Were live at the courthouse. And down to a dozen. Basketballs march madness in the home stretch as the nations top seed gets revenge. With an exclamation point as ucla and gonzaga get set to face off today, friday, march 27, 2015. Announcer from nbc news, this is today with matt lauer and Savannah Guthrie live from studio 1a in rockefeller plaza. And good morning. Welcome to today on a friday morning. 7 00 in the morning out on the west coast. Weve got a lot going on. Lets get to our top story, disturbing new information about the copilot who prosecutors say intentionally crashed that plane in the french alps. There is evidence that not only he was suffering from an illness but that he ignored a doctors note to miss work on the very day of the crash. Hes got this investigation covered from germany to france and also on the possible changes this could lead to for airlines. Katy tur we want to start with you and what prosecutors are saying. Good morning. Reporter prosecutors have released findings of what they were able to find within his childhood home, also his dusseldorf apartment. They did not find evidence of a suicide note, no evidence that he was claiming responsibility for this crash. Also no evidence of religious or political affiliation. They did find evidence that he was suffering an illness, they wouldnt say what sort of illness, but german media is widely reporting he was suffering from depression. They found doctors notes, excusing him from work including a doctors note excuseing him from work the day that he crashed that plane officials say. They say that he was not supposed to be at work that day, and that he was defying a doctors order. Also that he was hiding all of this from his employer, thats why lufthansa did not see evidence of this. The coworkers never told officials they saw evidence of this, there was no report that something seemed to be wrong with him before this crash. I know you are there in his hometown talking to people. What are they saying about this young man . Reporter much the same, that they didnt see anything wrong, that he was polite, fun, we spoke to the neighbors. They were shocked. We spoke to the people that knew him from his flight club he joined. He was nice, enjoyed flying. They didnt see evidence of depression but those close to him were hearing did see evidence of depression including a potential crisis in his personal life, potential issue or breakup with a girlfriend. Nbc news has not been able to confirm that but thats whats being reported here in german media. They are also going to look at the training he was training, a break from his training in 2009 for some time, they are going to look at why he took this break, for how long and how serious it was. Right now they are trying to find out if the this was all premeditated or if he just decided to crash this plane in the middle of this flight. Either way, devastating consequences. Katy tur on the investigation, thank you. Let us turn to keir simmons near the crash site in france. Good morning to you. Reporter matt, good morning. Wear hearing that the families of the victims have given a dna sample to help in the identification process. The fbi has launched its own independent investigation because three of the victims were american, also because of reports that the copilot received some training in america. We hear that the family of the copilot are here in france. Andreas lubitz suffering from a crisis according to german newspapers. On the mountain in france the remains of the 14 nun people he allegedly killed covered by yellow tarps, a pain staking search for clues and identify the victims. Everything that can help us. Reporter personal possessions, jewelry, clothes. Thats it. Reporter among the relatives were the copilots family pulled aside and told he caused the crash. And an immediate consequence following americas lead assuring two people are always in the cockpit. Lubitz locked the door, the prosecutor says, using controls like those seen in this airbus video. Disabling the doors key pad, preventing his fellow pilot from reentering. The black boxle revealsy programmed the planes deadly decent. Recorded the screams of passengers in the final minutes. They were innocent people this relative said. If lubitz was ill the company should have been aware. The families were brought to the bottom of the mountain. This may be as close as they can get. Their loved ones final resting place. Stars and stripes for the three americans killed, the third victim robert oliver, named last night. The European Airlines now adopting the two people in the cockpit rule, airlines from norway, iceland and the canadian transportation minister says airlines there will adopt that rule from now on but matt, its too late for the people on board the flight that crashed in the mountains behind me. Keir simmons, thank you very much. Greg is a former ntsb investigator, good morning to you. Good morning, matt. So what were hearing from these investigators is that this guy hid an illness from his employer, although they are not saying what that illness was. That he had a doctors notes excusing him from work or shouldnt work that every covered the day he intentionally crashed this the plane. The take away is if a pilot has a physical or mental condition, it doesnt seem that hard to hide it from an airline. Thats right, matt, because the medical examiner that typically does these medicals even in the United States is not an employee of the company. And in this case lufthansa or germanwings, so this pilot would go in, he has his own personal physician which is separate from his ame or his aeromedical physical so his personal physician will prescribe drugs and do examinations and develop findings that arent necessarily reported either to his ame and not reported unless the pilot does so, to the company. And thats the way it is here in the United States. A pilot goes through a physical and emotional evaluation before getting hired. Once they are on the payroll its the honor system, isnt it. Absolutely. And its selfpolicing. So if a pilot is taking, in this case if this young man was taking any kind of prescription medicine for this issue of depression, he may or may not have reported that. Here in the United States same thing. There is a list of banned drugs by the faa you must selfdisclose, at least thats what the regulation says. I investigated accidents where pilots have not disclosed medical conditions and the use of prescribed drugs. This is a rare instance this pilot may not have disclosed this to an airline because of nefarious reasons but on an everyday basis its because pilots dont want to be taken out or be docked or lose status. Absolutely. And in this case it may be a medical condition that could permanently ground this young man, and given what his neighbors and his family said about his passion to fly if it takes him out of the cockpit that is going to be a major life altering event and that could be the core, but then as has been reported at least early on, that if he had a breakup and other life altering event this could have been a conglomeration of all of those coming together. Greg, as always, thank you. This is clearly the exception to the rule. But unfortunately, when you talk about an Airline Pilot exception can cost the lives of 150 or 217 or 104 people as weve seen. People are trying to find a solution. Sometimes there isnt one. Closer to home we have groups working to put out hot spots a it the site of that building explosion and collapse here in new york city. Rehema ellis is at the scene. What is the latest there . Reporter after firefighters responded to a twoalarm fire that quickly escalated to a sevenalarm fire. I ran out and i saw glass all the way across the street. Housing more than two dozen residential units and a restaurant. One man caught on tape helping a woman down from a fire escape right before firefighters arrived. Flames quickly spread to neighboring structures as crewed worked to contain the fire that new york city mayor bill de blasio says was possibly caused by plumbing and gas work. Amanda knox awaiting word in the United States. Raffaele sollecito in rome with hills family. If these verdicts, guilty verdicts, are upheld thats it, Legal Options over. Both will be convicted murderers. A Police Escort to keep the cameras away from Raffaele Sollecito as he leaves court, waiting for hear whats next. The final verdict or another chance in a long courtroom drama of amanda knox and her former italian boyfriend. Today, five Supreme Court judgeserd the last arguments from the defense teams in italys highest court. And are now making their decision on the convictions of knox and Raffaele Sollecito for the 2007 murder of knoxs british roommate. Uphold the guilty verdicts handed down at the last appeal, or send the case back for yet another appeal. Knox and her ex, both main taken they are innocent. He attended the hearings this week, mobbed by the press at the entrance on wednesday. Thursday was his 31st birthday, if his conviction stands it could be his last one as a free man for decades. As for knox, if the guilty verdict is confirmed she could face an extradition battle from her home in seattle. Even before her most recent guilty verdict in 2013 she talked with matt on today about a possible extradition. They could want you extradited. You could be here outside the reach of the italian law but an International Arrest warrant, you would not be allowed to travel or would be perilous. Can you imagine life like that . I imagine it all the time. Because i have to think the worst case scenario. I have to prepare in my mind what that would be like. Reporter but the subject of extradition leaves many questions. I think the United States is going to have a very difficult time honoring an extradition request for amanda knox. First of all she has a lot of Popular Support among the people of the u. S. Second, there seem to have been a number of legal irregularities in her case, trying her over and over again. Reporter as the Supreme Court decision for the pair approaches. Investigators searching the homes of copilot Andreas Lubitz uncovered signs that he hid evidence of an illness from his employers. Italys highest court deciding if the her conviction for the murder of her roommate will be upheld. Firefighters remain at the scene of a tragic explosion here in new york city. The blast injured at least 25 people and destroyed three buildings. Investigators believe it was sparked by plumbing and electric work. A new york commuter train killed the mother of ellen broder. Her family speaks out for the first time about the accident and how they are coming to terms with that tragic story. A sad story. We begin with more on this investigation into the plane crash in the french alps and what could have caused the copilot to deliberately fly in the side of a mountain. Its raising new questions about the screening of pilots everywhere. Tom costello is on that story for us from washington. Good morning. Reporter good morning. German media report that Andreas Lubitz may have been treated for depression and may have broken up with a girlfriend but nbc news has not confirmed that. While he was undergoing training he interrupted for personal reasons. Really the question this morning is what could have possibly set him off. The investigation into copilot andrei yas lubitz motive and mental state will likely take months. The kreor insists there were no signs he was unstable. We choose our cockpit personnel very carefully because its part of our dna that we have qualified personnel. We look for psychologically healthy workers. Reporter unfortunately this is not the first time a pilot committed suicide and mass murder. In 2013, flight 470 in 1999, egypt air 990 off massachusetts, in 1997, silk air 185 in indonesia. Hi everyone. A suicide flight the leading theory in the mysterious disappearance of Malaysia Airlines flight 370. New pilot applicants go through a full psychological workup. Former fbi agent and jetblue Vice President ken maxwell. It includes a mental evaluation and cannot be any evidence as a result of this exam of psychosis or bipolar disorder or serious personality disorders. Lufthansa insists its evaluations are also rigorous but in germany and in the u. S. Once a pilot has the job the yearly physical does not include a mental evaluation. In 2012, a jetblue pilot suffered a mental breakdown on a flight. The copilot locked him out of the cockpit, then made an Emergency Landing in amarillo. Experts say identifying a potential psychological issue in any one can be very difficult. The idea now that a full psychological workup would somehow clue you in to which pilots are going to do things like this, its fiction. While pilots dont go through regular psychological evaluation the Airline Pilots association is insisting that there is a peer review process constantly with fellow crew members and managers keeping an eye out for unusual behavior since nobody wants to fly with somebody who is unstable, everybody has a vested interest. Thank you. If you dont see each other every day the nature of this work is that you dont necessarily work with the same people every day. Exactly right. That mysterious kidnapping out of california gets stranger. A woman reportedly taken from her home, showed up two days later. While police say its a hoax, both she and her boyfriend claim the ordeal was very real. Here is nbcs joe fryer. Denise left a Police Station after meeting for hours with investigators, her Attorney Says she wants to clear her name after Police Called her kidnapping a hoax. She is emotionally and physically broken and the fact that shes been designated as a suspect only hurts her further. Attorneys for her boyfriend erin quinn also claim its no hoax, they say at least two kidnappers entered his home early monday and abducted huskins so why wait several hours to report it. He was not only bound up he was drugged. He was forced to drink something that even the kidnappers told him was drugs. Reporter while huskins was missing the chronicle received an audio recording of someone claiming to be her. On wednesday morning she turned up safe, 400 miles away in her hometown huntington beach. By that night police said there was no evidence she was kidnapped. If you can imagine devoting all of our resources, 24 hours a day, on what i would classify as a wild goose chase, its a tremendous loss. Reporter police have not commented since. Her boyfriend says he was interrogated for 17 hours giving them a blood sample, clothes and access to his electronics. He received messages from the kidnappers demanding a ransom of 8500, an amount many find odd. 8500, split between two kidnappers, thats a little over ver 4,000 apiece. Most of us could get an advance on our mastercard without the chance of going to prison for 30 years. Reporter deepening mystery whether this girl was truly gone. Com and tell us what you can do to make their dream come true. We, that includes myself may drop by to help that out. Savannah . Carson thank you so much. In todays world of Cyber Bullying and body shaming, is it possible for social media to be a force for good . According to a survey, it can. Here is katherine to explain and tell us about this survey. Good morning, good to see you. We will dive right into this and talk to 1,000 people with at least four social media accounts. What was the big take away . The big take away is social media is being used for a good thing. 89 of women feel more confident. Its awesome information presented by southwest. People said it strengthened their relationship. From the survey how people are. They really love it. What does this say . Women decided they would want social media over shoes, over chocolate, over going out with their friends. So people are really into social media right now which is a great thing. Im really surprised and heres another stat that surprised me. They would be willing to give up over social media going out, alcohol . And shopping, its crazy. People feel a little bit of an addiction problem with social media, yeah. Another thing to move on, instagram or facebook. There are a lot of things where people like their posts or favorite tweet, they are taking it personally. What we found out is when you get a like on a picture or instagram, it makes you feel great about yourself and you are more compelled to give another person a compliment when you receive a compliment yourself. Thats good. Absolutely. We have this reality check. Its not all roses. Tell us about this. I think we all know we post pictures of ourselves when we look good or have ourselves in pictures that we dont consider flattering. There is work to be done on that, but people have make makeupfree selfies and make people more realistic. 76 said they post edited photos, like photoshop or something . Just to make ourselves look better on social media. 66 tagged unflattered photos. Im for that. I think its what you want to share. The perspective you want people to have. Who wants to post a bad picture . Exactly. Thats my point. Lastly, but not least, what is the take away from this survey . I think it does bring people together to have social media. The biggest take away for me is you see social media being used in a positive way and that women are taking control of the situation and using it for good. And 60 said they prefer in person interaction, so thats good. Thats definitely a relief because we are always on our phones always texting or tweeting or emailing, so it is so important to have personal interaction. Appreciate it. How has paul influenced your life . You talk about how much he is a brother to you and he talked to you about father hood. He went in a lot earlier than i did. He took on that role of being the guide of father hood for me. Its beautiful. The one thing paul always wanted me to do was be present at my childs birth. He was adamant about it. We were on the bridge in puerto rico doing the end scene and paul walker and i come out of that car and her water broke in new york. My son was being born. He was like we can film later. You have to go now. He was right and i did. How has father hood changed you . I dont know if its because i have kids i dont want to be i dont enjoy killer mode as much as i used to. Al and willie are off and natalie is on assignment. You ran in here meat loaf and all. Meat loaf and all. Everybody is on vacation. Natalie is on vacation. They are working hard. Willy and al. You know where the two men are. Are you a creature of habit and when you start your day in the morning, you need your coffee and you open the paper and you do something routine. I was sitting here and dylan was here and i said im a creature of habit. I set up this chair for a year. In the center this has nothing to do with my role on the show. You needed on to be in that chair. I have a ritual and my wife will she takes the face washout of the shower and washes her face. Then i have to do things in a particular order. I have to wash my hair and wash my face and do the body wash thing. I do the whole thing. Sometimes i have to get out if the face wash is out of the shower i have to open the door. It throws off my whole thing. We are so happy to have you both here. We know a lot about you and learn more about this. A little bit later, we have a fun show planned. In the news the big story remains. The crash of germanwings 9525 and the investigation into the copilot,an dre ans lubitz and they said they found evidence in the apartment. Lets go to katy in germany with the latest on the investigation. Reporter the prosecutors were able to investigate both the home of lubitz and his apartment in dusseldorf. They did not find any evidence of a suicide note or a note claiming responsibility. They found no evidence of religious or political affiliation, but they did find significant evidence that he was suffering for an illness. They couldnt say which illness. The german media has been reporting for the past day he was suffering from depression. They found doctors notes recent and a doctors note excusing him from work the day of the crash that means he was not supposed to be working the day of the crash. They found evidence that he was hiding this from his employer. That would coincide with what we heard from lufthansa and german wings that they had no evidence of anything wrong with him. They didnt see anything wrong with them and what we were hearing from those two and the flight club that he was a part of they didnt see anything wrong with him. They are looking to see if they can find any other motivation and any evidence that this was premedicated. Tamron . Thank you very much for the latest information. This raises the question that a lot of people asked with lester holt and the developments and his name was released in the background who would fly our planes. Right now in the United States new pilot applications undergo background checks with full psychological work ups. In germany and the u. S. Once the pilot has the job, that does not include a mental evaluation. A lot happens over the course of a career that you could start changing. Its almost like that test needs to be every year or couple of years. It makes sense to have that be an updated thing. Life is a roller coaster and it goes up and down and your mental state from one moment to the next needs to be constantly checked if you are in charge of other peoples lives. Its a tough one that you have with Mental Health experts. If this leads to discrimination against people who have Mental Health issues. Just because you suffer from depression doesnt mean you are homicidal or suicidal. There other jobs where people are responsible for a great number of lives. These are serious questions including the thing that was startling to me. Someone can lock the cockpit door and overhide everything and prohibit or present someone from getting inside. Its incredible. The looks are in place to prevent somebody coming in and announcing to have the pilot be the one. The back up that the pilot can get in. A code or something. Some combination lock. Or the universal procedure that a pilot or copilot cannot be alone in the cockpit. Thats the Parent Company of germanwings that they were not changing their policy that allowed for one individual to be in the cockpit with the aviation expert. He said he believes that lufthansa will likely change as well as norwegian airlines. They changed their policy and in the United States there is a policy that you cant be alone. Crazy story. Kind of a turn here. We face a lot of our shopping and restaurants going on online reviews. Online owners and owners of the retail shops are fighting back when they feel some of this is user unfair. This happened and someone is being sued over a bad review. She got a bad review from a former client and angies list. She said it negatively impacted her business. She is doing her 65,000 cleaning defamation. They are allowing businesses to respond, but you can say whatever you want as long as you are not lying. The issue here i travel a lot for work and the first thing i do when im in a town im not familiar with i yelp a couple of restaurants. I dont go to the places that have bad reviews. Simple as that. Maybe that place should step it up and not do bad. I dont know if its a vendetta or a friend saying its great, but its someone who is padding the numbers. I dont know what to think. Im thinking now, is it possible for actors to sue critics . Thats a whole new opportunity. Have you had a showdown with a critic. This is maybe an opportunity to hire legal representation and deal with them. Come on. Thats how we go. With twitter and all that people can say whatever they want. The people they are talking about are negatively affected. Sometimes they do not know the rule and they cant lie, but who is policing whether or not they are lying or not . Its like now we need another department to review the reviews. Its like thats how its going to go. I do like this dog owner or groomer, her business is top notch. She is fighting to protect it. Let us know what you think. Those restaurants for us. Check out the reviews. We asked on today. Com, does it affect your purchasing decision and 87 of you said yes. 13 said no. Not just in the United States. But sometimes people say can you please take off your shoes. Do you ask people to take off their shoes when they come to your house . Workmen. Workmen. Yeah, ill ask them to take it off because that carries it all through. But no, you have a party, you dont ask people to take their shoes off. Some people do that. I know. The Huffington Post talked to editors from 16 Different Countries to feel out how they feel if a guest comes in. In india, they say do not kiss your host on the cheek. Where you supposed to kiss them . I dont know. Maybe you just shake hands. I dont flowknow. In korea, take off your shoes. Thats asian in general. I think it is respectful. In brazil do not show up on time unless your host tells you to specifically be on time. Some places thats just the time. I wouldnt be able to live there. Because youre prompt. I think it is the rudest thing in the world to make people wait for you like our never mind. We are always the first careful because theyre pointing the cameras at you. Yours is appearing to be not focussed. Good. I like to not be focused. I look better. After 60 baby use the soft focus. Youre always early. Some of my meetings or lunches or parties, were the first two. We like to be the first to leave, too. But in argentina, dont leave before coffee . I dont even drink coffee at night. You know what i have trouble with . At a party when i do leave early. But the hanging around to say goodbye to everybody is endless. I dont think it is worth it. I think you can just slip out. You dont ever go to parties. Youre a driveby person. Yes, i am. Hoda shows up and says hey. Then she disappears. In greece this is weird you have to bring a potted plant. As a gift. Theyre heavy in britain youre supposed to bring enough booze to cover yourself and some extra as a gift to the host. Thats my house, too. No its not. All right, in italy you got to clean your plate. Mamma mia et eat the food. In france you bring a bottle of champagne. In United States dont show up unaflounced. Oh that just happened and it didnt end well. Really . Yes. Its not right. Its rude. Some people especially in the evening. Some people think theyre being spontaneous. Hey, im just in the neighborhood. Let me go by and say hi. No no thats always rude. Rude, rude rude. Do you have any rules in your house . Wed love to know. Do you . No, you dont. You guys are so welcoming. When you have people over but we expect them. I dont like it when people just show up at the house at all. No. You just kind of go what do you want . We dont say it but you want to say, why are you here and what do you want . What noises drive you guys crazy . Okay. Mine isnt even on the list. There is a condition, it is actually a condition. And it is calledsomething that means you hate the sounds. Everyone has one that sticks in your craw. Here are cringe worthy sounds. Cracking knuckles. That wasnt cracking knuckles. Nail clipping. Ooh. You know what . Toe nails. Picture when you hear that on a plane. Youre sitting there quietly and youre like who is that . They throw them over. Flying around. Nose sniffling. Well that kind. I dont like when someone blows their nose at when youre out to dinner. At the table . Anyway theyre just like are they supposed to get up . Yeah. Go into the restroom and bleeow your nose in the restroom. Chewing gum. I was on a plane. I was enjoying some juicy fruit and i was reading a book. The woman next to me said a sexy book. When i have gum in my mouth, im trouble. She goes excuse me could you stop . It is really annoying the chewing of gum. I was so embarrassed. I took it out. Stick it on her seat . No i did not. The number one you know what that is . Slurping. No. Number one whats your number one . Snoring. I cannot believe snoring didnt make the list. You know what . Youre right. Thats just annoying. But enough about bamby beebambino. When people drink out of a straw, the bottom of the drink, bottom of the cup, that is not great. How about gargling. All over my whopper. Whats your favorite least favorite sound . I think it is the nose blowing at the table. Theres something about it. I dont like that. It is not for me. Wed love to know what you all say. It is try day friday. What does that mean . Were going to try something new. Well, you have. Because you still have these. You know when you have that time of the month and all you want is Something Sweet or whatever . There is a company that delivers something called pms bites. They arrive on your doorstep once a month in boxes of six. How do they know when its time . Just asking. Theyre made from dandelion roots for bloating chamomile to reduce stress siberian ginseng to reduce irritability. Plain crazy be cocoa nutty. All kinds of nuts. 60 calories a pop. Is that mmm. That was insincere. You know what time it is hoda . Thats one of the most annoying sounds. Enjoy. Pretend youre its time for our friday funny. Come on, lets do it. Okay. Ready. Hoda . Yes. Why dont they play poker in the jungle . Wry dont they . Too many cheetahs. Mushroom. Mushroom walks into a bar. Bartender says hey, you cant drink here. Mushroom says, why not . Im a funguy. Get it . Why does a tomato blush, hoda . Why did the tomato blush, kath . Because it saw the salad dressing. I told my mom she was drawing her eyebrows too high. She looked surprised. Thats good. Thank you, thank you. Tip your waitress. Youre going to be very busy this weekend. I am. You are flying all over. Where are you going . I am going to boca raton, florida for the weekend. Something called the boca. Im going to appear at the whole foods on glades road in boca raton saturday at noon to 2 30. Love to see you guys. Kathie lee country. Its a he hoda woman, too. Focus on flirting instead of getting in a relationship. The relationships seem like such a big goal. Its like saying i want to be a millionaire. Focus on makinging ing 10 this week. Focus on flirting. Lets go to the next. Hey, im derek from washington, d. C. Im graduating from college soon. Should i look for a relationship now or wait until i finish school . Okay. People get into relationships in college. It gets complicated. If hes asking hes probably not ready for a relationship. Thats a good point. Why dont you live your life . Stop analyzing. If you meet someone you like youre not really going to be asking that question should i be in a relationship now or should i hold off. It sound like hes thinking im going to sow my wild oats while im in college. Do i really want a relationship. But the truth is hell be able to do that later on so he doesnt have to worry. If he has somebody hes met and connected with be with thats really the question should i commit to this person versus wait. If he is somebody he connects with, yeah. But hes young. Hell learn. Who do we have now . Hi. My name is claire bailey. Im from west virginia. My question is playing hard to get. Is that really something that boys like . Lets ask the boy. Did you like when women play hard to get . Never in my life have i seen a woman and thought shes cold shes distant, shes aloof i must have her. That never works for me. You can be fun but play a game of hard to get. No. But see, this is the exact plame problem. People think playing hard to get is not showing interest. I say if i want to show a guy interest, do what women have always done. Drop a handkerchief. Would what a woman used to do hed drop her handhandkerchief. The man would say, what an amazing opportunity to meet a woman. I could use your help with something. Could you hold my jacket while i give these drinks to my friends . Do you think guys like girls who lean back just a hair rather than lean in . I think exactly what matthew said. It is just about creating that space. The problem is women think either you show no interest or you chase the guy, youre like calling him. We got to rock n roll. That was fun. In a few minutes well have five lucky winners.
