KNTV Today October 5, 2014

Early snow fall in the plains and waking up to bitterly cold temperatures. The secrets of studio 1 a. Were letting you behind the scenes tidbits. Weve got the good, bad, and ugly, today, sunday, october 5th, 2014. And welcome to today on this sunday morning. You are not ugly. I wanted to be very clear that i was not calling you ugly. Thank you. We got to talk about the scene there. I dont know why you are crawling on the floor . All will be revealed as we tell you about the secrets. I was a little concerned about the message there. I was fine. Were going to get to that a bit later on. We want to talk about the story everyone is talking about now. Ebola. Theres been a lot of late developments in the scare thats made its way to the u. S. Thomas eric duncan has now been down graded. His condition is critical. He came from liberia to dallas this morning. And dr. Rick sacre is back in the hospital. He has what appears to be a respiratory infection. Doctors do not believe it is a recurrence of ebola. On saturday a scare in the air, a man who had traveled to west africa began vomiting on a flight from brussels to newark. Passenger were forced to stay on board while medical workers tenned to him. Federal Health Officials say its not ebola. The nbc news cameraman who contracted ebola in liberia is coming back to the states today. Were also talking with dr. Nancy snyderman. Were going to talk to mark potter. By listing Thomas Eric Duncan in critical condition, authorities are saying now that his condition has worsened over what it was friday when he was said to be in serious condition. Family members in North Carolina said they have been told by medical authorities here in dallas that he is on both a ventilator and dialysis machine and being given experimental drugs. The family had been speaking to him by phone from tuesday through friday but when they tried again on saturday they were told that he can no longer speak because he had been intubated, but a medical source tells a dallas tv station that even though he is on life support, that the fact that he is young, age 42, means that there is some hope for his survival. Meantime the family of four that he had come here to visit, according to a local pastor, includes a woman he was to marry, has been moved to a gated community. Items from the apartment are being taken away for disposal. Health officials are monitoring 40 people who may have had contact with duncan. Another nine people who had known him for sure are being closely monitored and including the four family members, but so far none has shown any signs of ebola. Back to you. All right, mark potter. Thanks very much. Meantime, the nbc news freelance cameraman was diagnosed with ebola as we know. He is leaving the country today and headed back to the United States for treatment. Our National Correspondent is outside the Omaha Medical Center where he will be treated. Good morning. He will leave today on a specially equipped plane arriving here in nebraska tomorrow morning. This one of the places in the country with expertise in how to treat ebola. Inside, his bed is ready and waiting. The head of the biocontainment unit they learned from their recent treatment of another patient. We are leerng about it as we go. We have all the special equipment that we can bring in here to deal with somebody in an Isolation Unit and the results in the u. S. Have been better than in africa. Venttle and nbc spoke to the camera this morning and said hes in great spirits. He worked on this story on tuesday to work with dr. Nancys team. Thursday, he tested positive for ebolaful because they were near him, dr. Nancy and others on the nbc team are taking their temperatures three to four times a day. They are all feeling fine but are under selfquarantine just in case. My suspicion he was infected before we met him. He may have been infected when he was helping ebola. He was helping folks spraying down a car. He wrote this on his Facebook Page. Man oh, man i have seen some bad things in the last two weeks of my life. How unpredictable and fraught with danger life can be. His parents say he was committed. He wanted to go back and write about it and film about the impact that the ebola epidemic and decided to risk his health and see if he can make a difference. His dad tells me that the family will arrive here later tonight. Meantime, he is 33 years old and healthy and robust, so doctors say he has a very good chance of being able to fight off this deadly disease. That is a very good thing to here. We want to point out tonight on nbc nightly news that kate will walk us through the biocontainment unit where he is being treated. Dr. Thom freeden is the director for centers for Disease Control. Is that a typical progression of ebola . Would you expect a patient to get worse before they get better . Were very concerned about his elingt. Ebola can be a very severe disease and thats why its so scary because unfortunately even with the best of care, a large proportion of patients may die so were really praying for his improvement. Can fight the infection. You pointed out this disease can be fatal. We have seen that in africa. To this point, all treated in this country have survived. That speaks to the american medical system. Do you expect as this goes on, well lose folks here . Time will tell. We certainly hope every person is proetected and every person that gets it recovers. It is a severe disease. Even though the best care is given, sometimes it the outcome is not what we wish it would be. How rapid is your learning curve on this disease in terms of treating in this country . One patient was given blood from dr. Kent brantley, antibodies. Are you still experimenting with treatment . Well the key is that this is why its so challenging in africa. Even six balancing the fluids in somebody is quite hard. You have to measure them, and tie traiting them to the right level. Its a very severe infection. Thats why were so careful. Thats bhie we make sure we can stop it in its tracks. Thanks for coming up this morning. Thank you. With here, heres erica. Todd is moderator of meet the press. Good morning. Good morning, erica. As we are talking about this ebola crisis which has gripped a lot of people. I noticed a tweet you sent out yesterday. You are convinced the public concern about ebola is the issue of the trust in government. Is there something that something that health gses are working on as well as the policies and procedures they have in place . I think they are finally thinking and working on it over the last few days. On friday, the administration did what they call a fullcourt press. They had heads of different agencies come out and talk about everything they are doing about ebola here in the United States and africa. The except tix thats out there about whether government is really on top of this, can they really trust that the cdc knows what its doing and stop it, you understand about the scem six skepticism, the secret service blunders, and three or four other, here at a memo, the government is trying desperately to stop a panic, because theres more panic than actual potential for this virus to cause problems here in the United States because of that erosion of trust, i think the government is having a harder time stopping the panic. You mentioned the secret service. The new interim head of the secret service is coming in and his job is to clean up the crisis that is there. You saw a number of different in your years of the white house, a number of different administrations to go through. Different heads of secret is service. Did you see any changes at all in that branch, in that body . What ive seen over the years is frankly an agency that is spread very thin. When you think about all of the different travel that now takes place with the president in the post 9 11 world, all of the extra security procedures that come into play. We live in a polarized comment, theres more social media threats that the is he kret service investigates. They are overwork and they seem thin in their ranks because maybe they have to send an advance team in new york because of u. N. World leaders at the same time. That does what ive noticed is that maybe the secret service hasnt caught up to some of the issues that they have to deal with now in this 21st century environment. Well see what happens as they start that new under the new director. Well check in with you on the new set. Ive got the new car smell out here. If only if we had smell0vision. We begin with the developing story in japan. One u. S. Airman is reported dead and two others missing from a u. S. Air base off the coast of okinawa as a powerful typhoon turns toward tokyo. They were washed out to sea while taking photos. A fierce battle with islamic militants erupted this morning north of baghdad. Eyewitnesses say iraqi forces have completely recaptured a town. We have nor more control over the u. S. Government than you have over the breaking of dawn. We implore his captors to show mercy and use their mother to let our son go. In hong kong, the clock is tick ticking toward a government ultimate malt up to clear the speeds. Police clashed with demonstrators. The government warns it will take all necessary action to restore social order. Authorities in virginia are asking hunters to join the search for a missing 18yearold uva student. She was last seen on september 13th. On saturday her mother delivered a plea for help. Somebody listening to me today either knows where hannah is or knows someone who has that information. We appeal to you to come forward and tell us where hannah can be found. Authorities have charged 32yearold jesse leroy matthew, jr, in connection with her disappearance and forensic evidence also connects him with a 2009 death of a v Virginia Tech student. A fouryearold who died of the enter virus. We have more. The virus who has sickened children in 43 states has been linked to the death of a fouryearold. The centers for Disease Control is now working to determine if entero virus number 48 may have also played a role in other deaths address well. With cold and flulike symptoms the virus is not a new illness but this strand is making victims severely sick. The cdc is indicating that it caused paralysis in nine children. Its the worse thing to see your child not be able to breathe. Its devastating. Most children fully recover but parents should exercise caution. Anything that looks like an asthma attack or difficulty breelingting, please get medical attention. Doctors warn take no chances with a virus has often beat. Gone girl became a best seller when the book was released in 2012. Oscar winner ben affleck has helped bring it to the box office in one of his most anticipated movies of the year. Take a look. I dont see you sitting quietly. Is that him . Ironic hip administer. I prefer men who are funny. Not funny. What type are you . Corn fed, missouri guy. Cute. Native new yorker. World ends at the hudson. Whats your name . Amy. Ben affleck, great to have you here. Thanks very much. I did not read the book. I told people i was at the screening, and they said how is ben affleck . They have a clear picture of what they want nick to be. Im seeing people have preconceived roles of how they want him to be. When you do this, something where millions read the book or mocking jay or 50 shades of gray. Cultural phenomenons. Peoples imaginations have already established the characters. People are leaning back going thats not in the book, thats not how that happened. You have to accept thats part of the exchange. The author of the book went on to do the screen play. Im watching the screen going ripped from the headlines. Ive sat here many times doing the story about the so called grieving husband that later turns out to be the killer. I wonder what its like being that part. The guy that has to publicly grieve, puts on the right face, everyone is suspicion of him. Its role playing. Role playing in marriages where the husband is expected to be like this. The wife is expected to be like this. Public role play where were expected to behave a certain way. Then theres an added layer. I dont seem to be grieving t f enough, so the media decides i must be the killer. Thats like real life. People go, he didnt grief enough. His cry sounded fake. People are racing to get coverage. Internet makes it faster picking up what the last people wrote. Even before the internet, Richard Jewel got his life screwed up because people convicted him early. Its the tragedy murder attention that happens on cable news where you need an update every 15 seconds. Its a tricky thing for us to try to manage. David fincher comes to you and offers you a role. You look at thele calendar and realize you are directing your own film. How did you handle that . Despite the fact it wasnt sunshine and smiles everyday with this movie. Theres dark stuff in here. David is interesting. I knew as a performer, ive have the chance to pick up new trix. We mentioned you have roles under scrutiny. Youre shooting batman now. First of all, are you getting good points at home with kids . I have two older girls and one younger boy. Hes just figuring out what batman is about. If i was in frozen, i would be king of the world. If i was elsa thats not the case. People said i was too old to play the part. Ive had people come up hugely enthusiastic. I think both reactions are pretty irrelevant. At the end of the day, you do your job or dont. You come out to a movie people like. If they dont, you got the role any way. Great having you here. Thanks. Its been ring ring progresso you soup people have my kids loving vegetables. Well vegetables. Shh taste better in our savory broth. Vegetables . No. Soup oh soup loaded with vegetables. You grew to love her on dramas like greys anatomy and private practice. Now shes back on bad judge she plays judge by day and wild party girl by night. Are you serious . What am i supposed to do with that . Be glad its negative. Please be seated. Do it quietly. Ive got a headache. Rough might the night before. Youre in better shape than she is this morning. Thats a good thing. Just barely. Im kidding. Where did you do more research, a bar or courtroom . Actually i did follow a judge around in la for a day. She was amazing. To see actually the real life between what shes like this court and after she takes the robe off. She was literally wearing a tiger print wrap dress. She was a cat. Were there shades of that in bad judge . Absolutely. Identifying with what youre like at work as opposed to what youre like when dont have to be around people. She says what she wants all the time any way. Its duality people like to see. People know you in a more serious role. Comedy is where your roots are. Thats where i started impromptu in chicago. I met adam and after that will ferrell. Its fun getting back to comedy. Whats it like not only to have them involved but be in this executive producer role for yourself . Does hit give you more control . Yeah, and i love control. I love it because as an actor i approach a role and get as specific as i want to be from character history, wardrobe, hair, makeup, the look, where did she live and all. That as ep ive been able to do that on a bigger level. What kind of car does she drive . Its been in casting so its been fabulous to have my hands in it from the ground up. You mentioned your start in improp . How much is in this show . We have amazing writers. It was important for us to make a comedy thats laugh out loud funny. Its so subjective, theres lots of humor. We wanted to get et surprises and belly laughs in 22 minutes. You have some. Is there anything you think this character would not do . I think anything is possible with her. Thats part of the fun is that theres a fantasy element to it. She says everything everybody wants to say but cant. I dont know if anything is beyond the bounds of rebecca. I think she would never not take a case seriously. Yeah. Great to have you here. Good luck with everything. Thanks so much. Thank you. Catch bad judge thursdays at 9 00 800 central on nbc.
