The judge handing down her decision overnight. Today jeff rosin has covered this case from the very beginning. Jeff, good morning to you. After all of the witnesses, the talk and the arguments, Oscar Pistorius is going to jail. Sentenced to five years. The judge saying yes, pistorius is a firsttime offender, yes hes involved with childrens dharties but when he shot and killed his girlfriend he was negligent, firing that gun four times into the bathroom knowing someone was there, aggravating circumstances forcing jail time. Oscar pistorius stoic walking into court this morning. From the very start it didnt look good for him. It would be a sad day for this country if an impression were to be created that there was one law for the poor and disadvantaged and another for the rich and famous. Then the moment of truth. Mr. Pistorius, please rise. The following is what i consider to be a sentence that is first. The sentence is imposed is the maximum imprisonment of five years. Five years in prison for shooting and killing his girlfriend reeva steenkamp. Guards immediately escorting him downstairs to a holding cell to be fingerprinted. Minutes later he watched as hes load into this police van in custody. Given the fact that oscar was convicted of culpable homicide, i think this is a just and fair sentence. Sentenced five years in prison. But he only needs to serve a minimum of ten months after which he can be placed in house arrest. After the sentencing, oscars uncle speaking with reporters. The court has now handed down judgment and sentence and we accept the judgment. Oscar will embrace this opportunity to pay back to society. And of course there are rivas parents, in court this morning watching it all, the judge calling their daughter vivacious and full of life hoping the sentence provides closure. Doesnt matter. Hes going to pay something. Do you think justice has been served . Yes. Its been a long journey for you. Are you happy . Are you satisfied . We are satisfied. You heard oscars uncle saying that they accept the judgment but this may not be over yet. Prosecutors could still appeal the verdict itself. Remember theyre angry he wasnt convicted of murder, just manslaughter. Here in america they cant appeal verdicts but in south africa they can. They say theyre Still Deciding what to do. By the way, either way as part of the sentence because of a firearms charge, theyve deemed him unfit to have weapons. He has to hand them over. The cdc is issuing new guidelines when it comes to the treatment of ebola in the wake of those two dallas nurses who contracted the virus. Responding from an outcry from health care worker, the centers for Disease Control issued new guidelines late monday for the protective gear intended to keep them safe. Because of the lessons learned, the cdc said it was implements three new recommendations, making sure that Health Care Workers are repeatedly trained, especially when it comes to using the protective treatment, no schwikin exposed and have a manager monitoring the use of the gear.
