The wild weather system is wrecking havoc in the southwest and northeast. Here is the scene in amarillo texas. Snow piling up to make it difficult for cars to get through. We are seeing similar scenes playing out in the northeast. Dylan is keeping an eye on it. It is a mess everywhere. It is a system that is stretching over the country. Road conditions were treacherous during the height of the storm. So bad, New Hampshires one major highway was shutdown for hours. The worst accident on 93 in my career. Reporter that was one of two pile ups on the New Hampshire route 93 on friday. Only a couple of inches of snow fell but it came down fast swirling into whiteout conditions and worse yet, turned immediately to ice on frozen roads. Drivers had no chance to react. Literally, came out of the fog of snow and it was right there. We just slammed into it. People started hitting us. Reporter one after another until 25 vehicles left wrecked and burned. Police say a dozen people were taken to hospitals. None had life threatening injuries. Texas and oklahoma expect another day of wintry weather today. Black ice is tripping up many unsuspecting drivers. This pickup is one of the vehicles that crashed around san angelo texas friday. The same conditions left highways littered with trucks and cars. Firefighters racing to the scene in missouri spun off the road trapping crew members inside but everyone escaped unharmed. Parts of new mexico are keeping up with heavy snow. And usually sunny arizona began a new year with enough snow for a snowball fight. This is going to be mainly a rain event for most of the east coast. You can see on the Northern Edge including chicago and Southern Michigan and down into parts of pennsylvania that is where we do have some ice. Sleet and freezing rain. It doesnt take long for just a little bit of ice to make it slippery. Because of that freezing rain advisories across southwestern pennsylvania. Winter weather advisoryies and winter storm warnings in new england. We also have strong storms. We have the snow ice and some Severe Weather especially today right down near the gulf coast. New orleans and jackson, mississippi and mobile alabama. We already had a couple of tornado Warnings Issued this morning. Here is the breakdown. We will start off with the wintry mix, including northwestern parts of new jersey up into upstate new york. We will see it changeover to rain. Tomorrows High Temperature in new york city should be in the 60s believe it or not. It will quickly changeover to rain. We could see several inches of rain especially near the gulf coast. As far as the snow is concerned, it will take until sunday morning before it turns to rain in central new england. We could see up to 9 inches locally. Boston could pick up a couple inches. Including chicago. It is the ice that is dangerous. 10 of an inch of ice. We could see up to. 25 of ice in the blue shade here including the plateau and south of buffalo. We have a lot of aspects to the storm. It is the ice that coats efforts. Dylan, thanks. Turning to a brave girl recovering this morning. She is the sole survivor of a horrific plane crash. Somehow this 7yearold managed to walk away trekking through a mile through dark woods for help. Nbcs john yang has more. Reporter the small plane crashed in kentucky friday night. State Police Identified the victims as marty and Kimberly Gutzler of nashville, illinois. Their 9yearold daughter and 14yearold cousin died in the crash. The 7yearold daughter survived. Friday night, a man heard a knock on his door and stunned to find the girl outside with blood on her legs and face. She had to walk close to. 75 of a mile through woods with downed trees and briars and everything else. She was barefooted. One sock on her foot. Reporter the family was flying from key west, florida to mt. Vernon illinois in a twin engine plane. They reported engine trouble. She said her mom and dad were dead. The high waves making it difficult for them to get under water cameras below the surface to look at the large objects spotted by sonar. One is 30 feet long and 15 feet wide. A search crew brings more bodies to shore, ships at the wreckage site investigate the most promising lead yet. Two large objects. The head of indonesian search ands are cue told reporters this morning, i can confirm this is part of the airasia aircraft. Investigators believe airasia flight 8501 may have stalled mid flight in bad weather and fallen out of the sky. They found an inflatable slide and emergency exit door. Clues some analysts think could point to another theory. The pilot landed on the water and passengers were unable to get out before it sank. I find it unlikely this crew was intentionally trying to put the airplane down on the water. From High Altitude especially loss of control, it is a high speed impact. Reporter on friday the second of many funerals airasia founder Tony Fernandes helped bury the flight attendant. His airline is under more scrutiny. Flights from surabaya to singapore are grounded because airasia did not have the right permit. At the home in surabaya they are planning more funerals. He lost his brother, sisterinlaw and mother and 9yearold niece. Do you hope to hear something soon . Reporter he said he is optimistic they will find the bodies but it is in gods hands. The United States is imposing strict sanctions on north korea. Sheinelle is following that story and some other stories. Good morning. The u. S. Says the new round of sanctions slapped on north korea over the sony hack attack is the beginning. On friday the president signed executive order authorizing the sanctions and ten people who worked for the government. U. S. Assets will be frozen and barred from the u. S. Financial system. The sanctions put north korea on notice that payback is not directed to those behind the attack. Back home a father and son from texas are under arrest after a violent multistate crime spree. It came to an end in West Virginia on thursday after a traffic stop turned into a shootout with suspects and police. Two officers were wounded. Two dead bodies were discovered in the suspects truck. The two suspects also face charges in the deaths. Bono says he is not sure if he will ever play the guitar again after a bike accident in new york. On a blog on the bands web site he says recovery has been more difficult than he thought and shared an xray of his elbow. His arm was shattered in six places and required hours of surgery. We have the wintry mix on the Northern Edge of it. This could coat the ground up to. 25 of ice through chicago and detroit and western new york state and pennsylvania. On the northern side of, that we will see eventually snow. We could end up with about 6 to 9 inches of snow before it turns to rain sunday morning. We have the secondary cold front producing a bit of light snow in the Northern Rockies and upper midwest. This is going to make it extremely cold. Good morning here. Already responsible for the deaths of at least 15 children and it is now spread to three dozen states. Unfortunately, if you got the flu vaccine this year you might not be entirely safe. Is this a worst season . We are predicting a worse season than normal because of the strain you mention circulates frequently. It predicts a more severe season. It happens to be a more verilent virus in general. Half of the h3n2 strain has drifted. The vaccine production made last february and march is not a perfect match. It is always a moving tar getgettarget. This happens right in the heat of this flu season in january and february. The w. H. O. Experts will predict which strains will be active for next year and production begins then. This strain drifted last march a month after they chose it. I got my shot september and october. Did i waste my time . You did not waste your time. This is the message we want to get out. It may not be a perfect match, there is partial protection from the flu vaccine. Additionally the flu vaccine covers a number of other strains which may predominate. Remember too, the vaccine when you get it if you get the flu, will make your symptoms less severe and hopefully of less duration. This is possible because of Assembly Bill 60 the new temporary dmv office in san jose. They are open specifically because of this new law. It allows undocumented immigrants to qualify for a drivers license with a photo i. D. And proof of california residency. Passing an eye exam and written test, applicants will walk out with a drivers permit. More than 11,000 people in california submitted applications at the four centers. 611 applications were processed in san jose. That office stayed open late last night accommodating everyone who had an appointment. To a followup, San Francisco police have released the names of four officers involved in the shooting death of a Mission District man shot more than a dozen times in a neighborhood last march. According to a city spokesperson, the officers involved in the killing of alex were roger morse, Richard Schiff, nathan chew and Sergeant Jason sawyer. The names were not released earlier because of Credible Threats. We are now a week away from the biggest closure in Golden Gate Bridge history. We walk down the street and we touch things from the light post to metal fences. This one here at a playground. What would happen if these common every day objects were actually electrified. Simply touching them sending shock waves through your body. It is happening in cities and towns across the country more often than you think. So many recent cases of people and even pets injured and killed. Before you leave the house, check this out. Thats a bus stop sparking out of control. After having paperwork approved passing an eye exam and written test applicants will walk out with a drivers permit. More than 11,000 people in california submitted applications at the four centers. 611 of those applications were processed in san jose. On the leading edge of it on the northern side of it we have snow and ice. Because of that, we have Winter Weather advisories. The purple there in western pennsylvania, that is the freezing rain advisory. An ice warning earlier today. A winter storm warning across new england where we will see most of the snow. Add to that a threat of Severe Weather. We had some tornado Warnings Issued earlier this morning. We could see more tornadoes break out in louisiana and into mississippi and alabama. Here is how today goes. You see the snow and ice across the interior northeast . That will be replaced by rain. In fact tomorrow temperatures in the midatlantic will top out in the mid 60s. No wonder why all that snow will change over to rain. We will see several inches of rain. We could have 6 to 9 inches of snow before it turns to rain in new england. A period of the freezing rain and sleet. That will make roads slippery. As far as Ice Accumulation in blue there, thats about a quarter inch to a half inch of ice. It downs trees and power lines and makes the roads treacherous. Even a glaze on the roads will make streets and sidewalks very slippery. Keep that in mind if youre out and about. Yes, good morning. The 7yearold girl was in the hospital this morning after walking away from a horrific plane crash overnight. The child trekked for nearly a mile in the dark woods after the plane went down in kentucky. She finally knocked on a door and said she was in a plane crash. Four people were killed in the crash. Her parents, sister and cousin. The pilot reported engine trouble before the plane went down. Now to indonesia, where theres been a major disrecovery in the hunt for wreckage in the airasia crash. Nbcs Kelly Cobiella is on the scene in surabaya, indonesia with the latest. Kelly. Reporter sheinelle, search and rescue Officials Say they found several large objects, 90 feet down on the sea floor. Four objects in all. Today, all day long, they have been fighting high waves to get a better look with some underwater remote operated cameras. One of the objects 30 feet long and 15 feet wide. The head of indonesias search and rescue is confident all four are from the airasia plane. It is not clear which part of the aircraft they are looking at. Searchers brought more bodies to shore, but the number of victims recovered still stands at 30. Four people have been identified. Airasia founder Tony Fernandez went to the funeral for one of them a flight attendant. That was on friday. As his airline underwent more scrutiny. Today, indonesian officials grounded all flights. Airasia flights from surabaya to singapore indefinitely because of what appears to be paper work issues. There is debate of how effective sanctions will be. U. S. Officials say it will make it harder for them to make money selling ballistics and small arms and ammunition. President obama signing sanctions aiming to isolate further north korean entities. Operatives do a lot of kim jonguns dirty work especially in arms sales. And investigating the sony breach the white house is promising more repercussions to come. White house officials are developing a plan to include public and covert operations against north korea. It started with an email from someone she did not know. At the bottom of the email two photos of me changing in my room. Wait. Two photos of you changing your clothes. Half naked. Completely. You must have thought who had taken the photos. I was confused. It took a few seconds. Reporter cassidys computer was infected with software that let her hacker take control of the web cam and everything else. If she did not give him more photos he would go public with the images he had. This guy has control of my entire life right now. I dont know how to stop it. Reporter the hacker tar getted other women, too. Including cassidy knew from school. Like jenny. He sent her email after email. Saying i have been watching you for over a year now. I have all of your information. I have been taking pictures of you. Reporter after months of investigating, the fbi made an arrest. The person responsible wasnt a stranger but former High School Classmate jared abrahams. He pleaded guilty to three counts of extortion and one count of unauthorized computer access. Im dreading this. Reporter and last march, cassidy faced her fears in court to face him in court. She came out ready to put this behind her. You said you dont want this to define the rest of your life. No. You dont want to give him control. No. I want to be able to move on from this. I think i already have. We are all inundated with boxes with things you ordered, but things you received. Instead of recycling them. Reuse and repurpose. You can take them and you can paint over them. You know how sometimes kids like the boxes more than the present. They do. Now you made them into giant building blocks. These are more manageable. We take the boxes we get and make them into castles or race cars. That lasts so long. This is more manageable. You can use them to make a fort or village. Everybody has the beautiful holiday cards and i feel terrible getting rid of them. They are pretty. Reuse. Recycle. You can cut them into tags and get ready for next year. Cut them into a tag shape and take your hole punch and punch a hole with twine. People are sending photo cards. You will not use those for tags but for a puzzle for kids. A jigsaw puzzle.
