KNTV Today March 30, 2014
Record books. After losing 26 games in a row, the 76ers managed to pull off a win and avoid a loss that would have given them a dubious place. Today march 30th, 2014. And welcome to today on this sunday morning. Im erica hill. Im lester holt. Congratulations to the 76ers. You would have thought they won a championship. They simply won the right to say theyre not the worst didnt have the worst losing streak in nba history. But what about the other team . How do you lose to the worst team . And a dubious honor. You didnt quite win. You didnt quite lose. It could be worse. It could always be worse. So you guys go. Take the day off. Exactly. Well you ponder that. We want to get on a serious note to the top story. That is a frustrating search by air and water for any clue as to what may have happened to that malaysian jetliner. It is possible the plane could be lost deep below the ocean surface, of course. And could it be there longer than anyone imagined . Kerry sanders is joining us with more. Reporter now a u. S. Navy official involved in the search going on basically in this area is saying publicly what a lot of people have been saying privately since then search began. Lacking evidence its possible the search for flight 370 could take quote, an intenable amount of time. With aircraft back in the search zone today, a race against time. The planes black boxes will likely only keep pinging for another week. The u. S. Navys pinger locater is now headed to the search zone. Once we do get a position with the locater, we will deploy this underwater vehicle here. Reporter back in kuala lumpur emotions boiled over. We want evidence chanted those relatives of the passengers. You must return our relatives no Strings Attached and hand us the murderer. The new search zone is about the size of new mexico. Where waves and currents are less severe than the previous search area. Even if debris is eventually located, 23 days into this mystery, tracing back the spot where the plane may have gone it has endless variables. We dont even know did it sink right away, did it float on the surface for awhile. Reporter the flight went into the ocean and a submarine like the abyss were to find it experts Say International maritime law does not apply. Aviation law established in 1944 determines which country is ultimately in charge of the investigation. If the airplane crashes on the high seas, the jurisdiction is with the state of registry of the aircraft nap is malaysia in this case. Reporter as costs mount, the question, when does this end . Theyll have to reevaluate the assets theyre using and what theyre doing in the next week or two. They cant allow this to go on because it will get so costly. Reporter the pingers on these socalled black boxes which are orange have seven or eight days left with this pinger. Interestingly the new regulations Going Forward next year will require batteries that last for 90 days which, of course would be useful now. Kerry sanders this morning. Thank you. More rain in the forecast today in Washington State which will not help the crews looking to recover victims from the debris of that massive mudslide. But there has been welcomed news as the days drag on. Miguel almaguer has been covering this since it happened. Whats the latest . Good morning. After learning the death toll has risen to 18 authorities discovered another body and not yet identified it. Finally good news here. The number of missing has dropped from 90 to 30. I want to show you what rescue teams have on the ground. They have been searching the debris field for more than a week now. Some 400 First Responders where these homes used to be looking for signs of any victims for any possible survivors which rescue teams now concede will be nearly impossible. Yesterday at 10 37 a. M. A very poignant moment in the search zone. First responders paused for a moment of silence to remember the victims and to remember those that survived this deadly mudslide. Its been a difficult time not just for those First Responders but for the volunteers who have also joined them in the debris field. This is a very emotional event for a lot of these people. We have family members digging for their loved ones alongside us. Reporter its been difficult for so many people not just in the search zone but also in the small communities up and down the area. There will be Church Services held today to remember the victims. Certainly another sad day here near oso, washington. Thank you very much. Could there possibly be a breakthrough when it comes to the crisis in ukraine . John kerry will meet with his russian counterpart. He was on his way home from saudi arabia when he redirected his plane hoping to find a solution to the crisis. Chuck todd joins us from meet the press. Good morning to you, erica. There are eyes around the world looking at this meeting set to happen. What is the thinking though . What is the hope of what can realistically come out of this . Well i guess the best that can be hoped for and the United States will never say this publicly, they let putin lock in his games here in crimea in exchange for him backing his troops off of the border of ukraine. That seems to be the back and forth here. There is some good news. President obama and putin seem to have a decent enough conversation that it led to this idea that kerry could change his plans, go to paris rather than come back to washington and meet with lavrov and see if they can come up with a diplomatic solution. Weve been down this road before. Right before the crimean referendum. Then in that phone call it was like two steps forward but three steps back because you had putin talk about moldova and making the same claims as in crimea. That he needs to protect russian citizens. Well see what happens today. Theres an inkling of hope something can happen today, but im not of mystic. Lets turn now domestically to obamacare the Affordable Care act. Monday is the deadline now essentially. Sort of. There are a few caveats there. Lets go with that to make life easy this morning. 6 Million People have now signed up. Public opinion is changing slightly. The numbers improving in terms of americans who approve of the Affordable Care act. Whats behind that change . Well i think its a slight sort of maybe some of its fatigue. I talked to some democrats. They think fatigue, debate fatigue about health care oddly helps them a little bit. While still the Republican Base gets so fired up about trying to get rid of health care trying to repeal it the fatigue on swing voters saying lets fix it we dont need to repeal it. But its not a galvanizing message for democrats. All is on the republican side. Its whats firing up their voters for the midterms. And thats whats frustrating the white house. Youre right. Theres a slight change in poll numbers, but its more of just passive acceptance. Its not enthusiastic. Chuck, nice to see you this morning. Well check with you later on to see whats coming up on meet the press. Sounds good. Lets get a check of top stories with jenna. We begin in california after a 4. 1 magnitude aftershock rattled the Los Angeles Area on saturday. It came after a 5. 1 magnitude earthquake shook the region friday night. The u. S. Geological survey said there had been more than 140 aftershocks and they may be felt for weeks to come. A big ncaa upset made for a hostile night on the university of arizona campus. 15 people arrested after arizonas 6463 overtime loss to wisconsin. They began throwing beer cans and fire crackers at officers. Officers fired pepper balls at the crowd. There were no serious injuries. Theres a new royal family photo captivating the world this morning. It features a rare glimpse of 8. 5monthold prince george. I bet that was one take. The duke and duchess of cambridge wanted to release the photo before their trip to australia. Cities across the globe dimmed lights to raise awareness about energy conservation. Chicago unrecognizable with its iconic willis tower in the dark. And here in new york city the bright lights of broadway were dimmed along with many of times squares big billboards. And they are the biggest losers no more. Saturday night the philadelphia 76ers snapped their 26game losing streak. If youre going to win, win big. They led by double digits in the first quarter. They put up 70 points by halftime. And eventually beat the detroit pistons. That means they are still tied with the Cleveland Cavaliers for the longest losing streak in nba history. This is what we talked about. I dont know whats worse. Not quite winners enough to brag or not quite losers enough to hold a record. Theyre sort of just tires, i guess. So the big question is congrats maybe . The win comes when we get to the draft, right . Yes. They will have the biggest chance to draft a great player for next year. Last night they celebrated as they should. Thanks. In health news Important Information for the millions of people who consume diet beverages. In other words, the drinks themselves may not be killers. Perhaps theyre drinking diet sodas to balance out other unhealthy habits. But the results are worth noting. Reporter on any given day, one in five americans will down a diet drink. But a new study says the women who drink the most may be more likely to develop Heart Disease, even die from it. Heather, were you surprised when he picked up the phone and called and called again . We were a little surprised. He asked if he could have our number so he could check up on her. Sleep in go pamper yourself at the spa, splurge on a pair of running shoes, whatever it is. Theres a way to celebrate without yanking yourself off course. Our 30 days together may be over but we dont want this path to a better you to stop there. Were going to be checking in once a month to see how its going. Send us your questions and ideas so we can get a better sense of how youre doing with all this. We didnt want to just do this we throw out and then leave. This is something weve all done. We wanted you guys to do that. Im not done. Ive got to get over that silly wall we had on the Obstacle Course yesterday. Ive been scaling that wall i didnt think that was silly. Ive been scaling that wall in my brain for the last 24 hours. You can make it happen. All right. Just ahead, dylan is putting the finishing touches on that yummy sunday brunch.
