taught me. There are some guests here today. A young woman shook my hand very nicely, looked me in the eye and said, its nice to meet you. Nothing takes the place of that, hoda, just a little purell afterwards. A woman in the street asked me if i minded taking a picture of her family, and i remembered i watched someone go in the bathroom at the gym yesterday with their phone. So i thought, i wonder if she ever walked into the bathroom with her phone. It got me thinking about germs. Every time somebody hands you your phone and says, can you take a picture for us, that phone has been places and we dont know where its been. Last week when we talked about the intimate things you do in front of your loved one, and half of you said no problem doing any of that stuff, and oe the other half said, are you kidding . We were talking about should you use the restroom with your spouse or boyfriend, should you shut the door or not do it with them in there. 50 said they would use the bathroom but not floss. Just kidding. Look what shirley wrote. I dont close the bathroom door when i go. When youve been married as long as we have, theres no reason to hide anything anymore. Teresa disagrees. You didnt like the mas last night. It was like i ate a bad piece of cheese and i was hallucinating. Yeah. No, it was just kind of weird, but it was entertaining. It was fun. Rock stars behaving badly . No, rock stars doing crazy, crazy performances as usual. What did you think stole it . I like katy perry. Im on team katy. She opened the show with unconditionally, japanese styled version. She just got back from japan, had a long trip there. I just did a cover story and she said she loves japan. Shes not going to get flak, you think . She got a little. I thought it was a ridiculous statement that someone thought this was had some sort of racist overtone. She told me its one of her Favorite Places in the world and the song is one of her favorites on the album. Anyways, i love that. Please, explain the cats and miley cyrus. Why she did that. Honestly so bizarre. Also, her, like, the hemlines, the crotch line, its very disturbing to me. The cat freaks me out. This was, honestly, the peak of my bad cheese moment. I really think this was it. I honestly thought i was the peak of that. The thing is, she does sound amazing. Shes a great singer. Shes a great singer. That cat freaks me out. I dont like cats in general, i dont like them lip syncing and flying in air. Didnt she have a big birthday . Cats involved, too. 21st birthday over the weekend and she instagramed a ton of photos, mostly with her dogs, her in bed. Instead of having there she is, happy birthday, crazy hair. Not showing her birthday suit. Shes not for once. Shes basically sharing all of her animals in bed. Seems like it wasnt so much of a wild birthday. That could have been worse. She could have been in her birthday suit sharing her bed. God knows. The fleet. Exactly, who knows. The fleet. You know, never know. It happens. How about lady gaga. Lady gaga performed last night, rode in on a horse, man horse, i dont know. Robot horse, shes the new face of versace and she actually wore the gown to the amas shes wearing in the ad campaign. You can see shes sort of channelling donatella and janice from the muppets. Yeah, shes the new face of versace and has a song on her new album called donatella. There was something on the papers gaga was splitting from her manager. She and her manager left each other. Supposedly, theres a story in the post it was over art pops creative differences. The article basically said, i think, there werent enough hit songs on her new cd, go back into the studio and finesse it. Its a very different album. I dont personally love it, and i love gaga, but its different. Its darker. Its an odd album. Lets talk about the weekend box office, the hunger games sequel did well. With thanksgiving and hanukkah just days away, we could always use a little refresher when it comes to our holiday manners. Heres someone to answer all your holiday etiquette questions, diane. And we already learned something. Were not supposed to put our napkin on our lap until the hostess does. I didnt know that. Ill put my napkin on my lap. Now you can. Do i bring a hostess gift . Hostess gifts are a big challenge. Thats what i get asked this time of year. I usually bring a bottle of wine or champaishachampagne or. You definitely bring something because it shows youre excited about coming over. But theres a difference between a holiday gift and a host gift around the holidays. What should you not bring . Dont bring chilled bottles of wine. If i bring you a chilled bottle of wine, i want you to serve it. Stinky hand cream or body lotion. When i say smelly, you know that strong stuff that you buy do you like it . If its in a container, you dont smell it, do you . What if i dont like that scent . Youre just kind of thinking ahead a little bit. And flowers. Flowers sound like a great idea until you hand your host some flowers and she has to cut them and put them in a vase, so have them delivered. Be creative. Monogrammed napkins are lovely because youre thinking of the host. Charmin has a question. Whats your question, hon . Heres my question. If i hosted a family dinner for several families with young children, should the children be seated at a kids table, or should they sit together with their parents . I think kids tables are great if theyre done the right way. So if theres only two kids, but them at the main table because then they feel os tra sized or punished. But a kids table should be set up just as beautifully as the adult table. It could be appropriate utensils, and if its fine china, you may not want to put that fine china for the threeyearold kids, but make it fun. Butcher paper, craft paper, let them draw. Crayons in the wine glass. Exactly. Little buckets of crayons. Make sure their food is cut up accordingly. If mom isnt going to be able to jump up back and forth. They have more fun together than they do listening to uncle george talking about his indigestion. Weve been talking about a dog. Say you have a dog and youre going to someones house. Can kathy bring bambino to your house for thanksgiving . If kathie brings bambino, she should call me first. If i dont want bambino because im allergic hes hypoallergenic. I dont want to offend kathie lee, so i might say, could you find someone who could take care of good bambino . Would you go . I like being with him more than most people, so i would probably stay home and eat a dr drumstick. Heres an alternative. Im going to make bambino a home away from home. Im going to make a little bed for bambino. For the most part, just get permission from the host. If youre spending a holiday weekend, its one thing if you cant keep your dog at home. There could be extenuating circumstances. The family could be allergic, a fellow guest might have said dont let bambino come. What about bringing a dish . You want to bring something and you show up with your favorite casserole. Dont show up with your steaming pot of succotash stew and expect them to put it on the table. Youre going to call ahead and ask, do you mind if i bring something . The host might say no because shes planning the menu. A lot of thought might have gone into it. I would be like, thank you very much. She is always gracious and always grateful, too. Its a lovely way to be. Deal with it so you know what, hoda, you would put it on the table because that would be the kind thing to do. You know what the really kind thing to do would be . If you gave us some food, diane. Heres some food and always pass it to the right. You can go to klgandhoda. Com. Only serve the bread from the right . Ive been doing it wrong all this time. Were not telling until next time. For years, jims medicine tied him to a monthly trip to the clinic to get his blood tested. But now, with onceaday xarelto®, jims on the move. Jims doctor recommended xarelto®. Like warfarin, xarelto® is proven effective to reduce afibrelated stroke risk.
