Good morning, guys. Beautiful morning here in washington. Ill tell you more about why im here later on. But weve got a lot to news to get to, matt. We certainly do. Lets begin with our top story on today. That tragic scene in california. A group of students involved in a deadly crash there. It happened on interstate 5 north of sacramento. Nbcs Miguel Almaguer has the latest on this. Miguel, good morning to you. Reporter matt, good morning. Nearly 40 students were involved coming here from Southern California to Northern California that were injured. Two are still in Critical Condition in the hospital. We now know at least ten people have died. This happened late last evening. These vehicles were traveling down interstate 5 late yesterday when the chp says there was a headon collision. A fedex big rig tractortrailer for unknown reasons, that tractortrailer crossed a Center Divide line and hit that bus head on. It was a fiery and horrific collision. Students told as they popped out of back windows, they scrambled for their lives as the bus exploded in that pieces. The remains are still being held on i5 as they work to reopen the highway. Investigators coming up from the ntsb to help look into the accident. As you mentioned, some 40 people have been injured. The death toll stands at ten. Two people are hospitalized at this facility. The investigation just beginning in the deadly crash. It will certainly take several days. Savannah, back to you in washington. Miguel almaguer, thank you. Earlier this morning, we talked to jonathan gutierrez. I asked him to describe what happened. Well, we were on the way to humboldt university. I personally was sleeping. I dont know the official story, but from what i heard, the driver in the fedex truck hit us and then we crashed. Can you take me back to the moments . What did you see . What did you hear . And what did you do . I was barely going to sleep, but i could still hear people. And then all of a sudden i heard people screaming and then when i woke up, thats when the impact hit. When the impact hit, i, like, flew from my seat to the seat in front of me and that caused the cut on my eyebrow. And then from there, i realized that we were in a bad cident and the entire aisle was full of smoke and thats when students were trying to escape the tour bus. And jonathan, i heard that you had to jump out of the bus, is that what happened . Yes. There was an emergency exit, but there was too many people in the bus that were trying to get out, so students that were there broke the windows and that helped a lot of us get out safely. Not safely, but get out of the bus. Yeah. It sounds like it was an awful, awful scene. What do you remember about what you saw when you landed, you looked around, was there fire . Was there smoke . And how quickly did the ambulances come . There was just fire in front of the bus with the fedex truck. There was people crossing the street to get to the other side with injuries. It was very, like, surreal moment. I couldnt believe it myself. But it was happening. And i think, like, ten minutes after the incident, the ambulance got there to help us. Well, youve been through so much. I know your dad came up from Southern California to come get you. What was it like when you saw him . You must have been so glad to see his face. Yes, i felt so relieved just to have him there, just to be able to, like, have someone to comfort me. Well, jonathan, thank you so much for talking to us this morning. Now to the resignation of a key member of the obama administration. Word came late on thursday that health and Human Services secretary Kathleen Sebelius is stepping down. Her time in that role highlighted by the troubled rollout of the president s Landmark Health care law. Nbcs chief White House Correspondent and political director chuck todd has more on this. Chuck, whats the impact . Reporter well, matt, its going to be interesting. Later this morning, the president will make it official confirming that he has accepted the resignation of Kathleen Sebelius, hhs secretary, and hell be replacing her with his budget director Sylvia Burwell. Of course, sebelius, after five years on the job, its been the end of whats been a rocky tenure. 400,000 additional americans have signed up, and we expect that number to continue to grow. Reporter that was Kathleen Sebelius on capitol hill thursday, giving her a chance to turn in her resignation on a high note. While sebelius says she was not pushed out and that shes leaving on her own terms, there have been hints for months that her job could be in jeopardy after the rocky rollout of healthcare. Gov. In our interview back in november, while the president praised sebelius for the insurance product, he did question some of her management decisions. I think shed be the first to admit that if we had to do it all over again, that there would have been a whole lot more questions that were asked in terms of how this thing is working. Reporter after that rollout, she became a regular target for critics in congress. Why arent you losing your insurance . Because im part of the federal employees why arent you in the exchange . Youre in charge of this law. Will you admit it will have a higher premium . No, i do not. Reporter in addition to the management issues, the white house also lost confidence in her ability to sell the product publicly. Senior aides were not happy with how she struggled in what should have been a friendly interview with jon stewart. Businesses dont get subsidies. So they get to delay because theyre not going to get any extra money, but individuals dont, because they will . Again, theyre in the market already. Let me ask you this. Am i a stupid man . Reporter after that episode, sebelius was only seen and rarely heard. The president didnt even praise her when he claimed victory on the launch of obamacare just last week. As for Sylvia Burwell, shes likely to get confirmed. Thats not going to be the hard part. The hard part for her is shes going to have a tough confirmation process because republicans are going to see an opportunity in an Election Year to launch, once again, a campaign against health care. Police investigators tell me they are still interviewing witnesses. Were here at forbes hospital where three students remain in Critical Condition. At a separate hospital in pittsburgh, the most severely wounded student, 17yearold jared boger, he is on life support. That the knife narrowly missed his heart and spine. A Community Still struggling to come to grips, an investigation still searching for answers. Sources close to the investigation tell nbc news at this time theres no evidence the suspect, 16yearold alex hribal, was the victim of bullying and no reason to believe he was targeting anyone in particular. Hribal faces attempted homicide charges. His attorney and parents met with him behind bars thursday. Hes upset. He knows hes in a world of stuff right now, and how serious it is, and he cant believe he did this, to tell you the truth. Reporter a former fbi profiler insists theres a significant difference between mass shooters and mass stabbers. For a stabber, its usually a lot more emotional. Its a lot more rageful. Its a lot more personal. Where a firearm allows you a real standoff capability, to be relatively unemotional. Reporter sophomore jeff la salle is healing at home. It just went in and out like that. Reporter moments after the attack, this lacrosse player was pulled into safety in a classroom by a teacher and another student. I thanked her so much that she was there, that she saved my life. Reporter this morning, brett hurt is finally home from the hospital. I didnt know what was going on. And the pain in my back, i realized something happened. Reporter the 16yearold sophomore was stabbed trying to protect his best friend, tracy evans, who stayed with him until help arrived. We were invited for their emotional reunion. Hribals Attorney Says he has hired a psychiatrist, matt, for a psychiatric evaluation to check out his mental state. Officials are revealing that latest signal detected in the indian ocean was not likely from the planes data recorders, but they are confident that crews are still looking in the right area. He refused to go that far, saying that he had no major breakthroughs to report. But they are still searching 1,500 miles northwest of where we are standing right now in perth, australia. The suspect wanted in wednesdays hitandrun crash at a Daycare Center is in custody. 28yearold Robert Corchado turned himself in thursday afternoon. Hes being held on 100,000 bond. Police say corchado hit another vehicle with his suv, which then sent it crashing into the Daycare Center. The crash killed a 4yearold girl and injured 11 children. 4yearold lily quintus was sitting at a table waiting for a snack at the time. Her mother describes her as beautiful, passionate and innocent. Some new details this morning following that dramatic rescue of a kidnapping victim in atlanta. Federal authorities are now saying a prison inmate used a smuggled mobile phone to direct the kidnappers. The victim, frank arthur janssen, is the father of a prosecutor who helped put that inmate away. Authorities said the kidnappers took a picture of janssen tied up in a chair and sent it to his wife and sent her a text message saying we will send mr. Janssen back to you in six boxes if she went to police. Five people were arrested following a late night raid wednesday by the fbis elite hostage rescue team. Hillary clinton had some luck on her side in las vegas thursday when a woman threw a shoe at her during a speech. Take a look. Matt, a group of chimpanzees decided to do exploring at the zoo yesterday sending zookeepers on a chimp hunt to bring them back. The zoo entered something called a code red lockdown for a few hours but staff said there were never any danger to visitors. A group of chimpanzees made a break for it thursday afternoon at the kansas city zoo. Around 4 00 p. M. One of the chimps broke off a 6foot tree limb in his enclosure and used it to scale the wall. We were like are they supposed to do that . Reporter the ring leader convinced six others to join him. Only two came along for the great escape. Chimps are so smart. They live in this social group. Hey, i found a way out. Come join me. Reporter Officials Say the chimps did not escape into a public area and no one was in harms way. I felt safe. We were pretty far away. Reporter as a precaution employees herded families in secure areas like bathrooms. They put us in the penguin exhibit. We had 40 people in there. Reporter after an hour and a half all chimps returned, lured to safety with malted milk balls. Reporter the primates will get the day off to think about what they did. Thats right. Savannah, well talk to you in a second. A tragic accident in california overnight involving a bus that was filled with High School Students. It was hit by a fedex truck that crossed the median, killing eight passengers and both drivers. The alleged hitandrun driver wanted in connection with a deadly accident at a Daycare Center in florida has now surrendered to police. The 28yearold is being held on a 100,000 bond. Well have more on that. But first, lets begin this halfhour with day three of the prosecutions crossexamination of Oscar Pistorius. And there are signs that its taking a toll on the olympic sprinter. Jeff rossen is outside the courthouse in pretoria. Jeff, good morning to you. Reporter hey, matt. Good morning to you. High drama in court today. The prosecutor, they call him the pit bull, caught Oscar Pistorius in several apparent mistakes, calling him a liar. At one point, the judge even stopped the trial to ask pistorius why hes making so many mistakes, and he was emotional again, too. The blade runner crying so much on the stand today, even that prosecutor grilling him said hes in distress. Dont be fooled by the speed, says Oscar Pistorius. His disability makes him an easy target for thieves. Testifying, hes been a victim of crime himself. Its a key element to pistoriuss defense, that his fear that night caused him to shoot and kill his model girlfriend reeva steenkamp. But in court today, a revelation on crossexamination. Did you ever go into a Police Station and complain about anything . No i did not, my lady. No burglaries or anything at your specific house . Thats correct, my lady. Reporter the night of the shooting, pistorius claims he didnt know reeva was in the bathroom when he heard a possible intruder, but he fired anyway. Why would you arm yourself, rush towards the danger if youre not ready to shoot. My lady, i didnt have time to think. I was dealt with a situation which i had to protect reeva and i had to protect myself. Its not that easy. You cannot tell the court i didnt think. You armed yourself and im sure you released the safety mechanism on your gun. Thats correct, my lady. The fact of this matter is, if you stayed in this room, reeva would have been alive. Those are the facts. My lady, if i stayed where i was, anything could have happened. Somebody should have shot reeva. I wanted to put as much distance as i could between reeva and what i perceived to be the danger. Reporter the prosecutor also caught pistorius changing his story about shutting off his alarm system after the shooting. Mr. Pistorius, that is the problem with evidence. You have to keep explaining. You are now in trouble, and now you just give an explanation thats nonsensical. Reporter you can see pistoriuss lawyer rubbing his head today as his client blamed the mistakes on a lack of sleep. Im going to be tired. I dont need time. I am tired. Its not going to change. Ive admitted to making a mistake. Reporter thats when the judge had enough, and for the first time actually addressed pistorius herself. Mr. Pistorius, its important that you should be all here when you are in that witness box. Do you understand that . I do, my lady. So if you are tired, and the reason youre making all these mistakes is because youre tired, you must say so. I understand, my lady. Reporter like so many other days, pistorius broke down on the stand when asked about the placement of a fan in his bedroom that night. Its a difficult time for me to remember. But why would this question make you emotional . Because this is the night that i lost a person i cared about. I dont know how people dont understand that. Reporter reevas family and friends are back in court today watching it all. In a new interview, reevas mother is opening up about how difficult this is to watch this trial up close every day. Take a listen. Im angry now when i hear the details of exactly what happened. Im angry now. Still forgiving, but im angry. Reporter that documentary airs on discovery i. D. This sunday at 9 00 p. In in country, we see prosecutors crossexaminatiprosr s crossexaming a witness all the time. It seems in south africa, prosecutors have much more leeway with what they can do and say. Hes allowed to outandout argue with Oscar Pistorius. Your version is a lie tell the truth that would not be acceptable here in the u. S. You have to ask a question. Is it that they just want to get under the witnesss skin and rile Oscar Pistorius up . Because some of the things hes saying seem to have nothing to do with the actual death of reeva steenkamp. Look, this is not tea with the queen. This is a murder trial. The prosecutor is allowed to be very aggressive. Hes trying to get any inconsistencies he can. And hes gotten some. Theres another thing thats getting some attention. While he is being crossexamined, and i mean for days, Oscar Pistorius is supposed to have no contact with his own defense attorneys. Whats the comparison there to the u. S. System . I like that rule, by the way. Because hes not supposed to get coached by his attorney to come back the next day and change his testimony. But at the time you need an attorney the most, youre allowed no contact with your attorney . You dont need an attorney when youre testifying. By the way, hes had over a year to prepare. He had a week off before he started testifying. He got to meet with his attorney then. Here in the u. S. , nobodys supposed to talk to you about your testimony while youre on the stand, including in the evenings during the break, but people do talk to their lawyers and because of the attorneyclient privilege, nobody can talk about it. How credible do you think Oscar Pistorius has been on the stand so far . I think the prosecutors got him on a couple of things. One is his minimizing his irresponsible behavior with guns. His insisting that reeva wasnt really afraid of him. And theyve got a text saying that she was. You talk about irresponsible behavior with guns. Youre referring to two previous incidents involving guns, and im curious, would those incidents be admissible under the u. S. System . I dont think they would. But thats because theres a jury, and we try to protect jurors from prior bad acts subject to a number of exceptions. But we want juries to decide the facts of this case and not look at prior acts. You say theres a jury here, theres no jury there. The judge decides. But with the assistance of two what are called assessors. What would their role be . Heres what a lot of people dont understand. These two assessors are professionals, an attorney and an academic. They vote on the facts alongside the judge. So theres three people so it is a jury of sorts, just not of his peers. And theyre professionals. If the two of them vote one way and the judge votes the other way, the 21 will prevail, majority will rule. So they have a little bit of power in that courtroom, too. Nearly 40 people traveling from Southern California here to Northern California were injured in this horrific accident. As you mentioned, dozens of people are still hospitalized and at least two are in Critical Condition at this facility alone. The death toll was now at 10. The ntsb is on scene to investigate what happened. The school bus, which was a charter bus, was headed from Southern California to Northern California to a local university when a tractor trailer, fedex tractor trailer, crossed a double divider and slammed into it headon. There were multiple injuries and, as i said, two people remain hospitalized. Celeste was at the finish line last april waiting for her sister carmen to complete her first marathon. Neither could anticipate how difficult that road ahead would be. Celestes daughter sydney was critically injured in the blast that ultimately took celestes legs. I can remember just about everything. The screaming, how it changed so quick from one second to the next. Celeste and sydney recovered together in a boston hospital room, recovery that still continues at home surrounded by family. Every single day since april 15th has been a postmarathon day. Were trying to get to our new normal. The road to recovery has been filled with incredible challenges and milestones for this family, who will never take another step for granted. The first time in my own house that i, with my legs on, climbed my staircase up to my bedroom, when i reached that top step, i was like, yes. Youve been saying that a lot to yourself lately. Yes. Yes. Carmen has been training again, and hoping to finish the race she wasnt able to. Celeste has been doing things shes never done before, like rock climbing. Yes woohoo and yes, she took up running for the first time after losing her legs and plans to be there at the finish line once again. I would love to be able to run on my feet, whether its 50 feet or 100 feet. When carmens coming around, join hands, and cross the finish line together. Carmen, for you to be able to finally do what you set out to do over a year ago, emotionally, what will that moment be like for you, do you think . I dont know. You know, take it one step at a time, one mile at a time. And then just really embrace how it feels to finally finish. That will be one of those yes moments. Were going to walk first, right . He plays a conservative character on his Comedy Central show the colbert report and he talked last night about the move to late night. This man has influenced every host who came after him, and even a few who came before him. Hes that good. And i gotta tell you, i do not envy whoever they try to put in that chair. So colberts deal is up at the end of this year. He actually had timed his contract with his agent to have it up when lettermans was up. He wanted this job, clearly. Colberts soon to be rival but really buddy jimmy fallon also joked about the new role in his monologue last night. Of course, i want to say congratulations to our pal Stephen Colbert, who will be taking over for David Letterman next year. [ applause ] very happy for that guy. Hes very funny. Hes a good friend. But that happens, coincidentally, right as theyre talking about the crime in the neighborhood. What was he saying, because you were listening and translating. He was saying he was talking to her, it doesnt frighten you being in this neighborhood . You know crime is such a problem. Shes like well, you know and right as shes responding the guy in front of the camera crews is what the reporter points out. And we have our camera there, were doing an interview, but it doesnt stop the people, these wouldbe robbers from trying to get away with it. When i lived in brazil, its still such a serious problem. You think about the olympics. World cup soccer. Big events coming up. Theyre going to have to be dealing with that a lot. When i lived in brazil, it was such a problem. I remember being on a cable car ride and the lady had what appeared to be gold hoop earrings. It didnt matter if they were really gold or not. A kid no older than 10 years old, grabbed the earrings and ripped them out of her ear. She had the ear lobe that was torn. Weve got to leave our hoop earrings at home. Even the wedding bands. Its like take off all the jewelry. But theyre cracking down. Theyre trying to do the best they can. But its going to be a very tough couple of months ahead with the world cup. This is riley rian, whos 3 years old. Aimsley is 4. It reads sometimes strength comes in knowing you are not alone. Riley just beat a form of stage 5 kidney cancer. Rian has been battling brain cancer for a year and a half. Aimsley is in remission from leukemia. In this other photo, shes touching rians head. It says, you seem my sister. Although we do not share the same blood, we share a bond that will last a lifetime. They were photographed by an oklahoma photographer laura scantling who said she wanted the photos to be inspirational and help raise awareness. You got me. You got me. Goosebumps. How beautiful. Tractors arrived to the area west of chico within the last hour to help move the bus out of that intersection. The road was closed both directions last night after the bus crashed headon into a big rig. Ten people died, including five High School Students. The students were traveling to Humboldt State university from Southern California to tour the campus when the big rig crossed into incoming traffic and hit the bus. Its unclear what caused the big rig to swerve. The southbound side of the freeway opened early this morning. The chp expects the northbound lanes to reopen about noon. The students were traveling to Humboldt State university from Southern California to tour the campus when that big rig crossed into oncoming traffic and hit the bus. I i had my sister as my bridesmaids and i loved her. Both times it was a small event, just my sister and another friend. Say one of your great friend or something from college is getting married but the wedding is going to be in capri, and you just know you cant afford to go to capri. Or florida or anywhere im just saying some place you would like to go, but the truth is you cant afford it, how would you deal with that . I think well, we had a Destination Wedding and i knew it was going to be a pain. So we offered to pay for everyones lodging and food and stuff, and as long as they could get there. The idea is, if you get there, well do the other stuff. You dropped some major cash. I did. And it apparently wasnt really worth it. I think sometimes you got to but i think it is fair i think it is very fair to say i would love to be there for you, it is such an honor to be asked, but i cant. Im going through this, this or this right now. And i dont know then if i would feel good about then somebody paying for me to go either. He said he or she has a relative and they want a specific gift for their birthday, there was somebody who actually emailed the link to the store so that the person could buy the present. But 17 and 18, you cant do that. You said you have to let them go at 10. You do. Thats the first separation when theyre starting to go through puberty. Not to let go completely, but back off boys at this point, here is this person i love and adore and were close and cozy and life is wonderful and they wake up and go, wait a minute, now im a guy and shes a girl and it is a little creepy. But you dont go cold turkey. So what is a mom to do . What is the right way to add some distance without cut ing off . The first thing they need to do is recognize how can we show our boys affection without being overbearing . And i think we need to do that, we dont do things in public, for instance. Dont run up to your son in the hallway at school and give him a hug and a kiss. In front of friends and everything give him an opportunity to find what decisions can he make, where hes going to succeed or fail. Dont make all the decisions for him. I think were doing them a favor and doing them such a disservice, arent we . Were not preparing them for real life where people tell them no all the time. I think it is really important with young men, even more so than with young daughters. I think we emotionally cripple our boys when we do too much for them. But those of us who are very intense mothers, we adore our kids, we do so much for them far into their 20s, and we need to let them stand on their own, fall on their face, fail and figure out how to get through life again. You say normally sons push their moms away too. At what point do they go away and then circle back . When is that going to happen . My son is just starting to like me again. Right around 15, it was like what happened to i think 15 to 25 can be horrible years. But those are the years you need to pull back. We have to have their back. Dont just throw them to all of their friends like to a pack of wolves, say do whatever you want to do. We always have their back and watch them carefully. We let them make decisions so they can fall and fail and learn to get back up. But usually in the mid20s, i say youre not done raising your child until about 25. Thats when you get what you wanted. The reward comes when their Brain Development is finally done at 25. And theyre men. And thats when your relationship really becomes not just a mother child, but more of a friendly relationship. My daddy used to say to me, honey, i love you too much to deny you the privilege of making mistakes. Exactly. Thank you so much. My mom was cool too but didnt say stuff like that. Lovely to meet you. Matzo ball soup to me. It is not just the passover seder. Im the mother of five. Every mom needs to know how to make chicken soup. Heel ha healing powers. Heals a broken heart. One is we have eggs, matzo meal. You start to roll that. The secret it a light and flavor matzo ball and seltzer and then oil. What you do is put that in the fridge, mix it up, drop it in. Beautiful.
