Weve got the two stevens in the studio, as well. Lots to celebrate. Lots to get to this morning. We want to start with todays top story. And that is that weather again. Another winter storm creating a mess for the commute. Leading to a new round of flight cancellations. Nbcs dylan dreyer is in oakland, new jersey, thats about 30 miles to the northwest of manhattan. Dylan, good morning to you. Reporter good morning, matt. I think this house pretty much sums up how were all feeling around here right now. We are in the middle of another round of poorly timed snow. Its a quick mover, but it dumps a decent amount of snow in a short period of time. And that time is right during rush hour. Chicago got slammed just in time for mondays evening rush hour. Anybody that says theyre used to this because they live in chicago is a liar. Ive lived here my whole life. Its horrific every time. Reporter well over 1,000 flights cancelled at chicago airports. Thundersnow at the university of illinois. On interstate 94 in western michigan, a 4mile multicar truck pileup in whiteout conditions. This system, though, we do have winter storm watches and warnings on up as you get into new england along new jersey, up into new england. Storm system, its a quickmover as dylan mentioned, it does push up pretty quickly, the snow is going to intensify in new england on into boston. Snowfall rates 1 to 2 inches per hour. Heres what weve got as far as snowfall accumulations starting in the northeast, about 1 to 4 inches of snow as you get into connecticut. But as you move up into the northeast in new england, were talking some areas, portland, to 9 inches before this is all over. So, guys, we still have to put up with this a little bit longer. Then we do get that warmup. Thats good news. Thanks very much. Lets talk about the drama and injuries caused by severe turbulence on a flight from denver, colorado, to billings, montana. Tom costello covers aviation for us and hes joining us now from washington. Tom, good morning. Hi, matt, good morning. This was united flight 1676 making a midday run from denver to billings. Five people were treated at area hospitals. This morning one remains in critical condition. Very scary flight. Three crew members and a number of passengers are injured. Our focus is assisting employees and passengers who were injured. Our flight staft safety team will review what happened. Thanks very much. Thats scary. Absolutely. Meantime, a breaking story here in sochi. Thats right. Do you remember the two members of a punk band released in december after two years in a russian prison have just been detained here in sochi today. Police say the women, vocal critics of Vladimir Putin were questioned about a theft at the hotel where they were staying. As for the olympic action. And thats your lates3 c3 ahora mas sobre la medalla savannah . Thank you so much. And now more on the historic ice dancing medal. For americans meryl davis and Charlie White. They capped off a flawless competition posting yet another world record in last nights free skate on the way to the top of the podium. And meryl and charlie with us congratulations. Thank you so much. Weve got to get spontaneous applause here. [ cheers and applause ] you came in as gold medal favorites, you are leaving as gold Medal Winners. Do you feel like, we came, we saw, we conquered. The ice dance field was so deep and we knew we had stiff competition, but we feel great. We feel like we came and it was a team event and the individual event we feel like we had skates we wanted to have. You know, there are a lot of athletes that come into the Olympic Games as gold medal favorites, they dont always leave with the medal because the jitters get to them, the moment of the olympics get to them. Were there moments where you were worried . Where the nerves did get to you . We cant help but be nervous. This is the biggest stage, what weve dreamed about, the moment we want to be able to take home and be so proud of. And heading into that, of course youre nervous. But our coach prepared us physically and mentally to make the most out of these olympics. And we were able to come through on the ice and make it count. I guess the flip side of that was, was there any moment last night you were in the final skate where it was just fun and youre thinking we got this . I wouldnt say we got this. Skating is a slippery sport and you never know whats going to happen. We were confident and prepared. There was a deep field, as you said. You have these great competitors in tessa and scott of canada. You have the same coach. You had to be watching all the competitors before you. They turned in great performances, too. Were you thinking weve got to bring our aaaa game . We didnt watch anyone who skated before us. We knew we needed to focus on ourselves. We planned on bringing our a game. This is the first ice dancing gold for the United States. What do you hope it does for the sport . I hope it encouraging people to keep working and keep going for it. The u. S. Has been building over the last several olympic cycles. It is a great time to be an american ice dancer for sure. You guys have been together since you were little kids. We have home video of you skating together. When you look at those images and see those kids on the ice do you think they could have even imagined or dared to dream that you would grow up and be Gold Medalists . We have always lived in the moment. As little kids we had no idea what we were getting into. It wasnt until 2006 until we dreamed at sgeting a chance at olympic gold medal. We have always taken it year by year. I think that is what made it count. Would you say anything to each other as you stepped on or off the ice last night thinking about the journey that you had together . We have been on this journey side by side for 17 years. We are so grateful and thankful for what we have. I dont know if you remember this but when we first met a few months ago i said if you win a gold medal will you play a violin for me . Do you remember that . Vaguely. What if i told you that producers are scrambling looksing for a violin right now . I believe it. Well see if we can turn one up. We got it yes. Well give you a little warmup because we dont want to just spring it on you. We will see you with a little bit of music coming up. Were looking well, 101 northbound here, 680, we expect to see this, its a tuesday, a heavier volume. As we look at the map we remind folks a lot of these School Districts are off so we thought we might see a break. We do have 101 slow but its because of the crash north of there, 101 at 880. Tomorrow, shell fulfill a dream to compete in the olympics. Why she says despite her age, dont count her out. All right. Plus 20 years ago, has it been 20 years since the olympic figure skating competition was overshadowed by the Nancy Kerrigan Tonya Harding controversy. Well, this morning, both women look back at the event that will connect them for good or bad forever. Yeah, mary carillo will bring us that story. Meantime, heres whats making headlines back home. As we said, snow falling yet again from chicago up into new england. The latest storm has led to the cancellation of more than 1,500 flights. Five people were injured on a United Airlines flight when the plane encountered severe turbulence. One passenger said the woman hit the ceiling so hard, the ceiling cracked. And president obama heads to maryland today where he will direct federal agencies to direct higher fuel standards for mediumsized heavy trucks. We will begin this morning with a thrilling moment for the u. S. Bobsled team. Ended americas 62year medal drought in the twoman race when they won the bronze on monday. This is the second medal of holcombs olympic career. And both gentlemen, the stevens as we like to call them are with us. Good morning and congratulations. What is it about the number 62 . Four years ago in vancouver, you broke the gold medal drought for the u. S. In the fourman. 62 years later, you break it here in the twoman. 62s our number. And this weekend were going for the four man, 62 years since we defended the gold medal. Weve got a great you buy a Lottery Ticket with 62. Right. Put everything on 62. Steve, during the run, you knew you were going fast. You crossed the finish line. I saw a lot of fist pumping going on, you knew it instantly. Not the second we crossed the finish line. Takes five or six seconds. And once you saw the dozens of number ones in the air and the tidal wave coming over, we knew we had done it. And steve holcomb, i understand you injured your calf muscle. I did, first day of the second run during the push i strained my calf. And i got out of the sled at the bottom, we grabbed our doctor and went and told him, look, i strained my calf. We had to think if we were going to continue. How much were you depending on him . A lot. We worked till the wee hours of the morning to try to rehab it as best as we could. Ive got the best pusher in the world, i had to hang out, push as hard as i could, hop in try to drive the best i could. Turned out well. You said that driving the twoman is like driving a ferrari. But the fourman is like a greyhound bus. Are you ready to get on the bus . I am, actually. We try to take the lines we learned in the twoman and apply it to the fourman. In the twoman, the fourman you have to be careful, you have to know what youre doing. Were starting to get a hang of this track. And i think we can do well this weekend. Youre getting the hang of it. Congratulations. So proud of you guys. Good luck this weekend. All right. Now, al, you have a little more on this winter misery back home. Not only the knees dealing with it, but the Pacific Northwest is getting hammered again. Take a look, well show you. We are looking for more wet weather coming into the Pacific Northwest, seattle getting dumped again, lots of rain and its going to also in the cascades talk about a lot of snow, as well. Future cast shows it all pushing in. Were going to look as you can see winter storm warnings, avalanche warnings to talk about, big problems, here comes the front bringing the heavy rain. Cools off. A ton of snow. Snowfall amounts up to 2 feet in the cascades. Rainfall from seattle, portland and down into northern california. Up to 2 to 3 inches of we might just get 23 100. I think closer to a quarter in the north bay. That front is going to fall apart before it brings rain south of the Golden Gate Bridge. Well see increasing clouds throughout the day. Thats going to keep temperatures limited in San Francisco. About 61 degrees, closer to 70 with a lot of sunshine coming into the trivalley. East bay region. In the south bay 66 degrees. Well time out that system to your doorstep coming up. And thats your latest weather. Matt . All right, al, thanks very much. As you said a second ago, seems hard to believe, but its been 20 years since that attack on Nancy Kerrigan after a practice session for the 1994 womens u. S. Figure skating championship. The master mind behind it, the exhusband of Tonya Harding. Nbcs olympics correspondent mary carillo sat down with both women for a documentary that will air during the prime time coverage. This was the start of reality television. And then as the details emerged, it became fargo on ice. In this clip, youll see i began by taking both women back to that january day in 1994 that rocked the figure skating world. Just describe for me your day on january 6th, 1994. Which day is that . Thats the day it happened with Nancy Kerrigan. The day . Lets see. I had a session in the afternoon training and went back and i was sleeping when my choreographer came to the door and woke me up and told me what had happened. In detroit today, someone attacked the u. S. Womens figure skating champion Nancy Kerrigan was attacked today. Lets go to the podium and hear from miss kerrigan. The general public looked at womens figure skaters as princesses. When that baton came down, it changed forever the image of figure skating. I dont know if anyone could figure out why someone could do something so vicious. That was my chance to defend my title. I could have been a twotime National Champion to hurt anyone for whatever. I dont know. Yeah. I was mad. Though shed miss nationals, it appeared kerrigan would have a chance to recover in time for the olympics. Three days after the incident, she sat next to harding for a team photo on the detroit ice. It just felt strange, always looking for somebody to run out and do what they did to nancy to other people, including myself. I had people asking me, do you think she had anything to do with it, you know . And my reaction to that was thats ridiculous. To me, this had to have been some random act. Harding would win the u. S. Title qualifying her for the olympics. And she returned to a heros welcome in portland. Im confident coming in here because its my hometown and everything. Even though we have had problems here in portland. But shawn is my body guard, he set up security. But questions about the kerrigan attack continued to dominate the conversation. I dont know anything. I dont know for sure anything about whats going on at all. And of course im going to cooperate. I dont have anything to hide and i want the person to be caught as much as anyone else does. Welcome home, nancy, how do you feel . Fine, thank you. Over the next few weeks, the investigation into the assault continued to dominate the news. But the publics reaction to kerrigans emotional response at the scene soon evolved from horrified concern to sarcastic mockery. Some people said it was whiney, oh, the ice princess is whining. Whining . I wasnt whining i had just been hit with a metal baton by a big, strong person. If youve never been attacked, you have no idea what you would do. Nancy kerrigan does not like talking about that day or the time right afterwards. You get a sense after being with her of how it impacted her life . Thats why shes never talked about it until now, matt. Because she didnt want to be onehalf of that story. She was a National Champion, a bronze medalist and a silver medalist, and yet shes tied to this thing. Im glad she finally talked. And her feelings today about Tonya Harding. Uh tonya maintains shes apologized. Nancy claims theres never been an apology. And to this day tonya has a resistance to admitting anything like that. Its fascinating. It is. It is. Thank you very much. Just a reminder, you can check out marys full story on nbc prime time olympic coverage. And coming up on trending, why jimmy fallon brought up the today show in his first tonight show monologue. And Charlie White vowed to play the violin for us if he won a gold medal. We are back now from sochi with todays olympic start. They have been very good to team usa. Seven medals so far, the most of any nation. And the freestyle skier will try to add one more in the ski halfpipe competition. Jenna bush hager has more on this. Good morning. Good morning. Hes clean cut and married with a 2yearold daughter. But hes coming into the olympics a three times x games champion. You know when its time to drop in, this guys going to bring it. Such a difficult trick, and oh, my. Reporter soaring, getting big air and connecting big tricks. Halfpipe skiing may be less established in the snowboarding counterpart but just as exciting. David white started out as a promising ski racer, but once he got a taste of flying like this, freestyle became his passion even though at the time it seemed like a huge sacrifice. When you gave up downhill skiing, in some ways at the time, you were also giving up a chance to go to the olympics, right . Yeah. When i really started free skiing and doing slopestyle and halfpipe, it was definitely, you know, deciding i like this and not to go to the olympics. So to see it come full circle and getting into the olympics has been an amazing thing. Another Pretty Amazing thing, david says, is that becoming a father has made him a better skier. It really kind of takes the pressure off for me because win, lose or fall, i have my family there. And theyre always going to love me, support me. I can just go out and enjoy it. And when i am enjoying it and when i am, you know, skiing with that mentality, i ski better anyways. David married his wife alexandra in 2011. For an Action Sports star, being married seems so unusual that at first they kept it a secret from the other skiers. Its out of the ordinary to be married and have a little girl. Its kind of a selfish sport where you just ski all the time and do things and go to the parties and you just live that, you know, young money lifestyle. By contrast, davids lifestyle off the slopes is a balance between being a hands on dad and a focused professional athlete. His training not only physical, david prepared by visualizing his different runs over and over even at home in his basement. The ski trip is captured by tv, constant travel is part of the game. Whenever hes on the road, he tries to bring Something Special back to his sweetheart. Every time davids gone, he loves looking for these little heartshaped rocks. And we are happy to have our friend meredith on this. Her last full day in sochi. And not coincidentally, also the day the hotel bar ran out of vodka. Sometimes those things just happen. Its a sign. Youve been here since the Opening Ceremony. You two hosted it together. Of course, it was beautiful. But we do remember that teeny tiny little glitch when that fifth olympic ring would not open. Of course, the russian people dont remember that. No. It was one of the most talked about events on social media. Now organizers want another shot at getting that right. Promising during sundays closing ceremony, the fifth ring will, in fact, cooperate. It will definitely. We have to take a quick pause to talk about this. Its a question thats nagged us since the 70s and 80s. Why, oh, why were abbas costumes so outrageous . Remember all those sequin cat suits, the platform heels, the neon hot pants they wore so well. Well, after 40 years, the bands now finally spilling their wardrobe secrets in a new book called abba the official photo book. Turns out it was all about money, money, money. Under swedish law, costumes were tax deductible, but the costume had to be so loud and flashy they couldnt possibly be worn in everyday life. So they figured the flashier the better. Theyve renamed that the johnny weir law. It was for tax purposes. That takes the fun out of it. Its a good look for them. Not rock n roll. Jimmy fallon made his debut last night as the new host of the tonight show. The show open was directed by spike lee there in new york city. J jimmy saying he was proud to have his show start every night with a spike lee joint. We are proud that in his first monologue, jimmy made room for a little today show classic. Matt lauer and al roker tried doubles luging together. I think that went well. You cant unsee that. Yeah. Actually, that screaming came from the sled. Okay. Maybe that was the only joke. Didnt go so well. The rest of the show was great. The show was spectacular. But were proud to be part of history. The first show. Its big. And thats whats trending today. Todays olympic moment is brought to you by cocacola. Open a coke and enjoy the games. And now two olympic moments for today, the Bright Future of american ice dancing. All eyes may be on meryl and charlie this morning, but two other American Teams lit up the iceberg in mondays free skate. Very attractive, innovative lifts. Madison and evan with sweeping lifts. Look at them. While the brother and sister team danced to Michael Jackson hits. Even navigating a sequin on sequin wardrobe malfunction that left myas tights torn. Theyve had as much fun off the ice as on it posting their videos on their own youtube channel. From peeks behind the scenes to elaborate music videos. Loving every second to goofy sketches. All sprinkled with cameos from fellow team usa skaters. And while they finished eighth and ninth respectively, both pairs head home with plenty of joyful memories as alex tweeted before the competition, the games are a chance to let loose, be free and be happy. You know, we mentioned that for a second in the Opening Ceremony that a lot of the competitors here are not going to medal and they know that coming in. And for them, its all about the olympic experience and they get to mingle with other athletes and have some time and get to see another country. Good for them. Yeah. Great experience. Another story about an athlete to watch here in sochi. An american phenom about to get her moment in the spotlight with tomorrows start of the ladies figure skating competition and meredith has her story. At 15 years old Polina Edmunds is just old enough to be at these games. Its a name you wont forget after tomorrow. They showed me and it just said congratulations youve been nominated to the 2014 olympic team. 15yearold Polina Edmunds shocked the world by securing the third spot on the olympic figure skating team. One of the largest ovations of the night. It was nice to come in as kind of the underdog and having nothing to lose. It was her first ever senior event. When i got to nationals, i knew that i was just as strong as everybody else. And i just put it out there on the ice and im glad that the judges recognized that. Polina. Polina first stepped on to the ice at 2 years old. Her balance so impressive that her mom, nina, decided to start training her. For two years, my mom just tried to teach me a little bit, like wiggles and stuff on the ice. By 11, polina was competing, the Olympic Rings always a glimmer in the distance. Whenever i was little, she would always tell me i could be a great skater. And we always had the dream together to go to the olympics. With each year, polinas skating got stronger. Her glides more grateful and her skills more difficult. Triple toe. Pure technique. Today, the reigning junior champion has mastered some of the most technical combinations. I think the triple triple combinations make me stand out as a skater because theyre difficult to do. And only the top ladies in the world are doing them. 9x. Age is also not a concern for this High School Sophomore. I always just think back to some of my inspirations like tera lipinski because she was 15 years old when she went to the olympics and sara hughes. Gaby douglas, the gymnast was also 16 and she won the gold medal and i know that anything is truly possible. Tomorrow night, she will take the olympic ice ready to make her impression on the world. And this is a homecoming of sorts for polina and her family. Her mom nina is from russia. So you are leaving tomorrow, right . Yes. Im leaving, im leaving. Youve been here 2 1 2 weeks, we came on the same day. Give me your thoughts. You carried my bags very well. You know, its so funny because prior to coming here, i dont know if you all were anxious, but i had a lot of reservations. And im so glad now in ret retrospect we had a chance to experience this. Obviously the games are exciting and we were all together for the usa russia hockey game, that match on saturday. I dont know if you can ever top that. That was great. But for me, a lot of it i did get outside this ring and got to meet a lot of people in sochi and up in the mountains and the people there were fabulous, they really are. And you take the politics away. And people are people. And i just that for me was the best part of this whole experience. Theyve done a great job. Its actually worth giving a shoutout because this whole area has so far pulled off a wonderful game. They sure have. They sure have. You mentioned usa russia hockey game. During one of the most tense times in the game, 22, third period, anything could happen. You left your seat to go chase down the polar bear outside. Yes. Because i thought, i bet thats where bob costas has been hiding. Oh, wow. Sure enough, it wasnt him. Well, al also took the picture with the polar bear. Admit. Once you started once you open the door, we all walked through. What are you taking home as a souvenir . That polar bear, actually. Exactly. Yeah. Opening ceremony, though, that was fun. And i have to say, we sat through a couple of rehearsals together. It was cold up there. But by the time the actual night came around, we kind of just were mesmerized by what we were seeing until that one moment where you forgot to flip the switch on the fifth ring, Everything Else was great. I didnt know it was my responsibility. Well, safe travels. Youre doing a fabulous job. Tara lipinski and johnny weir break down the outfits from last nights finale. More stunning photos from the games. Good morning to you. It is 8 26, im laura garciacannon. Investigators are searching the home of a suspect that was shot and killed by sheriffs deputies overnight. What happened when i crashed Sports Illustrateds legend shoot as they celebrated 50 years of the issue. But first, we show you the first ever nbc anchor olympics monday. This morning, we can finally reveal the results. Lets bring in our lesser representatives of team sporting, tara lipinski, johnny weir and apolo ono. It ended in a tie, but the viewers have spoken. More than 10,000 of them voted, and i have the envelope here, and the coveted golden microphone prize. Why are you holding it with two hands . Because its about to fall apart. Are you ready . Yep. And for decades, the russian movies and novels centered on the cold war and spies. We sent keir simmons to the heart of the russian intelligence agency. What did you find there . Thats right, matt. This is about spying, but also about russianamerican rivalry. Youve seen it here in the medal count. But its a rivalry that goes way back. When the u. S. And russia faced off in a cold war that was often fought through spying and in fiction, a certain british spy got involved, too. Reporter the name, simmons, keir simmons. A city of spies and secrets. At least thats how we thought of moscow a few years ago. Get in, mr. Simmons. Reporter giving me the tour, security expert andre this building, the central one is the main headquarters of the kgb. The kremlin is also a fortress. Reporter in the bond movies, theres always a man in the kremlin on the end of a phone. Yes, of course, well send our best agent in immediately. Reporter real russian agents like allegedly ana chapman have even been discovered in the heart of america. But the year that inspired a thousand spy thrillers was a frightening time. There was the threat of nuclear destruction. Russia and america locked in a cold war divided by a socalled iron curtain. And for westerner russia, the soviet union was full of mysterious places. You know, you can really imagine spies meeting here. Kgb decided what interest kgb. Reporter a country controlled by the kgb and the russians made their own spy movie, bestselling thriller writer knows all about the trade craft of spying. He experienced firsthand the chilly atmosphere of cold war moscow. You can see the guys in the gray coats coming out behind you. You will follow it all the way. The hotel room was bugged. You knew this thing the size of a bumblebee was in the telephone. Yes. The gadgets used by both sides. Something hidden inside a shoe there. Its a weapon. A weapon like a lipstick. It was discovered by the kgb, by the National Security agency. Only a few years back, the russians accused the british of hiding listening devices in a plastic rock. And last year, an alleged cia agent was caught in the city disguised in a wig. Technology is more advanced. Look at the nsa. But how much really has changed . Not a lot. Not a lot. Russian and america are still spying on each other. Yep. There are still code names, midnight rendezvouses and glamorous agents prepared to use anything, even love. Or secrets. Reporter and that report is very likely putting me at the top of the russian intelligence agencys list of targets. So theyre probably going through my emails as we speak. Thank you very much for that assignment, matt. When you walk by the mini bar in your room, speak loudly, all right. Youll be fine. Thank you very much. We appreciate it. Up next, the chance of a lifetime. Willie gets to hang out with the legendary women of the Sports Illustrated swimsuit issue on this, his wifes birthday. But first, this is today on nbc. This, his wifes birthday. But first, this is today on nbc. Snow still falling at 30 rock. Welcome back to sochi as we enjoy the olympic winter games. The folks at Sports Illustrated want you to think about summer, specifically the 50th anniversary of the swimsuit issue out today. And willies got more on that. That said. The magazine Sports Illustrated just to name a few. To celebrate, the magazine reunited some of those legendary cover models. And for some reason, they invited me. Excuse me, sir, ive got the Golden Ticket. Whats going on here . A secret . Once inside model mecca, my mission was to join the club and take a closeup with 22 of the biggest names in swimsuit history. Who is your favorite Sports Illustrated swimsuit model . Im standing with her right now. Was i ready . Did i have what it takes . If only there were a few dozen experts around to give some advice. More rouge, you think . Yeah. More color . More sexiness . This isnt working for you yet . Its working. Its working. First things first. Learning the walk from petra nemkova. So youre going to glide. Like you mean it. Yeah. Not that. Every supermodel needs a signature pose. So kate upton shared her secrets with me. I always have a goto pose. Like the hand on the hip and up by my face. Yeah, right. Little push. What is the hand . What does that add . I dont know. Its me. Its just for you, you could do a throwback like this. Like youre pushing your hair back. Okay. With the hand on the waist . Yeah, always. Yes boom. Killed it. Got it. Geist upton out. What. But before we took the picture, i needed to understand what it meant to be a legend. A legend is someone who goes off the beaten path and makes their own way. Aspirational, stood the test of time. Gamechanger. Somebody who pushes in the mind and body. Someone who has left an indelible, lasting impression. A person whose accomplishments are so amazing, the path would stand on its own. Despite meeting absolutely none of those criteria, i was ready for the big moment. Even with the great photographer on the camera, i opted for a selfie. Maybe its best to leave it to the professionals. Obviously my selfies dont do any of those ladies justice. Heres a look at the actual photograph. How about this for an allstar lineup of the alltime cover models over 50 years of Sports Illustrated magazine. Really cool. Wake up, willie, it was all just a dream. Wake up with her next to you. Yeah. So did you learn anything . What is your one takeaway moment of all of that . I should not have been there. I had no business being in that room. I should have been home with my wife and children. You learned a good pose, though, can you do that again . That cat thing . No, i dont think thats it. What was that . Thats the cat look. Thats not good. Hairball. What do you have coming up next hour . What do we got . Were talking lolo jones. Interview with lolo jones and the results from today, as well. Charlie and meryl joining us with their parents. And i also had a snowboarding lesson over the weekend with davis. Before your local news, members of team usa reveal their superstitions. Olympic news here in sochi to tell you about. In a few minutes, well talk to gold medal winning ice dancers meryl davis and Charlie White. Hes already played the fiddle. What else can the man do . Hes given us everything on the show this morning. Talk about super talented. They were perfection last night. They were. They didnt just win gold, they killed it, killed gold. They were amazing. What did they do . They crushed it. They set a world record. Their 4minute routine won by nearly five points. Their score was 195. 92. What an incredible night on the ice for them. And by the way, their parents, in just a couple of minutes. Meanwhile, an unexpected bronze in the mens snowboard cross. A great story, a guy four years ago was the technician for the olympic snowboard team. He was, you know now he wins a medal here four years later. And he will join us tomorrow. Cant wait. I was watching that race this morning, it is so frightening to see them in action. Theyre flying down the mountain. Theyre knocking each other out. Its almost like snowboard racing. Its like, you know, car racing, at the same time, boxing matches are knocking people down. Kind of like roller derby. And they lose a few people on the way down. They certainly do. If you get caught behind one. They get up. Yeah. We do Something Like that on our show. We would lose. Seems like we wouldve led with that. Meanwhile, alpine ski racer mikaela shiffrin, the 18yearold made her debut at the olympics today, finished fifth in the womens giant slalom. Not too bad considering thats not necessarily her event. The slalom is where her strength is. How about the steves . Got the bronze in twoman bobsledding. The United States first twoman medal since 1952. Wow. Breaking that 62year drought in that event there. Now the medal count, get this, guys, the u. S. And russia tied, 19 medals each. Talk about a cold war there, right . And norway 18, netherlands 17 medals. I love it youve got two of the biggest countries and then two of the smallest all bunched together like that. This is the olympics. Norway finding their way at these winter olympics. Obviously now a lot of you have heard by now, 20 years since 1994, the ice skating scandal that made headlines around the world on january 6th, 1994 before the olympics. Nancy kerrigan was hit in the lower leg by a batonwielding attacker, later revealed the attackerhired by the exhusband of her rival Tonya Harding. Theres a big documentary coming on sunday night about nancy and tonya. And i got a chance to sit down with her for a few minutes yesterday. You sound like somebody who has moved on and moved on a long time ago from this. Would you say youve forgiven her . I dont know. I mean i dont think about it really. I mean, when i read transcripts with the fbi, they planned to kill me at one point. That was one of the options to kill me over a sporting event. What. Its crazy. And there were all these other brutal options they were thinking about doing to me. So i dont i mean i dont know if like you said, ive moved on. I dont know if i think forgiveness. I hope shes happy. I understand she has a child of her own and husband, and i hope she can be happy and be able to move on. I have to say, she was incredibly gracious. You can tell shes still not comfortable talking about it. But she has moved on. Nancy kerrigan is married, three kids of her own. She says, im trying to get kids to gymnastics and dinner done, not sitting around thinking about Tonya Harding. But she is talking about it now. That full piece 7 00 p. M. Sunday night on nbc before the closing ceremony. Dont want to miss that. Now to an extraordinary performance for a pair of skaters who have been together nearly 17 years. Meryl davis and Charlie White did something the americans have never done in any winter olympics. Theyve won the first ever gold medal for team usa in ice dancing. They did. Meryl and charlie are here with us. Come on in, guys. Hey, guys. Along with paul davis, charlies mother jackie white. Hello, congratulations. So exciting to have you all here. We all know how much the parents have a lot to do with your success, as well. But as i was watching the competition last night, i just kept thinking to myself, as each of the pairs went out and scores kept Getting Better and better and better. And then when the russians skated and the crowd went wild. The pressure you all must have felt. What was that moment like for you . What were you feeling as you got out there . Certainly theres a lot of pressure, but charlie and i wanted to go out and see the programs weve been training at home. And the energy of the crowd, while they certainly were supporting their russian skaters was really positive energy. I think that olympic spirit was really in the building. And i want to talk to the parents for a minute. You have watched these two since they were 8 and 9 years old. They were little kids. Im thinking, i have a 6yearold, its like watching your daughter do something at this age and now on the biggest stage in the world, being the best in the world. What has this journey been like for you . Emotional. Yeah. An emotional journey. It didnt seem quite as emotional until more recently. Pretty intensely emotional lately. Yeah. I think its been a wonderful journey. Paul, same for you . Its been a privilege to be part of, honestly. Jackie and i were at their first lesson together. We had no idea what it was going to turn into. Then we watched over time their talent grow and be nurtured by their coaches. And we just had to stick with it and see where it went. We had no idea we would end up here until the kids were about 14 or 15. And we said, are you sure you want to do this . I tried to talk meryl into becoming a skier. And she said too late, dad. Good call, by the way. Yeah. Worked out pretty well. Charlie, do you when youre out there and youre in the midst of this routine, is there a point where you kind of forget about the competition and youre just enjoying yourself . Because it looked like you were having fun. Absolutely. And, you know, part of that is being welltrained. You know, and we have our parents to thank but also our coach who, you know, prepared us for this moment, who prepared us to be able to go out on olympic ice and not just skate to the best of our ability but also to be able to enjoy the olympic moment. And finishing the program and feeling the pride was such an amazing feeling for both of us to share that together. I know you guys are in the now for right now. Are you already thinking ahead . Future and four years from now . No. We havent even processed yesterday. To me it is still yesterday. It was 12 hours ago. We want more. We want more of them. We only slept two hours, were not ready to talk four years. By the way. We heard your talent earlier where you played the violin. I have to tell everybody, before you came out and did that you said i think all i can remember is a, b, c. And then the light goes on and concerto violinist. Does meryl have a secret talent we dont know about . She speaks russian, right . Italian. Her italian is bene . I wouldnt say bene. Good enough for us. Well, it was such a thrill to watch you. Congratulations and congratulations to you, as well. Its such a joy. Thank you very much. So proud of you all. Proud of you. And by the way, well see you back in new york next week. I understand youre going to skate for us on rockefeller plaza. Well make sure the rink is ready for you. Youll be playing with the new york philharmonic. Thanks, guys. Thank you. How about some weather . Lets show you what weve got going on. And boy, another storm system. Right now pushing its way into new england. Boston, well be looking at snow later this evening. The good news is, its going to be a quickmoving system. We do have winter storm watches, winter storm warnings up mostly in new england. Some in western pennsylvania. But as this low pressure makes its way up the coast, it is going to intensify. Afternoon commute going to be rough for our friends in new england. Snowfall rates 1 to 2 inches per hour. The good news is, thats all were going to get. Although some folks up into Northern New England like portland, they could see 9 inches, boston, though about 4. 9 13 now on a Tuesday Morning. The clouds are thickenning up. We have low pressure slated to bring a low pressure. We will see limited sunshine as clouds filter in. 51 right now in the peninsula b with temperatures going to climb nicely. Were headed towards a warm up. Were talking about a return of the 07s. No stranger to the olympic spotlight and no stranger to controversy. Reporter this is lolo jones in summer. This is lolo jones in winter. Jones is one in a group of world class track and field stars hoping to push the United States to a gold medal in bobsled. How did you come from the track to the icy track . I actually was being recruited at the time. And she was like, i think youd make a good bobsledder. And i was like, no. I laughed at her, actually. Because, you know, obviously i was training for summer olympics at that time. And it was just like the seed she planted. There has been a bit of controversy about jones selection to the team. With some, including american bobsledders saying lolo landed her spot because of fame and not skill. Her teammates reject that. Do you think she deserves to be on the team . Without a doubt. I think one of the things people dont realize is lolos first cup race, she got a silver medal. Shes dedicated everything she has to this. Its a testament to how hard shes worked and how great an athlete she is. After some very high profile disappointment at summer games past, jones is happy to give up the lonely life of a sprinter to become a team player. You said joining this team was like a fresh start for you. What did you mean when you said that . For track and field you can become very like just everythings about you. In some ways, you are vain at times, you have to do that in track. If you dont, that could jeopardize you and you could be last. But in bobsled, its a unit, putting myself last and pushing the drivers up. My job is to humble myself and lift them up. And you can just see, guys, watching lolo jones with her teammates, she loves being in a team sport because track, so much of the controversy was looking at her, she felt like a lightning rod. Here she can be with her friends and chill out a little bit. Shes doing great. The womens bobsled action starts today in sochi. Its a Great Organization that donates colorful hats to heads and hearts of kids with cancer. Reporter every superhero needs a helmet. I love your melon, so does he. They have made it their mission to give one to every sick child they meet. Love your melon, like your head. The College Students founded a nonprofit hat Company Called love your melon. Love your melon means embracing everything you have, whether its a bald head or full head of hair, it means loving what youve got and embracing everybody around you. For every hat sold, another hat is given to a child with cancer. Its almost like the hat is an icebreaker for us. And the hat provides a chance for us to actually get to know the kids. Bringing a colorful, bright hat into the hospital room, it lights up the room. It does that physical aspect of warming up their head. When youre in a chilly room, it covers them with warmth and it surrounds them with love. 12yearold ritchie when he was finishing up chemotherapy last year. Although he was fighting for his life, he was worried about what was on his head. When i first saw my hair falling out, i thought that my friends wouldnt like me being bald, but that hat if youre different or anything sets you apart, that sets you up, i think, to be bullied. And i was afraid he would be teased at school. And that would just break my heart. Made me feel warm during the winter and made sure i dont get teased at school. The Company Started less than two years ago at the university of st. Thomas in st. Paul, minnesota. After the duo teamed up on a project for their entrepreneurship class. I had a couple people close to me pass away because of cancer. Its hard to justify why a 7yearold has cancer and why they have to go through what theyre going through. And so we wanted to be able to reach out and do anything we could for these kids. The love your Melon Mission has expanded to include helicopter cloud ride to give kids a break from the hospital. One of the most difficult might be knowing the right way to talk to your kids about the tough stuff. Here with advice are logan lefkoff and dr. Jennifer wider, authors of the new book got teens, the guide to sexuality, social media and other adolescent realities. Hello, you two. Hi there. Youve been through this yourselves personally . Were in the process of it. We have five kids between the two us. And i think were realists. There is certain inevitables. Theyre going to go through puberty, theyre going to want independence and theyll want to experiment. It is our job to teach them how to minimize the risks that come with that. Here is a question from one person. My daughter thinks it is okay to borrow medication if a Family Member or a friend has a prescription for it because its not an illegal drug. Why is, you know, you want to explain why . Absolutely. We put this in the book because it is a real issue. It is an increase among middle school students, among High School Students of looking in the medicine cabinet and taking out whats there. The issue is a lot of kids dont think that it is a problem because it is illegal. So it is accessible, in the medicine cabinet and parents are using it also. So, you know, it comes with a lot of risk, prescription drugs. What if your kids say to you, mom, did you drink in high school or when did you have your first drink . It is a really good question. It may not be the same as you would answer about sex or other issues. I think it has been important to be honest, and find out why theyre asking. Are they looking to justify their own behavior, do they have questions . It is always in our best interest to model healthy drinking for them. If your kid sees you blacked out, not a great thing. If youre teaching them how to enjoy a glass of wine at a meal, it is part of an overall culinary culture, thats a much better method. We have a big issue today with marijuana being legalized in several states. So how would you say to a teenager, if they should or should not try marijuana . I think marijuana is a tricky subject. It is, you know, in the news, seeing it all the time. We cant guard our kids from the headlines. We hear about medicinal marijuana. What do you say to the kids . You sayed me dism ed me dime helps with certain things. An adolescent brain is not developed the way an adults is. It is a different discussion for you as a young person than it is for an adult. An important one to have and a great cultural one. And if your daughters friend is talking about it, pretend she says, look, i heard marijuana is less toxic than cigarettes, and your daughter is not participating but shes around it, should you address the subject then too . I think the issue is if you look at stuff like your child is playing with a lighter or with matches, those are dangerous. You wouldnt want them to play with either. So you have to teach your kids responsible behavior around alcohol, marijuana, sex. Doesnt matter what the issue is. A lot of people say theyre learning all of that in school. They get sex education, all that isnt it the parents responsibility . It is as a sexuality educator myself, it is certainly a parents responsibility to teach values and to talk to your kid about what your boundaries are. At the end of the day, kids are going to push the envelope. You want that key moment to think, what did my parents tell me again what would they be okay with. When do you start having conversations, at what age . Every kid is different, right . You got to know your child before you know what theyre ready for . Absolutely. We talk about refraining the sex talk in our book. We want it to be a continuum. It is something that can start really early. You have to know your kids. The more education you give them, the more you empower them, the better off they make a decision. I found putting giving them baths when theyre little, theyre in prison. I would sit there with them and they couldnt get out. They have to talk. I think the key to this is i think the key to this is always we keep the door open and were not judgmental. Kids come to us. Got to model it. Thats where ive gone wrong. Thanks, ladies. Need to cut down the party list, we called in a pro to help you do it with grace. And Elaine Stritch is here. Shes unbelievable. Thank goodness for anna post, the coauthor of emily posts wedding etiquette here to tell you how to slim down that list but do it gracefully. Is it possible to do it gracefully . It is. Absolutely. First off, dont raise expectations. When youre first engaged, youre so excited, you want to tell everybody. Of course were going to do it here, of course shell come. Just hold back on that. Once it is out there, you cant take it. Cant take it back. Yeah. Thats hard. Lets do some questions from some people who have written lets do it, hodi. Melanie wants to know what is the ratio for invites sent and rsvps . How many you to think will decline . My research came up with different numbers, 10 to 20 . For a general party it comes out about the same, the bigger it gets can kind of change it a little bit or the more people people are expecting it. You have a good idea about sending out the alisters, so the ones you really want, ahead of time to give you time to see who says no, so you can then invite some others that might be on the maybe list. Sure. Some couples just, you know, they cant get everybody on the first list, but, hey, if somebody rsvps no, lets get everybody we love there. Count back a little further so your alist goes out, they can rsvp, if you have a blist, they have time to get the invite and get the rsvp in without knowing. What if your guest brings a plus one without telling you or calls up and says, hey, would you mind my so and so is in town, can i bring them along . Im a big fan of being inclusive. If it is day of, say hello, nice to see you, and get that off your plate. This is your big day. But, you remember that, i dont usually invite someone a second time. It is just rude. You can chat with them about it later. Dont try to have it out with them explaining how rude it is that day. You dont want to get into that. Let me ask you this. What was it . Shoot, let me think about it. While youre thinking about it. Smaller events are often even stickier because maybe you have eight people around a table and somebody gets left out. Right. So if it is a family event, you know, or even a small party, think about cutting by groups, you know, maybe the second cousins, the distant cousins, the neighbors, cutting by groups can sometimes your work colleagues. That can help keep it from feeling personal to anybody within any one of those it is not you. All the work people. I remember, when people are asked to rsvp, and you say, by a certain date, if you havent heard from that person, is it okay to call them and say, listen, we need to know, it is a sit down thing, im sorry to put you but we need to know, can you let me know . Absolutely. If it is for a wedding or any event, if you know you are have to do your shopping, set your rsvp date a week out from that so you have your week of buffer time to get on the phone and call people and say, i need a final number by friday, hope you can make it, thanks. Thats why people get wedding planners and things. It is an incredible amount of work. Thank you very, very much. Good to see you. A woman who needs no invitation, she can come by any time and visit Elaine Stritch, she has a funny take on her years in the spotlight. Amazing documentary. This is today on nbc. Right. All you hear is that and when you heard they wanted to make a documentary about you, what is the first thing you thought . I thought i got to go through that again. Yeah. Not first time, is it . No, i i talked pretty openly, and i dont care. I think talking and telling the truth is a lot of fun. And its important, too . If you dont, it stays inside you and festers and you never live to the ripe old age of 89. Thats right. And you get the clock goes [ beeping ] cant stop it. Cant stop it. Let me tell you one line okay. That i tried to end the documentary. Okay. With this line. And the guy is doing the publicity and all that jazz said, trust me, elaine, youll get a chance to say that line on television. Okay. And should we bleep it . It is a good line. People who do comedy, it is like food and drink to them. If they think of a funny line, and it just came right off the top of their head. Okay, all right. Can you say it, because. Thank you, jesus. Thank you, jesus. Thats how i end every day. But wait a minute. We have ten seconds, elaine. Youre not getting the last line in this mornings show. And goodbye. I did.
