Now the race is on to see whether either is connected to flight mh370s black boxes. Aircraft and ships this morning are being rushed to an area in the indian ocean with a chinese vessel reported to have twice detected a pulselike signal. This is an important and encouraging lead. Reporter after four weeks of fruitless searching, the hunt for the block boxes which may solve the mystery of what happened to the flight has become increasingly urgent. Their batteries last only about a month. The australian Search Agency warned today what it called speculation and unconfirmed results may put a lot of stress on the families on board that misses jet. I can imagine. Ian williams in australia for us this morning, thank you. Turning now to the high stakes rescue mission that is underway right now to get medical care to a 1yearold girl. Shes been sick for days stranded on her familys sailboat in the pacific. A navy ship is ready to bring lira and her family to safety. Miguel almaguer is following the latest. Reporter they are waiting for sunrise before that family can be brought aboard a u. S. Navy ship. The rescue mission currently underway at this very hour. The family nearly safe. This is the drama playing out in the high seas. New video showing a rescue team deploying into the open ocean to bring a 1yearold girl and her family to safety. Totally stoked. There you go. Reporter for eric and charlotte kaufman, it started as their dream trip. They planned to sail the world. Their kids, 3yearold cora and 1yearold lira along for the journey of a life time but the camera stopped rolling when they ran into trouble. After setting sail from san diego, the rebel heart lost power and steering. In rough waters, 900 nautical miles off the coast of mexico. A may day call. Lira was seriously ill. The California Air National Guard and the navy dispatched rescue teams. Take a navy s. E. A. L. , a paramedic, that is a pararescueman. Reporter after spotting the family in the middle of the ocean, crews plunged into the water and boarded the sailboat. Lira is safe. The kaufmans extended family relieved. Im glad theyre alive and my niece is being taken care of. Reporter this morning the kaufmans and little lira remain out at sea with four members of the rescue team aboard their boat. After reaching this navy rescue ship, theyll begin their journey home. But for now this high drama out at sea is still underwa i. The rescue team aboard the kaufmans sailboat is taking shifts to watch lira. Shes said to be in good condition. The family could be back home in san diego as early as monday. Erica . I can imagine theyre looking forward to that. Thanks. We have an update this morning on the backlash over a multimilliondollar mansion that the archbishop of atlanta calls home. The archbishop now says hes moving out and will sell that home that caused so much controversy within the church community. Ron allen has more for us. Reporter facing an uproar for moving into a 2. 2 million mansion, Atlanta Archbishop Wilton Gregory has already apologized. Now he has decided to move out to the spokesperson. Archbishop gregory feels this is the time to bring a close to this and move on. Reporter many of the faithful have been furious since he moved into the 6,000 square foot estate in one of atlantas nicest neighborhoods in january. Built in part with a gift from estate of nephew Margaret Mitchell who wrote gone with the wind. I think its offensive. When youre in religion and politics, youre held to a different level of accountability. Reporter some said he lived only in a part of the mansion. All you hear is how its all around the world and the country telling how hes done something wrong and he hasnt done anything wrong. Reporter but after consulting with advisers, gregory reversed course. Especially with pope francis setting a more humble tone. Focusing on church on the needs of the poor and living an austere lifestyle himself. No word on when the mansion goes on the market or at what price. The archbishop promising to invest the profit in the Catholic Community while finding a more modest place to call home. For today, ron allen, nbc news. Lets get a look now at the rest of the mornings top stories. Jenna has a roundup for us. Good morning. Hi, everyone. We begin in washington where private Memorial Services are being held today for two People Killed in the massive mudslide. The First Services were held friday for three of the victims. Reporter he also says he cant believe his son survived in afghanistan only to be shot and nearly killed at home. Mark potter, nbc news, ft. Hood, texas. President ial elections in afghanistan is being held this morning despite violence at some polling stations. About 7 million afghans turned out to vote. Polling hours had to be extended. Its expected to take about six weeks for results to come in. So take a look at these images from nasa. They show a solar flare. Flares are powerful bursts from the sun. In some cases they can disrupt communication signals. But as far as instagram goes, awesome. And finally, its hard to say what was crazier. Kentuckys dramatic win at saturday nights ncaa tournament or nothing. Because that win was crazy. So crazy that thousands of kentucky fans took to the streets for a little celebration time. Kentucky was trailing wisconsin by two points until Andrew Harrison passed the ball to his brother, aaron hearrison liftin them to the win. They will now face uconn for the championship monday night. Uconn had beaten topseeded florida earlier in the day. Coming up on monday nightor the huskies. The cons . Im from connecticut. I said huskies afterwards. I thought it was cute. Cute. I know theyre a husky. Lets stay out of this. Can i stay out of it with you . All right. Well move on. After more than a week delay, the Oscar Pistorius murder trial is set to resume this week. Pistorius could take the stand as early as tomorrow. He will try to convince the court it was an accident when he shot his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp to death. The trial has captivated south africa. Reporter the dump amputee olympian admitted the fired the shots that killed his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp last year. He says it was an accident. He thought he was shooting an intruder. But four prosecution witnesses testify they heard a heated argument between a man and a women before those shots rang out. After the first bit of shots, there was a female screaming for quite a period. And then just before the second shot, there was a male voice in between that you could definitely hear two different voices. And then the shot and then quiet. Reporter its not a whodunit. Its a why he did it. The evidence for why came from Reeva Steenkamp herself in Text Messages to pistorius in her cell phone. In four emotional messages before the shooting, she complained about her boyfriends jealousy and constant criticisms. And how you snap at me and how you were acting, i just want to love and be loved, be happy and make someone so happy. Maybe we cant do that for each other. Because right now i know you arent happy. And im certainly very unhappy and sad. Reporter pistorius is expected to testify. Audio only and not on camera as is his right. And the defense will say the vast majority of his text exchanges with steenkamp describe a relationship that was happy and loving right up to what his lawyer called the unfortunate date. Incoming message received, cant wait to see you. Would you like me to pick you up. Then outgoing response, i really cant wait to see you, boo. And another one from the deceased, i would love that, angel. Reporter Reeva Steenkamp cant speak anymore, but Oscar Pistorius can and its likely testimony that could determine whether he walks free or spends at least the next 25 years in prison. For today, mike taibbi, nbc news, pretoria, south africa. President obama is set to announce new executive actions this week surrounding equal pay for equal work. David gregory is moderator of meet the press. Good to see you. Good morning. The fact hes going to do executive actions, what does that say about what he thinks of congress . I heard a member of congress saying this gives the do Nothing Congress a bad name. Thats what hes up against. Theres not a lot of room to maneuver. He wants to take executive action in this case around pay and gender, equity in pay to try to send signals about his commitment on the economy and to groups like women especially. Getting those dedicated democratic groups out there motivated in this election year. I want to get your thoughts on the Supreme Court ruling of last week essentially allowing megadonors to donate to as many federal candidates as they want. My understanding, its a relatively small number of donors that can come up with that kind of cash nap said, are both parties going to take this money . Oh, yeah. I mean, youre never going to have a politician not take whats available to them. When president obama broke his pledge to stay within the confines of public financing, he said im not going to unilaterally disarm. Thats the mindset. He did a lot to set Campaign Finance reform back. The reality is what happens when you have politicians going to the wealthiest in the country saying we want unlimited amounts of money. Is corruption around the corner . I think thats the question of those on the Supreme Court are asking. And theres a lot of activists asking that very question. But we have a real debate here about free speech in terms of Campaign Contributions and putting limits on this. Lastly, the administration gave it a nine months time frame to get a deal done in the mideast. Hasnt happened yet. Where does that lead the administration . Is this latest effort dead . It certainly seems very close to that. Theres still time for this administration to keep the pressure on. Its certainly in a second term as you get into the back half of a second term. Most administrations will still tick to it, will try to get something going. But theyve had a real difficult time. And my own view, you know, talking about releasing Jonathan Pollard was a sign of desperation about how poorly the talks were going. Well find out whats coming up on meet the press later on. Thanks so much. Right now we want a check of the weather forecast. Weve got mike bettes of the Weather Channel in for dylan of weather. Good morning, everyone. Plenty of weather including thunderstorms across the south from dallas into atlanta. Were going to focus just around san antonio, storms around you. Houston will have showers today. All this moves its way eastbound and the south shares the wealth with the north as well. Well watch for chances for embedded tornadoes across mississippi. But notice this in monday. Very heavy rain across the ohio valley. Very heavy rain. Weve got flood watches across six different southern states. Heavy rain through d. C. , baltimore, and philadelphia as well. The heavy rain sticks around for your monday morning commute. Mild temperatures nationwide. Thats a look at good morning. 6 18 the time right now. Waking up to fogfree conditions. Its going to be much warmer than yesterday, starting off mild in the 40s and 50s. Late on this afternoon well find temperatures again reflecting that of summerlike temps.
