Says he played golf, gained 30 pounds, but its nice to hear those two names in the same sentence again, phelps and lochte, phelps and lochte. Headtohead the whole way, but were not going to tell you how it ends just yet. Youve got to hang on a little while. But first, we want to get to todays top story. Frightening moments for the crew of a Virgin Australia flight headed to bali. A passenger now under arrest after rushing the cockpit. Nbcs katy tur is in perth, australia, with the latest on this. Katy, good morning. Reporter good morning, matt. It was a flight from brisbane to bali, initially reported as a hijacking. And now were learning it was a severely intoxicated australian man. Drama in the air overnight when a 28yearold man rushed the cockpit of a 737 Virgin Australia plane traveling with 137 passengers onboard. The man reportedly made it to the locked cockpit door and began pounding and banging, trying to get to where the pilots were flying the plane. Pilots then broadcast this secret code to Ground Control of a possible hijacking. But before the man was able to get into the cockpit, the flight crew reportedly grabbed him and handcuffed him to a seat in the back of the plane. Authorities later said the man the flight from brisbane to bali landed safely with everyone onboard unharmed. The man was taken into custody where hes now being interrogated by indonesian officials. Now, Virgin Australia issued a statement saying the flight was at no time in any danger, and that the man was unarmed. To give you a little bit of context, its a National Holiday here today, and it could be the guy just got severely intoxicated before he got on the plane. Of course, though, it does not diminish how serious or how scary this situation was. Matt . Thats true. Katy tur in perth on this story for us this morning. Katy, thanks very much. Meantime, president obama arrived in south kors morning, the second stop of his asian tour. A country still reeling from last weeks tragic ferry disaster. Nbcs White House Correspondent Peter Alexander is in seoul. Peter, good morning. Reporter natalie, good morning to you. That ferry disaster is really being seen here and felt here like a national tragedy. Today, president obama expressed americas deepest sympathies to the people of south korea, with more than 300 people, many of them high school students, dead or missing. At south koreas president ial residence today, president obama led his hosts in a moment of silence. As a show of solidarity, president obama offered items of remembrance, the u. S. Flag that flew over the white house the day of the disaster, and a magnolia tree from the white house south lawn, a symbol of renewal to be planted at the high school that lost so many students. Im a father of two daughters. I can only imagine what the parents are going through at this point. Reporter this afternoon, president obama offered this new warning, if russia doesnt deescalate the crisis in ukraine. Is he going to use military force and the kind of destabilizing activities that weve seen so far . Thats a choice that hes going to have to make. But we shouldnt make the choice easy for him. Reporter earlier, he laid a wreath at south koreas national war memorial. In this region, the unpredictability of north koreas young dictator poses its own constant threat. Korean leaders warning the north could conduct another nuclear test to coincide with the president s visit. Kim jongun remains an enigma. Thats why these neverbeforeseen photos from kims childhood revealed by north korean state media just days ago drew so much attention. The images shown as crowds cheered at a nationally televised concert. Kim song min risked his life defecting from north korea 15 years ago. Now living in seoul, he runs an antinorth korea Radio Station and still secretly remains in contact with a network of dissidents trapped inside. Under kim jongun, life hasnt gotten any better, he told me. For many people there, its only gotten worse. They live their lives in fear. On that topic, president obama said north korea is not just a threat to this region, it is a threat to the u. S. As well. Tomorrow before heading to malaysia, president obama will get a briefing from officials here at a u. S. Military base. Meanwhile, were learning more this morning about a deadly attack at a hospital in afghanistan that claimed the lives of three americans. Nbcs keir simmons has more on that. Keir, good morning. Reporter hey, matt, good morning. Youre about to hear a statement that will leave you in awe of the woman who made it. The wife of a chicago doctor killed in afghanistan says she doesnt blame the people there or even the gunman himself. While his killing increases the fear that u. S. Forces leave afghanistan, the militants will turn on nonmilitary western targets. Dr. Jerry umanos spent nine years in afghanistan saving the lives of children. He worked in a nicu unit in kabul run by the Christian Charity c. U. R. E. He was shot dead thursday in his own hospital by policeman, thousands of miles from his family in chicago. Our family has suffered a great loss. Our family and friends have suffered a great loss. And our hearts are aching. Reporter they released these pictures of precious moments together. Dr. Umanos was killed with two american friends, yet his wife says they forgive. We dont hold any ill will towards afghanistan in general, or even the gunman who did this. Reporter in afghanistan, the innocent are increasingly targets. 2yearold abu shot four times, lost his parents during an attack on a hotel last month. Now even doctors caring for children are in the firing line, but they will not leave. This doesnt shake our resolve to continue to love the children of afghanistan. The children of afghanistan did not do this. Reporter his charity even says that after the attack, fellow medics stepped in and saved the life of the gunman who just killed their friend. The white house has condemned the attack. The u. S. Embassy in kabul described dr. Umanos as a humanitarian. But aside from all the politics, it just leaves you speechless. Heres a guy helping afghan families, saving newborn children, Training Afghans to do the same and he is shot dead while his incredible wife says they wont give up on afghanistan. Matt . Meanwhile, tamron is here with some troubling new developments in that ferry accident in south korea. Yes. Frustration is boiling over this morning for relatives of people still missing from the sunken south korean ferry. Also, new questions today on whether that boat was safe enough to be in the water at all. Nbcs bill neely has the latest. Reporter good morning, tamron. Investigators here now suspect that life rafts on the sunken ferry may not have worked properly. Evidence growing here that the ferry operators broke the rules and risked lives. The ferry sank with passengers trapped and life rafts unused. Only 2 of 46 were launched. Investigators have now seized its sister ship and found life rafts and escape chutes were faulty. They raided government offices, suspecting officials were bribed to pass both ships as safe. They suspect the captain lied, that the ship was overloaded with cargo, and that the steering was faulty. Do you think this ship was safe to sail . No. Reporter no . No. Reporter it was dangerous . Yes, yes, yes. Reporter this marine expert says loose cargo unbalanced the ship. The cargo was too heavy . And it was not secure . Right. I think so. Reporter anger is growing. Parents of the missing targeting naval officials. Why arent you finding our children more quickly, they asked . At sea, the grim search for bodies grinds on. Dozens of divers circling and entering the ship. More than 100 people still trapped inside. The operation here is focused entirely on recovering bodies. Its only when they salvage the ship, raise it up, that they can begin to prove what happened with the cargo and with the steering. But prosecutors are in little doubt that negligence on and off the ship cost hundreds their lives. As further evidence of that, it appears the Ferry Company didnt spend too much money training its crew. Last year it spent exactly 521. It didnt buy a lot of safety. Tamron . All right, bill, thank you. A frightening scene in Southern California when a school bus crashed near a golf course thursday. Officials say the bus drove off the road up a steep hillside and crashed into trees. The students, all seventh and eighth graders were coming from an after school activity. A dozen people were injured. The bus driver had to be pulled from the wreckage. He and two students were hospitalized with serious, but thankfully nonlife threatening injuries. It could be a big day for the future of college athletics. Northwestern University Football players will vote today whether to join a union. The National Labor Relations Board ruled the players are University Employees and therefore have the right to unionize. But the results of that vote may not be known for quite some time. The nlrb has agreed to hear an appeal from the university. The vote is likely to have huge ramification on how College Sports operate. New york yankees pitcher Michael Pineda will miss his next two starts after the league handed down a tengame suspension thursday. Pineda was ejected wednesday night after the umpire discovered he had pine tar on his neck. While commonly used by pitchers to improve their grip, it is against the rules. Peters square behind me can hold 80,000 people. But officials are expecting ten times that number to come here and witness history, because on sunday, the Catholic Church for the first time will canonize two popes together. All roads lead to rome for the worlds catholics. The script from chicago joining one million pilgrims expected to jam the streets around the vatican to see popes john xxiii and john ii made saints. Pope john opened the windows of the church to the world in 1962, convening the Second Vatican Council that modernized this ancient faith. He led the church for just five years. John paul ii served for 26, a major figure on the world stage, the pope from poland helped bring down communism. He was a charismatic leader with a more conservative approach to catholic doctrine. At his funeral in 2005, millions chanted sainthood now. Drowning out dissent. Voices of women, voices of sex abuse victims, voices of the more progressive folks in the church who felt they had gotten stomped on during the 26, almost 27 years of john paul iis papacy. Reporter his failure to respond to the sex abuse crisis has some saying john paul should not be made a saint. Cardinal donald wuerl of washington, d. C. Says sainthood does not mean perfection. Its a declaration that the person is a virtuous and holy person. Reporter the Historic Ceremony will be broadcast in 3d and followed on social media. It even has its own twitter handle. But for this group of catholics from brooklyn, there is nothing like being here. We are the only people who could bring people together, one bread, one body, one lord of all. Thats us. Reporter now, they will not only see two popes canonized, but they will also see two living popes. Pope francis will preside over the mass. Pope emeritus benedict is expected to attend. Its been a remarkable week when you consider that the vatican, last sunday was easter sunday, so obviously a big event for catholics. And now thousands and thousands expected to gather over this weekend. This is a big deal this weekend. Lets bring in vatican spokesman greg burke. Greg, good morning to you. Greg, can you hear me . Reporter good morning, matt, how are you . Im doing well, thanks. A lot of people are asking this is the fastest process to sainthood in the history of the Catholic Church for john paul ii . Why the rush . Why do it so quickly . Well, i mean, rush is an opinionated word there, because there are things that have actually happened faster. The pope can do whatever he wants. I think there are two important things here, matt. One is, its not a rush, but a number of people who wanted this. Pope benedict, we thought was one of the most conservative popes in the world until he resigned, of course. But obviously a very prudent man. Somebody who knew john paul ii for the better part and worked with him for the better part of 25 years. And hes the one who signed off on the normal fiveyear waiting thing. Fiveyear wait before a process actually starts. So benedict did that. I think thats one sign that we were pretty safe. The other is just the enormous outpouring of people coming for john pauls death. Thats part of the saintmaking process. Its not exactly a democratic process, but people do vote with their feet. When you go back and look now at john xxiii and the canonization of that pope, the normal procedure is two miracles are presented. With that pope, theres now been one miracle presented. I dont mean to make it an opinionated comment again, but, you know, why do away with the tradition there . Yeah, youre good on that. Thats one for pope francis to answer. But the pope essentially is allowed to do what he wants. John the 23rd has certainly been one of the most revered figures. Its often been done in the past as well, matt, so no controversy there. Its often been done in the past where a second miracle has been waived. Its waived all the time in the case of martyrs. I think its the immense popularity, the immense importance of john the 23rd for the church, and its also just an incredible sign of unity having the two popes together. The breaking news in East San Jose where Police Say Two robbery suspects believed to be armed and dangerous are holed up in a neighborhood. Happening right across the street from Robert Sanders elementary school. Lets get right to today in the bay chase cain. Police are going doortodoor looking for the suspects. Theyre searching backyards and telling people to stay inside their homes and keep their doors and windows locked. This is Rocky Mountain drive here near mt. Pleasant road. This is the area where they believe they have two suspects cornered. Men who they believe robbed two different 7eleven stores overnight and may have been trying to break into cars here in the neighborhood. Once an officer confronted one of the men, they, of course, took off running. So, thats why they have been searching this area trying to find these two men who, again, they do believe are dangerous. At this point, people in the neighborhood are not being allowed out of their homes to go to work. Police say theyre going to have to check with them and make sure its not someone that theyre looking for at this point. Officials say he tried to get into the cockpit, leading the pilot to declare an emergency. That man was taken into custody and the plane landed safely in bali. The officials investigating the cause of that ferry disaster in south korea are taking a closer look at the ships cargo. There was reportedly far more onboard than an inspector says the ship could safely handle. Theyre also trying to determine if the life rafts on that ship failed to work properly. And the underwater hunt for malaysia air flight 370 will soon expand beyond the current search area. A robotic submarine has now scanned 95 of that site, but has yet to discover any debris. Coming up, Michael Phelps runs into a familiar face during his first competitive final since returning to the pool, ryan lochte. Well hear from them. All right. Let us begin this halfhour are a nevada cattle rancher that became a hero to antigovernment conservatives for resisting an attempt to remove his cattle from federal land. Then he made some startling comments. And while some of his top supporters are now distancing themselves, that rancher is not backing down. Heres nbcs mike taibbi. Reporter clooichb bundy is not backing down, instead repeating his controversial comments. He became a hero to many anticonservatives. Its time to take the guns away from these bureaucrats. Reporter bundy called it a range war, and with hundreds of supporters coming to his aid, it seemed that way when government agents gave up in attempting to seize his cattle that has been grazing on federal lands, even though he owes more than a million in grazing fees and fines. I dont recognize the United States government as even existing. Reporter this week, the rights new darling talked about race. I want to tell you one more thing i know about the negros. Reporter comments gol viral about africans he says he saw outside a housing project. Are they better off as slaves picking cotton, having a family life and doing things, or are they better off under government subsidy . Reporter the fallout has been swift, the distance from hero to pariah traveled at the speed of the internet, starting with his major supporters. Senator rand paul called the comments racist and offensive. Nevada senator dean heller called them appalling. Even sean hannity, among several conservative fox news commentators, who championed bundys cause, expressed disgust. I believe those comments are downright racist. They are repugnant. Reporter keith rogers, whos followed bundys case for years, says the rancher has one logical move. I think cliven has to look inside himself and he might be a bigger man by saying im sorry. Reporter the dispute isnt over about grazing his cattle without paying fees, but bundys role as an unqualified antigovernment hero is disappearing fast. For today, mike taibbi, nbc news, los angeles. Lets make a turn, get a check of the weather from al. Weve got two systems that are going to cause a big problem. Were still talking about winter hanging on back through the rockies. Can you believe this . Weve got Winter Weather advisories, Winter Weather watches from california all the way to colorado. Over the weekend, this system is going to dump up to 12 inches of snow in the mountains of california. As you get into the rockies, six to nine inches of snow. But ahead of the system, weve got a lot of moisture and a lot of volatility, so weve got rain back through the rockies, but look on saturday, the risk of wind gusts of 70 miles per hour, tornados possible. And it gets even worse as we move on into sunday. The area of precipitation expands and look at the risk of Severe Weather, from omaha to houston, but the strong risk of Severe Weather really fires up around memphis on into parts of oklahoma. Were going to be looking at these showers and thunderstorms firing up and making for really, really strong storms, tornados possible right on into monday. Its a local Community Pool here in mesa, but there was olympicsized enthusiasm, as Michael Phelps dived into competition. And what a return. This guy takes 18 months off, swims like he hasnt missed a day, and yet there were a few potholes on the comeback road. Just like all those unforgettable races, Michael Phelps in lane four, his old rival ryan lochte in lane five. So we are off the block. Reporter it was phelps diving back into competition in the final of the 100 meter butterfly, lochte at his side stroke for stroke. Phelps swimming toward a comeback. Lochte and phelps neck and neck. Reporter at 28, with one preliminary win, this was a race phelps wanted. And its oh so close. And ryan lochte has just edged out Michael Phelps in the comeback. Reporter for the worlds most decorated olympian, out of the pool for 18 months i traveled, i played golf, i gained 30 pounds. Reporter it was his first meet since the 2012 london games, and phelps said he felt like a rookie. But to his fans, michael is back. Ive been waiting here for, like, about five hours. We came out from long beach, california. And just to see this. Reporter also back, that easy pool side camaraderie with lochte. Down there at the turn, i kind of peeked over and i saw him and i almost started smiling. Why, because you were ahead . As we saw in that tape spot, you were on a mission when it comes to mission. You want to make them look good, feel good, and look good in their own bodies, in their own skin. How as a man did you decide that this was going to be your mission . You know, ive always loved women. Ive always got on with women, and when i got older and started my career as a stylist, womens wear was the perfect choice. Dressing either models or singers or real people, i just found there was a correlation with everyone. Not every woman feels great about the way that they look. Using clothes as a tool to make someone feel better is one thing that teaching them to love themselves without those clothes is a completely different thing c. Thats a very uncomfortable thing for women to do, to peel back those layers literally. Why is it kind of important to get into the deeper issue thats troubling women . Because if you think about clothes, clothes are wonderful. I love fashion. Ive worked in fashion for a long, long time. But they just cover up whats there already. Youve got to learn to embrace whats there. Its not about loving your body. Its about accepting the parts of your body that you dont feel that comfortable with. Because every woman around the world, whether its you here in america or in the uk, womens bodies change constantly. So having a relationship with that and understanding what you look like in the mirror and accepting that will put you in such a much better place to accept who you are as a person. So when you do dress yourself and you walk high and the confidence is there, its real confidence. Its not confidence thats been masked with the latest designer bag or the best shoes or the sexiest dress. Its about the entire package and thats been my mission. I know you had a chance to work with some women in the u. S. Here yesterday. Well get to see that transformation next week. What was it like for them experiencing gok wan . It was incredible. Number one, we had a great day. Number two, they were all absolutely amazing. It was a really inspiring session. I learned a lot from those girls as well. Ive been doing this for a long time. But every time i meet a woman and we work together, you learn so much. I worked with one girl in particular, but we had a whole group of ladies as well. All groups of shapes and sizes. The whole point was to show one woman, bella, that every woman does feel the same. Parts of the body you accept, parts of the body you dont. Youll see next week exactly how she got on. So you show them, even though youre telling them to strip and get down to whats bothering them. But then you give them the garments, the right garments to put back on them to build them back up. Why are you then redoing like basically giving them a makeover if youre saying you have to love yourself . Because in the regular styling makeover, instead of it just being about the dress or the coat or the shirt, it is about stripping it all back. Working on the psychology, how we feel about bodies. So when you dress yourself afterwards, the clothes become an accessory. Effectively, you wear your clothes. Your clothes dont wear you. And thats always been my motto. Right. And it does work. Yes, with bella, it was all about the swimsuit. Because every woman out there is terrified. Hate the swimsuit. You dont have to be. Ladies home journal really set the standard for successful magazines when it was first published, but the announcement from Parent Company meredith that it will cease regular publication after 131 years makes it just the latest digital age casualty. Published for the first time in 1883, as the ladies home journal and practical housekeeper, it became the first u. S. Magazine to reach one million subscriptions, with its focus and popularity, the ladies home journal was the stop for anyone looking to connect with the american housewife. For over 130 years, ladies home journal has really been a goto place for women to find out everything for their homes, their lives, their wellbeing. Reporter during world war ii, the government relied on the journals pages to spread important wartime messages, like buy war bonds, and dont waste food. First ladies have graced the covers for generations. Not to mention quite a few of our colleagues. But its history is not without controversy. In the 70s, the magazine was the target of a famous sitin. Roughly 100 women accused the publication of being woefully behind the times. The magazine rebounded from the negative attention then, but today, the realities of the digital age have proven harder to overcome. Even with the relatively high circulation, 3. 2 million, ad sales are dropping in the double digits. Ladies home journal in particular reaches one of the oldest audiences. The median age of their readers is 57 and advertisers dont want to reach baby boomers. The journal will only appear quarterly on newsstands and online, making the monthly magazine that millions of women read for over a century officially a thing of the past. Just check it out. Carson, thank you. A new warning for parents up next with the measles cases surging at the fastest pace in nearly two decades. And then, coming up, weve got a Live Performance coming up on the plaza from naughty boy sam smith. But first, this is today on nbc. Were back now with the alarm being sounded by the centers for Disease Control over the measles. This year alone, 129 people have been infected in 13 states. Its the biggest outbrek to begin a year in nearly two decades and the cdc is now urging parents to vaccinate your children. Today contributor is an assistant professor of medicine at nyu langone medical center. Measles was eradicated in this country back in 2000. Here we have the biggest outbreak in a couple of decades. Is this the beginning of some kind of National Health crisis, or is it being blown out of proportion . Its definitely alarming. Lets look at the numbers. Before we had a widespread vaccination program, we were seeing 500,000 cases a year. Once vaccination became more widespread, it was about 60 cases a year. Now in the first four months this year, were already over 120. Those numbers are considered an outbreak or an epidemic. In california, 58 cases. New york, 26 infections. Washington state, 13. Some other states, texas, massachusetts, new jersey, and so on. 13 states. Do you see any pattern or any reason that jumps out at you when you look at those 13 states . Well, when you think about States New York and california, the population is bigger. But people that are traveling internationally tend to come to these places. And unfortunately, the more sort of sophisticated states are where some parents are thinking, maybe i dont need to vaccinate my child, which is a mistake. In california, of the 58 cases, 25 of those were people who had not been immunized. 19 of those werent immunized because of philosophical reasons. Let me read you something that william shafner, an Infectious Disease doctor said. He said the low rate of immunizations because of rumors and conspiracy theories and said that young parents today havent seen these diseases and they dont respect or fear them. Do you agree with that . I do agree with it. People dont think of these diseases as deadly, but they absolutely can be. Were talking about measles, muches, whooping cough. A resurgence of diseases that really should not be around anymore if people are doing the vaccines that they should be getting. Are young doctors trained to recognize the symptoms of these diseases, because they havent been around in a while . Its tough. We learn about it in medical school, but if you dont see something often, youre not going to be thinking about that first off when you see a patient. So this is a wakeup call for doctors and Training Programs to recognize these symptoms. Once youre infected with the virus, how quickly do these symptoms present themselves . Usually within seven to ten days. The symptoms are fever, runny nose, sore throat. Sounds like a typical cold and thats the problem here. But then several days later, youre going to develop that characteristic red splotchy rash. Starts in the face, goes through entire body and white spots in your mouth. The message from the cdc to parents is get your children vaccinated. Absolutely. Theres really no other reason for it. Doc, thanks very much. Coming up next, a touching story. They say that stephon lee and mario floyd shot can killed julie solomon last summer in oakland. We have studies to show all that too. So any mom who raised a girl and recognized a boy, you know you know, you try to do the same thing and theyre completely different people. What are the pitfalls that parents fall into when theyre raising sons . Things that they shouldnt be doing . Well, i think that in this day and age we parents, we tend to i know dr. Sax probably sees this too, we tend to what i call hyperparent. We focus on a lot of the superficial things. Make sure we build them a good resume, make sure get to the right soccer team, football team. But to get boys to develop a strong identity and character, every parent needs to be able to answer three questions in the boys. What do you believe about me, how do you feel about me, and what are your hopes for me . You cant answer the questions on a soccer field or classroom, but if parents spend enough time with their kids to answer those questions over the years, thats where you develop a really strong boy who knows who he is, and hes ready to launch. What do you think, dr. Sax . My big concern is that parents today are unsure about what to do with all the strains. Im seeing so many boys, what they want to do in their spare time is play video games. Sit down with the screen. And the parents are like all the kids are playing grand theft auto and it must be okay, it is not okay, it is your job to turn the device off. What does it do to kids in. It shifts them away from the real world to the Virtual World. Mom is like, hey, youre in tenth grade, your grades are going to be on your College Transcript and youre up at 2 00 in the morning playing grand theft auto. Doesnt that matter . He says no. Hes much more into being the first in his group to finish all the missions in grand theft auto. That matters more. Accomplishment in the Virtual World of the video game matters more. Thats so wild. So scary. There is another important thing that is spending so much screen time does for boys, not just video games, but even on internet. It is very isolating. And even though they say im on facebook, im connecting, theyre not. Theyre isolating from their parents. It is kids to develop a healthy sense of selfesteem need to read their parents, be with their parents, be mentored by their parents, mentored by people of an older generation. It is not just about, you know, sticking with your peers. Kids are very lonely. And electronics makes them lo s lone lonely. Arent they going to do what they want to do in some cases because they have ipads. They shouldnt have their own devices. They came out with guidelines saying no cell phones the parents should be in charge. You need to say, look, you need to prioritize the real world above the Virtual World, you need to be spending time with real people and turn off the devices, girls are going to bed with their cell phones on, texting at 2 00 in the morning. Boys are going to bed with devices, playing video games. Not getting good rest. No devices in the bedroom. Thats not just my opinion. When you look at colleges, and you see that a lot more girls are graduating college than boys what is happening there . Boys are dropping out. In the United States today, for white, black and latino boys, working hard to get an a instead of a b is not cool. It used to be in this country, but it no longer is. So across the United States, whether youre affluent, low income, urban, overall, boys dont want to be seen as a geek. I do think there is a subtle cultural message that were sort of dumbing boys down. Men, dads in particular, are stupid and we sort of throw dads into orbit around the family. All dads on television are stupid, little kids laugh every joke. I think it trickles down to boys. I think boys feel that maleness is not appealing, they dont know what to be, they dont know whether to be assertive, kind, compassionate, whatever. I think theyre very isolated, theyre very confused and were dumbing them down. We need to get to and parents really need a lot of them dont have a father in the home too.
