States of emergency have been declared in at least six states. Federal offices and schools in the Nations Capital are closed this morning. You know, philadelphias only 6 inches away from having the second snowiest winter ever in what has been a recordbreaking year or season for so many cities across the country. So here we are in march in the middle of yet another winter storm. And, actually, the forecast for this storm had gotten better for states further south. But either way, an unwelcome forecast in what has been a very tough winter. The calendar says march, but Mother Nature didnt get the memo. A west coast winter storm in the form of torrential rain and wind over the weekend. Morning rain in l. A. Had the oscars donning a poncho, but dried up in time for the Academy Awards red carpet. Outside of hollywood, people in california still cleaning up the mud and the mess. And thousands in arizona left without power after a westcoast soaker. In denver, heavy snow wreaking havoc on the highways and causing a deadly 100car pileup. Had to be a Chain Reaction of cars hitting and hitting and hitting. Reporter messy weather moving east and carrying into the workweek. First up, the midwest hit with snow and ice. Residents in indiana, counting down the days until spring after a punishing and recordbreaking winter. Im ready for spring. The south also getting hammered. Arkansas hit with a dangerous ice storm. A fatal car accident on slick roads. The midatlantic scene white yet again. This latest winter storm will eventually head out to sea, but not before hitting portions of the northeast. You can see in Atlantic City this is another commuter nightmare. This is where we have just the driving snow thats going to stick with us all through the morning. And then once the snow ends, its another polar plunge, in fact, temperatures will be about 20 to 40 degrees below average today, and get this, tonight in philadelphia, itll be about 5 degrees here, the alltime coldest temperature in march in philadelphia is 5 degrees. That record set back in 1872. So it is going to be another bad morning, but it gets very cold later on this afternoon. Matt . Dylan, thanks. Well, guys, weve got another bash from winters icy grip. And as you can see right now, weve got snow stretching from new england all the way back to charleston, west virginia. And to the south, you can see that purple, thats an icy mix headed south as that cold air makes its way down. Youre going to see for the day today. Right now washington, d. C. , snow through the afternoon, into the early evening commute, then partly cloudy skies, but look at that temperature drop from 32 to 17 degrees. The morning commute from philly, d. C. , roanoke, norfolk, youve got snow, but by the afternoon, it pushes to the south. But you saw that icy mix. Snowfall amounts, heres what were looking for during the day today. Elkins, west virginia, 6 to 12 inches. Another 9 inches in washington, d. C. Richmond, 4 to 8. 5 to 9 in salisbury. Atlantic city, close to a foot, philly ends up with 6 inches. To the south of this as that colder air makes its way into the warm air, we are going to be looking at an ice mix right now. About. 10 inch. While its not going to cause big problems as far as Power Outages, it is going to make roads slick from knoxville, wilmington, all the way to columbia as those temperatures continue to push south and drop down well below freezing in the 40s, all the way down into the teens later tonight. Thank you, al. And now to the crisis in ukraine where Russian Forces have invaded and complete control of the crimea region. This has left the white house with a very difficult decision of what to do next, how far to push this. Secretary of state john kerry getting set to travel to the region. Lets get to nbcs bill neely. Bill, good morning to you. Reporter yes, russia is tightening its grip here in crimea. Europes borders are being redrawn by force and the pressure is mounting on president obama and the west to do something. Here, Russian Troops have the Ukrainian Army pinned down. Russian troops have fought many wars to take crimea, this time they didnt have to. They marched in and occupied it without firing a shot and without resistance. It took just three days. The russian march across crimea is relentless and seems unstoppable. The big question is, where exactly in ukraine will these men stop . They still surround Ukrainian Army bases. This one is the biggest. Ukrainian troops inside are trapped. They have removed their weapons. Theres no sign theyre preparing to fight the russians. The standoff, though, is a dangerous one. Neither ukraine nor the west has been able to stop this takeover. Its an incredible act of aggression. It is really a stunning, willful choice by president putin to invade another country. The Obama Administration is now consulting with allies on what pressure to put on russias president putin. He may find himself with asset freezes, American Business may pull back. There may be a further tumble of the ruble. Theres a huge price to pay. Youve got now only economic options through the eu. And i would use those. The u. S. Calls whats happened in crimea an incredible act of aggression. But this crisis is far from over. And in the last few minutes, russian fighter jets have flown over the black sea, violating ukraines air space. The russians testing, probing, pushing ukraine and pushing the wests response. Savannah. Bill neely on the ground there, thank you. Lets turn to dave remnick, a moscowbased reporter in the waning years of the soviet union. He is a noted authority on russian relations. Good morning to you. Good morning to you. A battle of wills between putin and obama. Its much more than that, but what do you think is really at stake here . Well, russia wants to assert itself on the world stage. We saw that in pop cultural terms during the olympics, but this is really serious. Now they want to assert their strength in the country where they have legitimate interests, but doing it through invasion. Doing it through invasion. No question about it. So far limited it to crimea, but the great economic bread basket of that country is in eastern ukraine. This could spread to the east and its already dangerous and it could get horrendous. What is the white house supposed to do . On friday we see the president coming out saying to putin, there will be high costs if you invade. The very next day, he invades. What leverage do we have . Economic leverage, diplomatic leverage, but i dont think in any way the United States or europe has any interest in making this military, making it a military clash between the United States and russia. Because we know how horrible and bloody that could get. Lets remember, first of all, theres been no shooting, no extensive bloodshed in crimea yet. So far this is a demonstration war. Russias assertion of strength. We can do this because we can. They feel betrayed by europe, the eu in ukraine, and they want their interests asserted there. Theyre entirely full of it when they say that ukrainians have somehow been beating up, threatening the lives of russianspeaking ridiculous, that has not happened. Hasnt happened in crimea. Hasnt happened in eastern ukraine. Theres a certain irony here. We were all together at the olympics a few weeks ago where putin was trying to demonstrate to the world that russia is a modern state, and seems to have undone it in a matter of three days. They have. Look, the United States also does not have the leverage it wants in historical terms. Invading countries is something the United States knows about from really raw experience. And russia knows that and asserts that day in and day out on Russian Television all the time. Thats a cost, too. You wrote this weekend, these are going to be frightening days we see in the next few and worse. They already are. They already are. Thank you very much. Lets turn back now to los angeles. And the Oscar Pistorius murder trial underway in south africa. The former olympic runner pleaded not guilty this morning to a charge of murdering his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp. Her mother and other relatives. Prosecutors say pistorius last year. Pistorius says he thought she was an intruder. We will have much more on the trial coming up later in the program. Well, south koreas confirmed this morning that north korea has launched two more shortrange missiles. Its second launch in less than a week. North korea fired the missiles about 300 miles into the sea off the countrys eastern coast. North korea launched similar missiles last week in an apparent protest against ongoing u. S. south korea military exercises. Almost 400 people arrested outside the white house sunday after they strapped themselves to a fence to protest the proposed Keystone Xl Oil pipeline. The demonstrators were mostly College Students who participated in a peaceful march. They want president obama to reject the pipeline because they say itll worsen global warming. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is in washington today for a highstakes meeting with president obama. Its in effort to keep middle east peace negotiations alive as aprils target date for a preliminary agreement inches closer. The two leaders are also expected to discuss the latest developments in iran. And later this week, netanyahu will travel to california to meet with tech leaders in silicon valley. Investigators are still trying to figure out what started a fire this weekend that destroyed an Historic Hotel in alabama. Flames engulfed the mentone springs hotel, burning it and an antique store to the ground. The hotel was built in 1884, it was on the National Register of historic places. We are waiting for the Public Information officer with Freemont Police to give us a better sense of what happened. We know this was an accident, the driver is cooperating with police. We saw him leave with police, not in handcuffs, leave with police in a squad car to be interviewed. Again, no identification yet on the man whos still laying out here in the middle of the road. We just know that he was hit and killed. It is probably about an hour, hour and a half ago. Secretary of state john kerry heading to kiev tomorrow to meet with the transitional ukrainian government. And the trial of Oscar Pistorius is beginning today in south africa. The socalled blade runner is charged with intentionally killing his girlfriend. Today correspondent jeff rossen is covering the trial for us. Jeff, good morning to you. Good morning to you. Theyre calling this the trial of the century in south africa, day one, and were underway, several hours of testimony already. No question about it, Oscar Pistorius shot and killed his girlfriend at the time, Reeva Steenkamp. The question is what was going through his mind at the time. Was it an accident as he claims or premeditated murder . Oscar pistorius slipped into court through a side door. Once a national hero. The first ever double amputee to compete in the olympics, now a national spectacle, accused of killing his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp in cold blood. Today, her mother is in court, facetoface with pistorius for the First Time Since reevas death. Do you understand the charge . I do, my lady. How do you plead . Not guilty, my lady. But prosecutors fired back saying their case against him is strong. The only inference from the circumstantial evidence pistorius and reeva were the it couple on the red carpet. Hi. Im oscars date tonight. In fact, just days before her death, they looked happy. Kissing in this Grocery Store Surveillance Video obtained by sky news. But then, her tragic end. Reeva was sleeping over last valentines day, pistorius says he heard an intruder in the bathroom. So startled, he didnt even have time to put on his prosthetic legs. Grabbed his gun, walked across the bedroom and pumped four bullets through the bathroom door. It was really reeva in there. These crime scene photos tell ree bullets hit her and killed her. Prosecutors say this was no accident. And they can prove it. Prosecutors have to prove intent. Regardless of whether it was Reeva Steenkamp behind the door. If it was an intruder, he was intending to shoot. No matter who he shot back there, its murder in south africa. Whoever he intended to shoot, its murder. Reporter one of Oscar Pistorius neighbors took the stand here in south africa a short time ago saying she heard, quote, bloodcurdling screams that night. First from a woman, then from a man, then heard several gun shots. Shes being crossexamined right now. One other quick know. This is not a jury trial as it would act in the states, guys, a single judge with two assistants who will decide his fate. All right, jeff rossen, thank you. And a programming note. Of course, as you turn to the oscars, people were concerned about the weather. Well, they have taken off the covering for a while because it looked like it was going to be okay. And as i was going to the site, thank you very much rain. Yes. And then all of a sudden the sun came out and it was actually hot. And then had like four different weather patterns within about three hours. And guess what, theres another one moving in here thats going to bring more rain to the west which they do not need. Pacific moisture, kind of the pineapple express, this moisture coming in from hawaii. Rain in the pacific northwest. Snow back through the mountains. Generally 1 to 2 inches of rain. Foot and a half of snow in the cascades, as well, rest of the country for today, icy conditions in the southeastern atlantic states, wet weather through the south as the cold air makes its way in. Northern california into the pacific northwest. Bitterly cold, but clear from the great lakes into the northeast. And plenty of sunshine, mild weather through the southwest, phoenix today will see a high of 75 degrees. Thats some more rainfall today. Make sure you grab that rain gear. But overall, looking nice and dry for most of the bay area for the next few hours, which means you have a few hours to take care of those outdoor plans before that rain moves in. Well still hit the 60s. Mostly in the 50s right now. Headed towards the mid 60s today. When you time out the system, by 1 00 p. M. , showers spread into the south bay. After a fourday trial and hour of jury deliberations, Kerry Kennedy, the daughter of robert f. Kennedy was found not guilty at her drugged driving trial. She walked out of court flanked by family and friends. The case back in july of 2012. And Kerry Kennedy joins us now. Good morning, nice to see you. Great to be here, thanks. For the first time in 18 months, you spent a weekend without these charges hanging over your head. How did that feel . It was very nice. Great to have that off my mind. I read a lot of coverage of the trial over the last couple of days, kerry and seemed like two groups here with strong opinions. One opinion was this case would never have ended up in court had it not been the fact your last name is kennedy. And another group saying you would not have been acquitted had your last name not been kennedy. I think theyre both wrong. I think in west chester county, they have a policy of pursuing every single case of driving under the influence whether the police think the persons innocent, whether the d. A. Thinks theyre innocent. And this is a terrible policy because it means that a lot of people who are innocent get caught up in the criminal justice system. Lets talk about the impact of the kennedy name. Some of the critics, your critics talked about the fact that you brought your mom, your 85yearold mom to court every day. And during your testimony when you took the witness stand, you referred to your dad who has run for president and his assassination. And they screamed shes playing the kennedy card to wow this jury. Fair . Right. You know, i think that i won this case for three basic reasons. Number one, i was innocent. Number two, i had competent counsel. And number three, i was willing to bring it to trial. And those are things that many, many, Many Americans have no access to. And thats really what we have to focus on with this case. You talk about competent counsel. You had some of the best lawyers in this country because you can afford to have those lawyers. If your name were kerry jones, do you think you would have had the same outcome . Well, i think that the reason that i had competent counsel because it was accessible to me and thats a big problem in america. Because for so many people who have misdemeanors, are not able to afford counsel. They cant go out and hire lawyers and therefore, they plead to something nay didnt do. Yeah. If your name were kerry jones, you might have taken a plea on this case. So jones is different. So its access to being able to afford hiring a lawyer who is competent to do the case. And thats why its really interesting. Because this is actually the 50th anniversary of the criminal justice act, which was the seminal piece of legislation my father passed as attorney general to assure access to counsel for criminal defense defenders. And we need that in states across our country. We dont have that in new york state today. And weve got to pass legislation which will allow people to have access to competent counsel no matter who they are. What youre talking about now is what your lifes work has been about. If i were to google you, i have a feeling the top 10 or 15 things on that Google Search would be about this trial. Thats not what you want. How much have these charges hurt your ability to do the work youve been doing for most of your life . Well, you know, it does hurt. And thats part of the reason i didnt have a plea. For instance, in this particular case, if i had pled, i would not be allowed to go canada for ten years or australia or new zealand and many, many other countries. In fact, if you plead to Something Like this overseas, youre not allowed back in the United States for ten years. Did you get enough sleep last night . The National Sleep foundation out with a survey this morning. And dr. Nancy snyderman joins us with the results. Nancy, good morning to you. Good morning, matt. All right. Lets take a look at the categories. They asked parents, about 1,000 of them around the country. How much sleep their kids get on a typical night. They found that parents estimate 6 to 10yearolds sleep 8. 9 hours a night, 11 to 12yearolds sleep 8. 2 hours a night and 13 to 14yearolds are sleeping 7. 7 hours a night. Depends on your perspective. For me, those would be heavenly numbers, but how do they stack up for kids . The problem is, you and i arent still growing. Kids need good, Healthy Sleep for their brains to grow and bodies to repair themselves. So those numbers, which i believe are really solid are unfortunately very low. They should be a little higher. If you look at 6 to 10yearolds, we want them to get 10 to 11 hours of sleep a night. By the time kids are teenagers, it can drop about an hour and a half. And then by the time you and i, there are other adults settle into real adulthood, we still have to aim for 7 to 9 hours a night. I think for years, we sort of brushed off sleep as, oh, well, one of those lovely things if you can get it. But we know that people who have good sleep live longer, live better and, in fact, theyre healthier because this is the time your body repairs itself. Lets talk about something that may seem obvious here. The poll found that nearly 3 out of 4 kids between the ages of 6 and 17 have at least one Electronic Device in the bedroom at the time theyre supposed to be going to bed. So were talking about things like cell phones and ipads and ipods and computers. Whats the problem here . Well, if youve ever curled up with your kid to get he or she to sleep, we all have, if you suddenly hear bling bling bling and they have things stuffed under pillows, its just disruptive. So i think you really have to do a clean sweep of a kids bedroom and say, okay, were going to start over. If your computer has to stay in the room for schoolwork, then you have to at least turn off and make sure that screen is not on. That background light is enough to disrupt the brain chemicals. And sorry, kids, all the phones and everything else, ipads, they have to go out of the room. If you look at sort of how you start over. Pick a time for kids to go to sleep. And something called sleep hygiene. Talk about which electronic is going to stay in the room and why it has to be turned off. Make sure the temperature in the childs bedroom is cool enough because hot rooms are usually notoriously bad for sleep. And then, of course, tell kids the music and reading is better off. And then the biggest one, matt, we have to lead by example. Yeah, no question. By the way, not just that the kids are using the devices at bedtime. Once they use them, theyre mentally stimulated and makes it harder for them to fal harder for them to fall asleep. Its terrible. In fact, one hour before your child goes to sleep, stop all the electronic stuff because your brain keeps going even after you turn the off button off. Nancy, as always, thank you very much. In this character, hes so he does his job. I dont think about him being bad. I was wondering about that. Because some actors will say, you know, i try to find the humanity in this bad character. Are you one of those . Sure. You dont judge them and you do the actions and then something happens. I really dont make the distinction good guy or bad guy. You always take their side yourself in them. You have to advocate for them, yes . You do. This is your third movie with wes anderson. Hes so incredible, so unique. What he churns out is so extraordinary. Is that why you keep saying yes to him every time he calls . Yes. And he gives you fun things to do, great to be around. Its great to help him do what he does. Yeah. How would you describe the film . Well, i mean, story wise, its basically about this character played by ray fiennes and his protege. Hes the concierge of a great european hotel. And carries the story through the wars and after the war. There are so many stars in this film. You were all together in a little town in germany, basically held captain while shooting the film. Did that lead to interesting dinners and socializing . Always, always all lived in the same hotel and had formal dinner every night. And we were right on the polish border and sometimes wed go over into poland for dinner, which was cool. I heard you were semidetained on your way back from poland one night. Sure. Walking over the bridge one night, some overeager german cops tried to grab me. Did you give them a menacing look and it was fine . No, i think no, i think i before i let you go, your next film coming out was actually Philip Seymour hoffmans last performance. Its got to make that bittersweet as we talk about that movie. He talked also about the problems going on in ukraine, throughout the world. Even though theyre there for the oscar moment, there are real issues happening around the world. Kerry kennedy took a sleeping pill by accident and got behind the wheel and fell asleep causing her to hit a tractortrailer, damaging her car, but not injuring herself or anyone else. Shes with us now to talk about the trial, what she learned as well as her humanitarian work on behalf of the foundation which bears the name of her father, senator robert f. Kennedy. Thanks for being with us this morning. Great to be here. Thanks, willie. You hear the verdict, not guilty. Relief, what were you feeling at that point . Yeah, mostly feeling incredibly grateful to my family and to my friends, to the jury, to my really wonderful lawyers and also to god for finding me not guilty. How concerned were you, kerry, you might not hear not guilty . Well, i knew i was innocent. But youre putting your life into the hands of six people youve never met before. So its a scary process. People you never met, but obviously they know your last name. And your fathers legacy, your family. A part of the media coverage, how does that feel to you . Well, you know, thats sort of all on the outside. And i really didnt read any of the papers or look at the media during the trial because i wanted to have my head in the trial. But you know going in, again, these are people who dont know you personally but they know your family. And the legacy they think they do. Right. You know, i think what happened in my case is that i was innocent and they found me innocent because, number one, i was innocent, number two, i had competent counsel. And number three, i brought it to trial. And very few people in my position actually get to trial. Mostly they plea. And they plea often if theyre innocent to a crime they didnt commit. So its really coerced, you know, its a coerced confession to something they didnt do because they dont have access to competent counsel. Good representation. Right. And this was 20 months, a week off from work. I wasnt going to be fired from my job. And they take these pleas. Which can really have a devastating impact on their lives. It can harm them in trying to seek a job, in trying to get a loan from a bank, in trying to just rent an apartment. Its a really bad system. So much you do as your work, very important work as the president for rfk center for justice deals with exactly this. Affording people the opportunity to have their legal rights represented. So how much of this case highlighted the problems for you that still exist . Well, you know, you hear about this from an intellectual point of view. But then when youre in the midst of it, you get a much better appreciation for the struggle that so many people have. Just before we went on the show, we were talking about 75 of the people in jail in new york city are there because they cant make bail. They havent even had a hearing. They havent gone to trial. So, you know, theyre just accused, they havent been found guilty. And theyre sitting in jail because they cant make bail. So we really have to rethink our system of justice in the United States. And a lot of the focus on what you do is on migrant farm workers. You talk about the plight of that . Because its not something that gets a lot of attention here in the u. S. Well right now, for instance, in new york state, were working on a labor practices act. Farm workers in new york because of leftover jim crow laws have no right to a day off per week, have no right to overtime pay. Child labor is still legal here. And they can be fired just for forming a union. So i worked i met one farm worker who worked for ten years in the state of new york without a single day off. And thats legal. Once that chicken is roasted and comes off, then here we have. Whats the tip to browning it . I love how brown looks like were going to first brown it in the pan, right . And then throw it in a hot oven. And that gets crispy like that. And gets golden like that and take this left over sauce. And if its too thick, you add a little bit of water to it. And put like that. What we love to do is take this chicken, roast it like on a monday and then hey, move down, willie. Thats monday. Monday. Whats tuesday . Tuesday, you take your sauce, throw in a little bit of cream cheese, tortilla chips, chicken. Garnish with chips and avocados. Nice. And this. There we have the pasta, which we take some of the leftover sauce and chicken and, again, we take lots of black kale, garlic, saute in olive oil. Okay. Little toasted bread crumbs on top.
