The ice covering the streets caused hundreds of accidents across the state and sadly was responsible for at least two deaths. Now, parts of the rockies and midwest are covered with a foot of snow. Its early november. All this snow is going to melt away quickly, right . Not quite. These subfreezing temperatures are going to stick around for a long long time. Much of the nations midsection is already frozen with minnesota getting the worst of it monday. Go back, straighten the wheels a little bit. Reporter a semitruck stranded, and jackknifed off a highway and Police Reporting accidents statewide. South of minneapolis, entire neighborhoods blanket by snow, but some School Districts remained open. Parts of wisconsin were slammed by up to 18 inches of snow monday, more expected today. In south dakota, snow plows ruled the roads as residents dusted off their shovels with scrapers. For me, its a little early but theres not much we can do. Reporter as the storm moved east overnight, parts of michigan pummeled with heavy snow, more than a foot expected before its over. With nonstop snow and prethanksgiving polar vortex, people across the country are wondering if this winter could be just as brutal as last years that saw record temperatures and snowfall totals across the midwest. Has fallen in multiple cities, six weeks before the official start of winter. Eventually, the snow will stop falling but temperatures sure wont. In fact, we should bottom out down in the Single Digits and beyond tonight. Afternoon high temperatures will not get above freezing for at least two weeks. By wednesday look at these temperatures, feeling like 34 in san antonio. Huntsville, 19 in chicago. Gets even worse as we get on to thursday. Kansas city, feels like 12. Denver, 4 below. By friday, that chill stretch from boston where it will feel like 31, down to atlanta, 21. Houston feels like 36 degrees. This cold air will be in place and be reinforced for at least two weeks. Dr. Craig spencer became infected while in guinea but his symptoms developed only when he returned to new york city. National correspondent kate snow is in Bellevue Hospital this morning. Good morning. Reporter savannah, good morning. This is the first time in months no one in america is being treated for ebola. We will expect to hear from dr. Craig spencer shortly and make a statement at the hospital and head home ebolafree. Its been 19 days since an ambulance delivered dr. Craig spencer to the hospital, another example of american medical care beating this deadly disease with the help of blood donated by a survivor. Im happy to give dr. Spencer plasma that he needs. Reporter today, the hospital says dr. Spencer poses no Public Health risk a stark contrast to the fear when he was first diagnosed. They should stay home. You analyze what his legacy might be and in the foreseeable future, a president whose potential wasnt realized. He came to washington promising to change the political divide and change the discourse. Was that his biggest failure . He was the guy at the 2004 convention and said he would stop this divide 24 years of red versus blue. He will admit some day thats his greatest disappointment. Thats what this book about, the struggles to change washington. Did he go with washington more than change it . We begin this morning with a fight against isis and the syrian town at the center of the battle is kobani. Richard angel has seen the fighting firsthand and joins us now from the turkish border. The militants are determined to take the city yet its Still Holding on and we finally managed to get into kobani. The center of kobani is no more. A ghostly testament to the price this syrian town is paying for standing up to isis. But the town isnt abandoned. Its kurdish people, men and women, have taken up arms and have been holding out for two months. They run through intersections to avoid enemy snipers or stay off the dangerous streets by toneling through walls. 34 years old, one of the top field commanders. Many of the front line fighters here are women. They say the islamic fanatics from isis are afraid to be killed by a women, a dishonor the militants believe could cost them a spot in paradise. She doesnt believe that. They are afraid because of our conviction and our strength, she says, our female comrades arent scared of isis. She took us to kobani city hall, now a front line position. She says there were about 40 isis fighters just in these rooms here. Not that theyre fighting between buildings and across streets, but room to room. An ear, nose and throat doctor performing the procedure did not actually have privileges to work at the clinic, while another member of the team took cell phone photos of rivers after she was sedated. Levels of the drug propofol, used for sedation, were inconsistently recorded, and riverss weight, which could have been a guide for how much propofol to use, was never measured. The report conducted by the department of health and Human Services says doctors failed to react fast enough to a drop in vital signs. At least 15 minutes later, the comedienne went into cardiac arrest. There were two kind of conflicting reports about when she actually went into cardiopulmonary arrest. Today contributing correspondent jenna bush hager. Good morning. Hi, guys, good morning. Those who know my grandfather know how humble he is. Hes never even written a president ial memoir. So, now my dad is telling this story and he calls it a love story. I recently had a privilege to shoot a conversation with the two of them. First and foremost, he was a great father. It is the part of a president s story best told by his son. Youre a man who had enormous success in life, but those successes were meager compared to the success of being, you know, a fabulous husband and great father. With a glimpse into the life of my grandfather, beyond the world stage and what the public knows of him. Before he entered politics, he and my grandmother were busy raising their kids. Dad, growing up, what type of father was gampy . Well, he set the boundaries, but he was never one that tried to impose his will on us. Because of the way he raised all of us, we admired him greatly. So when you were raising your kids, what type of things did you want for them . I wanted all the best. I wanted them to feel there were no horizons, you could reach for the stars, accomplish stuff. And sure enough, they have. And history will tell that story. My father had a frontrow seat working throughout my grandfathers campaign. So help me, god. He says now the hardest part of politics is watching the spotlight shine harshly on those you love. Dad, when you watched as he was a president and you would turn on the television to hear critics talk about him. Yeah. It made me angry. And i wasnt disciplined enough not to watch television. When i became president , i was disciplined enough to ignore all the noise, but when he was president and people criticized him, i didnt like it. But actually, it helped thicken my hide for when i became president , because criticism of my dad was a heck of a lot more difficult for me to handle than criticism of me. What about you, though, gamps, when you heard people . Same thing. I did not like it. I knew by then that it goes with the territory, but when its your own son, its hard to take. Dad, when in 1992, when gampy lost yeah. It was an unhappy moment. It took an extraordinary series of events to defeat him, though, but we all, of course, fed off of his graciousness in defeat. It is a lesson in grace and fortitude. It didnt work out quite the way we wanted. My grandfather has never been bitter, never resentful. And years later, a most unlikely friendship developed. Bill clinton used dad as a father figure, which is one of the great ironies, not ironies, its one of the great lessons of life. And he also doesnt hold grudges, as you said. So gampy, i mean, bill clintons become a good a good friend, yeah, thats right. Some people would be surprised by that. I think they are. But bubba, hes a good man. I like him. Throughout it all, my grandfather has always put family first. He has been there for us throughout the most important moments and the frivolous ones, too. Do you remember the time when you were preparing for the 1988 debates with michael dukakis, and the day before the debate, barbara couldnt find spiky, the dog . Oh, yeah. Good news was they found spiky. Even during his busiest days in the white house or on the campaign trail, he was always simply gampy to us. I dont know if you remember in 1984 when you came to midland, texas, and jenna came on the stage and kept lifting up her skirt in front of the crowd, drawing attention to yourself. People were kind of hating on the company saying this is what you consider plus size . I think its really unfortunate. I think calvin klein has done something which is really ground breaking. They released this campaign with a normal sized model. Im a size 10. Size 10 girls, theres not a lot of stuff for us to fit in the fashion industry. They released this campaign with me right alongside all of the other girls and didnt make a fuss about it. This campaign was really a month ago and just snou things are starting to go crazy. Some people think, oh, my gosh, here we go again. The fashion industry is so off. Theres Something Different about you if you were compared to a zero or a 2. Most people look at you and say that is the perfect size. Sure. Its tough because its really easy to look at someone shaped like me and say, oh, she has the perfect body, what does she have to complain about. I dont really have any reason to complain. But im getting these emails from 15yearold girls in the middle of america that are saying, thank you so much, ive never seen myself represented in this way before. You either see the super, super skinny models on the runways or most of the ads, or the socalled plus size models. Youre sort of in the middle and not represented. Yeah. And life doesnt work in only extremes. And we need to true body diversity is everything and everyone. Its a range of sizes and shapes. Its not just super skinny or just larger. How do you feel about having started this conversation . You didnt plan to, but are you glad you did . Its really humbling. Im glad that i have been hoping for a long time that someone would start this, that someone would talk about this. And that things might change for girls that are shaped like me in the fashion industry and beyond. So to be i dont want to say that im the person that started that, but to be part of the conversation thats starting is really incredible. Im really honored to do that. Its good to have you here. Getting kids of all ages more rest. 84 of people say it is a huge relief when the baby starts sleeping through the night. My little one is not quite there yet. Three months into being a mom, im definitely feeling the consequences. After a period of time, getting up every couple of hours really starts to wear on you and you get very, very exhausted. New parents know the feeling. A shellshocked, sleep deprived state. Did you know we didnt get any sleep last night . This is a sleep expert at nyu. So does mommy brain really exist . I think it does. I think that in large amount of it has to do with the sleep deprivation that the mother has experienced. I mean just basic words, i couldnt find. Does that sound like sleep deprivation . Definitely. It could be focus, attention. Just the ability to find that word on the tip of your tongue. Theres many different ways that it manifests. Months into a new parenting adventure, data shows mom remains sleep deprived. According to our new sleep survey, 54 of adults with a newborn say it makes it difficult to function. It takes a long time, especially getting continuous sleep. She gave me a test to measure my sleepiness. On average, how likely are you to fall asleep in each of these situations . Sitting and reading is definitely a high chance of sleeping. Watching tv. Lying down in the afternoon, plus, plus, plus. After lunch. Especially a big lunch. You do the math. Your score comes out at 14. What this shows is that you are carrying a sleep debt that there is a significant amount of sleepiness. No surprise there. While we dont know you can ever truly make up for lost sleep, she gave me advice on how to score. Sleep is important. Make it a priority. When your baby sleeps, you sleep. Take a night off and let a spouse or Family Member feed the baby. I guess the bottom line is am i ever going to feel normal again . Having a baby does change the rest of your life, but absolutely. Sleep debt can be repaid. It just takes dedication and time getting the sleep that you need. I can look at that baby all day long. Lets talk about another big sleep issue. Were joined by dr. Lavigne. Good morning to you. This is a big issue. How do you get your baby to sleep through the night . You really want to make sure you start off right. Infants should sleep nine to 12 hours. You want to establish a sleep routine. You sart of do the same thing all the time. They learn that nighttime is nighttime basically . Exactly right. You also want to look for your babys sleepiness cue. Capitalize on that opportunity. Youre going to miss the window and its going to get much harder. You say put your baby down awake. This is tough i have to say. In the beginning, you can help with the process. Rock your baby, soothe your baby. If you can get into the habit of putting your baby down awake, then if she wakes up in the middle of the night, she can get back to sleep again. We have tips for toddlers. Toddlers are going to sleep more at night, but also they still need naps. You want to make sure youre giving your child an opportunity to nap during the day and sleep at night. Consistency is key. You need to do the same thing all the time. You cant bring your child into your bed once. Once youve done that, its over. You always put your child back to sleep. And provide positive reinforcement you say. Even negative attention is attenti attention. If youre in the middle of the night yelling at your child, thats still giving attention. Lets get into the teen years. How much sleep should a teenager get. My goal is 8 1 2 to 10 hours depending on the child. And the number one thing i recommend teens do is turn off the Electronics One to two hours before bed. Thats going to go over well. Its a hard thing to do. That screen, it really is very stimulating. Hes a guy who has lost faith in religion, hes turned his back on god because of a tragedy in his life involving his family. He takes to the pulpit. Yeah. In his small town, and he delivers a scathing sermon on religion that goes as far as to compare it to an insurance scam. Right. The zest with which you wrote that sermon makes me think youve been wanting to deliver it for a long time. Well, i wouldnt say that i really wanted to deliver it for a long time, but i was interested in reverend jacobs as a guy with religious faith. I was raised, you know, in a christian family, methodist. And i think people with a lot of faith have a lot further to fall. This guy, as i said, compares it to an insurance scam, says you pay in, you pay in, you believe, you believe, thinking that at the end there will be this great payoff, and you find out the company doesnt even exist. Do you worry about offending people, or do these staunch stephen king supporters know where you lie on this . Well, id like to think that people can make a differentiation between the character and the man who wrote the character, because ive written some pretty awful things in my time, and if they cant differentiate. I mean, hey, guys, im all right, you know . Of course, id say that, wouldnt i . Exactly. Youd fool us with that. Lets talk about some bigticket items you get into in the book, okay . Faith and science, the existence of god. At this stage in your life, do you believe in god . I do. I made a decision to believe in god, because its better to believe than not to believe. I came to that conclusion when i realized that i had addiction problems that were bigger than i could solve myself. And so, it was easy to say, well, if ive got a power greater than myself, okay, thats fine, i can use that to make life livable and good. Beyond life, this idea of an afterlife. I was reading an interview youd where you said youve developed a very agnostic view on the after a life, almost a neurological theory about why it may exist or why people might talk about it. Well, i think that it might be that we are wired up in a certain way certain circuits open when youre dying and give you a lift. That seems to me that would be part of the organic survival mechanism. And that would explain this white light phenomenon that people have. As far as whats after, theres no down side in believing that theres a heaven or an elisan feel, right . Its a winwin. Its a winwin situation. If there isnt, were not going to know. Do you fear death . I dont think i fear death so much as things like alzheimers disease or advanced, you know, physical problems. You worry about the power of thinking, losing the power of thought and expressing yourself. Yeah. And ive got to say that one of the things that drove this book is im curious as to what that this is the one experience that we all go through. They say that theres nothing in life thats sure, except death and taxes. But some people dont pay their taxes. So, the one thing is death. Exactly. Unfortunately. One of the other things you said and we probably have some on this show. Probably. Ive probably interviewed a few of them. You say you still feel fear of failure, which i find hard to believe after all the success youve had. I dont think you have to worry about it. I really dont. This book is called revival. Good morning. So glad you wrote this book. Really, veterans have some very unique financial situations to deal with. They do. They move every two years in many cases. We have Service Members on the plaza with questions for you in a moment. But first, you say start with creating a budget. We all hate the b word, budget. Just call it a savings plan. The key is, you want to know what you have coming in, the bottom line number, what you have going out and where its going. And we have a chart that basically shows you how your resources should be allocated. The housing number for the military families is the most important, because when you move, housing costs change wildly. If you can keep under that 35 , youll be awesome. Okay. And youve got debt 15 . You mean just be paying off your debt. Exactly, and that doesnt include your car loan, by the way. Okay. You also mention establishing good credit. This applies to all of us, but is it particularly important for members of the military . Absolutely, because if you dont have decent credit, it can keep you out of the military, it can cause havoc with your security clearances. It can be a really big problem. So, you want to maintain good credit. Know your credit score. Members of the military can get it for free at saveandinvest. Org, which is a notforprofit site. Make sure you pay your bills on time, every time. Only use 10 to 30 of the credit you have available to you and dont shop for credit when you dont need it. You also say dont close credit card accounts if youve had them a long time. Some people think i dont use it im going to close it. Keep it if the credit line is large and its the one youve had longest in your wallet. Lets go to the plaza for a couple questions i think teed up. Take it away. Hi. My husbands active duty right now. Its a really great question and i got it a lot as i was researching this book. Generally, renting is going to make more sense, and its because youre not going to be there for that long. As you move towards separation and retirement from the military, do you recommend rolling over your thrift savings plan to an employersponsored Retirement Plan . Well, we asked you to tell us what position you prefer to sleep in, and tamron is over in the orange room with the results. Tamron, what are they saying . Okay, natalie, h backsleeper 18 , stomachsleeper 28 , and the majority of you, apparently, sleep on your side, 54 . So, most people, at least in our survey, are side sleepers. I think you said youre a slide sleeper, right . Im a side sleeper, so i guess im in the majority. Tamron, thank you. Dr. Shelby harris is the director of behavioral sleep medicine. Thanks for being here. Thank for having me. Why is sleep position so important . Well, if youre making enough time to sleep at night, you want to make sure the quality of sleep is ideal, so were well rested and refreshed in the day. So thats an easy thing to fix so you can feel better in the morning. For back sleepers, a lot of people just sleep on their backs, but its generally not a very good position for your body to sleep in, right . Well, for some people. Actually, the most neutral position for your back is actually to be on your back, sleeping that way. But you want to make sure you have a nice pillow like this thats propping you up a little bit. If you have too many pillows and you can only sleep really propped up and you snore a lot, you might want to see a sleep specialist, because it can be a sign of sleep apnea. Some people have apnea, so what are some ways to fix that . The best way to treat apnea is something called a pap therapy, which is a mask that you put on that helps keep your airway open at night. There are other treatment, weight loss. Some people its positional, so finding another position could help. For people who do want to sleep on their backs, we brought in montez. Come on in and help us out here. Youre going to show us different ways that you can get a better way of sleeping on your back. For your back, actually, montez is going to be wearing things to try and train yourself. If you snore a lot or if youre pregnant, you actually shouldnt be sleeping on your back. So, montez has things to help train you to sleep on your side. Side, okay. If you do want to sleep on your back, just note, a big fluffy pillow and another pillow under your knees can be helpful to help with your back, but if you cant be sleeping on your back, this is what you should be doing. As you can see, montez has a pocket on backwards. So, were going to put a tennis ball in it. Hes also wearing a fanny pack, and you dont have to do both. And this is a really big fanny pack. If you want to sleep on your side and a lot of them have spouses poking them and you want to sleep on your side montez, why dont you lay down for a moment. Thats to prompt him to turn. So, im guessing thats not comfortable. And it will teach you to go back on your side if you roll over. You can do the same thing with a tennis ball and a fanny pack. I dont think that if i wasnt in the business i am, im forced to read scripts all the time. Cold reads all the time, doing it on the show, the morning of table read, wed get the scripts and before they knew i had dyslexia, it was really hard because my character actually has a lot of lines and a lot of really big words, and so it was tough. And then we wrote an episode called add it up that says cici has dyslexia and at the time i found out i had dyslexia and autumn in the book has dyslexia. It challenges her. Not something we throw away or dont look at. Its constantly looked at in the book. Its good to teach kids its not that easy, that you have to work hard at it. Autumn, her character is half cuban, dyslexic, bullied by her peers in high school. Was this some what autobiographical . Some pages were like me, my father passed away and her father passed away and he leaves her with this magical journal to help her through high school. When she writes in the journal things come to life but since shes dyslexic they come out a little wonky backfiring on her throughout the series. This morning on our series hope to it, they say a dog is mans best friend, and for the nonprofit canines for warriors, theyre counting on that. Based in jacksonville, florida, the Program Gives service dogs to veterans diagnosed with posttraumatic stress disorder, and the results have been remarkable. It seems commonplace to us, a quick weekend run to a place like home depot. But for a veteran suffering from ptsd you can go to the store for two to five minutes and be somewhat okay. Anything longer than that is a nightmare. It can cause debilitating anxiety and depression. Just move the dogs up and down the aisle. Thats why brett simon and his mother, sherri, started the nonprofit canines for warriors. We can provide warriors suffering from ptsd and traumatic brain injury a Service Animal to allow them to get back out into society. Brett deployed to iraq twice as an explosivesdetecting dog handler. When he returned home, he had trouble settling back into normal life. I hardly left the house. I would go shopping at midnight, 2 00 in the morning for groceries and things that i needed. Considering bretts profession, his mom thought a service dog would help him. She had done a lot of research while i was gone. She knew that dogs were a passion of mine. In the middle of a nightmare, he wakes me up, puts his head on me, puts his paw on my face and its a lot easier to go right back to sleep knowing that hes there. They did come out and they have released everything they say the clinic did wrong. They talk about multiple failings that went on when joan went into cardiac arrest. She was undergoing an endoscopy. Here what is they found out. Doctors did not determine proper body weight for the propofol to give her. They didnt understand how light she was. If you didnt know joan, she was a bigger than life personality but she was tiny. Knowing joan, she probably wouldnt give her weight. You have to take it. Sure. On the record the anesthesiologist wrote down 300 milligram of propofol, which is about twice as much as would be thats the report. Shes saying she didnt give her that much but thats what was written down. That was reported. Her personal physician performed the procedure even though she wasnt a member of the clinic staff, so thats an issue. They say joan only consented to an upper endoscopy. Thats what she agreed to. She said her doctors decided to do larnygoscopy. And they said a photo was taken, certainly not professional. They didnt identify her deteriating vital signs. In a timely way. Certain medications should be taken in the morning because they act as a stimulant. Other medications kind of have a side effect of fatigue. Take them in the evening. What about sleep aids . Sleep aids, lets start with over the counter products. They do work. And talk to your doctor about them, discuss things like melatonin, and try those before moving on. Take something than not sleep . 100 . We all need sleep. In your 60s this is me. We finally got there. Problem with the 60s is we start to see physical ailments as well as lifestyle.
