Were on the scene in brooklyn this morning. Those two areas were posted in this neighborhood and what should have been a routine assignment in a difficult part of town. Instead the new York Police Commissioner says a gunman walked up to the passenger side of their window and started firing. They didnt have an opportunity to take out their own weapons and the commissioner says they may not have seen the gunman at all. Caught by surprise, because an attack like this is so rare and so ruthless. They were, quite simply, assassinated. Targeted for their uniform and for the responsibility they embraced to keep the people of this city safe. The suspect 28yearold ids mail brinsley allegedly executed two Police Officers. They take one of ours, lets take 2 of theirs and including hags rip eric garner and rip mike brown. Some of the postings that i understand that are out there seem to indicate that he had a very strong bias against Police Officers. He had been arrested at least 15 times in the past, including a charge on weapons possession. He allegedly starting the day shooting a former girlfriend in baltimore who is now recovering in the hospital. Police say brinsley then traveled to new york and with a silver nine millimeter semiautomatic killed officers rafael ramos and wenjian liu. Other officers in the neighborhood chased him to a nearby subway stop where he used the same gun to kill himself. Brinsley acted alone. There had been weeks of protest following a grand jury decision not to indict Police Officers in the death of eric garner. Last weekend, two officers were injured during the protests on the brooklyn bridge. Overnight the head of new york city patrolman benegative alent situation. Theres blood on many hands tonight, those that incited violence on this street under the guise of protest that tried to tear down what new york city Police Officers did every day. Officer liu got married two months ago and officer ramos was the father of a 13yearold. This sems back to comments that the mayor made right after that grand jury decision not to indict the officers in the eric garner death. He had set said in a press conference that he had spoken with his son about his fears of his sons inaction with police in this city and after those comments, the head of the Police Officers union came out and said in his words the police felt like they had been thrown under the bus. Now, so those big storms set to make traveling a major hassle on this christmas, with our advice basically if you are going somewhere for christmas, you should probably leave sooner than later. Olympic track team that fought in world war ii, crashed in the pacific, spent 47 days raft bound at sea in shark infested waters, then taken and brutally tortured as a prisoner in war by the japanese. Throughout the process, you had the privilege of forming a relationship with him. I would love to know more about that and the effect that man had on you. Its hard to explain it. He was a father figure. He was a friend. He was that person that when i was overwhelmed and when i would lose heart or feel overwhelmed i wasnt sure i was the best person to make the film. He was the person i would go to for help and advice. He was so full of love for other people. He was so full of joy. I just dont think ive met anybody in my life that was so funny. He was so funny. With all hes been through. He wanted this movie to be a message to others to remind them of what the human spirit is what we have inside of us. Its strong. Sadly zamperini passed away this july at 97. I know you went to his hospital room. He was able to screen a rough cut of this film. What did that mean to you . What did that mean to him . Do you remember the first thing he said to you after he watched it . It was the look in his eyes. We just looked at each other. I cant talk about it without crying. Im sorry. It was beautiful to watch him watch his life and remember his life. It felt i felt honored to be there at the end of his life. In the book and in the movie, pete is the one person that keeps him going. Im curious for you in your life, who is your pete . My mom. She looked at me differently, saw something i didnt see in myself. Its a reminder to all of us, if we can be that for somebody else. If we can be pete in this life, give that support. This church does not just give to those in need during the holidays. Like many, their efforts are year around. The energy at San Francisco glide memorial is infectious. Attracting people from around the block and around the world. When a Young Williams arrived here as pastor in 1963, his flock numbered 65. This seemed to be a good time to make things happen that would be more meaningful. At one Point Williams removed the cross from the sanctuary. In his eyes removing judgment and creating a place everyone felt welcome. Once it started, couldnt stop it. Janice, a poet and author, first came to glide in those early days searching for something different. She never left. She and williams eventually married. Not just because we know well eat well because you guys are like family here on the today show. What are we making this morning . Erica, we have salmon tartar. We use the alaskan king salmon to make this dish. We were talking about to cut it in nice sized pieces, you put in the refrigerator, keep it really cold and then you do it. I love that tip. This look delicious. Were also making this is actually a fairly easy beautiful dish. This is tagolini with shrimp. We start with oil, garlic, and some onion, and we put in some chopped tomatoes. And are these crushed tomatoes. Tomatoes, but its been cooked, and then we put in our shrimp this is the great thing of cooking something with shrimp, they cook quickly. They cook in two to three minutes. When they are pink, they are done. Then we have we put this right in the pan . Right in here and it all cooks together. Perfect. And we have this beautiful finished piece. This is the finished piece and its delicious. Ths a vegetarian option . Unbelievable. Its eggplant. Baked. Delicious. Its terrific. I floured, egged and bread crumbed the eggplant. That is what its going to look like when were done with it. Then im going to start layering with tomato sauce. Then what ive done is this ricotta cheese mixture. This has a little egg in it. Obviously, ricotta cheese, parmesan, months rel lad mozzeerella. This is what it looked like i like low and low, 300, 350 degrees. Put a a cover underneath it. Thats what its going to look like. Your house must smell amazing. Great side dish. Great starter. Were making a pair de pear crisp. Were using bartlett pears. Here is the mayor i nationwide marinade has light brown and dark brown sugar, lots of butter, cinnamon, were going to let this cook for about 10 minutes. We add flower and it gets this slurry texture to it. It gets nice and thick. Imagine its cooking for 10 minutes. Well put it in our baking dish. And i love the crisp on top. Dylan, i am going to need your help. I want you to put that strusle topping on top. Layer it on.
