Meryl davis and Charlie White take to our rink here in Rockefeller Center only on today, wednesday, february 26th, 2014. Announcer from nbc news this is today with matt lauer and Savannah Guthrie live from studio 1a in rockefeller plaza. And good morning. Welcome to today on the west coast at 7 00 a. M. And as unusual as it sounds, it is snowing. The plaza cam. Not sticking too much. But snowing well. Meantime out west, we have a rain. This is a doubleedged sword. The areas are so dry, they will not absorb. They are worried about mudslides and threehour delays at San Franciscos airport. It will be a mess. We have an interesting story coming up. Do you worry about your underage son or daughter getting their hands on alcohol . Using hidden cameras, jeff rossen found it can be as easy as asking an adult to buy them alcohol. His report is coming up in a little while. We want to get to the top story. Critics lining up about the bill in arizona to refuse service to gays. The decision to veto or not. The decision is in the hands of governor jan brewer. Nbcs mike taibbi is in phoenix. Good morning, mike. Reporter good morning, savannah. Governor brewer has until the end of the week to make the decision. The pressure is mounting to kill the bill at the very least has reignited the culture wars. To the devout christians, the bill triggered daily protests is nothing to do with religious freedom. I have a right to refuse to serve you for whatever particular reason. Reporter what if the reason is the customer is gay like the samesex couples refused wedding flowers in Washington State or wedding cake in oregon. By show of hands, how many think thats okay . To refuse . Yeah. Absolutely. Reporter but a lot of Business Owners have been doing the math. Like the hotel owner ben bethel who emphasizes he serves everyone but has already heard about possible cancellations. 12,000 to 14,000 of lost revenue to the hotel. And that itself results in almost 2,000 in local and state sales tax revenues lost. Estimates are its not thousands but untold millions at stake if the bill becomes law and triggers corporate and tourist flight especially lgbt. This is a proposal that will send tourists away and their dollars. Reporter thats why Companies Like apple and American Airlines are urging a veto like john mccain and mitt romney and even state republican senators including steve pierce who supported and voted for the bill and have now changed their minds. We made a mistake and now weve got to fix it. Overnight, governor brewer tweeted, i assure you as always, ill do the right thing for the state of arizona. If governor brewer does veto the bill, conservative talkers like Rush Limbaugh say they know who is to blame. Youre being bullied by the homosexual lobby in arizona and elsewhere. Many of those in this church agree. Where does it stop . Reporter now its up to the governor. Now, the governor has been careful to not tip her hand. But one of her aides was quoted yesterday as saying this bill was never part of her agenda. Another hint that a veto is likely. Savannah. Mike, thank you. Nicole wallace is a republican strategist who worked in the white house during the bush administration. Nicole, nice to see you. Good morning. Good morning. Lets look at this in both ways. Lets say she decides not to veto this bill. Business owners in arizona can decide not to provide service to or employment to people based on their sexual orientation. Whats the Immediate Impact . I dont think thats what shes going to do. But i think it took a long time last night to even find out and discover who was originally behind this. Because even the republicans in the Arizona State legislature who had voted for this measure have now reversed themselves. After seeing the way its been received as discriminatory. When that wasnt the original intent. Thats not how its been understood by people of arizona. Thats why you see people who supported it urging her to veto it. Lets say she does veto it, and keep in mind, this did have support at one time in arizona. Not too long ago. Passed both houses of the state legislature. If she does veto it, shes got cover, by the way, economic cover. Whats the impact . Well, i think she will be viewed as having listened to not just the people of arizona who are now protesting in pretty large numbers, but in maybe sending a message to people who want to fight for religious liberties, which, again, is a noble cause those measures need to be more targeted and cannot send the message that arizonas going to discriminate against any group of people. You say its a noble cause. But the bill itself does force the question, do the religious freedoms of one group trump the right not to be discriminated against for another group . How do you answer that question . No doubt, in this case, they did not strike the right balance. But i think that we have to be careful not to paint this with too broad of brush. Because i think the specific effort of trying to protect religious freedoms protecting anybodys personal belief system and not forcing them to do something that violates that. But in this case, no doubt, youve got republicans saying i hear you and understanding that the consequences of measures like this are so grave, not just for our party, but for our country to be viewed as not tolerating any group of people. And since you cant take politics out of any issue these days coming up to a midterm election. If this bill becomes the law, whats the impact on the Republican Party . Well, again, i dont think its going to. I think shes going to veto it. But i think republicans are saying, i hear you, i understand the problems weve had in recent elections and were not going to get painted with this brush that we discriminate against any group of people. Gay americans or any other. I think its also important to listen to businesses. Youve got the super bowl threatening to relocate and move away from arizona. Youve got apple, an employer in that state, very wary. So i think if she vetoes it, its a sign shes listening not just to the people in her state but the employers in her state. Thanks very much. Thanks. We are following two big weather stories. Bonechilling the cold here in the east and in the west, officials in california are preparing for storms. A good news bad news situation, al. Look at this. They are getting ready for sand bagging in southern california. It has been so dry, any water that comes in a real quick time is going to cause flooding. The windchill as you know as you mentioned 13 degrees below zero. It is very cold, but millions of people are waking up to absolutely freezing cold temperatures. The arctic air is blasting much of the country. Most of the winter, i have spent outdoors in the cold. I took it to a new extreme yesterday as i finally tried to embrace it. Reporter winter 2014 just wont quit. I have never ever seen roads this bad. Reporter in minnesota, commuter chaos caused by spinouts. Throughout the midwest, the problem is ice jams and potential for serious flooding once winter loosens its grip. In northwest is ohio, dozens of rivers flooded with ice. It benefits Special Olympics chicago. And our own jimmy fallon has agreed to take the plunge. On sunday morning, its going to be about 15 degrees. The water temperature, a balmy 30 degrees. It almost looks nice to jump into, right, guys . No. No. Tell her about dylan, thank you. Natalie has tough talk from the president when it comes to troops overseas. President obama is drawing the line with afghanistan telling President Hamid karzai sign an agreement to ensure the safety of any remaining u. S. Troops or all of them are coming home by the end of the year. Nbcs Jim Miklaszewski has the story from kabul. Reporter natalie, general dempsey will be meeting here today at bagram air base. And clearly, theyre going to talk about president obamas order to come up with plans to pull all American Forces out of afghanistan by the end of this year. Now, general dempsey told us that he could not in good conscience order u. S. Men and women into afghanistan if there was no bilateral Security Agreement that would protect them. General dempsey worries, though, that al qaeda is still alive and active here in afghanistan. And hes concerned that if the u. S. Leaves, theyll be leaving that part of the job undone. And while general dempsey would clearly like to keep a small, residual American Force here in afghanistan, there is indeed a growing sentiment among some u. S. Military officials both here in afghanistan and back in washington, that now may be the best time ever for the u. S. To pick up and pull out of afghanistan. Jim in kabul, thank you. Inside court, the 54yearold Kerry Kennedy, the exwife of governor cuomo, said she was driving without knowing she took a sleeping pill. Police say she side swiped a tractor trailer and kept driving. Officers found her slumped over a wheel of her car in her gym parking lot. Kennedy long maintained her innocence. I remember getting on the highway and i have no memory until i was stopped at a traffic light and a Police Officer was at my car door. Reporter kennedys lawyers argue that although she did take the generic form of ambien, it was accidental. On the stand, toxicologist elizabeth spratt, it could take two hours with her height and weight to take effect. If convicted, she could face a year in jail and a fine and suspended license. For today, katy tur, nbc news, new york. Well, lisa blume is author of a new book, suspicion nation, lisa. Good morning. Good morning. Well talk about the book in a moment. But i want to ask you about this Kerry Kennedy trial. Interesting set of facts. And everyone agrees she took ambien and got behind the wheel. But she says it was an accident. Well, the law assumes we intend the logical consequences of our actions, but shes going to say it was a mistake, and i dont know if they have any witnesses to counter that. Do you think its a good idea to take the stand . Its always tricky. Does she have a choice . Absolutely. Shes going to say theres a similar pill, a thyroid pill, and it was an error on her part. Do you think that the prosecutors have gone too far by taking this to trial . Its a misdemeanor case. Theres not jail time at issue. Are you surprised were all the way to a trial . Yes, and you would expect this to result into a simple plea bargain, instead, we have a fullblown trial. We have people on the stand talking about her character, her humanitarian work, her mother ethel kennedy, 85 years old, coming to the courtroom with her. Does this kind of evidence sway jurors . I think so. The argument is she was a humanitarian, shed never do anything to intentionally harm another person. Her lifes work has been to help other people. Well see how it turns out. Lets talk about the book. Its out today, suspicion nation. Its a close examination of the trial of george zimmerman. Ultimately, what do you conclude about it having looked so closely at the case . I was so disturbed looking at this case daytoday. I couldnt put it behind me. I had to do my own investigation and tell the story inside the jury room with a new examination of what went on there. I told the story about witnesses who were not prepared and terrible mistakes made by the state of florida prosecuting this case. I think it was a travesty of justice. You are very tough on the prosecutors in the book. Whats your ultimate conclusion about them . They were illprepared, bungled the case . Their heart wasnt in it . What are you concluding here . Well, i have the top six errors made by the prosecution. I lead it to the readers whether this was intentional or carelessness. I think the prosecutors made many of the mistakes we all make. That is racial profiling, an assumption about Trayvon Martin based upon his skin color. I think the issue of race was really fumbled by the state of florida and everybody in that courtroom. This case was mishandled. And we saw it again in the michael dunn case. Well, lisa, the book is out today, suspicion nation, you look closely at the trial transcripts. Thank you very much. Appreciate it. Thank you. Lets take a turn and get a check of the weather from al. Todays weather is brought to you by the new windows. One experience for everything in your life. Well, we have been experiencing one rough winter, but depending on where you are, maybe not so bad. In fact, right now, we are looking at snow from washington, d. C. All the way up into new york now, philadelphia with a quick hit. You will have snow this morning and clearing this afternoon. Look for clear and cold conditions later on tonight. Now, as we move ahead, this is kind of interesting. Where the jet stream bubbled up to the north, look at this, so far, compared to average for february from silver city to reno, nevada, temperatures everywhere from 6 to 8 degrees above average. Then you come to the east where the jet stream has been way to the south, were talking anywhere from 6 to 10 degrees below average. And in a place like chicago, it has been misery. Average temperature for the winter, 19. 1. So far in the top five coldest winters. And guess what, weve got about six days in a row of below zero temperatures coming. Its going to move up. And snowfall wise, 68. 3 inches of snow for the season so far. Normally 28. 8, again, a top five winter. We still have a lot of snow to go. So look for that to move up, as good morning to you. Meteorologist Christina Loren, with it microclimate weather alert. Gusty wind, heavy rainfall impacting the bay area right in the heart of your morning rush hour. And this morning on rossen reports, the epidemic of underage drinking. Thousands of teenagers die every year as a result, and Authorities Say its often adults supplying them the alcohol. So today National Investigative correspondent jeff rossen used hidden cameras to put adults to the test. The results are shocking. They are. And so many people are dying from this. Spring break is coming up. And you know what that means, teenagers are looking to score alcohol. And youre about to see how easy it is for them to get it. If you were walking into a liquor store and a couple of kids youve never met before asked you, hey, can you buy us booze . Would you do it . Wait until you see what we found. Surprising results when we went undercover in the suburbs. Its the middle of the day. And these kids want a drink. Do you think you could get me a sixpack . They hit the jackpot. Adults they just met buying them booze. 7. Were watching it all on hidden camera. Hi, maam. Oh, youve got to be kidding me. Make no mistake, underage drinking can turn tragic. 4,700 young people dying each year from alcohol poisoning to drunk driving. Authorities say its often an adult supplying the booze. So we set up an experiment in suburb suburban new jersey. We wired up this store with our hidden cameras and hired these two actors. Theyre both over 21 but posing as underage teens. Excuse me, sir. Approaching nearly two dozen customers. Do you think you could get us a six pack . We were encouraged. None of the men gave them alcohol. I dont think so. Just a couple of beers. No. You look like a baby. But the women. Hey, maam, do you think you could do me a big favor . Were about to surprise us. Do you think you could get me a sixpack . How could you do this to me . She seems to know its wrong, but keep watching. Thank you. Give me that. Thats right. She goes inside, grabs the beer and gives our fake teens the alcohol. You guys dont get in trouble. Thats when i come out to talk. Oh, no. I was thinking about you guys when i did it. Why did you do that . Because i felt guilty. You feel bad . Yes, i do feel bad. Theyre going to do it whether i buy it or somebody else buys it. Some women did say no. Can you do me a favor . Sorry, no. I cant. Please. But it didnt take long to find another yes. Excuse me, could you do us a favor and grab us a sixpack . If i get in trouble im sorry, guys. But suddenly she changes her mind. She buys the beer and within minutes, this discreet handoff. Be safe, guys, please. Hi, maam. Oh, youve got to be kidding me. Why did you do it . They looked old enough. I thought they didnt have i. D. Next time ill know. We showed our results to jan withers, president of mothers against drunk driving. No man gave our actors alcohol, but it was the women who did. I found that just amazing. I expect them to be more protective, more cautious. But the biggest shock of the day came from this next woman. What do you want . Come on. A sixpack of bud light. She issues this warning. If you ever give me trouble for this, i will hunt you down like a dog. She gives them the beer outside even offering this tip. Dont hang out in front of the liquor store. Youve got to be a little bit further away next time. You know, it can be dangerous for kids to have alcohol. Look, polimister, get away f me. Its dangerous, not fun and games at all. And we need to protect our kids. Told you it was surprising. Police say there is a reason the legal age is 21 to drink. Studies show, kids get drunk faster because they dont weigh as much and theyre more likely, as we all know, to use bad judgment when they are drunk. Experts say our story should be a wakeup call for everybody, matt, and a good one either to talk to your kids so they dont go and do that. What was stunning to me, even as they would give the kids the beer, they would then say to them, now, be good. As if thats enough. Theres tug of war going on in their minds. Coming up, did she drop too much weight on her way to being crowned the biggest loser . Rachel frederickson to respond to criticism shes been facing. S, it was 1600. Now its 2400. Exactly. And you cant find your scores. You go on to the College Board website why would you want to do that . Lets look them up. Okay. Because i guarantee i had one of the lowest scores here. I guarantee that i got 1400, but thats because i added up the three times i took the s. A. T. S. Exactly right. Youre not allowed to do that . No. No. In that case, i got 1100. There you go. Hey, our good buddy, jimmy fallon, the hits keep coming for him. In our third hour, jack will be here as well so do the experiment. Put it on. I should put it on. Down to my feet. Little man in a big mans suit. Thats whats trending today. All right, let us turn now to our love your selfie series. This morning, how our habits, both good and bad, are passed from one generation to the next generation. Nbc special anchor Maria Shriver has more on that. Maria, good morning to you. Good morning to you, matt. Well, we enlisted the help of cameron diaz, who can now add a new title to her bio, that of author. Her now book, the body book, is an indepth look at the food we put into our bodies affects us inside and out. So, cameron and i sat down with a handful of mothers and daughters to understand how their own habits influence each other. The reason i wrote the book is because i really, really, truly believe theres not one generation yet of mothers who have raised their daughters understanding the actual science of their bodies. Gorgeous girl. Marker. Love you, mom. I love you, too. What can mothers do to help their daughters to have a healthy relationship with their body . Really, the answer of how we can be who we want to be and who were meant to be is really having the knowledge of knowing whats going on within our bodies. Do you feel like youre in the body youre meant to have . And do you feel like your mother helped you with that or messed you up . [ laughter ] i think my mom did a great job. I was taught always, always from day one that beauty comes from within. And on the flip side of that, ive tried to impart also to emily and our other daughter, claire, dont do what i did. Whatd you do . I ate ive eaten my way to this point. Im upset, i want a cookie. Im happy, i want a cupcake. We always just hear about food and, you know, thinfat, thinfat. But for you to talk about it in terms of what you put in your body came out on your face that saying that they always say you are what you eat. Extra cheese, extra sauce, no onions. I literally had 50 im not exaggerating, 50 acnes all over my face. You get to the place of thinking, what is this really doing . If its doing that to my face, what is it doing to my inners, you know . You modified your diet and what you were putting inside, and lo and behold, your skin yes, the last thing for me was but something that i never thought i could live without is cheese. Cheese was my goto, and i never thought that i would be able to live without it. Now i dont even think about it. She taught me about the eating healthy and cooking, steaming. So, you actually eat for nutrition. Yeah. Most of the time. I go on my little binges. I love haugen dias, but i try to every day put something healthy in my body. We eat for so many reasons. And you know, the most important reason we should eat is for nutrition. Did you know growing up whats good for you . I didnt have white bread until i was 9 years old because it wasnt allowed in the house. And i didnt know why it wasnt good for me. Understanding those things i think is so empowering, and if you had that information to convey to her, she might have thought of things differently at 9 years old. Do you think its that women our age are actually learning about our bodies through our daughters . I think so. I think so. Shes taught me so much. I knew what to eat and what not to eat, not that i did it, but through her, im learning so much more about why. I think that the knowledge of your body and how it works on a se Cellular Level and understanding what that truly means is something that a mother can understand not just herself but then can pass on to her daughter or children. Matt, its also electricity that on our today aol body image survey it found that 51 of all parents worry about how their body image affects their children, and im probably in that percentage. Yeah, but go back to your person. So, your mom was someone i know who always emphasized health over looks. As a young girl, did you always see eye to eye with your mom on that . No. I dont know any young girl who always sees eye to eye with her mom. My mom stressed Mental Health and physical health, and she was also really adamant. She came out of the Womens Movement not to focus on your looks, but to focus on your brain. But she didnt talk a lot about nutrition, and as most of the women in that room said, thats a thing in the last 10, 15 years, where so many of our daughters are actually educating us about whats good for us, about kale. I never heard of kale or quinoa or any of these things until recently, you know. I was on the twinkie bandwagon. Ive got natalie here, too, maria. Youve got two boys. Yeah. Do you actively talk about this or just lead by example . I think its important for parents to lead as example. My husband and i are fitness addicts and we get out and exercise five days a week, and i think they know that in their lives, exercise is important, its a great way for them to be more confident and to, i think ultimately, feel like they can do anything. But its empowerment. Empowerment. Its not about looking better in your clothes and the girls will like you more. Its not about fitting, being a certain size. I think its more about having confidence in yourself and empowering you and feeling strong and healthy. Natalie, thank you. Maria, thank you very much. We appreciate it. Thank you, matt. Lets go over to savannah. All right, matt, thank you. Well, on the topic of body image, there was a bit of controversy tied to the Season Finale of the biggest loser. [ cheers and applause ] 24yearold voiceover artist Rachel Frederickson started off on the biggest loser weighing 260 pounds, but quickly dropped down to 150 in just four months on the ranch. But that was nothing compared to dropping an additional 45 pounds in the 3 1 2 months at home on her own before the shows live finale earlier this month, surprising the shows trainers and raising questions about her health. Some have wondered if her dramatic weight loss of almost 60 of her original weight had gone too far too fast. And Rachel Frederickson is with us now. Good morning to you. Good morning, savannah. I wonder, when did you realize, oh, my gosh, theres this backlash . I mean, here you are at the moment, you won the biggest loser, you worked so hard for it, and then you find out people are saying, wait, maybe shes too thin . Yeah. I mean, i did work so hard for the finale and for finding myself again. I felt amazing on the stage, i felt like i shined in my dress, and i got off the stage and twitter was all abuzz. The first thing was there was just so much chatter about it. Were you surprised at that . I was, because i felt so proud of everything i had accomplished. My journey was my own, and i loved it, i lived it, so i felt really proud of what i did. Can you understand now, when you look at those images why some people were worried . You are very, very thin. And thats the point of the show, but are you convinced its healthy weight loss and not something that went too far . No, it was absolutely healthy weight loss. I dieted, exercised and did it healthy the whole way. So, i appreciate all the concern, and i can see where it comes from, and there is the movie magic, you know . Its over seven months. Its almost a year of my life losing the weight. So, i was very unhealthy at 260 pounds, and now, post finale, im the happiest and most alive ive ever felt, so. Are you at the weight you want to be now . I am. Im in the maintenance mode, which is just as hard as losing the weight, i think. It might be harder, actually. Yeah. I feel like it can be. Adding in the family and socializing and work and getting it all accomplished, its a big balance. We talked a lot this morning about moms and daughters, and i wondered what your own experience was, because here you were actually an athlete. You were not someone who grew up struggling with your weight. What do you think you learned from your mom, for good or for bad, on these issues . For me, its the confidence. She has taught me to be independent, to love myself and to be me, because thats the best person you can be. If youre the best version of you, you know, thats wonderful. So, losing that a little bit with a heart broken and a heartbreak, being so young, i wanted to get that back. Shes my number one role model. So, if i can be independent and confident and just empower myself. And how is your process now . I mean, do you ever fear that youll slide back or the old habits will come back . Do you look at those images of when you started out on the biggest loser and think, oh, my gosh, what if i get into that situation again . Yeah, of course, that thought always comes up, but i think that what ive learned is that i have an inner strength, i have a voice, and i can trust myself. I didnt trust myself. I was critical and i judged myself. And so, now thats why i love love your selfie week. Thats what its become, just this self image that youre with you the rest of your life. Youd better accept you and love yourself. And if everyone can have that gift, i mean, thats amazing. Thats what ive gotten from the biggest loser. Well, rachel, you worked so hard, you look great. Its great having you here. Thank you so much. Thank you, savannah. Tomorrow on love your selfie, well tackle the power of touchedup perfection in pop culture today. And just ahead, golden globe winner Keri Russells here. And meryl davis and Charlie White show us why they won gold in sochi live on our rink. Good morning to you. It is 8 26. Its bringing rain from brownsville all the way to daytona beach, rainfall amounts about 2 to 3 inches, heaviest stuff between houston and new orleans. Thats 8 33 now. I want to take it right to the radar this morning. Christina loren here with an nbc bay area weather alert. It is expected to continue to intensify. Well keep you live here on nbc bay area with updates throughout the day. You go. Youre going to get another word in. All right, al, thank you very much. Shadow. For others, its not so simple. A new procedure is gaining popularity, facial hair transplants. This season, the hippest new accessory for men, the beard. With the recent influx of facial hair on the red carpet and areas like brooklyn, the procedures gaining popularity. But some doctors have been performing it for over a decade. We have a series of rvs, chain them to each other. But its a nice time. Youve been together for a dozen years or so. You expect changes personally, what have the changes been musically . Well, i think we focus pretty heavy on making music that moves people emotionally early on and were slowly wandering into the music that moves people physically. Just trying to get a little groove on. Different sound in the new album . Yeah, worked with a producer named stuart price. He really pushed us to tap the old toe. You cant be in the music business for a dozen years and not learn some pretty key lessons about the business and life in that world. What is the biggest lesson youve learned . If youre not yourself, people are eventually going to sniff it out and stop buying your albums and stuff. So i think the best thing is just to stick with who you are and what you know and as you grow, let your art grow with it. Yeah. And youve grown amazingly because youre smiling you told me something a second ago on the commercial break. That when you were watching meryl davis and Charlie White perform on the rink, you revealed something to me that you had apparently not revealed before. No, i think, you know, todays as good a day as any to reveal to the American People that i am a bit of a figure skater. You are . No, ive never said it before. How long did you figure skate . Long enough to get off the ground. I did some jumps and stuff and twirls. I never wore frills or anything or makeup. But, you know. All right. Roll the video. We have that. From nbc news, this is todays take with al roker, Natalie Morales, willie geist and tamron hall live from studio 1a in rockefeller plaza. Welcome to today on this wednesday morning, february 26th, 2014. Im willie geist along with al roker, Natalie Morales, tamron hall. Snow flurries, a blizzard out there. Not quite. It was for the four seconds. Oversell. Weve got a lot to talk about. We were talking about this front page story in the New York Times about obesity dropping 43 among Young Children in a decade, were doing our love your selfie series. Really terrific. So really important finding. And you hope this is turning the tide. Yes. And we saw the first lady yesterday focus on cafeteria meals. What kids are being able to eat while at school. And thats equally important because we know if they have those unhealthy options at school, when parents arent there, like any kid. Exactly. And the study talks about parents just shopping smarter. They have more information, fewer calories, like sugar. A lot of people knocked mayor bloomberg, but if you look at the things he did that now have become kind of Standard Operating Procedure across country. Like calorie counts and fat grams on menus. You know, you are able to make these choices. But manufacturers are also making food you see the yogurt aisle, you have all the kids yogurts. For me, it was straight to the cereal aisle. Even with the yogurts, theres a lot of sugar in them. A little bit of good news there. That report about obesity. Were looking at the cover of People Magazine. Paula deen has given a new interview. Looking at how shes doing about nine months now after the controversy when she was the subject of a lawsuit alleging racial discrimination. The lawsuit was later dismissed by a judge. Paula tells people now, some people said i never apologized. If anyone did not hear me, i want to apologize. I would never hurt anyone intentionally, never. Among the other revelations, she says when she woke up every morning, it was like her world was crashing down. She said she took comfort by reading positive comments posted online. She said i couldnt get off the computer except to go to the bathroom or eat. One other tidbit, she said, after all this controversy, she made eight cakes in six days. She did what she knew how to do. She made cakes. I dont know if im going to be able to survive this. I wouldnt have baked the cakes, i have have eaten the cake batter. You know what, it is a lesson. I think its a lesson to all of us. I think for people who were critical of her and i was disappointed when you hear these details and even saddened, but we are about forgiving. And theres so much, but a pound of flesh you can give. And once you see someone is on the ground, do you keep kicking them . She has apologized. Everyone can make their choice, but she did the right thing at this point. So do we do the right thing and forgive her . We all love a good comeback story. A sincere one, because there are some fake ones. Absolutely. And you have to believe whole heartedly, she has felt this emotionally. And shes paid a hard price. And we know shell make a good comeback. We know, she was just at the food festival, got a big ovation from the crowd. Seems her fans, at least, have moved on from this. This story i love. You reported it earlier this morning. A california couple has dug up about 10 million in gold coins in their backyard. They were out walking their dog around the property, they noticed the top of a decaying canister just kind of peeking out from the ground. Turns out it was filled with 19th century u. S. Gold coins valued at 10 million. Wow. If only. The couple wisely keeping identities and locations secret. They dont want people coming to their yard. Specifically, they dont want relatives showing up. Its like, i dont want my cousin from way back in the day. You know, if people know who they are, theyre going to walk down have a morning coffee. People with pick axes. Oh, yeah. Its true. Listen, i was on ebay last night looking for the old the guy on the beach with the headphones. Thats me. Its so funny. How many have you done that where you take out you have . We were at a beach once and there was a nice couple and my kids were fascinated with what they were doing. And they offered the kids an opportunity to do it. They loved it. Except like two hours later, they were pulling up bottle caps. All that work for a rusty bottle cap. Are you kidding me . But they found it. They found it. And the coins are in pristine condition. They say probably from the 1800s from a mining crew. I was on with willie earlier, and i said, how do you know the value . Do you go into the bank and say, weigh this. How do you know the value . Thats right. All that gold. I think it was worth Something Like 28,000. In the 1890s. But nowadays, yeah, 10 million. There you go. Go get it. Stinky pete, the prospect. Stinky pete. From toy story . Yeah. Theres a snake in my boot all right. So were in the toddler business or some of us. Weve all been through these tantrums. Theres a video of a toddler having a tantrum over an ipad. About two weeks ago, daniel and hope filmed hopes daughter ashlyn having a meltdown over not being allowed to play with her ipad before bed. Daniel posted the video to youtube. What do you want . My ipad. Did you say ipad . My ipad my ipad. Why do you want your ipad . I want that. Shes saying i want to go to bed. Thats bedtime. As our executive producer point in ti pointed out this morning, that aint a meltdown. Ill show you a meltdown. My son, once christmas time, middle of the aisle at target, fullon like fistpounding, banging his feet on the floor. What did you do . I picked him up, pushed the cart away and said lets go. Threw him over your shoulder. Walked out. Whos that lady running with that kid . Hes my kid, i promise. Wow. See, thats an overly tired child. Exactly. When i first heard, i thought, im expecting something spectacular. And that wasnt i mean, my kid where they turned into the tazmanian devil. Oh. Weve got the gold right here. Ive got the real gold. Forget that stuff in the ground. Ive got the gold for in my opinion the champion of hosting right here. I want to crown him the champion. Al, how you doing . Hi, guys, how you doing . Helping you get rid of that spare tire or muffin top. Its been over a month since weve seen them. And of course, theyve encountered a few bumps along the way. But theyre here to share their Smart Solutions with joy bauer and fitness trainer. Good to see you. Hey. I wasnt here when it started, but you look fabulous now. You have to keep in mind, this is less than two months. When you hear these numbers how much theyre down, youre going to fall over. You weighed them in this morning. Kelly started at 177 pounds, shes now 152 pounds. That means shes down a total of 25 pounds. Wow. Congratulations. Okay. Tamron started at 178 pounds now 161 pounds. Shes down 17 pounds. All right. Ralph started at 200 pounds, hes now 176 pounds for a total loss of 24 pounds. Congratulations. Fantastic. You can see great. Well, lets Start Talking about some of the i think a lot of people hit those bumps in the road in their weight loss. First starting off with their six pack food problems, kelly, you had issues. What was your problem . And how did you solve it . The problem being, i think the winter and the cold and i grave hearty foods. I want substance and i wanted to be warm. So i just came up with a soup real quick, some broccoli, vegetable broth, chicken broth, whatever you have, blend it all up if you want skim milk in it to make it a cream of milk. You can top it off with cheese, a cheddar, and add a crunch to it. She nailed it with this soup. One cup is only 60 calories. Wow. And theres so many creative yummy things you can do to sort of make comfort foods. You can use lean ground turkey, reduced fat dairy. I put a ton of comfort food makeovers on our website at today. Com. And im also going to tweet out all of these recipes using the todaysixpack after the show. Good. Anything you want to add to it. Now, the fitness problem you encountered, staying motivated, avoiding the mindless eating, which i think a lot of us do. Jeff, how did we tackle that . Sure, i know that kelly did quite a bit at home with ankle weights and just kind of moving around the house more. The thing is that usually prime time tv means prime time snacking. Yeah. And for most of us, its tough to break that habit. So i dont really want people to overhaul that pattern immediately. But what they can do, is start modifying it. And the best way to do that, exercise during commercials. Of course you should watch anybody who advertises. But at least get up, do some body weights, squats, you can march in place like joys doing. Jumping jacks, anything, just do it during commercials. What was your problem . Water. Im not a fan of water, really. But i needed to find a way to get more fluids in. So i mixed the cranberry juice with water but also told i could use lemon, lime, cucumber, anything to spice it up. Youre putting a shot of fruit juice into water or for people that like bubbles, give up the soda and go for the naturally flavored seltzers. Getting my steps and getting the exercise in. I walk from work home. Its about 4. 3 miles. And i do that about two or three times a week. It gets the stress down and i feel great. If thats not an option, what do you do . Got to move further away from work . The body wants to wind down toward the end of the day. The best thing to do is avoid highthreshold exercises. Opt for yoga, instead, lowthreshold moves and theres great moves on today. Com. And really quickly to you, what was your food problem . My problem is best laid plans. Im never there when my meals ready for me because i get called out as a paramedic to respond to an emergency. I usually find myself very hungry after a call from the stresses. I have carrots, it takes a while to get them in, to chew them and get that crunchiness and i like to have peanuts and cashews because you have to undress each of them one at a time. Gets a gold medal. And jeff, really quickly and ralph, what was your fitness issue. Not really an issue. Im competing, i monitor everything. And my wife and my son, they have really become very, very competitive. And shes doing a great job. And shes watching. There they are. Watching everything. And my sons leaving in a few days for the air force. Congratulations. Keep moting each other. We do. Keep motivating us, as well. Weve also posted three more of the ab blasting recipes on today. Com. You could be making big mistakes at your job that could cost you in the long run. Here with smart advice, creator of elearning course, art of business influence. Good morning to you both. Good morning. We know its not a mistake to ask for a raise. Thats a good idea. Absolutely. But when you ask for the raise can be the problem. It is all about timing. Think of the week. No one wants to be asked to hand over more money on a monday or tuesday and a depressing day. Theres a lot of work to be done, aim for thursday or friday. But better than that, time it so youve had a big win, won a new client, come up with a cool idea. Thats when you ask. And if you get rejected, dont walk away a loser, negotiate before you leave. Especially important for women, we dont negotiate. Ask for a week of vacation. Ask for, you know, some flex leave so you can at least, you know, get something out of the meeting. No doesnt always have to mean no. Next, you say failing to maximize your 401 k is a big, big mistake. Huge. What are you leaving on the table . Tax savings, potential match from your employer, which is essentially free money. Max it out as much as you can. How about this one, mark . Spreading negativity. Whats a good example of what that can do. The sort of person comes into the office going, oh, this winter, the trains are late, the traffic was bad. That kind of negativity brands you as a negative person. And in the end, everyone around you just wants to kill themselves. Youve got to try and avoid that level. Dont brand yourself negative, be more positive or keep it to yourself. That is bad for the office. Gossiping, although we all engage in it, it does brand you as someone that cannot be trusted. Okay. Good to know. Next, mark you say, and i love this, leaving the meeting is a big mistake. And were not talking about physically getting up and walking out. Its about what you put out there when youre in a meeting. Exactly. This is about how you sit in a meeting. There is a notional imaginary curtain between the edge of the table and the ceiling. You should be through that. This means im in the meeting. I look interested. The mean you lean back, youve left the meeting and not only that, watch people around you. If they start looking at their phones or leaning back, youve lost them. All right. Lean in. Lean in. Okay. Thats good advice. Lets talk about getting too comfortable in your job. This happens to a lot of people, who say ill be here forever. You should be always updating linkedin. The best advice i ever got from my first manager was even when you first started a job, doesnt mean game over. The best time to get a job is when you have one, you want to be proactive, not reactive. And just because youve got the job doesnt mean youre going to stay there. Every day is like a job interview. Never give up. And everybody is replaceable, right . All right. Great advice, thank you, both. Good to see you both. Well be back in a moment. But first, this is today on nbc. Kathie lee and hoda coming up next. Yeah. Whats up . Not only do we have Charlie White and meryl davis. Yeah. We have their mothers. Oh. We are so stoked to have the moms here. And we have mark burnett from the new movie son of god. And the fray. And dont you dare keep trying to sneak things in that i hate when its not ihoda day. Its winesday wednesday, stop it. Thats enough. We talked about how everything was stripped away so quickly. Before facts were even in. All hastily we thought because so many people have said such terrible things. She said it, she admitted it, she said for those of you who havent done anything terrible cast the first stone. Always a good one to bring up. Yeah. Weve always said that we believed that paula deen would come back. I believe every Single Person deserves redemption. If theres repentance, there should be redemption. Every single one of us needs a second chance. If you cant give mercy you dont deserve to get mercy. In the article she said when she woke up, it was like the world was crashing down again, she said its interesting because sometimes twitter can be so cruel and facebook, she said her fans positive confidence boosted her during that time. I know the feeling. Ive been through some tough stuff, too. Just to know that not everybody out there believes the allegations, number one thing. Also, somebody loves you anyway even if youve admitted to something. She admitted to saying it. We get it. We love ya. Cant wait for you to come back. New company, 75 million deal with a private investment firm. She said, some people said i never apologized. If anyone would hear me, she said she had. She shouldnt do it anymore. Shes done it. There are going to be those people out there, hoda, no matter how many times she would say it, theyve decided they are not going to. She should wipe the dust off her feet and keep going. She learned how badly words can hurt. Its not like shes saying, too bad, so sad. She felt terrible about what she said. Lets move on to other things. Okay. This is good . What . The banning of the paparazzi for children . I was going to talk about achy breaky heart again. No, youre not. People magazine i cant believe robin thicke i know. I cant believe it. Robin thicke and paula patton are breaking up. Tmz is reporting, thats one of my sources, they said that hes trying to get back with her. Theyve been together since they were kids but all those pictures of robin with all those girls. Remember the one when he had his arm around the girl in the mirror, you could see what he was doing . Yeah. Why did you bring that up . Yeah. Okay. Because we can still take their pictures. They are paparazzi whats the word im looking for . Available. But People Magazine has now started a ban on using childrens pictures of celebrities unless its okay with the parents. Yeah. I think thats fantastic. Theres something that a lot of celebs have been fighting for. Dont take pictures of my kids when were walking to school, going shopping. Even though theyre in public. Please dont show the young kids. People magazine decided they would not print pictures that the paparazzi has taken of celebs children. They can very much traumatize children. That was true. When my kids were little it happened all the time. I ended up suing twice two publications. People magazine has always been the crown jewel. Theyre a class act. Entertainment tonight is doing the same thing. Jess jared, whats that . I know. I havent heard that. Jess jared is a website about a guy named jared. Its a website. Its just about jared.
