Can we put that video up again . All those people helping to push that train off that man. That could have been a horrifying story. It is really heartwarming. We will tell you about that in a little the while. We want to talk about the top story. The massive theft of 1. 2 billion user names and passwords from hundreds of thousands of websites. Pete williams is nbcs justice correspondent. Pete, 1. 2 billion user names and passwords. This is like the keys to the kingdom. Pete, good morning to you. Reporter matt, good morning. The simple answer to that is no. The company that discovered this is a Milwaukee Company called hold security. It is not naming the sites compromised, but its fair to assume it affected an enormous portion of the worlds websites when you consider its more than 1 billion user Name Password combinations. And the entire internet has Something Like 3 billion users even though many of us use as many different combinations for different sites. I read an article in the New York Times and it says many of these web sites and companies are still vulnerable. Have the websites been notified . Reporter some of them have, those that are the clients of this company. But were not going to know which these firms were. The company isnt saying which of its own clients were affected because of confidentiality agreements it has with them and it doesnt want to single the others out. But this is a reminder if we needed one that its best to assume that very little on the internet is secure. The bulk of the stolen data is not things like credit card numbers or names and home addresses. Its user name, password combinations, emails. All of which can be changed. So the experts say the best thing to do is assume the sites you visit have been affected and change your log in information even though that can be a big pain if you have a lot of them. Thanks, pete. Reporter this woman boarded a plane without a ticket. The same airport where the teenager stowed away in the wheel well of the plane. This cant happen. It happened again. Reporter but it did happen again. On monday, 62yearold Marilyn Hartman bypassed the document checkpoint at San Jose International airport finding a way to get onto a Southwest Airlines flight headed to los angeles without a ticket or a boarding pass. After the southwest plane landed at l. A. X. , the flight crew conducted a head count. Thats when they discovered hartman did not have a ticket. She was taken into custody by Airport Police and arrested. Certainly san jose has training issues that i think it needs to fix. Reporter turns out hartman has tried this before. At least six failed attempts at San Francisco International Airport in the past few months where she breached tsa security twice but never made it on board until now. Its the second major Security Breach at san joses airport this year. In april the airport made National Headlines when a 15yearold jumped a security fence and flew to hawaii in the wheel well of a plane. Surviving subzero temperatures during the fivehour flight. Usually they would not survive for hours on end up there. So it just boggles the mind. Reporter on tuesday, the tsa released a statement about the most recent incident saying the individual was screened along with the rest of the aircraft. The agency initiated minor modifications to the layout of the document checking area to prevent another incident like this one. Now, Southwest Airlines released a statement as well saying they are working with all relevant regulatory agencies and their number one priority is the safety and security of their customers and employees. As for hartman, she faces misdemeanor trespassing charges and bail was set at 500. Matt. Thank you, rehemma. Other big story were following this morning, we are now hearing from the family of the army twostar Major General who was killed in an insider attack in afghanistan. Major general Harold Greene was gunned down at a military base, the highest ranking u. S. Officer to be killed in a combat zone since vietnam. Nbcs Jim Miklaszewski has been following this story from the pentagon. Mik, good morning. Reporter good morning, matt. In his first 34 years as a soldier, this was general greenes first combat tour. His death sent shock waves through the army and the pentagon and a Strong Military family into mourning. Outside his home in virginia, general greenes family issued a statement through an army spokeswoman. They believe that the army as well as afghanistan and america has lost a true hero today. He really believed in what he was doing over there. Reporter general greenes mission was to train afghan soldiers, but it was one of those soldiers who shot and killed him. Greene led a group of american and Coalition Forces to this Afghan Military Academy Outside kabul. They were gathered in a courtyard inspecting a new water tank when an afghan soldier concealed in a nearby barracks opened fire with a machine gun. General greene was cut down and killed. Eight other americans were wounded. The assailant was killed by return fire. U. S. Helicopters flew in to retrieve the dead and wounded. Its a terrible day, terrible tragedy. We havent seen in the course of the last year. Reporter more than 100 american soldiers and marines have been killed by socalled insider attacks. Afghan soldiers turning their guns on americans. As American Forces withdraw from afghanistan, the number of attacks has declined. U. S. Military officials warn it will never be eliminated. If we leave 5,000, 10,000 u. S. Forces widely scattered across this gigantic dangerous country, we risk an escalation on insider attacks and abductions. Reporter as a twostar general, greene was a soldier and a scholar with three masters degrees and a ph. D. He was the highest ranking active duty soldier to be killed in a combat zone since vietnam. Greenes entire family has devoted their lives to the military and the army. His wife is a retired army colonel, a son, an active Duty Army Officer at ft. Sill. The u. S. This as Nancy Writebols two sons were waiting for her here in atlanta tremendously relieved when she got off that plane. One son saying he just needed to be with mom. This was the worlds first glimpse of Nancy Writebol as she was wheeled into an Isolation Unit on a stretcher encased in protective gear. Her husband david was watching on skype still in liberia. The head of the Relief Organization she works for came to be with her in atlanta. Nancy has arrived safely. Let me just take a pause here. And samaritans purse and s. I. M. Are so grateful. Reporter writebol is a personnel director, but when ebola hit, it was all hands on deck. She would spray down the hazmat suits doctors like kent brantly wore when they treated patients. Johnson says he doesnt know how either of them got sick. For her to be a stretcher is not an indication of where she is with ebola, its an indication she is very, very weak. Reporter a liberianamerican who died of ebola after flying to nigeria was not immediately quarantined and now more people who had contact with him have symptoms. And this morning were learning that a nurse who treated that man has died and one in saudi arabia suspected of ebola has passed away and a spanish priest is flown to spain and suspected of being treated for ebola. For the first time former taliban prisoner Bowe Bergdahl will be formally questioned by an army investigator today about his disappearance and eventual capture in afghanistan in back 2009. Sergeant bergdahl returns for regular duty here at ft. Sam houston last month assigned to a desk job. His lawyer says hes had no problems with any of his fellow soldiers. But today he will be grilled about his intentions the day he disappeared five years ago. These new pictures are the first public glimpses of sergeant Bowe Bergdahl since he was released from captivity in exchange for five taliban militants more than two months ago. I think its been a smooth transition for him particularly when you consider the fact not long ago he was living in unimaginable set of circumstances. Reporter today for the first time bergdahl will share his side of the story with Major General kenneth dahl, appointed to investigate bergdahls 2009 disappearance in afghanistan. I dont think he thinks of himself as a hero. Reporter eugene fidel is bergdahls attorney. At least some things people have said about my client have been unfair and outright false. Reporter did he desert . Thats a question were not going to get into because were not going to try the case on television. Reporter former sergeant and platoon mate josh horner told Savannah Bergdahl abandoned his post. He became disillusioned with everything. Reporter he now says he spoke by phone with general dahl last week. General dahl was very specific about my entire service history, about bergdahl and all of my interactions with him. Reporter military officials still dont believe bergdahls met with his parents though its hard to say for sure since hes been allowed to leave the base freely. If its true he hasnt, i find it extremely odd. Maybe says a lot about either him or his family or both. Reporter his attorney wont say whether bergdahl has met with his parents calling it a private matter. He did say bergdahl wants to get on with his life and perhaps go to college. No body was ever found. And within a few days, Egg Harbor Police issued this picture across new jersey saying they believe bittle staged an incident and that he is alive and well and on the run. Its about a Futuristic Society and you play a mom, which you are a mom obviously, but you play a mom to a young man who is kind of pushing the envelope a little bit. Yes, well, my role is interesting because shes not only the mother of this chosen boy to receive these memories, but shes also the keeper of the rules. And she, you know, thats her job in this reality. And so the way i approached it was kind of like all mothers when a child is leaving the nest. Theres a pain because theyre experiencing things that youve never experienced maybe. And theres a lot. So thats how i approach the character. And, you know, what i like about this movie is theres just such a contrast between this at mat reality and what jonas is experiencing. I love this battle between conformity and those who like to shake things up a little bit. Are you one who conforms or shake it up in life . In life im a risk taker. I love adventures and new things. You know, the parts in this movie that made me cry when i saw it were, you know, when jonas is experiencing those memories of the first time you go sledding and you feel snow and, you know, just wonderful human moments. That are all gone. Yeah. When you make a highprofile movie like this, its great. Its a double edged sword. You go out and promote it. That means you have to do interviews and people are curious about you. Do you think people have misconceptions about you when they meet you . Well, i dont know. Do you ever get that sense . When we talk about sex over 50, you already figured this out. You you have to appreciate that your bodies are not always going to cooperate. You can still gift but use your own account and put their name on it. This was an interesting one to me. A lot of the point systems you can buy other things. Youre saying its better to use them for real travel. Why . Its the best redemption ratio. If you are going to use them for an offbrand tv thats worth 200 and they ask you to redeem 50 noirng 50,000 points, thats bad. That should get you a minimum of penny per mile. Thats a good point per mile or dollar per mile formula . A good formula is penny per point or mile. All right. And then finally track the expiration dates. Thats right. So many people have expiration dates but they have no idea what they are. So i use something that i call reward wallet. Theyll notify you if your points are about toex pyre and if your points change. Its a great way to make sure they dont go to waste. And pay taxes and fees. They can add up. In some cases theyre 500, 700. Even if you have the points for taxes, dont do it. The ratio is terrible. So shes got to get through tsa somehow she got past security. And then get past the boarding gate. Unexplainable. She was taken into custody upon arrival. She had tried this before at San Franciscos airport six times. You would think that would put you on some kind of list like alert. This is a woman whos tried to breach security many times. But whats crazy as i mentioned this is the second time this happened at the san jose airport. You may recall we told you that story, that 15yearold who escaped security and flew to hawaii as a stowaway in the wheel well of a plane. He amazingly survived that flight. Heres the statement from the tsa. The agency has initiated minor modifications to the layout of the document checking area to prevent another incident like this one. Meanwhile, Southwest Airlines says theyre going to continue to work with all of the relevant agencies. Their priority number one, of course, is safety. And i couldnt believe this, but apparently this woman only is facing a misdemeanor trespassing charge but bail was only set at 500. Thats about a ticket. I dont know the state of mind and her health condition. With that said, she tried six times and to your point, al, you get through tsa which i dont know how that happened. You get through tsa, you get to the gate, you give them a ticket and it beeps or it doesnt. How does that i mean she didnt have a ticket to give them. You wonder if maybe its she had no boarding pass. Thats crazy. Maybe she got on the tarmac. We dont know the circumstances surrounding. Well find out more. Shes an assistant coach, but she is on that team and representing less than two months after winning the nba championships. Hes pretty honest. He describes the role with his wife and kids. Im on pace to fly 300,000 miles this year. During that travel i have missed a lot of family fun. More importantly i wasnt with our kids when our puppy was hit by a car, or when my son had minor and successful and of course unexpected surgery. And friends and colleague ask his wife how she balances her job and mother hood. But people dont ask him. He said the only way to get this balance was to step back from the job. Staying on as a vice chairman, so theres that. But i do think that men suffer this same guilt and the same stresses as women. But nobody ever asks that question. Right. Of course one day i want children of my own. I want to keep my job. And i have to admit i would be more likely to ask natalie how do you do it all than id ask you even though i know you face the same struggles. Women ask each other all the time. Guys dont talk about it. Id be wondering how natalie juggles. We have tons of mom guilt. But its to your point, guys and dads, i know my husband feels dad guilt. But as a guy youre expected to kind of suck it up and move forward. But its tough. Especially when youve got to travel. I admit ive been fortunate, with three children ive only missed one birthday. And you feel horrible about that. And they remind you. You remember when dad missed my tenth birthday. Sweetheart, youve had 15. Do you talk to your kids openly about, listen, ive got to go to london and cover a story. I remember my dad my dad was a bus driver. A lot of times he worked two shifts two put food on the table. She had two jobs. My mom would drop me off, another aunt would pick me up, and another aunt would help with my brother before my parents married. It takes a village. We should not feel guilty for the times we cant be there. They make you feel guilty. I was doing the weekend today show i had to travel to washington, d. C. Every week. Kids are going back to school, so look back on your goals. You may want to reevaluate them. Most peoples goals is paying off debt. So you want to get back on track with that. You talk about a technique, the debt snowball. What does that mean . Yes, the debt snowball. This is smallest to largest regardless of interest rate. Attack the smallest first. Once you do that, you have your monthly payments. How do you chip away at that . . That smallest debt you go crazy. Get an extra job, make sacrifices in your lifestyle. Cut the starbucks, going out to eat. Those are going to be worth it. Take every amount of cash you can. Then its going to roll. With the smallest paid off, it goes to the next. Keeps you motivated. Thats the key to the behavior change is keeping you motivated, changing that attitude. Because a lot of people say the highest interest credit cards or whatever first. But you say no. No. Because again, it is behavior change, less about math. If we were doing math, we wouldnt be in debt in the first place. Stay motivated. Its like being on a diet. You lose weight the first week, its like i can keep up with this. The small win is perfect. Everybody is different. About how long does it take to get the snowball going and finished off . Families are paying off all of their debt within 18 to 24 ho months. If youre making 35,000 a year and have a 50,000 student loan, itll take longer. While youre paying off debt, keep an eye on Emergency Funds in the event you lose a job. How much should you have in that Emergency Fund . You want to start a fund of about a thousand dollars. When youre debt free except for your house, then bump that starter fund up to three to six months of expenses. That puts you in a different position. If you can imagine having no payments in three to six months, theres a lot of freedom in that. What about saving for a vacation and all that . How do you budget for that . You want to make those priorities. If youre doing the debt snowball, youre not going on vacation. But put that in your budget. Say were going to pay x amount each month and save up for that. Cool. This morning on hope to it, one teens mission to find a cure for cancer. Shes raised more than 80,000 for Ovarian Cancer research with an idea that began when she was just 7 years old. And shes not done yet. 17yearold greer gates designed jewelry to make a statement. Not a fashion statement. Shes crafting to cure cancer. In 2002 greers close family friend nancy was diagnosed with Ovarian Cancer. Thats when she came up with the idea to form my jewels of hope. When i first started i didnt know what cancer was. I just knew nancy was sick and i kind of wanted to help her because she was one of my best friends. Greer was always the kid on the playground that would help the other little kids if someone was mean to them. And so when she came to me and said she wanted to do this for nancy, i was really touched. Reporter using a bead kit she got for christmas, 7yearold greer got a work making bracelets. The first year i made the goal to make a hundred and sell a hundred. And i sold 96. Reporter even nancy chipped in. We started having work parties at the house and nancy would call her friends and say greers making bracelets. Get your butts over here. And she would make all of her friends come and help. Reporter ten years later, greers charity has expanded. I have over 300 volunteers that help me throughout the year. Reporter her goal is to raise 100,000 by the time she graduates from high school. I always get asked where did the money go. I said it goes to cancer research. People asked why dont you keep any of it, i answered because i dont want it. I want there to be a cure for cancer because people shouldnt have to suffer from it anymore. The problem with Ovarian Cancer is its the most deadly of all of the cancers. Which is why the research being done here is really critical in offering women an opportunity to prevent this deadly cancer from arriving in the first place. Reporter nancy lost her battle with cancer four years ago, but her legacy still lives on in greers work. Nancy was a deep sea diver and she loved sea turtles because they overcome so many difficulties and they live such long lives. And so everything has a sea turtle on it. Reporter the mission is especially meaningful for nancys daughters. Truly is a legacy for nancy that shes still in peoples hearts and minds. We shouldnt really judge them. If hes going to cry hes going to cry. If hes going to laugh hes going to laugh. Whatever his emotional life is needs to be okay with his parents. We are people our kid comes to us to find out who they are, if were not letting them know theyre perfect as they are, theyre going to wonder what are they going to have to do to be good enough. Everything is balance. You spend a lot of time and you love him and he loves you. We have to refined them they are wonderful as they are. Wonderful but not perfect. Nobody is perfect. Just said that. We have to remind our children theyre perfect. They are perfect as they are in our imperfection we are just good enough. We are fine, particularly in the eyes of our parent. What about her point, she wants to raise a kid a tough kid. Whos strong and not one who cries at every turn and every how old is he . Hes 5. Oh. Yeah. There is a lot of bullying but we dont want to raise bullies. We want to raise kids, i believe, who understand that when someone bullies its their problem, not our problem. And we have to make them Strong Enough, how to deal with it, but we dont have to toughen up so that they are unable to respond to others who are also in need and who also have emotional responses. So we are physical beings and emotional and spirit actual beings and our parenting has to reflect that. What we didnt get to in the early part, you have two children, one of your children feels the other one is getting much more attention. Youre dealing with two kids. Quickly, tell us how you deal with that. I will say thankfully if anyone has more than one child you pray that theyre both not in crisis at the same time. Meaning that all children are going to have moments where one has greater needs and the other one has greater needs. How do you deal with it . As best as you can to find the balance and eek out enough time so both find equally loved. Particularly when children have extra needs or special needs, then very often thats kind of the identified child and the parents are focused on that child and all the money, the attention, the tutoring, all that goes there. Those other kids become invisible and they need to be attended to, they need to have special time. It wont be the same minute for minute but they need to have very special time. We have to get to scout one last time. Scout, i know you waited forever for this wonderful little simone and shes precious and its fantastic. One of the things that i would suggest you try and do is understand that she is not an extension of you. You are going to have god willing lots of time together. After suffering a heartbreaking loss donna decided to pursue her lifelong passion. Heres her story. For 18 years, i worked in the Tech Industry with three beautiful kids and a loving man in my life, i was successful and happy. When my company downsized i was offered a deal. At 51, i must starred up the coverage to leave my job not knowing what the future would bring. Secretly i thought, now i can write. I can finally use my creativity and follow my dream of becoming an author. But just a few months later, i ended up facing a nightmare. My 30yearold daughter leslie was diagnosed with stage four melanoma, but not the typical kind. The diagnosis was shocking because the cancer was found inside her. Even worse, leslie was pregnant and had to deliver the baby early. The next year, was filled with cancer treatments living in hospitals. I put my goal of writing fiction aside and spent all my time praying for a miracle. One year later, leslie died. For two months after she passed, i sat in my living room staring at the walls, numb to the pain of losing my child. Eventually, my younger daughter jennifer tried to cheer me up by suggesting i read the novel eat pray love and as cliche as it sounds i was inspired. I sat down at my computer, determined to write. Two and a half weeks later, i finished my book at age 52. When my first two novels were rejected by traditional publishers, i learned to selfpublish my book. Sure, i knew there was a possibility that my story with characters over 50 might not sell, but i always believed my fellow baby boomers would love them. Now, 27 books later, this is the best job ive ever had. Ive learned whatever that passion is thats living inside of you, just do it. It really is never too late. Thats fantastic. Pursuing Something Like this must have seemed so daunting. Everybody wants to be a writer. People say it all the time. Very few people wind up the way you do. Well, daunting, yes. It was daunting and it was a tremendous amount of work, as kathie lee is finding out with her endeavor, but it was also very rewarding. And possible. And possible. Absolutely possible. And as lot of people are watching this and they may have a dream just like her dream, but how do you even start . Whats the very first step for someone to take if theyre interested in putting a book out . Well, if youre interested the most important thing is really to have an idea, to feel your idea is something that either you know a lot about if youre writing nonfiction, something youre an expert in, or something that really comes from the heart. You really have to have passion when youre writing. Anything that youre writing, but especially fiction what donna is writing. Thats the first thing is to have your idea and just start fiddling with it on paper. No one edits for you . I hire an editor . You hire an editor. Interesting. I have editors, i have cover artists, i have you subcontract everything out except for the actual yes. Control it that way. People want to make a living can you make a living writing these books . Yes. Its possible to do that, it is possible to do that. I am living proof. Wow. Once you have your book and your stuff together, just finding like selling it, how did you even sell the book . Well, i was a little leery because ive been turned down by presses and so what i did was i took some inspiration from other people who had gone before me and i put a book up for free at the same time i put up one for sale. The free book led to the second book. You already had two. I finished, yeah. Youre not just pretty, youre smart too and resilient in everything. Very resilient. So inspiring. I cant tell you, wow.
